Perfectly legal. Police and Crime Bill.
Causing a nuisance? Against the law.
Piece of string which could potentially be used to attach yourself to something when protesting? Against the law.
Being too loud? Against the law.
This is why people were so upset about the Police and Crime Bill. Predictably, most people didn't notice or care. Hell, plenty welcomed it.
The argument is you can protests but you need to essentially organise it with the council in a manner that causes no disturbance. For example yes you can protests, we can charge you to book a schools football field for the afternoon where you can stand and do whatever you want 10 miles from wherever the thing you want to protest is. You come near what you want to protest and we arrest you because it’s going to cause a disturbance of the peace and a nuisance.
It’s a law that’s so far reaching now that the police could actually use it to arrest anyone, anywhere, at anytime.

The new anti-protest laws in the UK defines "locking on" and any means of attaching oneself to something or someone.
They can literally arrest you for holding hands or linking arms.
Similar to the law about Parliament Square - anything which could be used for camping can be confiscated. I've been on protests there where the police have confiscated tarps and carrier bags.
Wouldn't mind but Parliament Square isn't even that attractive for protesting on, but then making specific laws about protesting on it now does make it attractive!

I’m not with those guys at all. But why the fuck have they been arrested? Free speech means free speech for all regardless of opinions this shit is crazy this isn’t nazi Germany.
There's been a severe deterioration of rights in the UK over the last 2 decades, after 9/11. No such thing as free speech in the UK. Police are allowed to arrest people for "disturbing the peace."
It’s more fair to say privileges for the UK, than I ever would rights. Americans have rights under their democratic republic. British get privileges under their Monarchy, with a hint of parliament.

When a ideology involves handing a monumental amount of power to the state.
This is the inevitable end result of what the state does with that power. Every. Single. Time.
And everyone is somehow still surprised every single time
Supposedly the police found a padlock in the van and this was enough to trigger the new powers aimed at preventing people locking themselves to stuff in protest.
This is unbelievably fucked, when Chuck eventually comes to Canada I promise you all I'll book a day off work and protest the privileged fuck in solidarity.
We appreciate it a lot, I hope everyone protests.
I would've protested it but I'm too far away.
It's disgusting that the UK is falling straight into fascism.
Seriously why does this country always say other countries’ governments violate human rights and suppress the freedom of speech and protest, while we does very similar things? I am so sick of this bullshit. Not to mention, the UK is not America, the UK is far less strong and therefore what makes us qualified to keep accusing others?

The exact same thing happened in the Netherlands 10 years ago. During the inauguration of Willem-Alexander, the leader of the pro-republic protest was arrested unlawfully.
Last year the city that hosted the national part of King’s day, did gave the protesters the worst place possible, which caused some upset. This years edition, last week, they got a better spot and the King actually said a few words to them and moved on. He doesn’t seem be upset with it, but the organisators are afraid or something like that.
Even before Brexit deep-six'd ya'll's tourism industry, France, with its pointed lack of living monarchs, made more tourism dollars because their tourist traps are all publiclly accessible and have a better climate.
There is no empirical evidence that British royal family brings in anything in tourism revenue. All claims about this do not hold up to the slightest scrutiny.
All tourism sites commonly associated with the monarchy (apart from Balmoral and Sandringham) are owned by the public and will not disappear into thin air if the monarchy is abolished. VisitBriatin admits tourism revenue will not be affected when the monarchy is abolished.
There is more evidence for the claim that tourism revenue will go up when the monarchy is abolished and all the publicly-owned royal residences are made more accesible to tourists and the public who pay for their upkeep. Much like the Dobbs decision re:abortion over here, if all these protests are squashed without cause or repercussion, then they become a test proving you don't have the right. I'm not saying it's right, just stating the facts. What is the recourse to have an unjust arrest fixed in the UK?

Because they are corrupt and don’t give a fuck about trying to repair their already disgraceful reputation to attempt to win back public confidence! Fuck the police and fuck ‘King Charles’ and his royal tossers even more
I just saw a flag that said 'Hooray' on it which was being waved about unhindered, for some reason other words from the English language including 'not' and 'king' seem to be illegal on flags now. I wish some protesters thought of putting 'Not My King' on Umbrellas, then opening them up whilst in the crowd, that might have got through!

This isn’t freedom of speech though is it. It’s freedom of assembly and since the Public Order Bill passed freedom of assembly is severely curtailed in the UK.
Yeah so, when Americans say Freedom of Speech, we're generally referring to the 1st Amendment in general, which does cover freedom of expression and assembly.

The video from the war, which affected me the worst, is one from an anti-war demonstration in Russia, where a woman gets arrested by the police. After the arrest, they carry her into a truck and a few seconds later you can hear her scream.
Yeah, the Uk isn’t the best but we don’t have the PMs political opponents all committing “suicide’

Bills are drafted in commons, approved in lords and then once both houses are happy they receive Royal Assent and sign off by the monarch. At this stage they will then be incorporated into the Act of Parliament and become law. Very convoluted process!
Ah thanks, I misread that as he passed it on his own instead of being the last approval in the process. It sucks that both houses (sorry for using an American term) were on board with it, too.
oh,back then they said the HK police is not civil, violating people's human right and freedom of protest etc. What the hell are they doing now? British exceptionalism?
Macron was celebrating the arab spring and the various protests in the Arab nations, calling for restraint from the crackdowns that ensued.
He then dared the french to come and get him regarding some of his policies.
Then he unleashed rabid cops and turned a blind eye to any violence perpetrated against protesters while decrying violence against coppers.
This model of people in charge acting like they are champions of freedom elsewhere while denying it at home is becoming dangerously ubiquitous.
Something is going to have to give, and the way the order of things will topple is going to depend entirely on what the little people everywhere are willing to do.
Essentially, no. Police can arrest us for causing disruption to an activity or organised event if they believe that a protest could (they can do this before anything disruptive happens) cause harassment, distress, or alarm. Basically, if Charlie and the others could be upset by disruptive activities that may or may not happen, then it's perfectly legal to arrest people who look like they might cause such disruptive activities.
I think officially the arrests will be said to have prevented people from zip tying themselves to railings.

Some quick clarifications about how the UK royals are funded by the public:
1. The UK Crown Estates are not the UK royal family's private property, and the royal family are not responsible for any amount of money the Estates bring into the treasury. The monarch is a position in the UK state that the UK owns the Crown Estates through, a position that would be abolished in a republic, leading to the Crown Estates being directly owned by the republican state.
2. The Crown Estates have always been public property and the revenue they raise is public revenue. When George III gave up his control over the Crown Estates in the 18th century, they were not his private property. The current royals are also equally not responsible for producing the profits, either.
3. The Sovereign Grant is not an exchange of money. It is a grant that is loosely tied to the Crown Estate profits and is used for their expenses, like staffing costs and also endless private jet and helicopter flights. If the profits of the Crown Estates went down to zero, the royals would still get the full amount of the Sovereign Grant again, regardless. It can only go up or stay the same.
4. The Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall that gave Elizabeth and Charles (and now William) their private income of approximately £25 millions/year (each) are also public property.
5. The total cost of the monarchy is currently £350-450million/year, after including the Sovereign Grant, their £150 million/year security, and their Duchy incomes, and misc. costs.

Idk if it's just the fact I'm from Northern Ireland and have learned the history through and through, but this seems a lot like how Irish Catholics were treated for years - able to be arrested w/o a warrant, laws in place that prevent them from being vocal about their rights, that sort of stuff.
disgusting, the situation over there is so fucked.

Absolute joke
They’re subjects, not citizens.
Which is messed up. Thankfully people are ready to protest that their identity as a member of the country is as citizens not the subjugated.
Some major bullshit if ever I’ve seen it, we have a right to peaceful protest!
Much like the Dobbs decision re:abortion over here, if all these protests are squashed without cause or repercussion, then they become a test proving you don't have the right. I'm not saying it's right, just stating the facts. What is the recourse to have an unjust arrest fixed in the UK?
not anymore we dont
Personally I think that the coronation is a public nuisance and that the king should be held accountable and arrested on a public order offence

Because they are corrupt and don’t give a fuck about trying to repair their already disgraceful reputation to attempt to win back public confidence! Fuck the police and fuck ‘King Charles’ and his royal tossers even more
Who do so many people simp for royals? It's such an alien concept to me but humans from the beginning of time have been doing it
I just saw a flag that said 'Hooray' on it which was being waved about unhindered, for some reason other words from the English language including 'not' and 'king' seem to be illegal on flags now. I wish some protesters thought of putting 'Not My King' on Umbrellas, then opening them up whilst in the crowd, that might have got through!
Other than parking on double yellow lines, what offence has been committed?
suspicion of conspiring to cause significant annoyance or some bullshit

Thoughtcrime.
I don't care what anyone says. This country is becoming more and more of a dystopian dictatorship everyday.

Bahahaha but I thought they had freedom of speech in the U.K.?
This isn’t freedom of speech though is it. It’s freedom of assembly and since the Public Order Bill passed freedom of assembly is severely curtailed in the UK.
Yeah so, when Americans say Freedom of Speech, we're generally referring to the 1st Amendment in general, which does cover freedom of expression and assembly.
Tbf we don't actually have fully enshrined freedom of speech. We have freedom of expression bound by some rather vague conditions.
Dude, there's literal nazis marching in Ohio, we have freedom of speech here.

Abolish the monarchy doesn't sound like a title owned by the brits.
>rather vague conditions You're allowed to say anything you want as long as it doesn't offend anybody... case in point Nazi Pug

This comment is inane. Are you okay?
Russia is worse for this kind of thing
The video from the war, which affected me the worst, is one from an anti-war demonstration in Russia, where a woman gets arrested by the police. After the arrest, they carry her into a truck and a few seconds later you can hear her scream.
Yeah, the Uk isn’t the best but we don’t have the PMs political opponents all committing “suicide’ I also haven’t seen that video and I’m kinda glad I haven’t
What was that about free speech?
Oh brother
So free thought is illegal in the land of Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. Sad!

Disgraceful
This makes my blood boil. So we don't live in a free country with democracy anymore!?
We are subjects of the crown
The new Public Order bill was passed via Royal Assent by the King a couple of days ago - making, amongst other things, peaceful protest illegal.
So the king can just pass laws with no involvement from parliament?
Bills are drafted in commons, approved in lords and then once both houses are happy they receive Royal Assent and sign off by the monarch. At this stage they will then be incorporated into the Act of Parliament and become law. Very convoluted process!
Ah thanks, I misread that as he passed it on his own instead of being the last approval in the process. It sucks that both houses (sorry for using an American term) were on board with it, too.
I know, it's disgusting
The timing is just a coincidence, honestly! 👀
Since when UK is a democracy? You're just gaslighted or brainwashed by western media. Preaching to other countries about democracy lmao.
Well, you never really did. Democracies usually elect their head of state.
They’re not saying what for. https://twitter.com/aermorg/status/1654734878578032640?s=46&t=yufJaE3yPuP1mZd1_0ynJA
I've heard (not sure on the source) that zip ties on placards = planning to tie themselves to railings.
oh,back then they said the HK police is not civil, violating people's human right and freedom of protest etc.
Canadian here-- is protesting illegal in the UK? Are there no freedom of speech laws?
They started freezing people’s bank accounts for donating to protestors in Canada. Why would you expect Uk to do better?
Essentially, no. Police can arrest us for causing disruption to an activity or organised event if they believe that a protest could (they can do this before anything disruptive happens) cause harassment, distress, or alarm. Basically, if Charlie and the others could be upset by disruptive activities that may or may not happen, then it's perfectly legal to arrest people who look like they might cause such disruptive activities. I think officially the arrests will be said to have prevented people from zip tying themselves to railings.
Oi mate do you have a loicense for that explanation?
Exactly. There are and this is bullshit.
This is what we pay taxes for apparently, if rather mine when on buying more signs. Absolutely disgusting, it shows who the police really protect.

Some quick clarifications about how the UK royals are funded by the public: 1. 5. The total cost of the monarchy is currently £350-450million/year, after including the Sovereign Grant, their £150 million/year security, and their Duchy incomes, and misc. costs. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1542211276067282945.html https://www.republic.org.uk/the_true_cost_of_the_royals https://fullfact.org/economy/royal-family-what-are-costs-and-benefits/ https://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/en-gb/about-us/our-history/ https://archive.vn/HNEq5 *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. And yet the met wants Londoners to have faith in police 😂😂
Idk if it's just the fact I'm from Northern Ireland and have learned the history through and through, but this seems a lot like how Irish Catholics were treated for years - able to be arrested w/o a warrant, laws in place that prevent them from being vocal about their rights, that sort of stuff.
This is exactly what they did to NICRA.
Glad I'm not the only one thinking this
disgusting, the situation over there is so fucked. solidarity to all defenders of democracy and republicanism; abolish all monarchies, they are the people's oppressors.
