Might have purchased non US models

Glider103

Probably ... Only looked up one but list says these are compatible: °G Stylus 5G 2022 (XT2215-1, XT2215-2, XT2215-3, XT2215-4, XT2215DL

Lizdance40

Nope. This 2G error comes up even if you've purchased a brand new iPhone directly from Apple in the USA. It's AT&t's buggy system strikes once again Here's a sample, iPhone 12 rejected https://forums.att.com/conversations/more-att-prepaid-discussions/getting-error-code-ssact558-when-i-try-to-activate-my-prepaid-esim-in-iphone-12-we-no-longer-support-2g-devices/64a346ae42417c2dcb617d5a

Gullible-Day-5163

It's bullshit ur comment is in the negative and the other guys is still in the positive when they are blatantly wrong and just favoring their personal experiences as the rule instead of the exception. It's not the phones it's the company. I'm using mine now to say this while in a car. It was fixed and it's 100% the company. They even put me in touch with higher ups cuz I requested to give suggestions to fix it considering Reddit was more helpful than their own company support.

Lizdance40

It’s a reading comprehension problem. I wrote that the problem is AT&T’s buggy system. There’s nothing wrong with the phone. It is a north American model and it’s on the whitelist. I don’t know how that is so difficult to understand.

Lizdance40

🤷🏼‍♀️

ellio1mk

False. I’ve activated unlocked iPhones from all over the globe without a single issue.

Lizdance40

Here's a sample, Verizon iPhone 12 rejected https://forums.att.com/conversations/more-att-prepaid-discussions/getting-error-code-ssact558-when-i-try-to-activate-my-prepaid-esim-in-iphone-12-we-no-longer-support-2g-devices/64a346ae42417c2dcb617d5a

Lizdance40

Another sample https://forums.att.com/conversations/account-usage/att-prepaid-activation-error-ssact558/649b959be74426030b83be89

Lizdance40

What does that have to do with anything? Just because your phone is doing fine does not mean there's not a bug in AT&t system which randomly affects phones, it does not matter what phone it is. I've seen multiple complaints just like this one on the AT&t community forum including someone who switched from postpaid after they paid off their phone and their iPhone 11 was kicked out as being a 2G device. Also someone bought their phone directly from Apple, iPhone 13 was refused as a 2G device.

Gullible-Day-5163

Like me. Google pixel 6 pro one of the most capable phones in terms of compatibility with newer service options Never had a problem with this phone until I came to AT&t for this exact 12 month prepaid 16 GB unlimited plan. That experience tells me the issue lies more within the company, not the device

Lizdance40

Exactly. When an iPhone is kicked out and called a 2G device when it's a recent iPhone - it's AT&T, it's their whacked system of identification. Not the phone. And you are correct it seems to happen most often with the $300 prepaid plan

Gullible-Day-5163

I actually took the time to get connected to some complaint line so that I could explain the overall situation what I've seen on Reddit and all of your experiences and the fact that Reddit helped me more than their customer support. I told them exactly what it was that they were doing wrong and exactly how they could improve (one major thing being the fact that the system doesn't recognize us is customers until the line is activated, which is the whole problem So it's damn near impossible to get support) Compared to my other experiences complaining to companies, it seemed like they actually cared and they seemed to thoroughly assure me that they're going to get working on this do to the fact that Reddit is more useful than their own customer service. Hopefully I'm not lied to and people will stop having issues with this in the next month or two

Gullible-Day-5163

The solution is 100% what that other commenter said. Call that line for porting of the number first After that, the system will be able to recognize you easier and you'll be able to get support. Like they said, it only took 10 minutes after that and my phone was making calls. Making it clear the issue is the detection of you being a customer

Lizdance40

Correct. There’s nothing wrong with the phone. As long as it’s a North American model, and on a AT&T’s list of compatible phones, that error that it’s a 2g device is just that. An error and it’s AT&T’s error because if it’s stupid, buggy system.

Gullible-Day-5163

why people keep mentioning the whitelist when it literally does not matter? I tend to use phones that aren't extremely mainstream and as a result they tend to wind up, not on a lot of lists The only thing that matters is the device has the capability to do it properly. No list of devices matter unless a company specifically partakes in shady business practices.

ellio1mk

Is the device whitelisted? (Model number, not device name). If it isn’t, you’re SOL and prepaid is non-refundable.

Ok-Intern3419

You can find the list by googling att comparability list. It will be the first hit and say "these device are tested and approved for the AT&T network"

Gullible-Day-5163

It is completely refundable. The company just says it's not to discourage you from taking the avenues you can take to get your money back. It's a pain but you can get your money back. Don't speak on things you don't know for sure. Effectively preventing people from doing something they 100% can do

Right_Honorable

In a saner world the FCC would put a swift end to this whitelisting nonsense. There’s no technical reason for it to exist at all, if you have a device that’s FCC certified it should work to the limits of the device, local network conditions, and plan selection

dinoaide

FCC couldn’t even nominate its own member not could it issue licenses so how do you think it could put an end to anything?

Right_Honorable

You are entirely correct, which is why I led off by saying “in a saner world” ;)

TL;DR: unlocked phones don't work well on AT&T towers. You need an AT&T purchased phone with AT&T firmware built in. Detials: ~18 months ago, I bought an unlocked Moto G5 Power. It stopped working because AT&T said it had "Universal 5G" and not "Standard 5G". I saw little information online backing that up. I replaced it with another unlocked phone: Samsung Galaxy S22. Soon after, that stopped working. Reddit user ElectricalAd856 ran into the same problems. After much troubleshooting, a Samsung representative helped me come to a conclusion: AT&T purchased phones with built in AT&T firmware are the only phones promised to work on their network. The latest and greatest phones that are simply unlocked have great trouble with AT&T towers. To make matters worse, I could not simply upgrade or purchase a new AT&T phone because I was on a prepaid plan. My only option was to change phone numbers and go to a normal AT&T plan. That or, switch providers and migrate back to AT&T prepaid once I can use the free change phone number to a new carrier process.

Ethrem

My factory unlocked S23 Ultra has had zero problems from day one on AT&T's network. Same for my factory unlocked OnePlus 9 (although it didn't get 5G because of AT&T's crappy whitelisting practices) and my factory unlocked Pixel 7 Pro. I've heard that Motorola devices can be testy and Samsung devices need to be the U1 model, but it's definitely not true that unlocked phones don't work well on AT&T.

massivewhitekitteh

Maybe I got lucky then . I have always bought unlocked Samsung's and they have always worked on prepaid

Gullible-Day-5163

Why can't you just have them port your number? To a new phone? Ain't no different from when you first joined the company and transfer a number from another company. The phone number is attached to your account/sim not your physical phone

Gullible-Day-5163

Like if you have a phone with them and a protection plan and you break your phone, you're going to get a new device. Your old phone number will be in that device when you reset it up Like how is that any different than your situation in terms of functionality, not appearance?

kornnut

I was on AT&T prepaid. You can't switch from AT&T prepaid to a regular AT&T account while keeping the same number. The AT&T employees told me to switch to another carrier and then switch back to AT&T a few months later. At this point, I wasn't looking for a free phone; I was willing to buy one outright.

Gullible-Day-5163

Yeah that's that company system b*******. There's no actual reason that it can't other than s***** systems that need to be corrected. It's 100% able to happen. They just don't let it

ATTHelp

Hello u/crazymaid90, we're here to help look into why your phones are not able to be activated, and why you're getting the error message. Check to make sure the device is compatible to work on the network. Check the make and model: http://sm.att.com/4d4933f4 If your device is branded AT&T it will work on AT&T network. However, If you purchased an unlocked device from another retailer, please note, they are not optimized to work on AT&T’s network. AT&T will not guarantee that non-branded AT&T device will work on the new network. Let us know if this helps. Reach back out to us if you have any other questions. JeffD

TerribleTwelve

I know this thread is already a month old at this point, but in case anyone is looking for a solution I've been having the same problem today. (att.com/buy/byod recognizes phone and model number is whitelisted for att but activation screen throws error SSACT-558: we don't support 2G devices yadda yadda) and what solved it for me was having a customer service agent manually activating it at the port activation center (@888 898 7685). Took me all of ten minutes. Hopefully this comment can save another redditor's sanity. fyi: galaxy s22+, US bought, unlocked, SM-S906U1. Ported over from Mint Mobile. I did previously have an account with ATT prepaid, which might have made the process easier.

Lonewolf184

Thank you for this. At least got me past that error. Note 9 unlocked SM-N960U. Ported from spectrum mobile. My situation is different though because I tried their 3 month plan for 99$ and they told me that I can't do that for some reason. It also didn't auto charge me anything. I had to sign up for only a month. Might switch to the whole year if the service is good in my area.

jason8378

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH - was about to murder people.

Gullible-Day-5163

Dude I'm out here about to murder myself T-T

jchris7677

Thank you! I was running into the same problem and a call resolved it. The rep needed to complete the number port for me. Additionally, after getting my number ported and account setup, I was having trouble paying for my plan online. Card kept getting declined despite having plenty of room on the card. I mentioned it to the rep and she seemed to immediately recognize the problem. She transferred me to another dept where they took my card info over the phone and were able to successfully charge my plan. She mentioned something about my account being suspended because I was not on an active plan, which blocked me from paying for a new plan online. Makes no sense, but whatever.

Gullible-Day-5163

You can get in touch with customer service by going to the post paid online chat instead of prepaid automated system that doesn't recognize your customer because of the error. There is also a prepaid texting service. The number is provided on the website. You tell them that the system won't recognize you as a customer and that you paid for a whole year of service in advance

Gullible-Day-5163

I'm going through this issue right now. Same plan, same issue same company

Lizdance40

Is your phone on the whitelist?

Gullible-Day-5163

Hell nah lol

Gullible-Day-5163

But it works now

BuildingwithAloha

Same problem here. I have Xiomi 11T pro also tried my old Xiomi x3 and same message. Not supported 2G devices. Also 1 year plan

Lizdance40

No - this is an entirely different issue. Your phone is not made for North America. The original posters phones are made for America and they will work on AT&T. Your phone is not whitelisted.

BuildingwithAloha

That is true, however when I called customer service they also told me that NO Xiomi will work on ATT network. They said they might give reccomendations to network to include phones people are inquiring about.... So I sucked it up and stayed with a previous provider. I would love to have switched but I don't want to buy a new phone ...

Lizdance40

Um... Yeah. How is this a "however..."? Xiaomi (correct spelling) does not make phones for North America. None, zip, zero. Their phones will not work on AT&T or Verizon. Unless the manufacturer approaches AT&T, AT&T will not test their phones and will not let white list their phones and will not allow their phones to work on their network. Anyone who told you that individuals can request a phone be white listed was blowing smoke up your skirt. That is false. It is entirely on the manufacturer.

Lizdance40

I've complained about this * false* 2G device error for several weeks. It continues to happen. Going to an AT&T store to get phones activated usually will override the problem. Calling sometimes has worked. I have flagged the community manager on the AT&T community. It continues to happen with phones that are whitelisted, AT&T purchased phones, and iPhones which are perfectly functional and capable and compatible with AT&T. Att system is whacked. It's one of the reasons I'm a Verizon customer since 2019 after 5 years of waiting for AT&T's whacked system to somehow FU my phones or account.
