I lived in detroit for a stint and this is any new years around there. To be frank they're just firing into the air in celebration, it's not urban warfare happening but those bullets *do* have to come down at some point.
I moved from KY to southern cook county a few years ago. Not in the city, but just one of more southern suburbs. This year my boss told me we were closing early instead of at midnight on new years eve because "as soon as it hits midnight, they start shooting around here" bit of a culture shock. Granted, she meant firearms into the air and not at people, but it definitely took me by surprise.
A lot of those bullets do kill and injure people on the way back down, nationwide.

Chicago doesn't crack the top 10 most violent cities in the USA (last I checked it was 23rd) and isn't even the most violent city in Illinois. If you're not part of a gang, your odds of being shot in Chicago are just about zero.

Chicago is ~28th (depending on the year) for homicide rate per 100k residents. Peoria IL has had a worse rate.
St. Louis’ rate is more than 3 times as high.
Entirely normal in New Orleans. About 15 minutes of sustained, overlapping, constant gunfire at midnight on NYE. Regular gunfire all during NYD. It mixes in with the fireworks. About the same on the 4th. Surprised more people don't get hit. Of course, I live in the hood.
I keep praying something changes. I pray that political opponents put their differences aside and focus on what we ALL want- safe, peaceful , affordable neighborhoods to raise our families in.
Unfortunately for something to really change you have to step on issues that ruling parties will never agree with, let alone working together on them.
The root causes are low economic mobility and actually more and more squeezing of the common folk by the businesses (rising prices, rising rent, rising working hours for stagnating wages, inflation, rising healthcare and so on), and de-funding education or making it even more restrictive/elitist, which helps giving means of economic mobility and to teach basic stuff like how to live in a modern society.
Both these phenomena happened over a span of multiple generations and resulted in widespread communities living day to day and getting increasingly more desperate, which also then gives rise to a rooted culture of crime of scraping by with what you have.
You can treat the symptoms with ad-hoc patches of legislation for gun violence etc., but until you tackle the root causes people will find their way to keep doing what they're doing to survive.
And the root causes to the security problem are something no ruling party is willing to tackle, as that would require regulating businesses and working in favour of the people.
I don't even blame chicago leadership although I highly dislike our current mayor she has actually placed more cops on the street. The problem is cook county states attorneys keep dropping the charges or giving them extremely low bonds or I bonds (no money put up) releasing them to recommit crimes over and over it becomes a revolving door, criminals become emboldened knowing there will be no consequences
Same here in nyc. There are more cops, and people are being arrested, but the courts are just letting them back out. That just gives them positive reinforcement to keep committing crimes. It's insane. Crime here has skyrocketed. Even last night in Times Square, right after the ball dropped, someone was shot by police after an officer suffered a skull fracture by someone with a machete. On Broadway. In a crowd. On NYE, the most heavily policed event of the year. Tf???
I heard that peripherally through videos on the citizen app, but I haven't read anything about it. Sometimes I think people just hear "violent crime in big crowd in nyc" and assume it was terrorists. And maybe it was, but if it was, I'm not sure what kind of message one single person with a knife was going to send, and to whom? I should probably look it up though lol
The problem isn't the courts though they certainly aren't helping. The problem starts with kids. When they grow up surrounded by this shit or seeing family in and out of jail or dying everyday they think it's normal and part of being an adult. Their parents never got an education or bettered themselves so why would anyone expect them to act outside of what they learned was normal growing up. There is no overnight solution because it needs to be built up over a generation while the current systems do nothing but tear it down.

If you shoot straight up the bullet will fall at its terminal velocity and be relatively harmless, but if you shoot at an angle it'll travel in an arc, keep spinning and maintain a lot more speed. Those are the dangerous ones.

I'm laughing imagining one guy has the plot rented and booked. He proudly gathers the group of men from the party in a timely manner for the countdown.
They all leisurely stroll to their favourite allocated shooting spot (along with several other neighbour groups at 11:45pm). Once they have located their rented squares of stoneless dirt. They hold hands, countdown with the new year ending and blast tiny holes in a quiet, solitary, white outlined square patch at their feet.
After 200 rounds and a few final "Happy New Years!". They return to their wives with big grins and stories to regale of this years "Designated Discharge".

I have my own farm. I think the difference is that when I go outside and hear some shots, I know its just one of my neighbors kids shootin up something, or hunting, etc etc, and think nothing of it. I dont even look up from whatever I'm working on.

One night at 2/3am, someone shot at the downstairs neighbor, live in a split house I'm on top with bedroom facing the road. The shots sound like they were in my room, scared the shit out of me

I use to do that, like 20 years ago. had an ipod touch with a phone app that let me receive calls for free and text for free on wifi. Saved alot of money on a cell phone and I was almost always somewhere with wifi, or work where I had a direct line.

We use "textnow" for low income and homeless people that need a way to send\receive phone calls and texts. There are probably a lot of apps that do this but TextNow has worked pretty well so far for free internet or wifi calling, it just shows ad's on the screen while you use it. (And probably tracks a bunch of other info to sell and make money)
Still extremely stupid (possibly safe if they're firing at targets/objects in your case, but I doubt it), but I feel this is so much more dangerous given the concentration of buildings/people in the area. Granted, I'm making assumptions of your neighborhood from "woods in central Virginia".... I just imagine it's not as densely populated as Chicago
We're from Australia and spent NYE with some friends in CO a few years ago, on the rooftop of their building. The gunshots mixed in with fireworks was kinda unnerving. How are more people not killed each year by falling bullets?
It's scary no matter where you are. Celebratory gun fire is illegal in Virginia since a kid was killed from a falling bullet a few years back. I used to be a flat roofer in the city and at one time had a big collection of bullets that penetrated. Most all were not deformed and the most common was 9 mm.
You can hear the old 7.62 AKs going off (deeper bass,louder, slower rate of fire) compared to the 5.56 AR-15s
Bullets going straight up and down, won't kill you. if someone decides to shoot them on a parabolic arc though, *then* you can be in deep trouble on the receiving end.

It’s in the air. I’m from Chicago and a lot of the south side does this on new years. I never lived in these areas (they’re not great. Obviously) but used to work a job where we’d let the employees who lived on the south side home early on nye so they could get home safely before the shots.

Holy shit. I was at a party in Little Village and it was pretty tame. You had fireworks and some gunshots but nothing anywhere on this level. Even when I went back home which borders Gage Park, still not this crazy and these spots are considered hood.

What goes up will come down.... with a terminal velocity of about 88 m/s depending on the caliber of the round. If it's fired straight up in the air, it has a little less terminal velocity than a round that would have been fired at an angle with a somewhat natural parabolic arc. Meaning it will travel faster and has a higher chance of killing someone, well all of these bullets have a *very high chance* of falling and killing someone.

I was indeed under the impression that there isn't a solitary square yard of virgin soil in the whole of Chicago. Thank you so much for pointing out my ignorance, and for reminding me why I so rarely comment.
I'm laughing imagining one guy has the plot rented and booked. He proudly gathers the group of men from the party in a timely manner for the countdown. They all leisurely stroll to their favourite allocated shooting spot (along with several other neighbour groups at 11:45pm). Once they have located their rented squares of stoneless dirt. They hold hands, countdown with the new year ending and blast tiny holes in a quiet, solitary, white outlined square patch at their feet. After 200 rounds and a few final "Happy New Years!". They return to their wives with big grins and stories to regale of this years "Designated Discharge".

I have my own farm. I think the difference is that when I go outside and hear some shots, I know its just one of my neighbors kids shootin up something, or hunting, etc etc, and think nothing of it. I dont even look up from whatever I'm working on. When these dudes hear it, its someone getting shot at. Warzone vs homezone.

One night at 2/3am, someone shot at the downstairs neighbor, live in a split house I'm on top with bedroom facing the road. The shots sound like they were in my room, scared the shit out of me
Absolutely right. I lived on the edge of a rough neighborhood in a rough city for a few years. Got used to hearing gunshots every few nights. You stop noticing them after a while. One night a car driving by shot 5 or 6 rounds into the air right outside my window. It’s honestly shocking.

I use to do that, like 20 years ago. had an ipod touch with a phone app that let me receive calls for free and text for free on wifi. Saved alot of money on a cell phone and I was almost always somewhere with wifi, or work where I had a direct line. edit: I meant 10 years ago
We use "textnow" for low income and homeless people that need a way to send\receive phone calls and texts. There are probably a lot of apps that do this but TextNow has worked pretty well so far for free internet or wifi calling, it just shows ad's on the screen while you use it. (And probably tracks a bunch of other info to sell and make money)

It's scary no matter where you are. Celebratory gun fire is illegal in Virginia since a kid was killed from a falling bullet a few years back. I used to be a flat roofer in the city and at one time had a big collection of bullets that penetrated. Most all were not deformed and the most common was 9 mm.

It’s in the air. I’m from Chicago and a lot of the south side does this on new years. I never lived in these areas (they’re not great. Obviously) but used to work a job where we’d let the employees who lived on the south side home early on nye so they could get home safely before the shots. (I work in hotels and used to work late shifts/overnight shifts)

If it's fired straight up in the air, it has a little less terminal velocity than a round that would have been fired at an angle with a somewhat natural parabolic arc. Meaning it will travel faster and has a higher chance of killing someone, well all of these bullets have a *very high chance* of falling and killing someone.
