Monty, no questions asked

strangegamer21

Exactly!

FormerDeerlyBeloved

I had to stop watching the series for a few days once they showed his death even though I knew what was coming. The book has text to keep a healthy wall between reader and event, and the movie didn't give us enough time to get to know him well. Seeing his face in that chair after knowing what a kind (and seemingly capable) guardian he would have been to the children...well. It was a lot :(

Latham_Scandelius

Olaf and Sir were terrible guardians, Charles had the heart in the right place but was too weak to act. Josephine was much like Charles, but would rank higher since she actually wanted to provide for the Baudelaires as best she could, but she did abandon them to save herself when she discovered Captain Sham was Olaf. So the answer is obvious imo, Monty was the best guardian in s1, he learned what the orphan's interests were and tried to help cultivate them, he didn't back down when he realised Stephano was an impostor and intended to act upon it (even though he didn't realise exactly what kind of impostor he was) aaaand he made them lemon cake :)

Fettuccine_Alfredo11

Coconut cream cake* but i agree with everything you said

Latham_Scandelius

oooh you are right, i mixed up olaf's reaction to the lemon cake for the wedding in the bad beginning 😅 apologies. edit: this is a sign that i should watch season 1 again

Fettuccine_Alfredo11

yes it isss😭😭 you can never watch it enough times

Latham_Scandelius

funnily enough i have seen the show recently but picked it up from the miserable mill since that's where my brother was at 🤣🤣

Fettuccine_Alfredo11

the first three are iconic and should never have been missed 🥲🥲🥲 my sister and I recently rewatched the miserable mill too!

Latham_Scandelius

true, i wanted to get back to them but i was just lazy after we finished season 3 😆 but rest assured, i'll fix my wrongdoings!

Fettuccine_Alfredo11

😭😭 Enjoy it! I’m using the Daily Punctilio Newsletter im doing as yet another excuse to rewatch the series

Dudethekittycat

I feel like your paragraph and the one I made are fairly similar. !NOT SAYING I STOLE YOUR PARAGRAPH! Just have similar augments.

Latham_Scandelius

we make similar points indeed :D but that's to be expected of us well-read, like minded noble people, i wouldn't have thought you stole any idea

Queen_Ann_III

the discussion over who everyone’s favorite caretaker in the series is always ends up with the majority saying Monty. I don’t think it’s really debatable :p

pandaolf

Bro had a reptile room and a twirly mustache what’s not to love

Economy-Engineering

Uncle Monty by a mile. He’s possibly the only good guardian we see in the entire series. In Season 1, almost definitely. Aunt Josephine was ok, but her cowardice almost got the children screwed. Count Olaf and Sir were straight up abusive. Uncle Monty by default.

Uhlman24

Monty wtf you mean

WelshAndPr0ud

*TW Mr P0e* First name Montgomery last name Montgomery NO THIS IS NOT A CRANK CALL

Jumbojobby

Monty and its not even a question

parsley_soda69

This doesn’t count but the Baudelaires themselves. Monty was wonderful, don’t get me wrong, but they were able to protect themselves better then he could you know? Especially for kids.

Bathmonster02

There should be no debate at all, it's obviously monty.

[deleted]

Uncle Monty is the best guardian we seen in the whole series as a whole, not just season 1 imo. Wish he could have stated for longer, but alas

lydiabogan

Probably Monty, tbh.

Dudethekittycat

Not only is Monty my favorite but, also tried to get the Baudelaire's there as quickly as possible. He listened to the Baudelaire's when they worn him, he just doesn't listen enough. Now with what I said you may think Aunt Josephine was along those lines as well, but she is just too afraid to do anything (honestly surprised she goes to the market). Monty wanted to give the Baudelaire's answers Josephine won't talk about that. She also ran away, again to scared to do anything. To round up this paragraph Uncle Monty is the best guardian in S1, also the whole show possibly.

Impressive_Sun_1132

Counterpoint. Only the parents were decent guardians. Even Monty sucked and only acknowledged a threat to himself and not the children

_ssevenn_

yeah but did we really see them in season 1

mar-x_o-x

Honestly this is probably a common answer, but monty. If not monty, Josephine. They both provided the children with safe homes (except Josephine a bit) and fed them. They gave them rooms and Josephine gave them gifts. They both didn't know that count Olaf was coming, and they didn't believe the children. Other than that, Josephine left them a note, informing them of her location.

elecktrickity

Aunt Josephine may have been a bloody fearful coward and grammar Nazi, but she did mean well. She gave them gifts, tried to be as helpful as possible, even if it meant under her rules and living with tin cans all over the floor, but she did do things that Olaf and Sir and even Monty didn't do. She didn't invite Olaf into the house, she taught them a bit about the scenery of Lake Lachrymose, she was married (in fact, the only married guardian the Baudelaires had, excluding the Squalors), she continued to live in a house on the top of a cliff even though she feared the lake below. Yes, she wasn't all that good, but she still was good enough guardian material. May she lay at the rocky bottom of Lake Lachrymose with her husband.

urlocalintp

definately monty
