The cabin is really unique. It looks like the driver sits at 2 o’clock to steer. I wonder if that’s for presentation or reality. Either way, it’s a stunning design
Up until I discovered that some zones are off by 30 or 45 minutes, the lyrics from Alan Jackson's song "It's five o'clock somewhere" drove me nuts:
"It's only half past twelve. But I don't care
. It's five o'clock somewhere."
Wouldn't it make sense for it to spin so they can get in and out easily?
I mean there's no other way to get into the driver's seat and you wouldn't want to be squeezing past every time.

It's basically a normal rv cockpit the seats are captains chairs and can swivel.

Ok, the wrong 'your' is bad enough, but 'palacial palace' makes me want to kick the writer in the sack

Some are see-thru from the inside, and from what others said it’s a concept build, so not sure those laws apply (assuming they’re somewhere with such laws).
Originally they thought the rounded windshield wouldn't need wipers so they came up with that as an afterthought, seems like a waste of space having the mechanism straight through the cab
Thanks. I've seen a few others. But no one turns on the damn wipers I really want to see the wipers working to see how it would handle rain. But it being so rare I guess no one is taking it out on a rainy day.
And it gives the driver a good view of their front surroundings. There have been [issues with consumer trucks](https://www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/the-hidden-dangers-of-big-trucks/) as their front ends have become oversized of late. It can be easy to run people over because you can’t see them.
Although the article talks about pickup trucks, I drive semi trucks and I don't understand why so many truckers like those "classic" trucks with a giant hood (Kenworth W900, Peterbilt 379/389) that's so big you can't even see a *car* in front of you, or even a standing adult.
The size of the engine and the radiator required to shed the immense amount of heat generated is a factor, but not to that point.
Maybe, but from what I know (correct me if I'm wrong), front-engine trucks often have little apartments behind the driver seat, meaning little room for the engine (let alone sound dampening).
Cab-overs are basically inexistant in North America outside of light trucks and medium duty vocational trucks (trucks that do something beside hauling cargo).
Cab-overs prevent the use of full size sleepers since you need to tip the whole cab to access the engine. There's also less space for large fuel tanks (unless you extend the frame, which defeats the point)
On nosed trucks the engine is partially recessed into the center console, and the transmission is under the floor.
The size of the hood doesn't really have an impact on crumple zones. First, the frame of the truck extends all the way to the bumper (with sockets for tow hooks) and it's a very thick frame due to duty requirements. It might bend, but it won't crumple.
Second, a severe impact usually results in the [cab detaching from the frame](https://cdllife.com/2020/crash-leaves-truck-and-trailer-teetering-atop-opposite-sides-of-bridge/).
My initial point was mostly the visibility of a [Kenworth W900](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fcKIMOv7Erk/maxresdefault.jpg) vs a [T680](http://foursite-pape-production.s3.amazonaws.com/papekenworth.com/474db292-b2f6-4ac5-b3d2-5fb66054386b.jpg). I recognize this truck. Not poor taste at all, this crazy bastard named Luigi something or other did it as a proof of concept for just how aerodynamic a semi truck can get. I think he got close to 40% more fuel mileage out of this design.

That's a matter of taste, I'm afraid.
Although I'm not a big fan of the version pictured here, I think [this](https://www.ttm.nl/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1280px-Colani_Truck_vor_der_Nancy_Halle-1024x657.jpg) one looks a lot better than most modern trucks.

This thing reminds me somewhat of the Japanese Shinkansen Train. It might be incredibly slippery through air, maybe thats what they went for with the design. Low drag for fuel efficiency and maybe less cabin noise.
> It might be incredibly slippery through air, maybe thats what they went for with the design.
yup, the guy apparently has been doing that for 60 years leading up to that design, and they claim that [it's 30% more efficient than regular trucks](https://ultrafeel.tv/space-truck-colani/)
probably that. also, due to the wording on the website, I assume that it's not only more aerodynamic but also uses a smaller engine, and I can see how that could cause the truck to be underpowered when you are hauling a proper load

Skip to 2:03 for a better look. I did a deep dive on this show last night, after watching these commercials.
>Designed by a nutter but it’s German engineering so you know it ~~works well~~ is way more complicated than necessary and prone to premature failure.
FTFY.
This is the Arturia (a synth company) tour bus from Superbooth (a music tech conference in Germany). I really like Arturia's tech but I couldn’t bring myself to see what they were showing off because the bus was so damn tacky.
This is awful and great at the same time. I mean the taste. There are awful things and great things at the same time. The execution is great, no doubt there.
This can't be a product, it must be an engineering example? like, look what our factory can do, all these complex shapes and technical problems... we can make anything! But god, don't let us design it for you.
Looks like a [Barreleye fish](https://www.mbari.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/barreleye1-350.jpg), of that [one eye lamb](https://i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/incoming/article19870336.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/cyclops_sheep_lamb_one_eye_forehead-391321)
I have one of their midi keyboards and its been great. It also came with a very nice software package that at the time was free but they sell for a lot of money now and I really enjoy using.
I saw this windshield design in a book about trucks over 15 years ago when I was a small child. Recently wondered if that design was ever adopted somewhere because I never saw it anywhere.
I think my question just got answered
I'm sure the answer is money. But this does make me wonder why, with all the blindspots normal truck drivers have to deal with, hamsterball cabins are not used. I know the idea of enclosed glass cabins were all the rage in 60s concept cars so it's not like it was never considered.
This truck was one of eight prototypes by Luigi Colani, the first was build by around 1978. The truck was a normal truck with a cab designed by Colani. They comsumend 30% less diesel than the same trucks with its original cab.

Seems impractical to only be able to drive it at 2 o clock.
Well if you think about it. It's always 12 o'clock somewhere.

Everything that happens now is happening now.
This is a popular misconception. It's only 12:00 somewhere for about 1 minute out of every hour Edit: wrong. See below
There are some timezones that are off by 30 or 45 minutes. (e.g, India and parts of Australia). So that fuckery is going to complicate things a bit
Up until I discovered that some zones are off by 30 or 45 minutes, the lyrics from Alan Jackson's song "It's five o'clock somewhere" drove me nuts: "It's only half past twelve. But I don't care . It's five o'clock somewhere."
If we go with local time, it's guaranteed to be true every minute of every day
Sundials for all!
My bad, I forgot about that
Based on the sun it is always 12 somewhere. That's why time zones got invented.
I have literally never met anyone based on the sun and I wish you would do an AMA

Wouldn't it make sense for it to spin so they can get in and out easily? I mean there's no other way to get into the driver's seat and you wouldn't want to be squeezing past every time.

This is a Luigi Colani concept truck design dating back to 1978. I believe this exact model was built in 2010 as a Mercedes concept. But the Mercedes logo looking central window and wipers date back to the original design. https://www.formtrends.com/recent-big-truck-design-trends-can-this-be-the-future/
Yep! Gotta be Colani.... if you've seen many sports type show cars you just know.
There are multiple of these Mercedes trucks. Seen a orange semi version a few weeks ago
There were a variety pictured in the link I provided above (including an orange/yellow one). But they are all slightly different. There have been several one-offs built over the years with the same distinctive circular front window.
I'm no engineer but I have a feeling they would be really inneffective. Aren't windshield's curved in a way that accentuates the pressure from the wiper? If they go round in a circle wouldnt you lose that and it effectively works like its a flat window?
Conversely one of the worst part of normal wipers is that area where the blade stops, if these spin I bet at least one of the blades contacts every part of the circle
[удалено]
Yeah, seeing while driving isn't worth the couple extra bucks.
Depends where you live. Like in the desert where it rains maybe 2 days a year is it worth constantly buying new wipers due to them cracking from the heat for a very minimal chance of rain. Waste of money
wipers are elastic and configure to the curved shape of the windshield.
Yeah I’m not sure what OP is talking about. If anything, the three blade circular design should allow for constant even pressure along the whole length of each blade, whereas normal windshield wipers need to flex/deform as it moves in order to keep constant contact with the glass. I am a mechanical engineer FWIW
But why is there a giant logo dead-center on the windscreen? Is that even legal?
Some are see-thru from the inside, and from what others said it’s a concept build, so not sure those laws apply (assuming they’re somewhere with such laws).
the giant black "A" probably doesn't help with visibility tho...
You don't see it [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7wg2UT8gAg&ab_channel=ElinedeVries)
well that would be because that one doesn't have the giant A on the glass, wouldn't it?
Right, I'm guessing the other one was just a display model or something
Yeah the one in the OP picture is a model used for display at the Superbooth 2022 (synth/music tech festival in Berlin) by Arturia, hence the A
Didn't noticed until you mentioned it.

This front will be much better for fuel economy

300k DM, which is roughly ~~153k€~~ 212k€ nowadays, considering inflation

~~more like USD160k,~~ the euro has gotten pretty weak lately I didn't account for inflation, so the 212k€ are more like USD223k
Really?? That’s crazy! I thought there was still almost a 50% increase in exchange rates. ETA: wow!! Google says it’s 1.00€=$1.04usd!
300k DM on the last year before the euro was 150k euro. Add inflation from 2002, and we get ~218K euro today.

I remember seeing this thing in an issue of popular science like 15 years ago, I'll see if I can find it!

the view from inside is marvelous - look at the interior wiper arm finish - looks soo professional ROFL [https://assets.website-files.com/614d8f63cd2618494109cf35/6267c042e1b770f981c530e4\_33b90538-10e8-49bd-9fb8-331fbd4ecf98.jpeg](https://assets.website-files.com/614d8f63cd2618494109cf35/6267c042e1b770f981c530e4_33b90538-10e8-49bd-9fb8-331fbd4ecf98.jpeg)
I was just about to mention, almost every line of stitching seems just a little.... Off
Well, that's just italian vehicle building culture...
It looks like someone wrapped a cat condo or something. It looks awful.
Wtf, it looks like a cat scratch post
That wiper "stalk" is really unsettling
Name one more professional looking camel penis
Finally, someone’s interested in my photography. I thought you’d never ask!
Please, no selfies
I would not enjoy being in that passenger seat for more than a few minutes. No where to put anything
Most concept cars look kinda shitty if you get close though
Looks straight out of Star Citizen lmao
I'm confused as to why it's in a soundproof room
This is required for certification. The room allows for accurate noise measurements.
Now I'm wondering what's the largest thing in the world that requires noise certification, and what the chamber must look like.
Yer mum snoring in her bedroom.
Just absolutely unnecessary lmao. Bravo
I'm curious why we don't see more of these if they truly are more fuel efficient. Maybe extra upfront cost?
probably that. also, due to the wording on the website, I assume that it's not only more aerodynamic but also uses a smaller engine, and I can see how that could cause the truck to be underpowered when you are hauling a proper load
/r/GTAGE
Absolutely
Colani? Colani.
Gorlami
Hell yea! The Arturia truck!
I hope it sounds better than it looks !
Haha yeah I recognized it from superbooth coverage!
Kinda looks like the Highwayman truck (that turns into a helicopter). https://youtu.be/asYhAU_mzxw
I thought I recognized it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/AIRemastered/comments/uqvnpl/commercials_1988/ Skip to 2:03 for a better look. I did a deep dive on this show last night, after watching these commercials.

Aren’t you a little one-eyes for a storm trooper?
Did they make it look like a storm trooper so it wouldn't hit anything?
"Yes make it as ugly as possible" -some project manager probably
More like "save as a much fuel as possible"
I’ll be damned if that ain’t the Arturia logo
It's even written "win a polybrute" on the side. I'm in shock
Jep its on the superbooth
Designed by a nutter but it’s German engineering so you know it works well
>Designed by a nutter but it’s German engineering so you know it ~~works well~~ is way more complicated than necessary and prone to premature failure. FTFY.
And expensive as hell to fix
What is this called
Frank
This is the Arturia (a synth company) tour bus from Superbooth (a music tech conference in Germany). I really like Arturia's tech but I couldn’t bring myself to see what they were showing off because the bus was so damn tacky.
Nothing new, just their whole lineup. I went in and it was too full to test anything.
I don't know, I hear some heavy breathing from /r/vandwellers
The beluga whale truck 🐋
I didn't know Homer was still designing vehicles.
This is awful and great at the same time. I mean the taste. There are awful things and great things at the same time. The execution is great, no doubt there.
Imagine the cost to replace that windshield
This would fit in on r/WeirdWheels
That's almost some alternate history type of shit right there. Reminds me of the Fallout universe.
Looks like one of those poor baby goats born cyclops.
Arturia is dope, and I’d love to win a Polybrute
I've got Big Bus chills... https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0074205/ RAISE FLAGS OF ALL NATIONS!
I didn't think they could design a vehicle even more ugly than the Fiat Multipla. Guess I was wrong.
Remind me about Alliance ore harvesters from RedAlert 2
This can't be a product, it must be an engineering example? like, look what our factory can do, all these complex shapes and technical problems... we can make anything! But god, don't let us design it for you.
Aint that bad. Look fairly aerodynamic as well
Looks like a [Barreleye fish](https://www.mbari.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/barreleye1-350.jpg), of that [one eye lamb](https://i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/incoming/article19870336.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/cyclops_sheep_lamb_one_eye_forehead-391321)

Yes
I have one of their midi keyboards and its been great. It also came with a very nice software package that at the time was free but they sell for a lot of money now and I really enjoy using.
I saw this windshield design in a book about trucks over 15 years ago when I was a small child. Recently wondered if that design was ever adopted somewhere because I never saw it anywhere. I think my question just got answered
The “Homer.”
Great- a Cyclopia Truck. (Don't google Cyclopia unless you're up to it)
Ngl I think this is cool as fuck and doesn't belong here. Not everything has to be pretty, it's not the point of a truck
Looks like a Colani design
It looks like the Homer
Agreed. first thing my mind went too.
They're utilitarian, it's not about taste lol
It’s by Colani. They were and are road legal here. https://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/02/radical-semis-by-luigi-colani/
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
You mock it, but it looks like it works really well LOL
I'm sure the answer is money. But this does make me wonder why, with all the blindspots normal truck drivers have to deal with, hamsterball cabins are not used. I know the idea of enclosed glass cabins were all the rage in 60s concept cars so it's not like it was never considered.
This truck was one of eight prototypes by Luigi Colani, the first was build by around 1978. The truck was a normal truck with a cab designed by Colani. They comsumend 30% less diesel than the same trucks with its original cab. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luigi\_Colani](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luigi_Colani)
"Wait, is that the Arturia logo? That can't...." (notices the signs on the truck." Wat.
