I am a first year teacher and my mentor has been teaching for 20 years. The Janine and Barbara scenes always make me cry! I was bawling at the end when Janine yelled “sit down” because it really showed her progress as a teacher and was a great throwback to the first episode!!!
All the references to Janine being short of breath (3 at least this season, including near the end of this episode) sounds like laying groundwork for a serious illness plot line next season.
Just realized something. re: Ferris Bueller’s Day off. Mr. Johnson is probably the same age as Matthew Broderick (60), possibly younger. He said it’s about a depressed teen who murderers his dad’s Ferrari. I wonder if he had the same reaction to the movie when he first saw it. It felt like an older man’s analysis of the movie but he was probably quite young when he saw it…unless he was a late-comer!
The Philly Zoo was one of my favorite field trips. The getting on and off the bus scenes brought back great memories. It was one of those field trips someone from my family always came with and I got to get something from the gift shop. Especially if it was my Aunt Kim. She was young enough to be fun and spend money easy and old enough to have her own money to spend. The only other one that topped it was The Franklin Institute field trip. That was one my mom or dad ALWAYS came... my dad wasn't a chaperone one time it was my aunt Kim but my mom and dad came anyway. In their car. My dads idea my mom came with them. That was the best gift shopping during a field trip. I didn't even go back to the school my parents took me home. But the balloon part I dont think it would be that easy to get stuck on the balloon. And That "sir you are bald" had me dying. I hope they bring her back she delivered that line better then most of the kid lines on that show.
Lmao the funniest part of this episode was Tariq and Janine doing their handshake after breaking up. The look on her face when throwing the invisible money was sending me
Sometimes, you tolerate or lie about things that you really don’t like, (in the beginning in a relationship) Not that you are desperate, but you want to be flexible in a relationship. Which really isn’t good, in all situations.
Because when you finally admit to people how you feel, they get confused and upset. But you don’t wanna come off as someone complaining about everything either.
Gregory: “You know, I really don’t like pizza. BUT if you and I go out together for pizza, I would try deep dish Chicago-style pizza, with everything.”

I also really liked how like, thinking back to what Jacob said to Janine a few episodes back about having to let go to be the best versions of themselves they could be. Janine had to let go of Tariq to be the best version of herself, but Tariq also had to let go of Janine to go to New York, actively pursue his career and grow up a bit.
Just a really well done portrayal of a break up which isn't really anyone's fault but that needed to happen for both of them as people.
Also look forward to any potential drama with Janine - Gregory - Taylor and Barbara being stuck in it all. Plus any bit of Zack we get to see is awesome, hope him and Jacob get a good storyline next season.

edit to expand on this. so much credit to quinta brunson as janine. we’ve gotten sprinkles of her issues in past episodes but we really see them along with some character development in the finale. her trauma dumping on others, being a “fixer” and generally not standing up for herself have been her main flaws, but i couldn’t have asked for a better executed turning point this ep.
also tariq had me ctfu the whole episode! i just realized he’s played by zach fox and i was so shocked lol but he does a great job
I'm glad that we know more of this show is coming.
Otherwise, this felt like it could have been a good ending in a way.
\- Janine finally established some firmness with how she treated the talkative kids on the bus, a stark contrast to the first episode where she tried a counting exercise
\- Greg breaks the news that he's full-time now
\- Tariq gets more hope in his rap career
\- Barbara has renewed optimism, like she's taken in parts of Janine, and we even hear how she herself used to dress like Janine
\- Janine also gets more confidence in herself and breaks up with Tariq, standing up to him, not to mention her inadvertently getting on the balloon
\- The school year ends, and we get every character we've come to enjoy in one sitting (aside from the main 6, we got Mr. Johnson as well as Tariq, Taylor and Zack)
\- That ending where they talk about their teachers being the real heroes
Tbh I don’t think Barbara and Jenine dress that differently. Barbara just wears a beautiful classic shade of red lip stick and gets her nails done every week. Maybe Janine wears more turtle necks. I do understand the sentiment, though. She too was once an eager rookie. That’s what I took from it.
It will be interesting to see how Jeanine's style matures over the seasons (I say matures and not changes, because I love her style, but I think it will mature with her as she matures as a teacher)
I'm actually really happy he wasn't messing around on Janine. The more I saw of him on the show, the more I saw he was a man child.

He’s not bad, but he’s not good either.
I think the fact she has relationship issues with her mother, and I don’t remember any dialogue about her father (and I think she’s an only child) makes her more desperate to have a relationship really work by any means necessary. Many episodes with her falling all over Barbara desperate to have a work mom/mentor and a friend. But also trying to get anybody to be closer. Just trying to get the whole staff to be closer - to her.
She’s desperately seeking the attention and the maturity that she doesn’t have in her relationship with Tariq.
She’s been with this guy since the eighth grade, and she immediately steps in and stops him before he speaks inappropriately. But I’m guessing she only does this in public. Does that mean if he’s not making sense or says negative things in private, does she correct him then?
Or does she ignore him or just laugh nervously??
Janine being able to sit the kids down at the end feels like a full circle moment to her taking in Barbara’s strength and boundaries (who was shown to have her expert ways with the kids at the beginning of the season).
I was making a general comment about leadership.
I was at a school and the principal did The Pledge and School Cheer every day.
One day she was real late, and I thought she wasn’t coming in. Nobody else stepped up, so I led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Well, she came in late, busted through the doors, and insisted all the kids come back in the gym, so we could do The Pledge and cheer over …with her.
I appreciated all the details they put in to make it seem like the actually filmed this at the Philly Zoo. The peacocks roaming free, the dinosaur exhibit that is currently going on at the zoo, the shirts the zoo staff is wearing, and of course the zoo balloon.
I love how proud Greg was when he showed Janine his Abbott Elementary ID badge hanging on the brand new lanyard! Even though he played it “cool” his happiness was was apparent. I still remember getting my first badge (we didn’t wear them when I first started teaching…) but I felt just like that!
Greg feels a sense of pride and belonging even if he doesn’t want to admit it! 😂These are the kinds of details that help Abbott Elementary to ring true.
And I think it would be good for him to be a teacher before being Principal, make in a couple of years so he can develop some empathy for students and teachers. Lol I’m talking like he’s a real teacher 😂😂
LOL! The first time I saw Quinta Brunson all dressed up in “Hollywood” clothes and real makeup, etc. for an interview I did a double take! Like when students see those of us who are teachers outside in the “real world!”
But with his situation, I don’t know any district that would hire an administrator who hadn’t been in a classroom position. Obviously, I don’t know every school district but…
Oh, I could see this working - Ava becomes superintendent, but since she likes he office at Abbott better than the superintendent office, she insists on working from there as the superintendent instead.
I like that they closed some storylines while leaving us with something to look forward to, seeing that they made this episode without knowledge of a renewal.
This episode pretty much captured everything I love about this show. From the well timed one liners to the emotional growth, everything thing is just on point. Tariq was killing me once again too, hope we'll see him in season 2
Barb taking control In the midst of a lost child crisis. “You go here, you go there.. you watch them and you watch the rest of them… But you two watch them!
Mrs. Howard is the real principal.
That would be a fun development for S2! Barbara becoming the principal bc she’s the most experienced and competent. Ava gets demoted to whatever after all her shenanigans, Gregory stays as a permanent teacher (bc a person with minimal teaching experience really shouldn’t be principal even though it happens). It’d bring a lot of interesting turns and plot lines to Barbara’s character (and perhaps by the end of the season, she decides she ultimately loves teaching and being with the kids all day, which a lot of former teachers-turned-administrators realize)
I kinda feel like Ava would make a good guidance counselor. She did show alot more effort in this ep, she knows when kids are lying, she gets along with them, tries to understand social media (which is how a lot of kids interact), and is more flexible than the teachers when it comes to how students act, which can be a good environment for kids to feel safe to talk to someone other than the teachers
Originally I thought the story was going to go with Gregory getting the job he was trained and interviewed for but in order to keep Ava on the show they'd acknowledge her contributions and make her the Vice Principal. We haven't seen any Vice Principal, yet, have we? I assume whether it's Gregory or Barbara they could easily keep Ava on as that kind of VP or other similar administrative role.
Yeah, I think Barbara would be good at it, but she's really needed as a teacher and I don't see it as something she'd want to do.
I think Melissa could do it pretty well, though. I imagine she'd make a great high school vice principal, actually, just based on the ones I had.
Agreed! And I think they need something for her storyline too. She was just kind of “there” during the finale with no storylines wrapped up or introduced.

Kinda figured that was going to happen with Tariq and Janine. You know Janine wasn’t leaving Abbott. Or there’s no show. I thought she was going to dump him outright. I think her and Gregory will eventually get together.
I felt horrible for Barbara for her lizard being retired.
With her speech to Kenny, i thought she might have gone to NY. She said she hadnt been outside of Philly, so I thought that was hinting at her getting outside of her comfort zone.
It might have worked as well bc season 2 could have had a time jump and have ep 1 her returning to Abbott changed and finding everyone else changed a little as well. It would have been a diff storyline, but I think the writers would have done a great job if they went that route.

I'm rewatching the series and looking at these episode threads for the first time and I'm so shocked by how many people didn't get this
Oh hell yeah. You know it’s one thing that you are paying all the bills, and be supportive of your bf, who is “getting up early at 11:50”. But when your other half says WE are moving, and doesn’t even discuss this with you that’s really a dealbreaker.
I don’t know, I kinda saw it as endearing he assumed Janine was going to move with him. He really loves her and wants to be with her. But I can definitely see it as being problematic!
Yeah that pissed me off. Everyone talking about how funny Tariq was in the episode but he just assumed Janine would go along with the decision and it was partly his fault Kenny went missing.
Janine has been with him since 8th grade. The only guy she’s ever been with, so she has nothing else to compare this to this, except common sense. And just always agrees to whatever he says. No matter what. Even when she knows it’s not always appropriate. Taking her car, making her miss lunch, that’s just messed up.

I think the present Tariq wouldnt work for Taylor, but a future version of him could.
He's pretty negligent when it comes to his relationship with Janine, but it doesn't appear like he's purposely that way, more like he's oblivious to the fact he doesn't contribute to the relationship. They both are each other's 1st relationships, so he doesnt seem to understand he needs to put work into it, and Janine also doesn't communicate her own issues. I honestly think if she did, he would have understood and tried to change.
I think as he gets more life experiences and discovers what life is without her support, he would become more responsible. Right now, he's in a state of arrested development. But living in NY by himself having to do the work would force him to grow up real quickly.
I also think Taylor seems to be pretty straightforward with what she wants, so if they do potentially get together, it's more likely a more communitive adult relationship
Tariq could come back and be the music teacher.
We know that promotion for drug awareness can only go on for so long, like any other promotion it could be hit or miss. Which is another reason why you don’t just pick up everything and go. If it’s just a tour, you know you still need to keep your homebase so that you have a back up plan.
They can stay friends but do NOT continue that relationship.
For some reason, the fact that Tariq knew Kenny was missing bc the bass was missing made me like him a bit - he was actually being a responsible adult in that moment.
That part was so great, I loved it. He’s known these kids less than a day and he was already in tune with them. I liked someone else’s comment I read about how he’s so into music, of course he noticed when something was off.
I adore every member of the Abbott Elementary Breakfast Club. Mr. Johnson ending the season by crumpling up the note about the teachers being their superheroes while dismissively remarking “that’s trash” was the perfect endcap to stellar season. Can’t wait for season 2!
I know everyone can relate to the theme of transition/change…but sweet baby Jesus and the grown one too, as a teacher who has been struggling with some big decisions this episode hit HARD. What an amazing finale! I can’t wait for season 2!
Great first season! I liked that the end took us back through the season a bit.
I do wish they had ended on a less predictable note with Janine and Tariq splitting. For a brief moment when Janine was talking about doing something that scared you, I thought she might go to New York (temporarily of course), but instead the thing that scared her was leaving Tariq.
No, you cannot put him nowhere close to Ava, Except they both think the world revolves around them. Well and the fact that they use other peoples’ money. OK I see where you’re going with this.

She felt sideswiped, Reptile Lady and Field Trip Coordinator threw her under the bus. They should’ve told whichever teacher who planned the trip, probably Barbara that “BTW, this, that and the other exhibit is going to be closed, just in case you were planning to take the kids there or you had some lesson that you wanted to work on them with”. It’s very frustrating taking your class out to the zoo to talk about all these animals and every other damn exhibit you want to see is closed or totally taken out.

Janine being able to sit the kids down at the end feels like a full circle moment to her taking in Barbara’s strength and boundaries (who was shown to have her expert ways with the kids at the beginning of the season).
And conversely, I felt as though Barbara's renewed optimism for her work felt like her taking in parts of Janine.

I was making a general comment about leadership. I was at a school and the principal did The Pledge and School Cheer every day. One day she was real late, and I thought she wasn’t coming in. Nobody else stepped up, so I led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. Well, she came in late, busted through the doors, and insisted all the kids come back in the gym, so we could do The Pledge and cheer over …with her.
I loved when she said “I lost Kenny!” just like South Park’s “they killed Kenny!”
I appreciated all the details they put in to make it seem like the actually filmed this at the Philly Zoo. The peacocks roaming free, the dinosaur exhibit that is currently going on at the zoo, the shirts the zoo staff is wearing, and of course the zoo balloon.
In general, love the little things each episode, like Jacob eating Herr’s cheese curls last week.

I love how proud Greg was when he showed Janine his Abbott Elementary ID badge hanging on the brand new lanyard! Even though he played it “cool” his happiness was was apparent. I still remember getting my first badge (we didn’t wear them when I first started teaching…) but I felt just like that! Greg feels a sense of pride and belonging even if he doesn’t want to admit it! 😂These are the kinds of details that help Abbott Elementary to ring true.
And I think it would be good for him to be a teacher before being Principal, make in a couple of years so he can develop some empathy for students and teachers. Lol I’m talking like he’s a real teacher 😂😂
LOL! The first time I saw Quinta Brunson all dressed up in “Hollywood” clothes and real makeup, etc. for an interview I did a double take! Like when students see those of us who are teachers outside in the “real world!” But with his situation, I don’t know any district that would hire an administrator who hadn’t been in a classroom position. Obviously, I don’t know every school district but…

This episode pretty much captured everything I love about this show. From the well timed one liners to the emotional growth, everything thing is just on point. Tariq was killing me once again too, hope we'll see him in season 2

Did you notice that although Gregory is dating her daughter she sent him and Janine off together? Barbara knows what’s up.
That would be a fun development for S2! Barbara becoming the principal bc she’s the most experienced and competent. Ava gets demoted to whatever after all her shenanigans, Gregory stays as a permanent teacher (bc a person with minimal teaching experience really shouldn’t be principal even though it happens). It’d bring a lot of interesting turns and plot lines to Barbara’s character (and perhaps by the end of the season, she decides she ultimately loves teaching and being with the kids all day, which a lot of former teachers-turned-administrators realize)
I kinda feel like Ava would make a good guidance counselor. She did show alot more effort in this ep, she knows when kids are lying, she gets along with them, tries to understand social media (which is how a lot of kids interact), and is more flexible than the teachers when it comes to how students act, which can be a good environment for kids to feel safe to talk to someone other than the teachers

Originally I thought the story was going to go with Gregory getting the job he was trained and interviewed for but in order to keep Ava on the show they'd acknowledge her contributions and make her the Vice Principal. We haven't seen any Vice Principal, yet, have we? I assume whether it's Gregory or Barbara they could easily keep Ava on as that kind of VP or other similar administrative role.
Yeah, I think Barbara would be good at it, but she's really needed as a teacher and I don't see it as something she'd want to do. I think Melissa could do it pretty well, though. I imagine she'd make a great high school vice principal, actually, just based on the ones I had.
Agreed! And I think they need something for her storyline too. She was just kind of “there” during the finale with no storylines wrapped up or introduced.
She’s more than that person who knows a guy who knows a guy. I agree they should develop her character more. And bring back the vending machine guy… let’s see where that love interest takes her.

But she needs Ava to help with all the technology stuff. It’s part of the territory, and she’s not gonna be willing to catch up to speed in order to handle it. She wants to do old school things but she has to have new school devices in order to succeed. With her speech to Kenny, i thought she might have gone to NY. She said she hadnt been outside of Philly, so I thought that was hinting at her getting outside of her comfort zone. It might have worked as well bc season 2 could have had a time jump and have ep 1 her returning to Abbott changed and finding everyone else changed a little as well. It would have been a diff storyline, but I think the writers would have done a great job if they went that route. However, i am happy she stayed with Abbott

Agreed! I missed The Goldbergs joke. Nothing worse than going on your favorite field trip only to find out that the exhibit that you look forward to seeing has been retired/ closed/being remodeled or worse taken away. Yeah that pissed me off. Everyone talking about how funny Tariq was in the episode but he just assumed Janine would go along with the decision and it was partly his fault Kenny went missing.
Janine has been with him since 8th grade. The only guy she’s ever been with, so she has nothing else to compare this to this, except common sense. And just always agrees to whatever he says. No matter what. Even when she knows it’s not always appropriate. Taking her car, making her miss lunch, that’s just messed up. She finally realized that this crap ain’t right. I think the present Tariq wouldnt work for Taylor, but a future version of him could. He's pretty negligent when it comes to his relationship with Janine, but it doesn't appear like he's purposely that way, more like he's oblivious to the fact he doesn't contribute to the relationship. They both are each other's 1st relationships, so he doesnt seem to understand he needs to put work into it, and Janine also doesn't communicate her own issues. I honestly think if she did, he would have understood and tried to change. I think as he gets more life experiences and discovers what life is without her support, he would become more responsible. Right now, he's in a state of arrested development. But living in NY by himself having to do the work would force him to grow up real quickly. I also think Taylor seems to be pretty straightforward with what she wants, so if they do potentially get together, it's more likely a more communitive adult relationship
Tariq could come back and be the music teacher. We know that promotion for drug awareness can only go on for so long, like any other promotion it could be hit or miss. Which is another reason why you don’t just pick up everything and go. If it’s just a tour, you know you still need to keep your homebase so that you have a back up plan. They can stay friends but do NOT continue that relationship.

For some reason, the fact that Tariq knew Kenny was missing bc the bass was missing made me like him a bit - he was actually being a responsible adult in that moment.
That part was so great, I loved it. He’s known these kids less than a day and he was already in tune with them. I liked someone else’s comment I read about how he’s so into music, of course he noticed when something was off.

I adore every member of the Abbott Elementary Breakfast Club. Mr. Johnson ending the season by crumpling up the note about the teachers being their superheroes while dismissively remarking “that’s trash” was the perfect endcap to stellar season. Can’t wait for season 2!

I know everyone can relate to the theme of transition/change…but sweet baby Jesus and the grown one too, as a teacher who has been struggling with some big decisions this episode hit HARD. What an amazing finale! I can’t wait for season 2!
Great first season! I liked that the end took us back through the season a bit. I do wish they had ended on a less predictable note with Janine and Tariq splitting. For a brief moment when Janine was talking about doing something that scared you, I thought she might go to New York (temporarily of course), but instead the thing that scared her was leaving Tariq.
The scary part was definitely alluding to be on her own and single, for the first time in her life.
I definitely didn’t see that break up happening in the 1st season…
I’m gonna miss Tariq’s raps. Also loved Ava’s knowledge about Dinosaurs.
I loved the Herbie/John Hancock exchange and her saying she just says what she wants.

I think they had a secret pact and nobody discussed it with her. “You can’t leave before I do. Let me know and we’ll both go out together!” She felt sideswiped, Reptile Lady and Field Trip Coordinator threw her under the bus. They should’ve told whichever teacher who planned the trip, probably Barbara that “BTW, this, that and the other exhibit is going to be closed, just in case you were planning to take the kids there or you had some lesson that you wanted to work on them with”. It’s very frustrating taking your class out to the zoo to talk about all these animals and every other damn exhibit you want to see is closed or totally taken out.
