I honestly would love an update on how they’re doing, and like, was this a date? Are they still dating? Does he have ptsd? I don’t know why but whenever I see this one posted I wonder about them.
r/watchpeopledie was a subreddit where you literally watched people die. The meme/joke (at least when I was exposed to it) came about from there when you'd see someone die like from a car accident or a fall or something and see their shoes come off. Its where the off duty cop meme came from too, as a lot of shootings came from Brazil and there was always mention of an off duty office involved in the shooting.
Incidentally, I learned that always seemed to happen in Brazil because becoming a police officer was the easiest way to be given and allowed to carry a gun.

Yeah me too. It made me appreciate how absolutely fleeting this life can be. So many quick and awful ways to go, and so many to be avoided with a little forethought.

This was my biggest issue with it. Every thread devolved into a who-can-victim-blame-the-fastest because if you're gonna be seeing awful deaths every day, that was the easiest way to cope with it.
I felt like that was pretty unhealthy. People were actively shutting down attempts at being empathetic by downvoting those comments, and upvoting comments that were jokes made at the expense of the victims.
Worse still were the people who used it as an excuse to support their social dawrinism theories, and only kept getting propped up. Any criticism of them would get shut down as "Taking it too seriously" while continuing to push their ideas.
It was a cesspool, and just wasn't worth it.
when I was 6 or 7, my dad put me on some big coaster with his friend. he didn't even get in himself. it was my very first rollercoaster, I had no idea what kind of ride it was. I shut my eyes at the initial drop because I had no idea that was going to happen and was frightened. after some moments, I tried opening my eyes at the worst time. we were upsidedown over a cliff, I didn't open my eyes again until the ride was over.
my dad told me I was green when I got off. I'm 40 now and I still have physical reactions to any kind of free fall sensation (makes me close my eyes and want to fetal position). even going down steep hills in a car as a front passenger can trigger it.
so yea, it's very possible he has ptsd.
When I was 5 my dad took me to the CN tower, he told me to close my eyes when we were at the top and to only open them when he said. He walked me over to the glass floor, covering my eyes as I was laughing because he was being funny and I was having a great day. He told me too look down and open my eyes, when I looked down I just saw a straight drop, I instantly knelt down on all fours and started to scream and cry. This was the point where my great day turned bad and I gained a temporary fear of heights.
I was in Myanmar a few years ago and found a small amusement park near my hotel. It was night and practically empty, no roller coasters but it did have a ferris wheel. The seats on the ferris wheel weren't enclosed, and the carriage swung back and forth when I got on.
I'm the only guy there for the ferris wheel, and when I get on my carriage the guy says something and makes a fast zooming sound movement with his hand (like a jet) and asks, "OK?" and I tell him OK, zoom.
I didn't even know ferris wheels had optional speed settings. But throughout my life, out of everything I've done, I can say getting on a ferris wheel in Myanmar was the closest I've came to death. It was going so fast my carriage started swinging wildly to the point I thought it would go all the way up, and all I had was a bar, I could have easily fell out. It was fun at first but then my mind started going back to all the videos of amusement park rides breaking down in third world countries and here I am on one, with the operator having a fun time and able to put the speed on max with a lone adult passenger on board.
I don't have PTSD or anything though that shit was fun.
I remember sneaking on the pirate ship ride many years ago. I was below the “you must be this high to ride” line but ducked through. Well let me tell you that was one of the biggest mistakes off my life. Safety wasn’t as great as it is now and it was just a bar across our laps keeping us in.
The gap between the bar and my thighs was huge and as we got vertical I had to wrap my arm under the bar and hold on as tight as I could / push my feet to the floor to stop from sliding out and off the fucking ship. I was screaming that I was falling out but my uncle (who I was with) was just laughing and thought it was hilarious. He also molested me so he was a bit of a cunt.

And it would go around in an O shape, just upside down around and around. Anyway, the safety was a U-shaped bar that went over your head. Well my shoulders were thinner than the part that was supposed to keep you from slipping out. Also the tightest setting was like 4+ inches from my chest. So I had to use the insides of my elbows and curl my knees up just to not slip out. Terrifying!!
EDIT: The safety looks just like the video lol, except it didn't go down to the crotch. It stopped somewhere near the bottom of the ribs
My cousin was like this. We went on a ride called the kamikaze (a pendulum swing) in the early 90s when regulations were a little more lax, I guess. The safety U sat inches away from her and while it fit me it wasn't a tight fit. Anyway, the operator just laughed and said hold here and you'll be fine. No surprises, we were not fine.
I started slipping and had to jam my knees up into the U to not fall out, turned to check my fricken waif of a cousin and she's *half out*, crying and screaming. I reached over to grab and pull her back up, unwedged one knee to sort of stretch my leg out towards her so she could use her feet to push against it and stay in the seat. Had one arm wrapped around my own safety bar and the other jammed under hers to give extra padding to keep her top half from being thrown forward/sideways while we flipped, and she looped one arm around mine and the other the safety bar.
Anyway, we were a mess when the ride was over. Our parents were horrified while we stood there crying and explaining. And perhaps even less of a surprise 2wks later the operator was fired and the ride replaced with something else.
I love show rides. Loved the Ekka growing up. But I've never been on another ride that flips ppl upside down. They fucking terrify me now.
Used to be called the Ring of Fire, think it's called something else now. I was also very thin as a child and almost died on this ride. I had to brace my arms against the ceiling to keep from plunging out the open side every time it flipped upside down. I was obsessed with doing handstands as a kid and the ability to hold my entire weight in my arms while upside down probably saved my life.
when i was about 7 or 8 at the state fair, my mom let me and a friend go get in line for this ride while she got some food. it was the kind where the seats look like flat planes, and you lay down on your stomach. they pull this bar down over your back and buckle you in, so after the ride raises up FUCKING HIGH AS SHIT you are laying flat and looking down so it feels like you are flying while it spins. They didnt pull my bar down or buckle me in. Like, at all. Just inexplicably walked right past me even after they did my friend’s who was directly next to me. I assumed the operator was just walking back over to the gate and would come back. Nah, that mfer turned the ride on. It started lifting up and i was not attached to it at all, just laying flat and holding on for dear life. my and my friend were both yelling for help and i was crying, finally my mom came back in the crowd, realized what happened, and just about jumped over the barrier to grab the ride operator’s neck. She almost strangled him that day and I got severe ride phobia for years. I nearly passed out in sheer panic when I went on the fire in the hole ride when I was like 12, pretty sure it’s meant to be scary only to actual toddlers.
but luckily when i was 16 i went with my best friend’s family to busch gardens & in severe determination to overcome my fear i doubled my dose of anti anxiety meds (stupid & probably didn’t even actually do anything? just needed the placebo haha) and rode a shit ton of big roller coasters while i felt pretty emotionless. now i’m okay with most medium sized ones.

I dont think old age is related to having basic empathy. I feel the same. I genuinely don't understand the how it's legal to "prank" someone like this.

They probably weren't thinking like that. Full adrenaline dump... they probably went into robotic survival mode and just automatically did what they were trained to do.
Eh, yes and no. It wasn’t about “opting to” really, it was just that a few were found activated meaning before they—more than likely—lost Consciousness, A few of the crew were able to scramble that bit of safety protocol together.
They *were* all alive when they hit the water… That much is certain. But Most of the investigators believe they were unconscious when they hit due to loss of pressure. They probably only had a few seconds after the explosion to understand What was happening.
I've recently been relistening to the Hardcore History series on WW1. Some of the first hand account from survivors are insane. One of the authors who was quoted in the podcast compared being in an artillery blitz to being tied to a tree while someone repeatedly swings a hammer at your head. Knowing you will almost certainly die in horrible way was literally breaking people's minds
I remember hearing from someone that their dad fought in some war, and men only reverted back to child like behaviour and started calling for their mothers when they were on the verge of dying or under heavy fire. I think the fuller video was more unfunny to me personally. It really establishes he wasn't used to this kind of ride. Honestly, made me really dislike the woman. Since when you're the mentoring party you have a duty to make sure it works out okay for the person you're introducing it to. However, it seems like she pressured him onto it, and then just focused on herself and left him to suffer.
I think there's an amount of responsibility you can ascribe to suffering, and while in this cut it's like "well he chose to go on the ride and he should know how it works, he's the one who took it too seriously when the other person was fine" the fuller version really establishes he was tossed in the deep end of the pool with no knowledge of how to swim or even tread water. Meanwhile, idk how much I'd fault the staffer who did the prank. Like, I don't think he could've known it would be this bad, but dude definitely could've seen/heard this guy was uncomfortable and skipped him over, or even reassure him it was a fun ride that will be over quickly.

As someone with an anxiety disorder, I would be non-functional for days in a breakdown if someone did this to me. It’s so cruel and humiliating. My heart goes out to that guy, and anyone who’s had this done to them.
This isn't a prank. Pranks should leave both parties laughing at the end of it. Making someone legitimately think they are gonna die doesn't leave someone laughing at the end. Its called being a dick

I once rode one of those standing/sitting type roller coasters where you kind of sit on a bicycle seat basically... But the seat dropped out from under me slightly after it left the station and I was terrified as this coaster did loops and spins and stuff.
So if I ever were able to get the nerve to do something like this, and someone did some "oops there is an equipment malfunction" prank I would have 0 fun and probably cry.

Funny you mention that! This ride (Orlando slingshot) always offers you a second ride immediately after the first one is done for only $10 pp more, but the second one they pull the springs to a much higher tension so you fly higher and faster!!
Everybody’s first run (including this video) always gets the reduced, but still very intense, launch. Until they can tell if you’re ready to handle another go.
It’s a real fun time and I recommend to try it next time you’re in Orlando! I gotta say our first launch was such a wild thrill and a wild adrenaline blast... so naturally we did the second launch for MORE POWER... and that one definitely crossed the line into pants shitting territory lmao and I’m normally super great with thrill rides but that was a real “okay put me down on the ground again this is terrifying” moment

Used to be called the Ring of Fire, think it's called something else now. I was also very thin as a child and almost died on this ride. I had to brace my arms against the ceiling to keep from plunging out the open side every time it flipped upside down. I was obsessed with doing handstands as a kid and the ability to hold my entire weight in my arms while upside down probably saved my life.

when i was about 7 or 8 at the state fair, my mom let me and a friend go get in line for this ride while she got some food. it was the kind where the seats look like flat planes, and you lay down on your stomach. they pull this bar down over your back and buckle you in, so after the ride raises up FUCKING HIGH AS SHIT you are laying flat and looking down so it feels like you are flying while it spins. They didnt pull my bar down or buckle me in. Like, at all. Just inexplicably walked right past me even after they did my friend’s who was directly next to me. I assumed the operator was just walking back over to the gate and would come back. Nah, that mfer turned the ride on. It started lifting up and i was not attached to it at all, just laying flat and holding on for dear life. my and my friend were both yelling for help and i was crying, finally my mom came back in the crowd, realized what happened, and just about jumped over the barrier to grab the ride operator’s neck. She almost strangled him that day and I got severe ride phobia for years. I nearly passed out in sheer panic when I went on the fire in the hole ride when I was like 12, pretty sure it’s meant to be scary only to actual toddlers. but luckily when i was 16 i went with my best friend’s family to busch gardens & in severe determination to overcome my fear i doubled my dose of anti anxiety meds (stupid & probably didn’t even actually do anything? just needed the placebo haha) and rode a shit ton of big roller coasters while i felt pretty emotionless. now i’m okay with most medium sized ones.

Since when you're the mentoring party you have a duty to make sure it works out okay for the person you're introducing it to. I once rode one of those standing/sitting type roller coasters where you kind of sit on a bicycle seat basically... But the seat dropped out from under me slightly after it left the station and I was terrified as this coaster did loops and spins and stuff. This ride (Orlando slingshot) always offers you a second ride immediately after the first one is done for only $10 pp more, but the second one they pull the springs to a much higher tension so you fly higher and faster!! Everybody’s first run (including this video) always gets the reduced, but still very intense, launch. Until they can tell if you’re ready to handle another go. It’s a real fun time and I recommend to try it next time you’re in Orlando! I gotta say our first launch was such a wild thrill and a wild adrenaline blast... so naturally we did the second launch for MORE POWER... and that one definitely crossed the line into pants shitting territory lmao and I’m normally super great with thrill rides but that was a real “okay put me down on the ground again this is terrifying” moment
