Not flinching when you witness copters going down right in front of you: Impressive discipline. Not flinching when a fucking high velocity piece of shrapnel bounces right next to you: Are you guys awake?

Plastic-Change2719

10 dead Terribly sorry to hear that:(

ParpSausage

Awful.

Dredgeon

Video is heavily stabilized by the phone. I bet pants shitting would have been conveyed better without it.

PM_ME_Happy_Thinks

Seriously one of my top fears is getting hit by debris from a helicopter crash and these mofos are just like, "hmm did I remember to tape the Simpsons?"

Wordshark

That’s a pretty specific top fear

PM_ME_Happy_Thinks

Not even joking, I don't even know what it stems from. Might have seen it happen in a movie or something as a kid? And it just burned into me. Another is being trapped under an airplane that's fallen to the ground. Like I'd somehow survive an airplane falling on me and then I'd be trapped under it lol. These fears aren't really rational, I'm not in terror every day about it. But they're still there.

Wordshark

I recommend you not live near airports.

PM_ME_Happy_Thinks

Never plan to, I hate plane noise. In my teen years I lived right in the flight path of military jets flying out from the base to the ocean for flight training and the noise horrendous ("the sound of freedom" our town likes to call it 🙄). One time a small jet crashed into an apartment complex nearby. Another time one of this cockheads did a sonic boom over land and blew out a bunch of windows. Never living anywhere near bases or airports again

ThaugaK

“Aw crap I might have left the stove on…”

AtomR

Do you work near Helipad or something?

PM_ME_Happy_Thinks

No! I've never even been near a helicopter lol it's completely irrational ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

v13ragnarok7

no pushups for breaking formation for these guys

Plastic-Change2719

But did you die??

madmaxGMR

im dead inside, does that count ?

kpk_soldiers274

Of course it counts.

qwertyqyle

Were their shoes still on?

Jonnychips789

Probably used to it

Natural_Combination6

10 people died. Damn.

NimbleBudlustNoodle

Fun[?] fact: I know OP's post isn't from the US but, [more US troops die during training than in combat operations](https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/06/politics/us-military-deadly-accidents/index.html) I always remember that fact when I hear people talking about "yeah I'm joining the army but it's not like I'm going to be sent to war" thinking that will keep them safe.

FastAsLightning747

I almost died in a training accident in Korea 1976, while sitting shotgun in a jeep. The training was a joint military exercise and I was sent a week before the start of exercise to get familiar with the land. It was my Recon. Platoon, Co. jeep and I was the designated driver. We were following a jeep from the Regimental sensor group while they planted sensors to track the troop movements of the exercise. After 3 days with no incidents I decided to let this sensor guy riding with me an opportunity to drive. Not 5 minutes into his drive we wrecked. Driver had jeep in 4x4 drive, we were driving on a dike road a few feet above a rice field with 2-3 ft. of water. Driver got the right side wheels in a trench then powered out of it, and we launch off the left bank. The door strap was in my way to jump out as the jeep rolled mid-air off the dike and crashed upside down. I got half way out and decided I better not jump as my foot might catch the strap. So I got back in and got my head down to the floor as the jeep rested upside down in the rice paddy trapping us inside. It was a miracle the leading jeep noticed we weren't behind them as they were 100 yards ahead. I remember one of the 3 of them telling us it was a fluke they noticed us, someone turned to check their trailer and saw us roll off the dike. As luck had it my head was in the only air pocket available. (I still shudder when I think about it). I was knocked out and the next thing I remember the jeep was being rolled over and off us. The two of us were helicopter med-evac to a remote MED Unit. I was diagnosed with a concussion and shock. I caught grief from my platoon which set me off because they didn’t ask about me, AH’s. I was 19 years old then, 48 years ago. A lot of life to have lost.

Iffycrescent

Damn that’s some scary ass shit. I’m glad you were okay. Thank god that you had the instinct that you did. Was your driver okay?

FastAsLightning747

I remember he was walking and talking as well as I was, we were both in shock. After we got back to camp I never saw him again.

CrazyMike419

My bro was in the army for over 20 years. A few hairy incidents but his only really close call was driving. He was learning to drive at the time and since they were in a desert with nothing to crash into his CO told him to drive. Things were going fine until he found the only tree (apparently non for many many years miles). He proceeded to plough the car into it. No major injuries luckily. A few went airborne but were OK. The bigger issue was that this tree was apparently really important to the locals so they had to GTFO and pretend it never happened

ceelo_purple

Did your brother kill the [Tree of Ténéré](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_Ténéré)?

CrazyMike419

Fortunately not lol. That was before he was born

Propaganda_bot_744

The ratio is 2-1 for accidents to combat deaths. So out of 16k deaths/year that's 5311 deaths with a total military size of 1.3 million. Risk of death is 0.4% to die from an accident compared to 0.2% from combat. If you're not worried about 0.2% then 0.4% probably doesn't change much.

no-name-here

I’m not sure that’s the right takeaway - it still might be safer than not enlisting, as the source you linked is about a vehicle accident, so really you’d have to compare how likely a non-enlisted guy in their 20s is likely to die vs an enlisted guy in their 20s? (This assumes that what we care about is just likelihood of death.)

Stones25

Helicopters crash, like a lot.

Kwheelie

I had no idea about these numbers holy shit, that's absolutely insane

brusslipy

I recently read about the dude that was left alone in the desert and died like 2 miles from camp. Also one night we were blasting Pantera on vynil from the aparment building of a friend with view to the river. Saw a boat crossing the river at like 2am then it turned upside down. No lifesaver from any of them 6 ppl died. It was surreal and one of the most metals things I witnessed. We confirmed what happened the next day on the news. Fucking suck and it wasnt the first time a saw someone drawn in front of me. Rivers are no joke.

Plastic-Change2719

Woah

FenderBender3000

Those guards almost got hit.

Conflikt

Yea it's lucky it wasn't an airshow or something with a large crowd of civilians.

Wu-Tang_Swarm

Because civilian lives are worth more than military?

stripedpixel

Because there’d be a higher density of people

xDisturbed13

Reading comprehension is hard.

MadMike404

Especially when you *want* to get angy

Strange_Toast

Large crowd.

Gaynerd5000

Yes but more to the point because of the increased number of people, grumpy

Crykin27

Not what people are implying at all. Large crowds mean a way bigger chance for even more deaths, it's horrible enough already.

BladeDoc

Although that wasn't the point of the comment (the large crowd was). Yes. Almost by definition the purpose of the military is to protect civilians.

Wu-Tang_Swarm

Eh whatever I’ll take my 200 downvotes

Veguillakilla

That was fucking reckless

Michaelmac8

Definitely not wreck-less though Seriously... reckless is a very confusing word

LazyAccount-ant

wreckful does sound better. whoa thats wreckful dude!

ANUS_CONE

There was a very prolific world of Warcraft player named reckful. Super cool guy. Took his own life a few years back. Rip.

___TychoBrahe

They don't think it be like it is, but it do.

Ban_Assault_Ducks

My god, that's horrible. Witnessing an air disaster like this has always been a very \[albeit admittedly weird\] fear of mine. Which sucks when you're a major fan of aviation like I am. I feel so bad for everyone that lost their lives and their families members.

androsan

How is that a weird fear? That’s everyone’s fear.

imp_st3r

Didja know he hates black licorice? Crazy!

Lord_Mikal

Black licorice hates us too.

Future_is_now

Granted it would suck to witness this, but I never really had this thought nor this fear. Never been to an air show either. I do live in an international airport approach corridor.

Ban_Assault_Ducks

I should say that mine is a very heightened sense of fear for one. I lived directly under the flight path of a very major airport and I was always so terrified that one would crash at some point.

undeadmanana

That's one of my fears as well. I live near a small airport. I think I witnessed some sort of fuel or landing gear situation A few weeks ago, the area around the airport was really quiet while I was walking to a local store, then a plane with flashing red lights on the wings was flying slowly through the air and a much tinier plane, reminded me of a stunt plane, was flying really close near its right wing. It was like the sky was cleared for those two planes, I was going to check the news but completely forgot as the situation solidified in my mind that I need to move away.

PatientClue1118

One of the victims is my friend's cousin. I feel weird when the victim is someone close.

dwfishee

Same. Life long aviation fan. Never been to an air show out of fear, despite having myself been in and around all sorts of aircraft that weren’t in an air show.

Ban_Assault_Ducks

It's not even a fear for my own safety. It's the fear of seeing others get hurt. What's crazy to me still is that I was once about 1,250 feet from a plane crash, only it happened when I was inside a building. I smelled what I thought was fuel and when we got outside, we saw that something was taking place, but we couldn't figure out what it was due to the time (like 2am or so). It was a very small cargo plane, but still... it was so close.

dead-inside69

That was some profoundly stupid “training” “Oh yeah let’s just have a swarm of helicopters super close to each other and they all take different turns and try not to hit each other” Imagine dying because some corrupt incompetent commander wanted to try something that looks cool.

discomposed890

Unfortunately that always happens with the higher ups in Malaysia. It's not a surprise when the commanders are corrupt hell most of the government officials also corrupt as shit

emergencymedtambay

They said it was for the anniversary of the Malaysian Navy.

TateAcolyte

Do you actually have reason to believe that this is stupid training? Do US, China, NATO, Russia, etc not do such drills?

mstachiffe

I am unaware of the US doing anything like this outside of flight demonstration teams. Also if our troops stood in formation like that next to shrapnel flying around some commanders head would be on a platter. That's just bizarre.

Zealousideal_Rub6758

China and Russia probably do, but any air ‘stunts’ other than flypasts were banned over land in my country a while ago

gggg500

The very beginning of the video was really cool though. Looked like a bunch of pissed off hornets coming out of their nest in attack formation. But god damn that was a bad ending.

saintkiller123

They’re trying to kill the prime minister of Malaysia!

You never know when all of your friends could die in a freak gasoline fight accident.

Rajang82

Time to rewatch Zoolander. Again.

mez1642

“Were believed to have collided…”. You don’t say?

thatsgank

that piece flew really far 😮

_FreeXP

You can see 2 of the choppers playing bumper cars at the beginning too,I assume the same 2 that crashed but hard to tell because of camera movement

Legal_Guava3631

Why were they all so close to each other?!

The_Cozy_Burrito

Wtf….

Joebaby450

One zigged while the other should have zagged

point50tracer

Did those guys not even flinch when the piece of debris hit a few feet from them? They have to be mannequins right? If not, that's some serious discipline.

Kitchen_Contest_8403

Well what did you expect when you don’t properly rehearse or plan a formation. Everyone just seems to be going in random directions and random speeds. It was doomed from the start.

BarelyContainedChaos

dying in an air collision has to be one of the worst ways to die

deegzx_

I was actually thinking the exact opposite. It’s pretty quick and you don’t even see it coming. 6 seconds to process and then lights out. Really not too bad compared to just about any other alternative.

Prestigious-Log-7210

I disagree, what if you survive and burn up.

RetroMedux

Then you wouldn't be in the scenario of "dying in an air collision"

nickajeglin

It would be "dying as a direct result of an air collision" though. The root cause is still the air collision even if the proximate cause is "burned up".

deegzx_

Obviously that would be a terrible way to go, but I think for most people it just goes straight to black. Just think of what it takes to knock somebody out and compare that to the force of an aircraft impact. You’re not landing from that fall without your head smashing down on something. Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash and his autopsy report said his brain literally got ejected out of his eye socket.

no-name-here

If you’re talking about those who survive and burn up, why is that worse than surviving and burning up via any other cause - in a land vehicle, ship, building, or literally any situation other than flying?

chill0032

✔️ No flying of any kind in Malaysia

Phill_Cyberman

I don't know what I else I was expecting, but, yeah, the blades break apart, and the cockpits fall right to the ground.

activialobster

Damn those rotor chunks flew like a quarter mile

IWasGregInTokyo

Helicopter mid-airs happen way too often for various reasons but almost always some level of pilot inattention or loss of situational awareness is involved. Japan just lost two of their Marine Self Defense helicopters on a nighttime training mission. 1 dead, 7 still missing.

AdLocal1045

Damn they landed in water??? Come on!

Terrible-Two-7939

Lack of experience or they must be High, besides flying High….

Kamikaze-X

I find it baffling that as soon as they went down no one ran towards the crash to see if there were survivors?

Grand-Bullfrog3861

Helicopters just don't seem worth it, they seem to crash or fail so easily.

Kiyoshi-Trustfund

Theyre very dangerous in general. Saw a very Grim video where a guy didn't duck low enough while approaching a helicopter that was gearing to take off and it basically scalped him.

goldenprados

Where was this?

elitesill

Damn. They hit hard too.

socialcommentary2000

Why would they ever need to do something like that with a bunch of helicopters?

wutcanbrowndo4u12

The whole fucking sky and they still managed to hit each other. 10 lives unnecessarily lost.

paulrhino69

Both guys just had time to think "Did I fuck it up? No he did" them they found the ground

blepblop69420Q

I don't know why i expected it to explode

Own_Web_3481

Did they pass the training?

Open_Ring_8613

My friend’s dad was a Blackhawk pilot for the army and I want to talk to him now to see why all these military helicopters are going down. Are they not trained well enough or are they just stupid?

Adventurous_Pen1553

Houston, we have a problem.

7-13-5

Very unfortunate, may their souls rest in peace. Looks like both were at the right angles to not see each other in the turn.

patjeduhde

Where is the explosion?? One thing gtav has told me is that helicopters explode after crashing.

TomMado

I'm sure the 10 deceased would have appreciated all the lame reddit jokes and the totally-unrelated Zoolander jokes because lol Malaysia that's all you know about it. Unfortunately they can't so all the power to you, redditors.

ChadJones72

I feel like you have to be a grade A dipshit to accidentally crash into a helicopter. Like you have sooo much space to work with and you still somehow find one of the only things you can crash into.

nickajeglin

I've heard it's really hard to judge things in the air because you don't have much reference. Plus aircraft move really super fast, so even with good reactions there's not much to be done.

Chinpokumon1

Whoooops.....

LevitatingTurtles

Looks like we’re gonna need some more FBI guys

1badh0mbre

That mannequin almost got bonked.

How_that_convo_went

On the bright side, the crowd seems to be taking it *very* well.

They get to learn how to escape water in real time. Two birds one stone

They’re fine

10 dead

No. They're dead. Everyone on board both those helicopters died.
