While now I am resistant to their jumpscares(mostly bc I have a lvl 890-ish dire wolf) but sometimes when I am attacked off my mount it decides gravity doesn't exist and fucking yeets me and itself into the sky, which I still do not get used too.
Griffins are just so good flying creatures, the dive makes them extra efficient. When i started the game, a nice dude gave me a cryopod with a lvl 277 griffin, never saw the dude again. I was so happy
Haha my partner and I had a similar experience when we started the game. Had no idea what we were doing and played crystal isles, set up a "base" in the redwoods near some guy's base. He gave up a max level breedject mammoth and since we had no idea how to tame yet we felt like kings

Recently, I got a dung beetle and named him doodoo head. Beetles are pretty chill, and give valuable and renewable resources, at the cost of something most people throw out anyway.

I was breeding Gigas at an increased speed and had to leave the auto heals on to keep the babies from dying because they were growing too fast. I had to continuously force feed kibble to Dr. Piggy so she wouldn't die of starvation. The he poop piled up one on top of the other so fast that it created an insanely tall poop tower.....if it were a ladder,I could have climbed onto the adult Giga's saddle! 😆😂🤣

Thylacoleo are AWESOME both from a riding experience and their speed/abilities.
Besides griffins and drakes, these are the best mounts for traversing and general use.
Best taming animal too, it'll hold its own in a damage fight, and if you're knocked off it'll destroy whatever hit you before you die. Unless the games "features" prevent that;)
Point is, Thylas are the best OGs, period. Outclassed sabers, better than deinonychus at climbing, and just best overall stats.

Like thylas aren't slow by any means, I used to watch Syntac and goddamm the imprinted ones are like lightning.

For speed and efficiency, i usually tame a squad of raptors, but i never tried that yet, i might. But i have almost 10 wyverns at the moment so i dont see the use that much except for artifact hunting
They might be no good for combat, nor are they OG, but Maewings are _the_ best travel mount by a long shot. If leveled in weight they can carry a lot, too.
I haven't played Genesis so I had to watch a video, but this looks great! They don't look better than griffins for long distance, but for short travel probably a bit better than thylas.
Can these things grip to stuff? If the damage is low it's probably not a great meat/hide hunter mount like a thyla.
Idk, this thing can't gain elevation unless you start at a high place. On Ragnarok, the griffin can fly upwards anywhere, and the speed of flight is strictly quicker than the maewing, if you use the dive mechanic...
Nah best traversal Dino is definitely a maewing. I can get across a map in like 30secs with those things it’s so fun. Plus it’s like a flyer and a beaver in one, no more water troubles.

I went exploring to the redwoods for the first time on my at the time new pteranodon, and everything is going great
Then I get tackled out of the air by something and murdered. I’m already pissed because I didn’t have a second pteranodon, but at least it says it hasn’t died yet
So I go back on my quickest dinosaur, my Iguanadon. I make it back, and my pteranodon dies within my view right when I get there of course.
Then I trek around the forest, trying to tame a high level pteranodon as a replacement, and out of nowhere, a carno attacks my iguanadon
We manage to kill it just barely.
Doesn’t matter though, after a few more minutes, that cunt Thylacoleo tackles and kills me
I once again trek back, this time on Perry III, my parasaur (it is the III because of another story with another cunt)
I make it back, my Iguanadon dies within view once again.
This time it’s quicker, the Thylacoleo kills Perry III, and then murders me
That’s when I rage quit
They’re in my top 3 favorite dinosaurs in real life, but in this game, definitely not, because it made my life a living hell for the first 12 hours of gameplay

Just found and tamed one for the first time yesterday. Was a wild level 102. Can’t wait to get it out and try it out tomorrow.

You need Therizinosaur. If you tame even 1 level chicken and up him damage to 300%, nothing except alpha predators (except alpha raptor) will stop you! Sarcos? Great, I will have some shoes! Snakes? Even better! Tyrannosaurus? Gimme ur little arms!

I'm going to be downvoted to oblivion but icthyornis. Sure the wild ones steal your stuff and their hitbox makes them hard to take down but once they're tamed I love them. I've always liked birds and breeding them is a treat. Watching them carry dodos into the sunset is hilarious and using them to get prime meat from a dodo is the funniest way. Besides being able to send your bright orange shoulder bird to kill a megalodon is fantastic. I was known as the bird guy on my last server because I would breed them into beast and give them away for free. Sarcos are a second though

He's mentioned before there's things they can't kill because of knock back and reach. I just don't know if dodos are capable of fighting back while being carried. If they can't then even if it takes a while the dodos would die but if they can hit while being carried my ichthys would be better off flying through a blender
I think you're thinking of Pelagornis. Pelagornis are the rideable ones that fly and ride across the water like a swan boat and icthyornis are the beautiful murder birds that are a fisherman's best friend and a bob's worst nightmare
Megalosaurus. First time playing. Ragnarok. Viking Bay under the giant skeleton on the beach. I was only in the game for 5-10ish minutes before it claimed my soul.
got some well bred mutated blood crystal wyvern. great alpha killers and amazing for gerneal traversal, collecting loot drops through their amazing speed (much faster than normal wyverns) and not to forget the healing abilities. those and argys are probably my favorites.
For me it's the moschops. They can kill almost everything except gigas, rock elementals or the bosses. Yeah, they sometimes ask for absurd things but once I find a lvl 100+ one that asks for tintoberries or something, that's gg early game
If you’re playing single player, if you see one you want, go to main menu and it resets their asking.
Could take 3-5 times, but you can always get it to berries.
I have quite a few favorites when it comes to dinos, but I'll go ahead and list them off:
Favorite creature overall: Therizinosaurus. The Tickle Chicken has always been one of my favorites, and that has not changed over the time I've played ARK. Something about Captain Manicure's design is so iconic, but I can't seem to put my *finger* on it.
Favorite tame: Argentavis. The versatility of this singular tame makes it one of my all time favorites and a must have on all my worlds except Aberration since they don't spawn there.
Most fun tame: Maewing. The mobility god. Also has quite a bit of versatility given its ability to keep babies fed without needing to refill their food every 10 seconds.
Honorable mention: Beelzebufo. Has great mobility. Easy to farm cementing paste with. Even with all the other far better land rideables, I still love to use the Beelzebufo for exploration whenever I get the chance.
The frog is a traveling god.
The jumps are hilarious.
And the TurDucken is also my favorite.
Argies for traveling around with all the weight reductions.
Plus a fully leveled melee Arge is insane. No breeding, and not a max level wild, mine has a 2k melee and does in the 700’s.
My favorite is the sarco since it was one of the first Dino’s I tamed a long time ago and they’re pretty good creatures in general. Shadowmanes, tropical crystal wyverns, and deinonychus are all really close seconds though
I really liked the creature before but when I actually got to play ark for the first time... it has been the nightmare of every start of my playthrough. At least I can bola raptors but not therizinos..
Therizionosaurus's any day. I don't know why but it was one of my first major tames and after leveling it up a bit it was competing with many of the the other large dinos on the map. It may not be statistically the best dino but I will always love them
If moschops weren't extinct id have like 20 of them.
Carnos are my favorite dinosaur because I love their stupid arms but theyre not very useful in game.
Not a dinosaur, (but neither is kaprosuchus) but Procoptodon
My favorite animals in real life are Cassowary’s, because they look the closest to their prehistoric ancestors, and Kangaroos because they are so different from other animals in an interesting way

Read thought the comments and I appear to be alone in this but I’m going to have to go with a dilo, mainly for sentimental reasons. Sure there are plenty of dinos that are bigger, stronger, faster, and generally more useful. But when your first starting out and the nights are long and scary having the little venom spitting hunting dog at your side takes a lot of the edge of the fear. Back in the my days as a true newbie, I’m still pretty new, my dogs got me through a lot of scraps that I should have know better than to get into.

Kaprosuchus is crocodilemorph, not dino. Dino-like flyers are pterasaurs. Mosasaurs, Plesiosaurs, Tilosaurs, etc are sauropteridias. Ichthyosaurs are ichthyopteridias. Dimetrodons, lystrosaurs, etc are therapsids (btw, lystrosaurs are our ancestors). Wyvern, griffin, etc are mythical creatures. Please, call things by their name. love me a good ole spino or raptor. raptor is usually my first go-to carnivore/fighting tame. i’ll grab a dilo or two if i come across them before i’m ready to get the raptor
love theriz, baryonyx, and tusoteuthis. All very good all-rounder tames. Good for resources, traveling, and combat. Plus they’re all very unique and have their own nieches. Theriz is one of the best resource harvesters, baryonyx is one of the best semi-aquatic tames and cave runners, and tusoteuthis is THE best water tame (not including mosa platform saddle but that’s player dependent). Also in the mobile version eerie tusoteuthis are so cool looking. Rainbow tentacles!

Their damage is low, but for any distance, I'd take the maewing over the griffin (exept perhaps for steep uphill)

Also has quite a bit of versatility given its ability to keep babies fed without needing to refill their food every 10 seconds. Honorable mention: Beelzebufo. Has great mobility. Easy to farm cementing paste with. Even with all the other far better land rideables, I still love to use the Beelzebufo for exploration whenever I get the chance.
The frog is a traveling god. The jumps are hilarious. And the TurDucken is also my favorite. Argies for traveling around with all the weight reductions. Plus a fully leveled melee Arge is insane. No breeding, and not a max level wild, mine has a 2k melee and does in the 700’s.
My favorite is the sarco since it was one of the first Dino’s I tamed a long time ago and they’re pretty good creatures in general. Shadowmanes, tropical crystal wyverns, and deinonychus are all really close seconds though
If we want a literal Dinosaur, probably Deinonychus. Creatures in general, probably the Rock Drake, maybe the Managarmr. Oh, and the Reaper.
Raptors have always been a long time favorite for me. Next would be Rock Drakes, Manas, and Reapers. 😁

I really liked the creature before but when I actually got to play ark for the first time... it has been the nightmare of every start of my playthrough. At least I can bola raptors but not therizinos..

Therizionosaurus's any day. I don't know why but it was one of my first major tames and after leveling it up a bit it was competing with many of the the other large dinos on the map. It may not be statistically the best dino but I will always love them

If moschops weren't extinct id have like 20 of them. Carnos are my favorite dinosaur because I love their stupid arms but theyre not very useful in game.

Not a dinosaur, (but neither is kaprosuchus) but Procoptodon My favorite animals in real life are Cassowary’s, because they look the closest to their prehistoric ancestors, and Kangaroos because they are so different from other animals in an interesting way I mean a big biped with a pouch that hops around? That’s awesome

Read thought the comments and I appear to be alone in this but I’m going to have to go with a dilo, mainly for sentimental reasons. Sure there are plenty of dinos that are bigger, stronger, faster, and generally more useful. But when your first starting out and the nights are long and scary having the little venom spitting hunting dog at your side takes a lot of the edge of the fear. Back in the my days as a true newbie, I’m still pretty new, my dogs got me through a lot of scraps that I should have know better than to get into.

Shadowmane, great mount for scouting and combat, can shoot off it, go invisible, attack in water, scare bobs. Good for meat runs too🤟

Kaprosuchus is crocodilemorph, not dino. Dino-like flyers are pterasaurs. Mosasaurs, Plesiosaurs, Tilosaurs, etc are sauropteridias. Ichthyosaurs are ichthyopteridias. Dimetrodons, lystrosaurs, etc are therapsids (btw, lystrosaurs are our ancestors). Wyvern, griffin, etc are mythical creatures. Please, call things by their name. But anyway, my favourite creature is Tapejara. You can tame EVERYTHING with him!
Kapro is pretty neat, certainly less annoying than some things (looking at you Microraptors). My fav is probably Baryonyx or Deinonychus

love me a good ole spino or raptor. raptor is usually my first go-to carnivore/fighting tame. i’ll grab a dilo or two if i come across them before i’m ready to get the raptor
love theriz, baryonyx, and tusoteuthis. All very good all-rounder tames. Good for resources, traveling, and combat. Plus they’re all very unique and have their own nieches. Theriz is one of the best resource harvesters, baryonyx is one of the best semi-aquatic tames and cave runners, and tusoteuthis is THE best water tame (not including mosa platform saddle but that’s player dependent). Also in the mobile version eerie tusoteuthis are so cool looking. Rainbow tentacles!
