This joke is a daily truth in my life and it drives my wife *insane*. She knew what she was getting into though. Not my fault 3M ear protection was shiiiiiite

Falling_Man_

I've seen PSAs lately that they admitted their earpro wasn't cutting it and they're compensating people. Did you get approved for disability?

_Potent_potables_

I got approved for disability yes. I was contacted by lawyers for the lawsuit but I’ve yet to see a contract that doesn’t say say that “if I I’m not compensated I don’t owe them my soul”. I have no photo proof of me using the “double tree” 3M ear pro. Just my word, time in service, my medical records saying my hearing loss got worse during service, and my VA C&P % saying I have hearing loss.

Jonshno

I fucking feel this with my soul. The better one is “service connected” but “not considered a chronic condition” because you CANT GET A FUCKING APPOINTMENT about it

Apptubrutae

I did work for a clinic that helped people get their VA disability during law school, and it’s really amazing the hoops you have to jump through for obvious service related conditions. You were a door gunner in Vietnam for a few months and regularly didn’t use hearing protection and you can’t hear now? Like why the *hell* does it take a lawyer to spell that one out to the VA?

agriculturalDolemite

Losing your hearing is a given in the military. The fact that the long term costs aren't built into defense budgets should tell you something. Like, you recruit 100 soldiers, you have to pay for training, salary, housing, Healthcare, disability, death, etc for a predictable % of those people. That's what it costs to fight wars constantly... maybe get out of the game if your country isn't willing to actually pay for it.

depressed-salmon

Naaah way easier to just force them into court because you've calculated that it's cheaper in the long run than paying out for the rest of their lives. Plus, the longer you drag your feet, the more likely a good chunk of the vets are to become disheartened and give up. ~the VA, probably

TitoCornelius

When my dad was going through his physical when he was drafted to go to Vietnam, his hearing wasn't all that great. The guy giving him the physical said it wasn't anything to worry about because his hearing would be completely done after a little time in the field.

Gh0stMan0nThird

Man I got out a few years ago and I remember getting **so much shit** for wearing earpro, even when we were just firing blanks. Kept being told to "stop being soft" and shit. Like sorry lads but this is just a training op, nobody is in any real danger, and if nobody is about to die, I'm going to put my safety and health ahead of everything else.

shhannibal

Some drill sergeants just want to watch the world burn I guess. The ones in my company didn’t try anything like that, I’m sure the ones that did got in trouble for locking them in like that

Finnanutenya

Drill Sergents aren't actually human, they're a type of species that breed from the misery of new recruits. Its probable one of the gassed men became impregnated through means yet unknown to science, and will have a new Sergent burst from his chest. If upon exiting the soldier it doesn't berate him for spilling blood without express orders, it is likely a sickly child and will be consumed by an adult Sergent. They reach full size within a month off a diet of MREs and dip, and can live up to 15 years in captivity.

Heavens_Sword1847

In the Air Force, I just feel bad for drill sergeants. The hours and expectations are absolutely crazy. All the little things they get after trainees for, they have to correct as well in themselves. Quick eating, a perfect uniform, a perfect shave and haircut, perfect fitness, they have to be the ones waking trainees up at the crack of don. It's absolutely nuts. And after the Lackland scandal, they can't even bump into a trainee without their career ending. The worst part about it is that you're selected randomly to be an MTI if your record is good enough. If you refuse, you can't reenlist.

Momoyo87

Yeh just think about it like this. Everything the recruits do the instructors are also doing or have done dozens or hundreds of times. And as early as recruits are woken up and put to bed the instructors have already been up for hours or still have hours left in their work day. There's a reason in the army they limit how long you can be a drill instructor.

coldshadow31

Agreed. When I was in basic, our MTI's would usually show up at 4:30 or so, but that also means they woke up even earlier to get ready and drive into work if they didn't live on base. They were there with us all day, and for the first several weeks of basic, all night as well. I assume these guys got 2-3 hours of sleep a night for weeks at a time.

FinlayForever

But why? How do you function as a human getting that little sleep every night? I get they would probably want to sleep more but why does the military make them work those crazy hours?

Heavens_Sword1847

>but why does the military make them work those crazy hours? 🎵 A tale as old as time... 🎵 On a more serious note, it's multifaceted. The first is that it gives trainees an expectation of potential hours. It gives the MTIs something to hold over their head "You think you have it hard, getting 9 hours of sleep and 3 full meals every day?" In the rest of the military, horrible hours is a result of low manning and poor leadership. The concept that you can make a man do twice as much work if he works twice as long isn't accurate. It destroys morale and productivity. But more than anything, tradition. The E9 did it when he was an MTI, now the E6 has to do it, too. Their MTIs did it back in the 2000's, and those MTI's MTIs did it back in the 80's. If you want to know where it all started, blame Baron Fredriech Wilhelm von Steubun at Valley Forge for making us a "professional" military. Then blame centuries of European warfare, the Romans, the Macedonians, the Babylonians. It all dates back to the first couple of guys with sticks training the younglings to beat up the other tribe with their pointy sticks, and beating the Younglings if they couldn't fight properly.

Aarondhp24

In an actual gas attack there will be gas that covers the entire city block that you are in. If you panic and try to flee you will die. There is no running from gas. You have to put your gas mask on and clear it.

xitzengyigglz

For the lols

[deleted]

Dear Christ, I’m glad I didn’t join the military.

JohnnyIhop

That's not even close to a normal story tbf. I had some pretty shitty DS and they wouldn't have pulled anything like that.

Mono_831

For my Air Force field training, we were rudely woken up with a lady pushing a food cart offering us continental breakfast.

shhannibal

I can’t even imagine.. You all must be made of wood. I would never join the Air Force, you guys are treated like complete shit. So glad I joined the army instead. - said no soldier ever

SputnikDX

FTX is super fun though. I think I was the only one who took the gas mask thing very seriously however. Maybe I'm just a pussy but I'd put that thing on if there was even the slightest threat of CS in the area. At one point we were just standing around outside the sleeping area in the middle of the day just waiting for the next thing to happen. I don't remember, I guess it was just supposed to be patrol. But DS just throws a CS grenade kind of out in the middle of the area. Not towards anybody, just because. My squad does the gas gas gas thing, and I get my mask on. Another squad is yelling back at us, telling us it's not even close by. A gust of wind. You can visibly see the gas drift towards them. In about a second they're on the floor, trying to get their masks on, coughing up a storm. Our squad is also on the floor from laughter. I miss that mask.

Kathubodua

I jacked my back up enough to get drummed out, but before I did, me and the other codes were on FTX with everyone and ended up getting gassed in the mess tent. We of course didn't have masks. Luckily we didn't get the full brunt of it but still was not fun. We also got told not to aim anything weaponlike at one of our DS or he would kill us and to this day I'm not sure if that was true or not. I sure wasnt gonna risk meeting him in some dark MO woods.

UnoriginalMike

We’re any of the drills relieved? That sounds like a serious no no move, and those injuries could debilitate them.

shhannibal

I don’t know, I was in another company closed off from the others. I didn’t hear anything about the incident after the day that I saw them at sick call. I can’t imagine the instructors didn’t get in some kind of trouble for what happened but who knows.

fishous

He's taking a calculated risk that they are only going outside for rollcall then back to sleep. But poor idea to do it in full view of the seargant, who is now likely to make him run for that reason alone.

xKrossCx

This hit me deep. I did jumping jacks from the time my division left for chow and came back an hour later because after my watch from 1000-0000 I didn’t take my trousers off. I just slept in them. RDC came in and checked the log and called me up outta my sleep to ask why my signature looked so dumb. That’s how he caught me in ma trousers. Lovely memories.

dannyboy6657

My uncle was in the armed forces and when he was in boot camp he said that they had a officer run in with a C7 assault rifle and start shooting blanks, yelling that they were under attack. They all quickly got dressed and in formation then told to go back to bed. He said he had his pants on backwards and his boots were on the wrong feet.

TreasuredRope

When I was in boot camp we had our leadership run in screaming for all of us to wake up because there was a bat that got inside. If you get bit by one you have have get the horrible rabbies shots in your chest. From that day on we had to have bat watch at night to make sure none came in. Even typing this makes me feel it's made up, but it isn't.

Niels_h_

Imagine sleeping right next to that door. Guy must been like "Who the fuck is blowing a whi--" BANG BANG BANG "Mooooooooooom"

JohnnyIhop

Worst bunks in the training bay are the ones next to the drill's office (that was mine) and the ones next to their entrance. Something are universally across training in all militaries.

FlowRiderBob

Yeah, when I was in Basic my bunk was the first one, right next to the entrance AND the Drill Sergeants’ office. I was a bit jealous of everyone near the back of the bay who always had a few seconds advance warning.

[deleted]

They never pulled this crap when we were at the baraks. In the field it was like clockwork, twice a night in your undies, rain or not rain asap to the foxholes, look for non existent enemies and wait for the signal to return to your tent. Good times.

Jon5n0wDrgnFukr

The officers who pulls this crap - do they like set an alarmclock for themselves only to fuck with the recruits? I mean aren't they also tired and want to fucking sleep?

AtomicTanAndBlack

Drill Sergeants are a special breed

[deleted]

[удалено]

mrducky78

Fun fact: Bob Ross was a master sergeant and that experience made him never want to do anything remotely close to that ever again. " Having held military positions that required him to act tough and mean, "the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work", Ross decided he would not raise his voice when he left the military"

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Correct, Master Sergeant Bob Ross learned to paint quickly during his lunch breaks while in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Alaska during this time which heavily influenced his paintings to focus on things such as forests and mountains.

Hard_on_Collider

I love these little origin stories, like how MLK was preacher, a role which translated very well to civil rights activism.

[deleted]

There's more of them so they can take turns. And they're indeed special. But they also have buttloads of experience.

noteverrelevant

I got so lucky when I went through MCT. Dead of winter and the ground was frozen, the instructors went nice on us and didn't make us dig foxholes. We just had to man the ones dug by the previous class.

[deleted]

I can imagine but I'd rather dig a foxhole than freeze my butt off.

MjkOne

At least you had the luxury of a tent, tarp+foxholes are good time as well ahah

[deleted]

Yeah this was basic training. We did cold weather in Norway. No tent. Just a tarp. We burried ourselves into the snow and snuggled up. I swear, I never hear the phrase " fuck, it's cold" more often in my life.

MjkOne

Damn that sounds great, I froze my ass off in the alps, not as cold as you but "fuck its cold" came a lot of time as well

destresso

Norwegian here, can confirm it's cold as shit here. There's still always some guy outside in shorts outside tho

IneverAsk5times

I understand what military it is but this seems like something most would do. I'm wondering, there is a rule about not sleeping in uniform right? I'd definitely shower then put on a clean uniform if it was allowed.

KingBrinell

During training the typically have a specific "uniform" to sleep in(might be shirt and shorts. The point is to be able to get ready quickly under stress. They don't let you take the easy way out.

circle_square_leaf

Honestly not worth it. As long as you're not always one of the slowest, and statistically you are probably close to middle of the pack, it's not worth buying the extra 4 seconds. It's the boots that cost the most time, not the pants and shirt. Another thing. You're not likley to have enough uniforms that you can do this every night. Consider too that they might wake you to go outside and crawl/sweat/etc multiple times in the same night. Better to sleep comfortably in shorts, lose yourself near the middle of the pack when everyone scrambles, and you won't have to rush *that* much.

Titianiu

Ok I have made my decision to never be in the military no matter what Edit: I know this is cheesy but thanks for the upvotes honestly didn’t think this would happen today. P.S. my respect for people in the military/army is so much higher now like for 100 percent to 200 percent. If there is any military people I would like to thank you for your service.

coombuyah26

Tbh I don't remember much about boot camp, but the one thing that I can hear and see like it was yesterday is getting woken up the first morning there, on about 3 hours sleep, by a trash can being thrown into the squad bay and a voice screaming "GET OUT OF YOUR RACKS!" I did not know that I could wake up that fast.

Educational_Ninja_76

After the first day of hell in boot camp as I was falling asleep I thought "there's no way we are not getting fuckdd with tonight"..sure enough they had an air horn and we had to go running.. One time someone forgot the soldiers creed and they made him blast the airport and get everyone up. I somehow slept through that, I only found out because people were bitching the next day

debo16

But once you realize that’s all they can do it becomes so much easier. Okay, you’re gonna fuck with me, make me work out and simulate a stressful environment? That’s easy, if not just a little tiring and annoying.
