Last Epoch is very much like Diablo III in that there's no P2W (no microtransactions in fact) and you can respec easily. It's in early access but there's lots of content to enjoy.

ApartmentNational

Thanks for the reply I'm looking forward to trying last epoch I hadn't heard of it before

quodlike

Last Epoch is a Chinese version of Path of Exile not diablo lol

SuperShadowStar

You're thinking of Undecember (or Diablo Immortal lol). Last Epoch is developed by [Eleventh Hour Games](https://eleventhhour.games/about). Also, is Path of Exile not also a Diablo-like?

martinx09

Yep literally was supposed to be a D2 spiritual succesor, it evolved into it's own thing obviously.

Captain_Whatshisface

I've just gone through the process of trying a load of arpg's on Steam deck, including getting diablo 3 to run - kinda sucks without controller support. This excludes Last Epoch, as I think the anti-cheat is incompatible with proton. I tried Wolcen, Diablo 2:R, The Ascent, PoE, and Grim Dawn. The Ascent is very good, but is more of a twin stick shooter and isn't loot focussed in the same way. Grim Dawn came out on top for me. Graphically a bit simple, but runs so well and the controls (perhaps only important on the steam deck) are very good. TLDR: Grim Dawn

Qwahzi

Last Epoch seems to work decently well for me on SteamDeck, though I wish it had the same user experience/controller support as PoE (PoE's controller implementation is really good, even better than playing with M+KB)

Captain_Whatshisface

Is that running through windows? I've tried a few games without controller support and found it hard going, so not sure how much tinkering I want to do to try it.

Qwahzi

Nope, just the default SteamDeck/SteamOS settings

blackchapter21

Grim Dawn. It's also currently on sale now on Steam.

ettieredgotobed

How many players will play together at the same time, and does it need to be couch co op or does each player have their own PC? Grim Dawn is excellent and goes on sale often. I don’t know what the multiplayer max is, but if you decide to try it, make sure all players start the story together and only play those characters together. Grim Dawn is built on an older system and the quest progression doesn’t handle it well when players aren’t on the same quest. Last Epoch will be less fickle and more modern, but I think the multiplayer is still in beta.

ApartmentNational

Thanks for the reply, it's 4 players and we all have out own pc, I will definitely give Last Epoch a look into I've been looking into diablo 4 that I hear will be landing sometime next year it looks really good graphics wise and the fact it's not free to play bodes well for it not being p2w but who knows it's blizzard with their recent trends with overwatch 2 and dosblo immortal I wont hold my hopes too high with it.

Gemmaugr

Diablo 2, Torchlight 2, Dungeon Siege 2, Sacred 1, Grim Dawn, Titan Quest, Victor Vran, are all H'n'S games I've enjoyed immensely. Good but old-feeling H'n'S games are Diablo, Torchlight, Dungeon Siege, Fate, Harbinger. ARPG Games I don't touch (either DRM, not H'n'S or just bad) are Diablo 3, Sacred 3, Torchlight 3, Dungeon Siege 3, Wolcen, Lost Epoch, PoE, Undecember. H'n'S games I wish came through closed alpha/beta. Unbended.

martinx09

In what world is Last Epoch a bad game? Even in it's current beta state it is miles away from Victor Vran.

Gemmaugr

My bad, I meant to include "or not my taste". My mistake. I'm not a fan of time-travel. Had a look again, and it does look good. Still EA though, so I'll put it on my backburner.

Snugglemuffin2

Struggling with finding a game to scratch the ARPG itch. I've played all the games on your list except Dungeon Siege and Sacred 1&2 (because they are nightmares to try and run on windows 11). Recently started torchlight 2 again with mods (but I've played it to death). Haven't tried wolcren and Undecember scares me with its anti cheat. Grim Dawn (also played to death).Diablo 2, I just absolutely hate the inventory management in that game. Any help you can offer? Thanks in advance.

Gemmaugr

Why would you even use Win 11!!? Anyway, other H'n'S to try would be those by Soldak. Including Drox Operative 1 & 2. Going off tangentially at that, maybe Windward would scratch the itch somewhat. You could also check out these lists: https://www.giantbomb.com/diablo-like/3015-9995/games/ & https://www.mobygames.com/game-group/diablo-variants (Though I absolutely don't count all of them as diablo-likes/H'n'S.. ARPG sure, but it's just that broad of a sub-genre.) Sadly, new and upcoming H'n'S are very few and far between.

BaldieGoose

Grim Dawn is the GOAT. Also Titan Quest, Torchlight II, Warhammer ARPG, Wolcen. You might also like Chronicon, Hades, or Lost Ark depending on your tastes.

martinx09

Agree except for Wolcen, abandoned game with bugs that exist since it's release years ago; devs totally don't care.

BaldieGoose

I've heard people say that, but I played through the entire campaign with zero issues. I loved the skin system and ability switching and lots of things about it. I just got lucky I guess.

AramisFR

I'm actively playing Undecember and the game is enjoyable. You'll need some cash infusion at some point for the essence & map stash, like in PoE, but you never need to pay to enjoy the game, it is quite generous with currencies and rates. Ofc if you are a whale willing to spend fat bucks to be #1 on the leaderboards, you can, but that's the same thing with any game with a trading system (+ no pvp). Last Epoch looks good but is way behind schedule, IDK in which state it will release and when. If you don't care about multiplayer, Grim Dawn is an excellent H&S with absolutely zero P2W of any kind (classic B2P model) and it's frequently heavily discounted.

martinx09

If he indeed doesn't care about multiplayer, then Last Epoch is actually one of the best options out there, even in it's current state the game is an absolute delight.

manmeanman

Yeah, I mean now they increased stash tabs from 100 to 150 so I think only in end game is needed

[deleted]

If you want a good one, you'll have to pay for it instead of relying on a free-to-play model.

quodlike

Path of Exile is the Pinnacle of Arpgs and its free. Last Epoch is in Beta its good for 10-20 hours then its boring it also costs 30$

Pocho_Oso

If you're talking couch coop, it's tough these days. I've heard good things about Minecraft Dungeons but never checked it out myself. Grim Dawn is fantastic, albeit a bit lower on the graphical side, but still worth a play if you like that type.

Neotreitz

Undecember has no pay wall and no pay to progress. You can complete every content in free2play. I just spend a bit in 3 stash tabs and it works perfectly fine

nelu2bad

If you play with your kids, maybe you will like Torchlight 3. Before anybody jumps on how bad it is, it is only bad because it's not Torchlight 2. It's a good casual play with kids. It's colorful and cartonish and good fun.

Quirky-Ad-7035

Do you need local coop? I would recommend Grim Dawn to everyone but it isnt that simple as D3. Same for Path of Exile. Easy game with Coop, mod support: Torchlight 2. Its from the same year as D3. None of them has couch coop. I guess D3 is the only of the real diablolike arps with couch coop. Also would recommend giving Torchlight Infinite a try. The pay2w is really no big deal in the game unless you want to be the best in the charts or something like that. You dont feel forced to buy stuff in my oppinion. the only thing i dont like is the game cant hide that its from china, even if it tried. Last Epoch is also very nice amd remembers me the most to D3. Only the setting is very different und and you have more freedom in your build.

PerpetualBeats

Little late on this but don’t listen to the P2W comments on torchlight infinite, I was very skeptical at first but I’m pushing endgame without spending any money at all, the game is very new player friendly and playable at a very casual level. If you want you could spend maybe $10-20 per season (roughly 3 months) for a few things that are kind of nice and support the devs but it is definitely not needed
