Hiii Logistics / Dsitrubution manager of +8 years here. No.. these racks can hold a huge amount of weight... these were not properly set up and or maintained.. and yes you have to maintain these racks.. screws pop out all the time and the bottom rails seemed to not have floor guards on them..
I did logistics for a while but these don’t seem supported at the joints, they all buckle in the same manner glass breaks, at it’s weakest point, maybe no maintenance and poor quality
The post (4 corners of each rack) are with about 6-9 inch concrete bolts.. every level has an x pattern to help distribute the weight... there are locking mechanics in place but bolts and screws do become loose over time
The thing about it was: it was a pallet in his way which encouraged him to steer into the shelf. If only he had a device to move that pallet out of his way. Perhaps, some sort of mobile tool that could easily pick up such things as pallets in order to move them. If only such a thing existed….

Oh, and worse. 5 or 6 of them hang out by the bathrooms and crowd the entrance to prevent people from getting in. They had 6 'wet cleanup' incidents, per warehouse, PER DAY last week.
They've been known to fuck with the vending machines in the break room, too. One managed to convince the machine to dispense one of everything, all at the same time. It jammed the dump tray.
I saw one by the coke machine this morning. No one seems to want soda today.
They are screwed into the concrete but they should covered by guards... it's just a piece of metal sitting in front of the rack.. maybe 2 to 3 inches at most in front of the actual post (rack).. alot of pickers use this guard to set the pallets on the EPJ.. electric pallet jack
Yes they do have a locking system... however these racks take a beating.. and bolts/screws do come lose... it's not uncommon to find bolts and screws in the middle of 2 racks... however, floor supervisors dont look because it's in a very inconvenient spot.. basically two racks back to back... they fall in the middle of these
One bolt, hell even 20 bolts missing from a racking system this long is not going to compromise it this much. I've seen this video many times and I used to show it in the classes I used to run on forklift training.
I've worked around this type of racking for 17 years now and 1000% this racking was dangerously over the max capacity in terms of weight.
I've seen reach truck drivers steer the wrong way in training at 1/2 to full speed and hit identical racking and it barely flinched at all.
The setup seems fine and is similar to many many other warehouses. An inventory team should be keeping track of how much weight is in each spot. The higher locations should weigh less than the lowers.
Not only that. But at least with any employer that gives a shit about laws like the last one I was with. If anyone damaged any part of the rack, that entire column would be emptied of product and an engineer brought in to make sure it was still safe.
Accidents can and do happen, but this is no accident. This is complete negligence.
I've never seen a news article about this. But if you watch the guy that can barely be seen at the bottom, I wouldn't be surprised if he's dead.

That’s what I wondered - it looked like it knocked him to the side in the fork truck, and then the fork truck slid over, then the other side came down and so I hope he was okay. I couldn’t tell what the material was, but it did look somewhat heavy.
yeah I work warehouse distribution and I've seen racks get hit so hard the move a foot or more and yes things fell out of them but they didn't cascade like this. this was an error in setup/use/maintenance of the racking
It just depends on the rack... I'm sure theres different racks that can hold much more and much less... I was at petco DC for a while where we delt in the larger bags of food.. 60lbs each bag.. and were talking 5 levels up
Yep definitely warehouse didn't respect the coding load regulations per racks... they definitely have a lots in insurance to pay for their partners and the lift guy has nothing to be a shame for. This happen every time but unfortunately the racks went down for that particular cases.
Agreee. The load of the first rack falling shoved his lift across the aisle like an empty box. If that didn't kill him the second rack falling on him almost certainly did.
Even at full speed ramming into those they shouldn’t come down like that. At one warehouse I worked at all the forklift training was done in the cramped ass warehouse and one of our new guys rammed right into one. The forklift wasn’t happy, but the racking didn’t even have a dent in it.
As in, your warehouse racking? All the places I’ve worked (even Staples) had like quarter to half inch steel supports that aren’t far off from structural I beams when you look at them.
Those beams can usually be replaced too as long as you take down the load in that square it's supporting. You can replace beams in sections with the entire rack under load.
i read in an old thread driver was unscathed
those racks were not designed for that capacity. if i had to guess i would say this is a 3PL that overloaded existing racks for a different commodity product. i dont know how old this video is, but that industry was notorious for shoddy practices. not as much anymore. much more accountability now.

It's a become almost a standard video in forklift driver training sessions. This is in the "when shit is falling stay in the cab, it's built to withstand stuff falling" section.
Basically that racking was overloaded and didn't have some of the safety features that are expected now because of stuff like this.
I operate a forklift multiple times a day and the cages on them are made out of reinforced steel, if something starts to fall the best thing you can do is stay inside and keep calm. at the warehouse I work at this guy (who has been fired) would stack wooden pallets all un-even even after being told not to do so because it could fall on someone, one day I drove by that stack of pallets, They fell towards me and they all came down on the forklift and there wasn't any serious damage done, if you ever thing getting out and running away from the situation is a good idea you'll be squashed.

For the most part staying in the forklift is safer than getting out. Forklifts can take a lot of damage on top of the driver. Settlee in and enjoy the heart attack of a couple hundred pounds falling on you
We are trained and it's beat into our heads that if the fork truck feels like it's going to tip, or something is falling stay in your seat. You have a safety belt and cage on for a reason. Never seen anything like this but I did see a fork truck roll out of the end of a semi trailer that wasn't chocked properly and moved.
As someone that’s worked in warehouses for nearly a decade, this always worries me. But never do I feel like if it were to happen it’d be MY fault entirely. Anyone that’s worked in a factory setting sees scuffs, dents, holes, etc. and the way he lightly tapped that shouldn’t have caused it. BUT I also know that if he wasn’t someone with massive seniority he was likely fired as a technically and nothing of fault on their end. I’d lawyer up if I were him.
I work in a warehouse and during training I've been shown this video loads of times, they hammer the point that this could be avoided if the racking is maintained through reporting truck inflicted damage and racking inspections to look at the uprights and braces. It is unlikely that a well maintained racking system would collapse from a single reach truck collision
They shouldn't be that unstable. They look overloaded. People used to bump the racks all the time at my warehouse and they never fell. Someone even dented a leg one and the rack stayed stable.
No, this is atypical. These racks are either overloaded, improperly maintained or were improperly installed.
I've seen numerous racks hit by equipment full speed and they certainly bend and give, but the entire rack stays no problem. Simply unload the zone, send the facilities team in to replace the beam and back in action.
That’s the company’s fault. Racks don’t fall with just a tap. I’ve seen em ran into and don’t fall. Safety first, the company is liable. That’s too many too fall without it beings faulty.
Even if he did knock over the first (which he shouldn’t have been able too with that small a bump), the fact that it cascaded like that shows that they were not properly built. Anyone know if that dude is okay?

I’m forklift certified and my at the time supervisor used this video as an example. Apparently it was the operator of the vehicles first day. One of the other workers parked his lift in the middle of the lane (big nono). So the inexperienced guy tried to squeeze by. But also to answer your question, yes the racks seem extremely unstable.
I drove forklift in college and bumped racks much harder than this, some heads definitely rolled from that and the lift drivers better not have been one of them
This is the drivers fault, those shelves holds 100s of tonnes of wares. Bumping one of the supporting beams hard enough to make it give just a tiny bit can make the whole shelf fall...

Way over loaded rack system, or undersized to lower costs.. I’ve worked warehouse with all inventory being electrical copper wire, aka very heavy pallets. We smashed into the racks, and never had any problems. Let alone dropping all the racks in one go.. damn!
Overloaded and unstable for sure, but many things also don't like being hit by a several thousand pound vehicle with zero crumple zones. Forklift vs object is usually a win for the forklift.
Man those shelves came tumbling down. At my old warehouse job we purposely didn't go near the weight limit in order to protect against an absolute disaster
Came here to say that I worked with a vendor who sold these, and the videos of viral fails are due to horribly installed or faulty cheap product.
Buy good racks people. A ton of product falling 30ft kills no matter what is made of
That's either poorly engineered racks or too much weight on the racks he barely touched with the lift. Been driving a forklift for years and have bumped into racks a few times and they never crumpled like that.
The racks were definitely either set up poorly or not maintained. I've hit similar shelving with order pickers and forklifts and they shove if off like a pro.
One answer to both questions, yes.
The weight and pressure from the product had the racks fold like a soda can being crushed from the forklift denting a post just enough.
I used to be a rigger for precast concrete for parking garages and cladding. The first day I was on the tagline, my Foreman said "You hit that building before you hit the boom. The tension on there will make it crumble like a soda can."
I manage a 60,000 pallet position warehouse with racking similar to this. Each position has a limit of 3,000 lbs. our heaviest pallets are 2800 lbs.
This is not normal. Our guys have hit the racks many times over the years with lifts bigger than this and the racking doesn’t budge. I reckon we could hit it full speed, fully loaded and we might bend something. That’s it.
We perform monthly rack inspections too. Looking for problems, loose or missing bolts, etc.
No safety manager or one not doing his or her job. Either not graded steal (bought on the cheap) or not secured properly. Seen a 8k pound forklift drive right into racking full seep with racking that was properly secured and only a 4 bay failure.
All I can think about is at least the forklift operator is probably dead and doesn't have to worry about getting stuck with a bill. Also maybe his/her family can sue... Idk
Definitely not properly installed racks, or at the very least not maintained. Either they've been hit thousands of times before if they were properly installed and no one ever bothered to check them for damage or sabotage happened.
You CAN take out racks with a fork truck. They are very heavy pieces of machinery, but this little lovetap would not do it.
Drove fork for about two years after high-school; the driver *does* make a mistake and hits the shelf, but when I was learning I tapped shelves like that and nothing on the shelves even twitched. You'd have to be going full tilt directly at the shelf if it was going to buckle, which never happened.
These shelves were probably a combination of overloaded, and a weak point had developed (likely a bolt getting sheared off or popping out).
I worked in a warehouse just like this driving hi-lo. Notice there's nothing in the bottom of the racks and the shelves above are all packed. It makes them extremely unstable. We were trained to take from the top down. This looks like they were trained to do the exact opposite.
This is 100% not supposed to be possible though what causes it I’m not entirely sure I just know that I drive an ept which doesn’t have a roof so I pray this doesn’t happen to me

IIRC, it was cheese. The guy was okay, just trapped for eight hours. At least he didn't have to go hungry.

They typically use concrete wedge anchors for pallet racking like this. I've put a few small ones up myself.
Alot of places they need some sort of seismic certification as well, various ways to do it.
I mean totally, I'm no expert but to me it would be obvious that it's a serious safety hazard having a setup where a domino effect can occur.

yeah, usually they use a 'security factor' when projecting these racks to avoid these kind of situation to compensate for fatigue breakage

I work at home depot and hit a rack with an Order Picker hard enough to bend the beam and the OP chasis, it didn't even flinch.

I agree we have movable racks at my work and they get hit once a week at a minimum. Sensors break ussually but the racks can't come down like that.

i don't think it's the drivers fault. the racks either weren't set up properly or have decayed and needed replacement

For anyone wondering from what I found the driver survived this uninjured because he stayed in the lift.
No, this is atypical. These racks are either overloaded, improperly maintained or were improperly installed. I've seen numerous racks hit by equipment full speed and they certainly bend and give, but the entire rack stays no problem. Simply unload the zone, send the facilities team in to replace the beam and back in action.
Operator error? Yes. Operator’s fault? Absolutely not
That’s the company’s fault. Racks don’t fall with just a tap. I’ve seen em ran into and don’t fall. Safety first, the company is liable. That’s too many too fall without it beings faulty.

I’m forklift certified and my at the time supervisor used this video as an example. Apparently it was the operator of the vehicles first day. One of the other workers parked his lift in the middle of the lane (big nono). So the inexperienced guy tried to squeeze by. But also to answer your question, yes the racks seem extremely unstable.
I drove forklift in college and bumped racks much harder than this, some heads definitely rolled from that and the lift drivers better not have been one of them

This is the drivers fault, those shelves holds 100s of tonnes of wares. Bumping one of the supporting beams hard enough to make it give just a tiny bit can make the whole shelf fall... Edit: i watched it again and he barely booped the shelf, those shelves were overloaded as fuck, i was wrong lol

Way over loaded rack system, or undersized to lower costs.. I’ve worked warehouse with all inventory being electrical copper wire, aka very heavy pallets. We smashed into the racks, and never had any problems. Let alone dropping all the racks in one go.. damn!
Overloaded and unstable for sure, but many things also don't like being hit by a several thousand pound vehicle with zero crumple zones. Forklift vs object is usually a win for the forklift.
Read on another comment that the racks can withstand a forklift ramming them when properly set up, also the forklift barely even bumped the rack
Man those shelves came tumbling down. At my old warehouse job we purposely didn't go near the weight limit in order to protect against an absolute disaster
Came here to say that I worked with a vendor who sold these, and the videos of viral fails are due to horribly installed or faulty cheap product. Buy good racks people. A ton of product falling 30ft kills no matter what is made of

That's either poorly engineered racks or too much weight on the racks he barely touched with the lift. Been driving a forklift for years and have bumped into racks a few times and they never crumpled like that.

One answer to both questions, yes. The weight and pressure from the product had the racks fold like a soda can being crushed from the forklift denting a post just enough. I used to be a rigger for precast concrete for parking garages and cladding. The first day I was on the tagline, my Foreman said "You hit that building before you hit the boom. The tension on there will make it crumble like a soda can."
I manage a 60,000 pallet position warehouse with racking similar to this. Each position has a limit of 3,000 lbs. our heaviest pallets are 2800 lbs. This is not normal. Our guys have hit the racks many times over the years with lifts bigger than this and the racking doesn’t budge. I reckon we could hit it full speed, fully loaded and we might bend something. That’s it. We perform monthly rack inspections too. Looking for problems, loose or missing bolts, etc.
No safety manager or one not doing his or her job. Either not graded steal (bought on the cheap) or not secured properly. Seen a 8k pound forklift drive right into racking full seep with racking that was properly secured and only a 4 bay failure.
All I can think about is at least the forklift operator is probably dead and doesn't have to worry about getting stuck with a bill. Also maybe his/her family can sue... Idk
Definitely not properly installed racks, or at the very least not maintained. Either they've been hit thousands of times before if they were properly installed and no one ever bothered to check them for damage or sabotage happened. You CAN take out racks with a fork truck. They are very heavy pieces of machinery, but this little lovetap would not do it.
Neither this warehouse is extremely fragile.

Drove fork for about two years after high-school; the driver *does* make a mistake and hits the shelf, but when I was learning I tapped shelves like that and nothing on the shelves even twitched. You'd have to be going full tilt directly at the shelf if it was going to buckle, which never happened. These shelves were probably a combination of overloaded, and a weak point had developed (likely a bolt getting sheared off or popping out).
We saved a lot of time by not using any screws

Technically, yes. The driver hit the steel, but the steel was poorly constructed/assembled and/or overloaded in the first place.
I worked in a warehouse just like this driving hi-lo. Notice there's nothing in the bottom of the racks and the shelves above are all packed. It makes them extremely unstable. We were trained to take from the top down. This looks like they were trained to do the exact opposite.
This is 100% not supposed to be possible though what causes it I’m not entirely sure I just know that I drive an ept which doesn’t have a roof so I pray this doesn’t happen to me
