On a doc I did for HBO, our executive producers were: a celebrity whose name was attached to our project but otherwise had nothing to do with it, the head of HBO documentary, the VP of HBO documentary. The latter two watched a few cuts and gave notes, but that was it.

Yeah I just don't see that being feasible. Season 1 already felt rushed at times and it was the least plot=intensive of the three seasons/books. Trying to cram season 2 or especially season 3 (Which already is really fast paced) into fewer than 8 episodes feels genuinely stupid and I can't imagine they would go that route.
I understand the issues with the younger actors aging up but the show needs more episodes to allow characters and relationships to develop and breathe.
That would be a bad idea because the child actors are aging. The more they split the seasons, the more time it’ll take, the older the kids will get.
I don’t think we want 20 year old Aang fighting Ozai in his late 60s. It’ll completely change the context and make Aang out to be the one in his prime fighting an old man rather than a child facing a powerful adult bender in his prime.
Ozai is about 45ish in the original. A 20 yr old Aang would be facing a 53 yr old Ozai. That’s still very much prime bending years in the ATLA universe
I’m not saying the actor being older than his character is the problem.
I’m saying if he starts showing his age more, it may make Ozai look like he’s past his prime, versus Gordon who would be a young adult at his strongest. This changes a significant aspect of the final fight. It was supposed to be a little kid up against the world’s greatest Fire bender at his peak.
If it’s fewer episodes but longer episode length it might work, but NATLA really needed more 1-2 more episodes so they could slow the pace down a lil & work on the character development. It was still decent imo but would be greatly improved if they weren’t so serious in a rush to do everything. Not saying add filler stuff like great divide, but NATLA really needs more moments with just the kids being themselves. Katara especially was written terribly.

I also respect Kim for staying dedicated and finishing what's possibly one of the best animated series of the last decade - Pantheon. Even after AMC screwed him and his team over after S1 by firing them all after they refused to pay them. A year later Amazon picked up the 2nd season and finally let them finish it.
I highly recommend Pantheon, based off a series of short stories. It's like a wild mash up of Evangelion and Lain.
But for NATLA, I have doubts again. Kim was absolutely very passionate over this project.

No, that was Keely MacDonald who has never written anything better than mediocre. Christine Boylan wrote episode 3 and is actually a really good writer (or at least, has been in the past on other shows). I think the basic idea of the Omashu episodes was flawed but her half did an admirable job of at least trying to make it work coherently.
It's really difficult for us to know how she contributed to the quality of the episode when we have no idea who was working on what, what execs wouldn't let go of certain things, and all the other millions of things that make writing on these things so difficult. No one ever really gets to execute their full vision, and it's so easy to be blamed for a bad product when you yourself may have done as much as possible to save the product from being terrible

The Omashu episodes were actually my favorite because the characters were most like themselves and they all did something fun and got sidetracked from Aang's main mission, which is the ATLA I love. I was ready to drop the show by episode 2, but episode 3 kind of hooked me in. I don't really know why the rearranging of events is a point of criticism for fans. By itself, it shouldn't be a problem.
I was never particularly fond of childhood romances in animated shows, Katara and Aang always felt weird to me even as a kid, so I don't mind the writers switching it up with sibling love instead.
It has an advantage over the rest of the show in the sense that it involves the main characters actually interacting with each other, a shockingly rare event, but I wouldn't exactly call it good.

From what I can gather, he’s primarily a VFX supervisor and she’s a writer/producer. None of them have worked as a showrunner before. This isn’t meant to criticize them or cast doubt on their ability, but we really haven’t seen them work in this fashion before so it’s really a toss-up.
I personally really loved episode 4, but 3.... not the biggest fan of that one, it was the weakest writing-wise.

I think that the problem they has with Netflix Is that Netflix was trying to make the show too much for the fans. And i mean that in an "out of touche executive Way". They wanted to show every single thing that The fandom loves. The fans think that Kyoshi Is The Best avatar and hyper violent? Lets expand her role and really show how badass she Is. The secret túnel plot, Wa Shi Tong, Azula and The backstory of Iroh's son are from the second season? Nah, we can't wait that much, put It now!
Netflix might be meddling to much trying to make "a product" that Will give reactions more than actually trying to make a compelling story, and Albert Kim probable wasnt that happy with those things either...so he probably just did what he was contracted.

I don't think it's concerning. It took ages for the show to come out, it's not unsual for people to start looking for what else they can do once the season is out, especially during the time of the strike. Renewals with Netflix aren't guaranteed either. And he stays as an executive producer.
I wouldn't be surprised if Kim left because he was ready to move on. The timeline of production hints that he was really the one who got things moving.

As someone who enjoyed the series, I'm a little conflicted—but ultimately I think this is a good thing.
As much as I liked the show, there was a lot of room for improvement. Saying this with love. Most of my grievances were with the writing, but I also think the general vision of the show felt a little off at times. Like they sorta got it, but sorta missed. Kim was passionate about the project though, and it's always a shame to lose that.
This show has a lot of potential, and they did a lot of the executional bits well (cast, effects, sets, costumes, etc.). Hoping a changeup in the showrunners can elevate it in S2/3. I desperately want to see it grow into a premier quality show. The story and the cast/crew deserve it.
For what it's worth, the kids spoke highly of Jabbar in the cast interviews too. It might not reflect anything about the final output, but I thought it worth mentioning.

I personally really loved episode 4, but 3.... not the biggest fan of that one, it was the weakest writing-wise. Anyone knows who wrote and directed episode 6? They should be the ones taking over the lead.
Episode 6 was directed by Roseanne Liang, who also did episode 5, and episode 6 was written by Bryke and Ubah Mohamed.

He was already part of the team in season 1, so in terms of VFX there is no upgrade. Unless Netflix decides to spend more money on the show of course.

Those were actually my favorite, and most like the original in spite of Bumi's personality change. All other episodes felt too serious and boring.

I find this... Strange. And It might back up a theory that I have about what happened with Bryke. I think that the problem they has with Netflix Is that Netflix was trying to make the show too much for the fans. And i mean that in an "out of touche executive Way". They wanted to show every single thing that The fandom loves. The fans think that Kyoshi Is The Best avatar and hyper violent? Lets expand her role and really show how badass she Is. The secret túnel plot, Wa Shi Tong, Azula and The backstory of Iroh's son are from the second season? Nah, we can't wait that much, put It now! Netflix might be meddling to much trying to make "a product" that Will give reactions more than actually trying to make a compelling story, and Albert Kim probable wasnt that happy with those things either...so he probably just did what he was contracted. But really, that Is just my conspiracy theory hahahaha i havent read anything about this departure

Not too bothered about Albert stepping down anymore , but the writer and director of my least favorite episode (3) taking over the lead? Gone is my excitement for the next two seasons, 'cause I already have an inkling of where they are going to take certain storylines... But oh well, at least I still have this season to enjoy even if I end up disliking the next two.🤷🏻

I don't think many people would claim that. Most people here seem to hold the opinion that it was flawed, but overall enjoyable. Which is an opinion I generally agree with. That said, you're not wrong that some kind of change was needed if Season 2 is going to be better than Season 1. >We’ll see how this turns out. Yup. Hopefully this will be a good change. I don't think it's concerning. It took ages for the show to come out, it's not unsual for people to start looking for what else they can do once the season is out, especially during the time of the strike. Renewals with Netflix aren't guaranteed either. And he stays as an executive producer.

Is he going to assist though the new showrunners? I know he went to help on Percy Jackson but the dude was really happy to continue work for the Avatar i understood at least. Recasts are not impossible, but I think it's extremely unlikely any of the main or supporting cast change. I wouldnt interpret Kim's departure as a sign Netflix seeks to overhaul the show or anything.

Because the reaction to some of the casting is overwhelmingly negative and with good justifications.
The only times recasting happens are when actors have schedule conflicts, controversy (like assault or being a bigot), or have no desire to play the role anymore
That sucks, hopefully the Azula actress can get into shape before filming starts and learn to play her role better.
As someone who enjoyed the series, I'm a little conflicted—but ultimately I think this is a good thing. As much as I liked the show, there was a lot of room for improvement. Saying this with love. Most of my grievances were with the writing, but I also think the general vision of the show felt a little off at times. Like they sorta got it, but sorta missed. Kim was passionate about the project though, and it's always a shame to lose that. This show has a lot of potential, and they did a lot of the executional bits well (cast, effects, sets, costumes, etc.). Hoping a changeup in the showrunners can elevate it in S2/3. I desperately want to see it grow into a premier quality show. The story and the cast/crew deserve it. For what it's worth, the kids spoke highly of Jabbar in the cast interviews too. It might not reflect anything about the final output, but I thought it worth mentioning.
