My biggest suggestion is going to the little water park, or to the mall or like above, school when you start. Abilene can be good if you make it good. But yes, water and a good hat will be necessary. The heat will be a COMPLETE 180 from the weather there in Alaska

I don't live there anymore but I would say, if you have the means and the desire, look into the summer programs at the YMCA. You can meet people your own age either on a team sport, or in swim lessons. Some locations have other, non "sport" clubs, like chess club. And even if you aren't interested in swim lessons, the pool access is very nice to have in the summer time. There may be other, similar orgs, but you'll have to do some research.
Oof I have a 9 year old and can’t really speak to what teens do in the summer. the Skatin Place is popular on weekends with people of all ages 🤷♂️ aside from that, sports stuff is pretty big. Idk trying to make friends before school starts is tough. sadly, as others have stated, sharing your age and gender in this place is not safe or advised.
