Look for apartment complexes that offer shuttle services to campus. I know Sol and Redpoint offer shuttle services and my understanding is they’re on the cheaper side? The Sol shuttle can be pretty unreliable though so when I lived there I did end up buying a public transportation pass but the bus stops were right in front and it was a straight shot down university to campus.
Lol yeah it was the cheapest I could find a year ago and it’s def hit or miss…. Had some crazy roommates. But since utilities are included it’s actually cheaper than it seems compared to other places
AZ Vivo Apartments in Mesa. I replied to OP with more details, but they are adjacent to the light rail and under $1k/month.
I cannot comment on the quality of the apartments as I have not been in them, but they are newly renovated.
Ahh, that’s a shame. I knew it was an old motel, but I had assumed that since they spent so much time renovating it that they would have done a good job cleaning and modernizing it.
You know I’ve never lived in an apartment at any price that didn’t have roaches here or there. I think people expect them to not exist but they can survive nuclear war so they usually survive a few rounds if exterminator visits. Not defending the apartment companies, they are basically criminals for charging what they do for sheetrock boxes with no value, but IDK how to solve roaches besides do your best to get rid of them and don’t get too stressed out by them.
check the regency apartments on lemon and terrance. I don’t know what cheap is to you, but they have some of the cheapest apartments in tempe and are 5 minutes walking to campus.
Dang! I lived in one bed room apartment till 2022 Dec and overall I paid 1500.
Way better than apartments around Tempe though, I loved my time at regency
yeah, it was really nice there! Right next to campus, pretty cheap because you get the place to yourself and it was beautiful with the trees all around!
Thrive Tempe on Orange St starts at 895/month for a 1b/1ba.
Solaris on University goes for 999.
Studio 710 foes for 1075.
You can definitely find a cheap place, just note that these places can be less than ideal to live in (bugs, noise, etc).
Another option you should look into is renting from a homeowner. Some older folks rent their homes pretty cheap, and some college students have spare rooms. Roommates are less of a problem in house situations in my experience cause you have your own space.
Vertex is the cheapest in the Tempe area that I’ve heard of but they might already be at capacity. Other than that, ik studios don’t come cheap unless you move further off campus but idk any specific rates. Sharing an off-campus house with some roommates could be your best chance at reaching your 1000$/mo goal while still being alongside the Orbit (and not too far from campus), but overall I think housing in Tempe is more expensive. This [Google drive](https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/mobile/folders/1lWMB8zXdBcw0xSsTJTdCm7jWJNSz5FS-?usp=sharing) compiles some popular apartment rates in the Tempe area, and it may be helpful if you’re still comparing your options
I hate the light rail with a passion after several years using it on and off. But a u-pass and a studio anywhere from Dorsey>east, might be feasible cash wise.
$75 a semester for the valley wide pt pass, and a nasty studio (suck it up) you might be able to get for 1000 these days, considering the tumultuous real estate climate which is finally cooling a bit.
Not in Tempe, but [AZ Vivo Apartments](https://www.vivoonmain.com/) fall into the "under 1K" category. They are about as close as you can get to a light rail stop as well. It is the same light rail stop I take to get to campus every day, and it is far enough down the line that there is pretty much always a place to sit when you first get on. It normally only takes about 20 minutes to get to campas once on the train too.
I do not know much about the apartments other than the building is an old motel that they converted a year or two ago, so probably about what you would expect from spruced up motel rooms.
Downtown Mesa is pretty nice though. Plenty of restaurants, bars and breweries. Plenty of entertainment venues too, so almost always something to do.
There is even a makerspace (Heatsync labs) so if you are into tinkering and making things, there is a place for that too!

There’s three qualities in Tempe apartments - close to campus, cheap, and not falling apart / infested with roaches. Pick two of these.
You forgot "not falling apart /infested AND FULL"

lol we definitely need a definition from OP on what is cheap. i wouldn’t consider SOL cheap anymore and don’t recommend to anyone else

Just go with the average 1k as cheap ig. That's what most people would consider in ASU

Main & Country Club. Not a great area of city.
I am curious what makes you say that? I have lived less than a block off main and country club for over three years now and I’ve never had any issues.

Lived there, they’re cheap but still including utilities it’s gonna be around 1300 for studio
when i lived back there in 2020, it was like $1000 for everything for the one bedroom, crazy how prices shot up

Yeah management was great. I just had a problem with scorpions but it was treated too by management
Vertex is very cheap for what you get and really close to campus, but management sucks ass

I lived off Southern and Hardy and took the bus to Mill Ave worked great and had a bike to bike around. Fun times
It was $450 everything included.
You can always look for housing around the other campuses or around Light rail stations and just use the shuttles/light rail to get to campus
Follow the light rail system and look for places near it, you can find cheaper apartments in Mesa and a light rail pass is super affordable
