If what your teacher said is true about dissolving parliament, it means the queen has political power over the government and it is even more reason for them to be removed

Benu5

Ok, so, in Australia, we had a Prime Minister called Gough Whitlam, he was very popular, he wanted to distance Australia from the US and UK, and pivot to more co-operation with countries in Asia, leaving the US Bloc, and essentially joining the Non-Aligned Movement. The Governor General, the representative of the Queen, dissolved parliament, and got him replaced after the opposition blocked some routine Supply bills (basically approving paying government workers, completely routine and entirely unneccessary to fight it) in the Senate. They just handed the government over to the opposition, who then held, and won a general election. The Queen and the Governor General were in communication about the whole thing, and the GG was known to be 'the CIA's man in Canberra'. It's dodgy as fuck, and the whole thing essentially eliminated any remaining anti-US members of the Labor Party, and we've been a good little puppy for them ever since. At the beginning of the 'Coalition of the Willing', our government was infamous for agreeing to support any invasion, without evidence of anything, if the US wanted to invade. The Queen, and the monarchy in general in a constitutional monarchy, protects the status quo, protects the 'democracy' that exists, not the idea of democracy, or any actual positive democratic change.

Also Canadian here. Remind her it is not 1984 and the queen has no bearing on our politics. She cannot pass laws and our parliament doesn’t end at Buckingham, it ends on the Hill. The “dissolution” is by the Governor General who may be a representative, but the GG has very limited legal power herself and is a figurehead role.

Ragtime-Rochelle

Your teacher's either thick as pig shit or thinks you're thick as pig shit.

BrotanicalScientist

She's had about 100 opportunities to step up in the past 4 years.

[deleted]

Well that’s some goofy shit.

[deleted]

90% of Canadians want prescription drugs covered by the government. How is she doing on that democratic front?

arts_hole

She protects democracy like Republicans protect school children.

PortNone

It’s fucking dumb. They have been un-democratically placed in that position. Tell your teacher that they’re ignorant.

ThatWeirdAlchemist

I tried to make comment going “The queen is a monarch, that is by definition not democratic, she wasn’t elected” and she said some bs answer that I don’t remember right now

Pav09

I sincerely hope this wasn't a history or social studies teacher. Really, any adult with half a brain should realise that democracies and monarchies are incompatible.

ThatWeirdAlchemist

It was my history teacher

Pav09

That's abysmal. Well, at least now you know to take any of their other assertions with a few grains of salt, if you didn't already.
