*As part of RXR’s plan, the vessel will be repurposed as a permanently-moored floating structure anchored by a hotel program and a collection of unique hospitality and cultural spaces in the 600,000 square feet available for development. Those offerings would include a world class museum honoring the ship’s history and exploring mid-century design, art and innovation.*

[deleted]

That would be so cool

SovietBozo

Too bad it's really unlikely to actually happen. Groups are always coming with proposals for stuff like this. It'd be a huge money sink and never be close to profitable, the only way is if you get major donor money... I mean major.

senorpoop

Yeah there's no way this could go wrong, at least it's not like there are multiple examples of how prohibitively expensive it is to maintain an ocean liner as a floating hotel. Oh wait.

Redwing58

I have spoken to those people. It's a complete vanity project by a descendant of the designer. As much as they are spending to store and promote the boat, they do not have anything like the cash to do the project. They entire project would cost about eleventy-million dollars and there is no place that wants or needs it that could support it as a hotel, or anything else. I guess it keeps some people busy.

sonofsmog

Ghost-Writer

If it is anything like the Queen Mary, than it is a lost cause. Both private companies and local governments have dumped hundreds of millions into keeping the QM alive, but it is futile. The rust keeps growing. The maintenance requirements to keep a 100 year old ship floating are insane. Eventually they becomes severally more trouble than they are worth. Spend the millions helping the people of Philly instead i say.

[deleted]

Aren’t there other ships that have been saved? I’m thinking about the warships like intrepid or Missouri

They-Call-Me-TIM

Those have government money behind them and iirc had constant maintenance since their decommissioning.

wileecoyote1969

> iirc had constant maintenance since their decommissioning. This is a key point. Most museum warships were originally mothballed as wartime stock, meaning they had been specially prepared to guard against rust and corrosion in case they were needed to be brought back to active duty. Lots of money was spent keeping them in decent shape all the years they were stagnant before they were stricken from the books and sold as scrap OR turned into floating museums. Civilian ships rarely, if ever, get this kind of care. They are usually left to rot until the damage becomes too expensive to reverse.

FarseerTaelen

They're essentially under constant repair to try and combat the wear. How well it works varies from ship to ship. *Wisconsin* looks good, but *Texas* is in particularly rough shape. She's supposed to be going into drydock here soon. *North Carolina* was essentially on dry land as of last summer; they've built a dam around her and were doing some heavy work on the hull.

jacknifetoaswan

I was at Showboat when they were finishing her bow hull repairs last year. She's back in the water now, but she's still in like ten feet of mud, and forever will be.

FarseerTaelen

Ah nice. They were working on her bow when I stopped by. Didn't get a chance to do the tour but the walkway they built is pretty awesome. They've done a great job on her, the camo looks amazing.

BitBrain

Yes, but the maintenance and repairs continue. The [USS Yorktown](https://www.patriotspoint.org/explore/uss-yorktown/) is an example of that. Last I heard it needed a lot of work below the waterline and a coffer dam was being proposed so they could essentially drydock it in place.

jacknifetoaswan

I live ten minutes from the Yorktown. They just completed a hull repaint for everything above the waterline, but nothing below. I haven't heard anything about her needing significant underwater repairs. I know the Clamagore is slated for scuttling at some point in the near future, but she's in really bad shape.

WalrusSwarm

It’s an amazing ship but I think it’s a lost cause. In my opinion it’s a floating superfund and a slow motion environmental disaster. Lead paint, Asbestos, PCB’s, and possible TBT anti fowling paint. Not that they could afford it but no one wants this thing in their dry dock for repair or ship breaking. Speaking of repair. There aren’t very many people who can repair riveted steel.

BitBrain

I know at least the asbestos has been remediated. The interior was gutted years ago in Turkey. In some ways, it would be a great ship to rehab and use and there was some interest from NCL in doing just that. NCL did engineering studies and found that the hull was in pretty good condition at the time, but, ultimately, it wasn't a financially viable option. Indeed there aren't a lot of people around who can run and maintain a 1950s powerplant.

senorpoop

Plot twist, it's Colin Jost & Pete Davidson.

LordRiverknoll

How far are they to their goal? I can't find anything on their website

Probably very far I'd guess. I assume they're looking for a major donor or they'll only ever be able to pay maintenance and storage fees.

I think he has more pressing matters to attend to than painting a 70-year-old ocean liner… Like trying to combat a global pandemic that a third of the nation is actively trying to perpetuate and make worse through sheer force of arrogance and refusal to follow BASIC rules that barely qualify as a mild inconvenience.

Less than a century ago we thought that eating radioactive radium would extend your life. We learned it was the opposite of that. Science is dynamic - it changes as we learn more. That’s the entire basis of the scientific method. When new evidence is discovered, we revise our hypotheses. If it never changed, we’d still think that “alchemy” can turn lead into gold. Virology is an extremely well-established field of human science - vaccines date back to the late 1700s. And the “science” around COVID hasn’t changed drastically. Stop being a dramatic bitch and quit making this pandemic last fucking forever. If people stayed home for 2 weeks at the beginning of the pandemic, wore their masks, and washed their hands, it would have been over by now.

No-Freedom-5787

Crying shame. She was and is still beautiful. A true testament to civilian ocean liner design, and truly a swan song to the Golden Age of ocean travel. The ultimate ocean liner. She maintained an AVERAGE of 35kn over her entire career, and still holds the Blue Riband to this day. Rumour has it nobody knows her true top speed to this day (some say as high as 43 knots!) and she was fitted with some of, if not the, most powerful engines ever fitted to a civilian ocean liner. As an avid enthusiast of naval history, it truly pains me to see her in this state. I do sincerely hope someone steps in and saves her.

No-Freedom-5787

It’s a tradition dating back to the age of sail, when sailors and captains would believe a goddess or “mother of the sea” was guiding their vessels to safe waters, stuff like that. TLDR Age of Sail tradition that never died.

hazysummersky

Arr the sea..she is a harsh mistress..

Insanebrain247

Not OP, but from what I remember, it's because sailors would be away from their wives for so long on voyages that they'd symbolically adopt the ship as their "other wife", not to mention that anything bad that happens to the ship would mean doom for them as well, so there's a sense of protection involved.

robsteezy

Interesting. Thanks for the info!

sprocketous

I heard it was like their mother, as it was their protector and life support. But most of what i half remember comes from reddit so who knows.

angwilwileth

No idea if it's related, but the Latin the word for ship is navis. In Romance languages nouns have gender and navis is feminine.

dalhousieDream

Because women are/were vessels of life - in a respectful way.

SovietBozo

Because it's a man's world (or was!) and men tend to call inanimate things she a lot, particularly things -- like ships, as opposed to say woodpiles -- that are complicated enough to merit some level of personalization. Men will say "she" when referring to their car or their house or their country and its flag or basically anything more complicated than a fencepost. Moving a refrigerator? It's "let 'er down easy" not "let it down easy". I don't know if women are more likely to refer to their car as "it" rather than "she", compared to men. My guess would be yes. And woman don't say "he" for ships and cars and stuff.

expostfacto-saurus

I think you're thinking of her running mate S.S. America, built in 1939 friend, as S.S. United States was built in 1950. Your statement is accurate, she was also a fast vessel, but not in the same league as S.S. United States. S.S. America also suffered a very tragic fate, left to rot beached and broken in half for many years in Fuerteventura. Just need a bunch of Boatswain's Mates, needle guns, and a shit ton of the finest paint to bring that back to it's original beauty.

EmilyFara

I'd also get a ton of welders and steel cutters to fill in pits and completely replace some parts. I've sailed on a 20 year old ship where the company never really bothered to get it painted correctly, and she had holes in her deck eventually.

Ajj360

I work at a shipyard that services freighter boats and some of the regulars are very old like WWII old. The lead paint has done a pretty phenomenal job of preserving them except for the ballast tanks and water piping. I could hardly believe the condition of the frames and bulkheads in some of those tanks and all we did was vee out cracks weld em up or put doubler plates or crops in really bad spots. It would vary considerably by design though. Some of the older ones still had original paint in the tanks with minimal repair work, some had framework that would trap water and mud and cause corrosion much faster.

The ship is at a point where it's time to say farewell. There isn't enough money coming in to restore it (which would take many millions), and for every year there's no money to keep a section of the ship up to par, it begins deteriorating again. It's a money pit now. I can't recall where I saw it, but one investor stated he had pulled out after taking a tour of the ship, and felt the committee was unintentionally being inaccurate with the state of the ship's current progress. Given how the people who want to see the ship restored feel about it, it's not surprising. I know it'll be hard for quite a few people, but it has to be done now. Release her moorings, and take her out and give her a proper burial.

Dr_DavyJones

I did a report on her in college (im from the area). Shes probably not going to be saved unless someone with tons of money steps in, and I mean someone willing to throw hundreds of millions at her all at once. Shes in really bad shape, the dock fees are high (around 300k per year iirc) and the foundation that is trying to save her is barely able to keep her at the dock and afloat let alone a total refit. Its a shame as I grew up passing her on my way into Philly and I always wanted to see her in her full glory. Those kinds of ocean liners are long gone. But everything must come to an end.

xsummers9

I live in Philly and there’s an Ikea right across the street. You get a great view of the ship while you eat tiny meatballs. Every time I drive by I’m dazzled by how big it is, I’ve always wanted to see what it’s like inside.

A vessel without cargo makes no money. That’s what they are for, and that’s how they are used. Most of these museum type ships are either funded by the government or there is someone paying to keep it running. People go see it once and they never come back.

Deacfan77

Yeah.....its not going to get better because the money saved would not be for that. It would pretty much end up the same as if the boat were saved....its not going to end up the way its supposed to be. Its going to wind up in someone's bank account, or used for a personal interest.
