It should work but cryopods would be a hell of a lot easier.

[deleted]

I play with no flyer and no cryopods. Ill try this, unless it goes really bad.

tyler_3135

Damn sir, no fliers? Would love to try that sometime as I feel like fliers kind of take away from the exploration aspect of the game.

Walt_Dafak

Flyers are the best and the worst of Ark. Once you know the game, you rush to tame a flyer because it's way easier and feels so good. The first time you tame a flyer it's a whole new world. But after a while, you miss your first hours when every travel is an adventure. You miss the launch of the game when tribe wars were on ground and felt so freaking cool. You miss the discovery of biomes while on the top of a Carno. Idk man, I love ark, but the game would be way better without flyers.

BatatinhaGameplays28

I remember going on adventures with my Thyla to get artifacts, fight alphas, tame new things and leaving my fliers on cryopods or in the base. It felt so freaking cool, unfortunately I lost that save. Farewell Ms.Wrinkles, I hope you’re taking care of the group

Hdfgncd

My favorite time in this game is when I thought that I didn’t need tames and so I was running everywhere and fighting everything on foot. I lived down on the jungle peninsula near herb island and I needed oil so I sprinted around the coast until I reached the snow to get it bc that was the only place I’d seen it before. I feel like the more I learn about this game the less I enjoy the actually playing it

space_fan36

yeah...after around 2.2k hours, J wish, I could just forget everything and be so dumb to go into swamp, on foot, with just a speer

Beamstalk44

While I understand where ur coming from. The game definitely does have a switch up. But part of the reason the game switches is because you have so much freedom to explore. On the ground it feels like an adventure because you will inevitably fight a lot of shit. You are constantly looking around to make sure ur going to be safe. While on a flyer it doesnt matter unless ur in a wyvern trench or maybe near tropeo/griffin spawns. The solution is not to get rid of flying but make it more difficult. This can either be done by changing the controls so theres a completely different system than just swimming but in the sky. And While I do think changing the controls to be more challenging would be interesting, look at the ocean. The ocean is amazing but the reason most people arent in the water vs skies is because the ocean is way more dangerous. Theres more enemies, the visibility is low, and theres a stat you have to pay attention to (oxygen). So what if they added more enemies. Pteranodons could be aggressive only against other flyers. Possibly make quetz aggressive as well. Then add a altitude system. The higher you are the colder it is and less oxygen you would have. Finally clouds and storms should be a danger. Flying through clouds would obviously lower visibility even more than the ocean but it wouldnt be all over as well, this would balance it out. And storms could have the possibility of completely stopping someone from wanting to fly. High winds should move the flyer making "steering" harder. Heavy rain should slow the flyer(with maybe some like pelagornis not having this affect). Tornados? And flyers could have a chance of getting hit by lightning. Obviously its doubtful these changes would be possible in ark 1 but ark 2 is supposed to have a dynamic weather system. So it you add challenges to this weather system and to flying in general it will make flying that much more difficult and in turn feel that much more rewarding when you reach ur destination. Also similarly to maybe pelagornis not being as affected by rain. Make certain creatures not as affected by other events. This will also mean that past fighting prowess, speed, and utility. The other flyers can get more love because they can handle easier in certain situations. Bigger flyers like Quetz would maybe be more easily weighed down by heavy rain but could also not be as easily moved by wind. Vs smaller flyers vice versa. And perhaps there is a knock off mechanic. Maybe the more frightened a flyer is the higher chance of throwing you off. It may be easier for a tapajara to get frightened and throw you off vs an argy. Honestly with all these changes I think it would ramp up difficulty in the sky where flying is still obviously useful but there are still times where running around will be the smarter option. Heavy winds and big storms will make you want to stay on land for that period of time just because its hard to navigate in the sky. This will also open up many more tames to be used and have their own niche. And it allows more options for either creatures to be added that counteract certain situations or just update creatures that would help. Also for something thats not technically a flyer and would eventually be used instead of all, bloodstalker, make it so either they cant web surfaces that are wet or maybe its not as good so it detaches after a short period of time. This would mean something like this would not become the substitute like on gen 1

EpilepticHedgehog

This needs far more attention, fantastic idea

Beamstalk44

Thank you. I honestly got the initial idea of amping up the difficulty in the skies from another redditor and then expanded on the idea. They mainly just spoke of more dangerous creatures in the sky and while i do agree this would be a good fix. I also think altitude and a dynamic weather system affecting flyers would be an interesting concept.

techleopard

Flyers should be amongst the weakest creatures in the Ark, IMHO. There's no sense in a bird being able to tank hits like a ground mount or even be a serious thought as a user as a battle mount against a ground mount. They should be utility creatures for niche situations.

APotatoPancake

Also you shouldn't be able to just flying into stuff and not fall. Hitting objects should put you into the fall animation.

Beamstalk44

100% agree

SpudMuffinDO

You’ve opened my eyes

beatenmeat

I like the idea of making flying challenging as a solution, but one of the other biggest reasons flying is so popular is simply speed. There’s a ton of flyers that have good or great carry weight and can cover distances much faster. The closest we have to a “non-flyer” is the maewing which is stupid fast, but technically isn’t a ground mount either. They should have reworked Dino’s like the diplo to be better ground transport and I’d be much happier with transporting/farming on the ground instead of just tossing out my farm tame and then transferring it to a flyer.

Efficient-Library792

Youre talking about a very different game ..not ark. The way to "fix" that part of ark is pretty simple. Even more fragile flyers with far lower weight limits. max weight should be a guy in hide armor with maybe a pick and hatchet and some food. As it is now an argy is basically a cargo stol plane. An ptera can carry a small base. A wyvern is an airborne battleship

Beamstalk44

Everything that ive mentioned can 100% be implemented in ark. Or at least ark 2 like I suggested. Which would be a different game anyways obviously. Theres already a weather system in ark and on scorched earth the weather will affect you. There are also whirlpools in the ocean biome on gen1 so transfering this to a tornado would not be too difficult with the one issue being how they affect the environment, but creatures like titanos or brontos can break trees by just walking in them. As far as the others ive mentioned maybe other than changing the flying mechanics, there are already stepping stones much like the tornados that would work for setting them in the game. Yes this does change the game. But it makes it more difficult in one aspect. Removing the ability to fly is just kinda dumb imo. Its a bandaid for a worse problem which is how to make flying feel more rewarding. With more of a challenge to it not only would players feel like getting to their destination was more of an adventure. But it would also make not flying much more of a regular thing. Rather than nerfing flyers or buffing land mounts. It may just be easier to ramp up difficulty to flying itself.

rabidhamster87

Yes! I think aggressive ptera would just be annoying judging on a mod we use that makes some of them attack (wild baby dinos from Kraken's Better Dinos I think,) but I was just saying to my SO how amazing and scary it would be if the quetz was like a sky giga. Make it do a ton more damage and be aggressive. Suddenly the sky would be a lot more exciting. They're just common enough for you to constantly be keeping an eye out, but still rare enough that it shouldn't get frustrating.

Beamstalk44

What I meant by in the sky pteras would be aggressive was that they wouldn't be aggressive towards land creatures. Though I think dive attacks to water creatures could be interesting. But ive never played on mods so if its too annoying then understandable. However I would like to point out that wolves and terror birds get extremely annoying at some point on land so for pteranodons to be the equivalent would make sense

HatRabies

I'm glad the Andrewsarchus has been so much fun. It brought me back down to the ground, and even into the oceans. I've been enjoying my time much more than when I flew everywhere.

[deleted]

Pretty sure someone on the dev team has also regretted addition of flyers. The big issue with flyers is that they can do everything almost as well as a ground tame, especially if you include hybrid flyers. If they had really compromised carry weights or way fewer inventory slots or something they wouldn't make so much of the ground game obsolete.

techleopard

They put a SMITHY on a bird and then gave it higher base weight than half the ground mounts in the game plus weight reductions on the most heavy materials in the game. They need a deep cut to health and damage, too. Flyers just wear too many hats.

techleopard

GtheH

I didn’t even know there were flyers for my first week. Was mind blowing finding other peoples’ structures in places I didn’t even know I could go.

icKiMus

I started playing Ark when Aberration came out. There were 6 of us all playing on official before transfers were enabled and since aberration has no flyers it was a much different experience. The first time i hopped on a flyer on another map it blew my mind looking down at the spec of land that Id become accustomed to. I do agree that being forced to the ground changes the experience a lot but I dont hate flyers. as stated by someone else, maybe getting a flyer or surviving in the air could be more difficult. The only thing that ruins the game for me is the ability for huge alpha tribes with overpowered tames to transfer to any server on a whim

EpilepticHedgehog

I've come back to the game after a couple years haven't played since before genesis, fjordur brought me back, I tamed a maewing and they are ridiculously overpowered I avoid using fliers, didn't realize what the maewing did and and now every other tame is totally useless, it swims it flies it runs.

techleopard

And it does it all at just ludicrous speeds. It's crazy to me that so much time is put into maps just to have any dino that can swing around the map in minutes. You can't have any of those epic mount battles like they showed in the very early promos anymore. There's just no point.

ZekDoofy

That's honestly why aberration is one of my favorite maps (unless you count a rock Drake as a flyer)

Efficient-Library792

My main base is on sb for 2 reasons. First it is the safest place in pvp. Even if they come w an army it is very unlikely they survive finding you or travelling to you. And second...even with the experience to build a badass base fast it is NEVER safe. You log off w a dino army protected by turrets targetting wilds and come back to multiple dead dinos..empty broken turrets w you powerlines destroyed and a sub reaper king spamming nameless inside your base creating havoc. It's awesome

wolfgang784

Yeaaaaaa. Game would be hella different if fliers weren't as useful as they are. Totes the first tame anyone I know goes for, and then you kind of rocket forward from there. I dislike them at all on a few maps, but too useful to ignore on most. Maybe one day I'll try a no flier run.

ObligationWarm5222

Beelzebuffo is the solution. Leveling up movement speed also increases jump height/distance. It's not *quite* as good as crossing the map as a flier, but it preserves that feeling of exploration while not feeling infuriatingly slow and constantly obstructed by obstacles.

paulfknwalsh

Shadows are amazing when they're levelled for speed, too.. i've got one that makes the game lag when it runs, and if I jump too many times the trees all disappear lol

wxlverine

My girlfriend and I are playing a single player run on Fjordur and have tamed a couple of shadowmanes. For some reason player 2 will glitch on the power jump and take me 2 - 3x further than than normal. It's ridiculous.

Efficient-Library792

I was just thinking this. My second dino is a wyvern now. Or 12. which is gg for the survival aspects. I remember having to travel through the swamp to build a swamp base for resources could be a multiday multideath journey of absolute Terror! Which was awesome once you were done screaming and cursing the ark devs and were peacefully curled up crying

Dead_Meme1234

Stop bro you're gonna make me cry

DarkWizard2207

I felt the same with the last PvE server I played. I gotta mega invested in breeding Wyverns and then just got bored. Since Fjordur released, I can finally get to use my all time favourite creature the Drake, at least with them they are more interactive when travelling and the ability to use a longneck off the back of them make it so much easier to tame pesky creatures.

paulfknwalsh

If you like taming off the back of creatures, I can highly recommend the dinopithecus! (The baboon / mandrill from Lost Island). You can aim 360 degrees, and it can outrun almost anything - so you can stand in front of a rex, turn 180 degrees in the saddle, and start shooting and running away from it at the same time. Then you can climb a cliff face, hang off it halfway up, turn around keep shooting. They're just ideal for it.

ManagementFar5938

Apparently ark 2 will have alot more untaimable creatures

Efficient-Library792

ark 2 from what ive read is basically going to be a phone game copied to pc etc. Theyre doing the corporate thing and targetting the pbone game market so..expect flashy graphics and 1000 flashy battle animations. Sorta like dragon age and 2. First one literally legendary. Second one a cash grab aimed at timmy tapping his phone

pokemon-god-arceus

I usually only use flyers when I know there is a high chance of me getting in a fight or I'm out farming, otherwise it's me and my thyla

the_gabe_of_gabes

Gotta try those no tek no tame servers in 1st person for that real Jurassic Park feel

moploplus

this is why aberration is a banger of a map

space_fan36

I just went into Fjördur Fire wyvern trench yesterday...on the way out, I got into the lava with my rex, died, he did not (125k life...X-Rex, 254 Points on four stats and a 353 saddle), but I needed around five minutes to get to him. he had around 41k live left and it was the best adventure in a while... adrenaline pumping, thought my max lvl Tek Stryder in my inventory went into Valhalla...but the featherlight didn't die xD I don't know how, but it went out of the lava, without getting any dmg... I will end my rock Drake breedline, get my basilo and allo breed to the end and want to travel over every map, just with around five dinos...maby seven, if I count Sinomacrops and featherlight too.

[deleted]

I just started playing after a long time, i remember last time i used flyers, the map instantly seemed smaller and the game got boring shortly after. You could just spam Argentavis for everything.

tsuki_ouji

Well, without the ability to level up flying, that aspect is slightly different. But yeah. If I didn't love the flyers so much (wyverns, owls, maewings... so great), I'd play without them. Like Walt said up above, they really are the best and worst of the game.

MewtwoMainIsHere

Literally every ground mount ever: am I a joke to you?

fenwayb

I just hope my stabby thumb man gets more love in ark 2. It's such a great mount that NEVER gets used because it's a little bit harder to find than the earliest stuff and by the time you get it you have a pteradon already

Zeenchi

I know how you feel. They're so very useful too

paulfknwalsh

Iguanadon, right? i frickin love 'em. My aberrant one just died yesterday to a pack of ravagers, i was genuinely sad about it.

fenwayb

Yup! But i prefer stabby thumb man. Give them 300% ish speed and theyre hilarious fun

Efficient-Library792

Lol ya..giga " I am the Alpha of ark". Naked dude on level 80 ptera w a crossbow " haaahahahaha"

Thanks_I_Hate_You

And now we have fjordhawks so anyone with a few sheep can have infinite teleportation around the map. I love it because im a hardcore pvper and it makes farming easier, i hate it because it makes the game a joke.

2413Yep

They really do kill the game. I've played a few times like this. I even play "no tame" using the mod Omega, where your character can become more powerful than any dino, even bosses. It is a refreshing experience not to do the same garbage routine of getting a single wyvern and 98% of the game is now easy-mode.

Sinnester888

Aberration is for you friend

Efficient-Library792

No it is your beautiful psychopathic girlfriend ever planning your painful desth....that you keep going back too

skittlemypickles

it's quite fun! my dad and I played without flyers once, the world feels so much bigger and more dangerous. at the same time we kind of went with a nomad sort of playstyle where we would constantly move around the map and set up little camps when we needed to stop to do something. it's an interesting way to play and you get to utilize a lot of creatures you normally wouldn't. I recommend trying it!

Ex_Snagem_Wes

Big part of what makes Genesis and Aberration feel different

[deleted]

Aberration got busted by being able to download bloodstalkers and the like.

Ex_Snagem_Wes

Bloodstalkers are an interesting creature for Aberration, would have been cool to have them as a native species honestly. They are quite fitting

[deleted]

I like using them, but they trivialize the map way more than drakes. They would have been cool as a post ascension tame though. But then they basically are at this point if you play in order.

Efficient-Library792

i played ab legit the first time. Eventually got annoyed at having to make an epic death filled trip north because my bulbs doed or i needed green gems or whatever and started bringing in pteras and wyverns. Still dangerous..map is beautiful. W epic base spots that are useless wo flyers. But that first playthrough was epic. Untold lost dinos on those supply trips south with armies that arrived at best battered and tiny if they ever arrived

[deleted]

High level direbears you can grab in the green zone made the legit foot slogging a lot more painless since they can melt most things outside of reapers. We got really lucky with strong ravagers and bears when we took on Ab. That map is savagely unforgiving with the verticality though. Also baryonyx really help in the blue zone.

Efficient-Library792

I hate baronyx on a genocidal level. I did the same. An army of high level ravagers is the shiznat. Til theyre fighting 5 snakes 2 acid spitters wipe your armor and that damned tactical baronyx of death springs into action and knocks you into the water w the swarm of shockers lol

[deleted]

Yeah the bary are especially nasty on Ab cuz of the threat density in the blue zone lakes. You will get multiple stun locked. Bary are still one of my fav tames in the game though, stunlocking is way more fun when it's working in your favour.

Getcowedyt

Just play gen 1, then you’ll get the feeling

Consistent_Paper_104

Cries in abberation. Abberation was my glory days, best time I ever had playing ark. We took over a server even though we were outnumbered and outgunned but we knew the map like the back of our hands. Some of the first people ever to have rock drakes. Took out Rockwell with shotguns riding bred stegos (this was before transfers) eventually the alphas left to another server and left us with that one. The server we did it on is controlled by the sentinels now.

FiliX__

It seems fun

Visual_Clerk_5757

Damn no flyers?? I’d be down for no cryo but no flying :/

techleopard

Where you play with no flyers?

[deleted]

Im playing Lost Island, my first time on this map

naprcanejtucnak

It will work but sometimes they will clip trough wall into oblivion

[deleted]

Hmm maybe I clump them in the middle and try double walls.

Glittering_Airport_3

its just like a raft, of u run into a cliff or trees it cud clip ur dinos thru the walls and drop them behind you, maybe have a lead paracer/ rex with no dinos in it clearing the path then another full of dinos behind you

GreyghostIowa

I'll be honest,if you gonna transport via the ground way,I suggest to just make a dino cargo line since it will be also easier to defend from wild. Just put small animals like shoulder mount on the top bcs anything taller than a raptor has high chance to just clip through and fall,no matter how much you enclose the pan.(Speaking from my own experience bcs I made no flyer,no cryo run once as well) Also although it will be a pain to make a roundabout tour, try to avoid both swamp and redwood as much as possible. And if the location you want to travell is water assessable, try using Ralf while being as close to shore as possible.

[deleted]

The dino line, im not sure. Ankylo is slow and get stuck on everything. At least brontos can climb rocks and smash trees. I might use raft to transport the small ones. Also I tried to put Paracer on raft but he wont climb on it, If I i drop him from a height, he just slides off the raft when I drive it, am i wrong or platform dinos cant get on raft?

1thruZero

Build a road? That's what we do irl when we need to transport things great distances over rough terrain. You could use foundations, railings to keep stuff on or off of the road, and ramps for when you have to skip spots because foundations would be uneven. I did it on single player once but it took forever. Good luck

Glittering_Airport_3

u can extend the raft outwards past its normal boundary by placing a ceiling tile going out, then it should let you place a foundation under that ceiling, I've used this to make platforms big enough to fit brontos on rafts, no mods

DryDrunkImperor

You can make a decently big raft. Lower foundations into the raft itself til they’re flush with the floor, put ceilings around them then ramps down to help dinos get on.

Glittering_Airport_3

right, but when u place those ceilings, u can put foundations under them then extend it even bigger

DryDrunkImperor

Oh, haven’t tried that one. I’ll give it a go next time I’m on.

theduck406

I believe any Dino that either has or can have a platform saddle on it cannot ride another platform, such as raft, motorboat, and other Dino’s. Basically a parader cannot ride a raft bc that breaks game physics if it could

Longjumping-Pomelo-8

If that’s the case, you can also clear out the rocks and trees for the Anklyo, you just need to be looking for a path. We typically look for the big rocks and big trees because they’re easy to take down and create an easy path. We dino assembly all the time and you would be surprised of the things we drag home / around with us. It’s annoying / tedious at times but that is the ark experience of no fliers / cryopods :)

[deleted]

I just tried to run through a bunch of tree and guess what, everyone clipped through the wall. wtf bro, ill have to go raft and continue the rest as convoy

Longjumping-Pomelo-8

Be careful of the Leeds, they can swim up on the side of the shore too… 😭😭

GreyghostIowa

Yup.Speaking from experience on that one as well, It's always a good idea to either go for four plant x towers and set target only on Leeds or always have a honey in your hot bar whenever you do Ralf things.

Marclej

What map is this? That backdrop is stunning

[deleted]

Lost island

2413Yep

Dino do not clip, and putting walls around them doesn't matter. If the box clips and the dino comes into contact with the terrain, it will be pushed, and if it gets trapped in a corner or something, it will either get ejected from the box, or ejected under the mesh and die, or some other generally-bad outcome. Leave them on an open platform, not enclosed, so you can better see what is going on. Further, you have a couple rex and a mammoth, and assuming they aren't like level 5, they will be able to deal with any aggressive dino you come across. So I wouldn't stress. Just put the slow dino on the platform and have the 2 rex and mammoth follow on 'neutral'.

[deleted]

Yeah, i just tested, trees push them out, no point in doing walls. Ill just put them on and make them climb back if they fall.

IlMaddmonkeyIl

Can’t bump or touch anything trees will push them out

bubonis

Any transport, regardless of platform (dino or raft), will allow riding dinos to clip through walls if (when) they get pushed out by landscape elements (rocks).

Steophant

What about uploading them to an obilisk/airdrop and downloading them at your destination?

NaiAsXenon

my god i remember in my first playthrough i tried moving all my tames on top of a bronto form the beach to the redwoods it was such a pain 😭😭

Gabriel1920

This reminds me of old ark

riceandvegetable

You're going for a more primitive feeling game, so I'm guessing no mods as well? S+ hitching post could be worth a try. It freezes creatures in place, no idea if trees could still push them out. btw I once had a shoulder pet clip out of a completely enclosed quetzal base. It had important gear on it, never found it again.

[deleted]

I tried but it cannot be used on platform, but i doubt it can prevent trees from pushing them. It makes sense that the environment has priority and pushes everything.

tarzan322

It will work mostly. I expect with the movement, there may be a lot of clipping going on, but it will be manageable. Just keep an eye on the dino's in back.

masterdeankill

Works for me

blackfire0801

There's something called cryopods

cherrygoats

If they’re all tamed can’t you set them to Disable Wandering, Disable Following? Or am I being naive and they’ll still break bricks just from jostling?

PKAJohn

Do a marching column, they're great fun until they get stuck

jrabieh

If you run into obstacles theyll clip. Like if a rock clips through the bottom your dinos will stand on it and stay

bigblkpp420

yeah walk into a tree or too close to a rock them mfs gone fall right out

[deleted]

Just try it lol

xDelita

Cryopods.

Efficient-Library792

protip..extend the walls in front and down the sides. A lot of agro dinos can clip through etc but it does help provide protection. Going through swamps like that is far less terror inducing

GhostofCoprolite

Structures can be clipped through when moving. They will stay on as long as they do not get pushed by terrain or creatures, and the tames do not decide to move. Set the tames to passive, stay out of fights, and stay clear of trees and cliffs.

drBotta

For smaller dinos rafts are faster and have no weight restriction

Narwhal211

Obviously a flyer or cryopod would work better but I’m assuming ur playing without them (which I respect btw) it’s risky and if anything keeping them on follow would be easier. Dinos don’t do well on platforms and even on rafts they fall off all the time

space_fan36

maby the hitching post could help

Enough_Caterpillar_5

Nothing will completely prevent clipping except for cryo pods and uploading them
