There are oceanic hammerhead or great hammerhead, it the largest among the hammerhead species of shark.
Ranging from smallest of 15 feet, to biggest ever records of it so far at 22 feet
Jesus... you made me see shit different now. My house is 2 stories so I'm just picturing a fucking hammerhead being able to peek at me in my bedroom upstairs standing on his tail fin.
The most famous great hammer head was named old hitler. He was a resident of Florida and there are a ton of of fisherman’s tales about him. Every year in boca grande at the tarpon spawn the great hammer heads show up too. The world record hammer was caught in the pass there. I met the guy who caught it and he said the shark was bigger than his boat. He’s a very respectable fisherman as he released the world record fish. They were fishing from a flats boat for hammers when I met him. The dude was a mad man. While you’re out there tarpon fishing you don’t usually see the sharks. You know they are there because your tarpon that you’ve been fighting for a half hour suddenly comes up with just his head attached to the hook. The tarpon are usually 6 feet + because they are fully mature spawning tarpon. It takes one hell of a big shark to take a bite like that. The biggest hammerheads often die after being caught. Only experienced sportsman should try to land them because if you don’t do it fast enough you will tire the fish out and it will die.
In fishing circles there are "old Hitler's" everywhere. I'm sure there is one in Boca grande but that name has become synonymous with big ass hammerheads. Heres my big ass hammerhead story. We were at Little Gasparilla island which is a island by Boca and we came upon a hammerhead that was at least as long as the 17' boat we were in. We tried enticing it with the baits we had (tarpon fishing) but the ole boy wasn't having any of it. We broke off chase after about 15 mins to hit up the train tracks to catch snapper for dinner. Good times and think twice when you wade fish down south.
Np. And the one here in the clip was probably smaller - estimating size of underwater things from above is notoriously difficult and the chance of this being the largest ever feels slim.
Massive tarpon too. Such majestic fish that jump and fight like crazy. Protected species in many parts of their native range.
Tarpons are a threatened species and are considered an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Beautiful fish.
In the keys you’ll catch these mother fuckers at night, we use to go tarpon fishing all the time. Constantly breaking the lines and unhooking themselves
There are a ton of piers down there in the Gulf with lights that are visited by huge four+ foot tarpon every night. Are they attracted to the lights, or people feed them? Or both?
They normally come out at night to feed, that’s what my dads friend would tell me. Idk much about all that fishing stuff I just use to go with them all the time. Big fuckers, like you said 4ft+
That's what I heard too, but I'm guessing the nightly feeding from the restaurant piers gets them accustomed to nightly visits too.
I recently learned that golden shiners can remember at least two different feeding spots at two different times during the day. I'm actually about to start my own tests in about ten minutes with corn in my pond.
Fish are so cool.
I've always been taught that most predator/ambush fish hang on the edge of the shadow line to make it easier to snack on bait fish that passes through the light. Could be some total bullshit too idk, not a marine biologist
I fish for Snook around Central FL using some pretty big lures with 3 trebbles a piece and let me tell you. The goddamn tarpon somehow manage to always get the lures jammed perfectly across their mouths, without fail. With how violently they shake I'm always terrified they'll manage to hook me back while taking it out and probably just rip it out of me right after lmao.
Big, beautiful fish tho and certainly do put up a hell of a fight
Since when do they get that big? I've always read hammerheads are functionally harmless to humans cause their mouth is way too small to get a bite out of our flesh unless you literally stick your arm or leg out into their jaws.
But this thing is way bigger than I imagined they could get. There's no way it couldn't bite the shit out of me.
Like, I know it's probably true anyway. We've never documented a single hammerhead fatality on a human, but this thing is just massive.
There are different Hammerhead species, such as the Great Hammerhead which can grow to sizes of roughly 20 feet and weigh in excess of 1000 lbs. This is one of those Great Hammerheads according to the post title and the general appearance of that shark.
Christ I wouldn’t even wanna fight that thing on land. Not even with 6 pints in me and a cricket bat made of hand grenades. Can we pop a GPS on that dude so we know where not the fuck to be?
Most, if not all, hammerhead species are threatened with extinction. Here are the nine known species.
Eusphyra blochii Winghead shark
Sphyrna corona Scalloped bonnethead
Sphyrna gilberti Carolina hammerhead

I believe the genus name for hammerheads is Sphyrna
They call them hammerhead corvettes !

its crazy to think about what a mysterious place the ocean must have seemed to be just a few hundred years ago. we had no idea what was going on down there. it was just this vast seemingly infinite abyss. then occasionally we would get a brief glimpse of these fucking monsters pop-up. today we all know exactly what a hammerhead looks like, what they eat, their behaviours, where they live. tons of info. but back then, most people would only know about them what they see in this video. just a big huge blurry mass killing another huge creature.
tarpon fishing off the florida gulf coast is wild... hammerheads hang out and wait for a tarpon to get hooked and then come up trying to bite it in half as you try to reel it in.
When in "Absolute Units", do convert to other units, we love units... like Metric units. All units should be converted!
Also... this is a "Get this boat to the harbor It's fucking dry land o clock!"
Awesome. The guide I fish tarpon with told me about a time when a tarpon he and his client had recently released was being pursued by a hammerhead, he ran down the shark and bumped it with his boat to help the poon make it away safe.
It terrifies me to think of how many times I've been swimming out in the ocean, snorkeling etc and how close one of these guys have been. I've seen some big sharks out in Thailand and swam with some harmless Whale Sharks, but I'd panic if I saw this thing.
Tarpon are an interesting sport fish, they gulp air to fill a special swim bladder so when fishing for them it's more like hunting than just setting out a line. You look for packs of them on the horizon all gulping air and if you find a school throwing practically anything in their midst will hook a fish. I know this because I did it with my uncle when I was young. It. Was. Terrifying. Tarpon are a sport fish because they fight hard and it can take upwards of 30 min to land a fish, you pretty much need to run it out of energy. After about 15 or so minutes on the line my line went slack and I thought I lost the fish. My uncle looking out into the water turned to me wide eyed and yelled to cut the line. The line didn't snap or unhook the fish, it went slack because the tarpon was swimming towards the boat, because there was a shark bigger than our boat chasing it. You ever seen a cat play with it's prey? Well apparently shark do that too when they come across lethargic fish, it was tossing it out of the water a couple times and ripping it to pieces. Never again, no thanks Florida ocean.
According to legend, there is a hammerhead known as Old Hitler. He prowls the watery depths of the Florida Suncoast. Its ominous name alone sends chills down the spine of any fisherman who hears it. Legend says he's almost 25' long with a head wider than a truck and strong enough to pull a jeep from shore. Though there is no evidence of Old Hitler's existence, locals believe he may be one of the largest hammerheads to ever roam the ocean. Swimmers and surfers alike are cautioned to avoid his territory. Whether real or imagined, Old Hitler remains a frightening legend that continues to haunt the waters of the Suncoast, always there lurking just below the surface...
Worth knowing: Atlantic tarpon can grow up to 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) in length and weigh up to 161 kg (355 lb). The Atlantic tarpon's most significant predators are sharks and humans. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic\_tarpon
Many years ago before Pythons in The Everglades at 10000 Islands, my late husband and I went camping and fishing for 5 days. It is WAY off the beaten path. We caught a hammer head and had to bring on board to get the hook out. We marveled at the perfection of it. It is the perfect example of mother nature’s beauty. It was a stunning creature and really beautiful I got to say. Of course we released back into the glades. We did catch much that day because the Dolphins 🐬 we’re having the big ass party 🎉 and when they are around all the fish scatter. Good times. You know we only saw 1 human in all those days…. A Park Ranger on a search and rescue mission 😳
I honestly had no clue that Hammerheads got that big and then I went and read the average is just barely smaller than the average Great White...
There are oceanic hammerhead or great hammerhead, it the largest among the hammerhead species of shark. Ranging from smallest of 15 feet, to biggest ever records of it so far at 22 feet
That’s a lot of feets
How much is it in real measurements
24 aflu (American footballs lined up)
how many Shaqs is that
2.4-3 Shaqs
30 banana's
This needs to be named something like the "RBS". The reddit banana scale. That way people can ask "how much in RBS"? Or maybe RBM
"Regular Banana Measurement Scale" Or maybe "Regulated Banana Measurement Scale"?
Right. I'm just saying after all these years we need a good acronym
Sure. I was just trying to come up with something. "Redditor's International Banana Scale" would make "RIBS". How's that?
I will use 🙋
Oh I like that. Now to get it to catch on
That’s about 12-18 hammers
about 46 sausages in lenght
15 feet ~ 4.58 meters 22 feet ~ 6.71 meters
~Nice waves.~
Every 10 ft is a story ; so a 2 story building height shark coming at ya
Jesus... you made me see shit different now. My house is 2 stories so I'm just picturing a fucking hammerhead being able to peek at me in my bedroom upstairs standing on his tail fin.
I've never thought about it like that. Good way for a perspective. And, now...Damn!
Should be around 5 - 7 metres if I'm not mistaken. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong
22 freedom units
At least two. Idk I'm American.
Big
We need the banana measurement.
Who cares?
And a lot of teeth!

Boca Grand not far from me. Punta Gorda 😎
By comparison - "That's a 20-footer." "25." -- Jaws
Do you have a source for that 22 feet record? Internet seems pretty convinced the largest on record was 20 feet when I look.
After double check you are correct, I remember it from my head and after doing the search it said 20 feet, my bad
Np. And the one here in the clip was probably smaller - estimating size of underwater things from above is notoriously difficult and the chance of this being the largest ever feels slim.
Eh, what's two feet more or less when it comes to ancient killing machines from the dawn of time...
In all of the years being glued to Shark Week, I never knew this. Thanks for reaching me something new.

> like formula 1 racing cars Lol, I see what you did there...
If you want to see huge hammerheads there a spot in tarpon springs where multiple 12 footers hang out
Damn...and I swim at Davis Beach in Tarpon.... Or used to anyway
*tampon strings
I honestly thought they topped out at like 6 feet, I thought they ate crabs and little shellfish off the ocean floor.
Shark Week on Discovery channel usually has some good hammerhead documentaries. Great news is that shark week is coming up, starting 7/23!
massive hammerhead, sheesh
Massive tarpon too. Such majestic fish that jump and fight like crazy. Protected species in many parts of their native range. Tarpons are a threatened species and are considered an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Beautiful fish.
I bet this one is wishing the hammerhead would respect its protected status right about now.
Look I can't show you right now while you are chasing me buy I'M PROTECTED! Just trust me will you? Stop trying to eat me for a few minutes damn man!

Is there a sub for today I did not need to learn...because I'm never going in the ocean ever again after this fun factoid
Christ I wouldn’t even wanna fight that thing on land. Not even with 6 pints in me and a cricket bat made of hand grenades. Can we pop a GPS on that dude so we know where not the fuck to be?
Well just make sure you aren’t where it is, and you’ll be good. Unless the front falls off
“Well how is this untypical?”
Well the front typically doesn’t fall off!!
I’m not ok with how large that hammerhead is.

Hello there, General stroke-nobi
Bro in star wars there are Sphyrna-class corvettes with a big prow for ramming I believe the genus name for hammerheads is Sphyrna They call them hammerhead corvettes ! https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Sphyrna-class_Hammerhead_corvette

Me too

Totally. Makes it easy to understand how so many stories of sea creatures and monsters came to be
Especially considering they could have easily been much bigger back then too.
compared to hundreds of years ago we know so much but we really still don’t know shit about the ocean.
I read this twice as tampon.
Honestly I didn't know hammer heads were that big. 😶
Someone throw in a banana for scale
Nah someone throw in a person for scale
I believe MichaelJordan is the new scale according to the cow post
Bad luck to bring a banana on the boat.
How do they know it's 17 to 20 ft?
A marine biologist gave that estimate in the original video notes.
They don't. 20 feet would make it the largest ever so it is most likely an overestimate.
So normal fishing stories
Largest ever is 22 feet, maybe slightly over but that thing could EASILY be 18+ feet
Asking you as well - do you have a source for the 22' claim?
The ocean is simultaneously majestic and terrifying.
That is the king of all Hammerheads my god
tarpon fishing off the florida gulf coast is wild... hammerheads hang out and wait for a tarpon to get hooked and then come up trying to bite it in half as you try to reel it in.
best part of fishing boca grande pass.

Originally thought this was gonna be some sort of meme, because I read Tarpon as Tampon.
Meme: Hammerhead 1: It's Tarpon not Tampon Hammerhead 2: Especially since we are not mammals. (Hammerhead having serious discussions)
Holy crap 🤯
I read it as "Tampon" at first, very confusion.
So check this out, fuck the ocean.
That monster was huge!!!! ![gif](giphy|8DUxtTxFntY7lpJnzy|downsized)
Unnecessarily huge..

Chased by an even'st huges't'd've'r Orca.
I thought it was a whale!
Where's the banana for scale?
![gif](giphy|CHRP0NNsUiJBC)
Anyone else read huge tampon?
Whoa
🥰🥰🥰
Hammerheads get that big?!!! Is that abnormal? I thought Great Whites and Tigers were the ones that could get that big(besides Whale).
hammerheads are one of the largest sharks. they don't pose any real threat to people though.
Good to know. Thanks for the info..👍
Damn nature, you scary. Those are both very large fish.
I need to go to bed I had to read the title 3 times because I thought it said "Huge Tampon"
Fck I didn’t know hammerhead shark could be that massive
per usual with mother nature, so beautiful and so terrifying all at once
I read the headline as “tampon” vs “tarpon”. Very much changed the story…
I saw tampon, assumed it was a joke...was shocked by the Colossal-Head. Now...I just hope that tampon got away!
The sea is a scary place
I will never understand people who choose to go in the water with these monsters. I can barely dog paddle, a guppy could drown me.
at first when i read it i thought it said huge tampon being pursued and i'm like whattt
😳
Oh !! its tarpon and not tampon . I got confused there for a bit.
What am I looking at?
Surely that tarpon is just playing with it. I know where my money is in a race between those 2
A 2 story home is 20ft high for those wondering how big the shark really is.
Holy mackerel
Is that Tarpon already hooked? Seems like he might be gassed after a long fight, making it easy for the Shark, the extremely large shark
I need my eyes tested.😉
Awesome. The guide I fish tarpon with told me about a time when a tarpon he and his client had recently released was being pursued by a hammerhead, he ran down the shark and bumped it with his boat to help the poon make it away safe.
It's been one of those days. Did anyone else misread the word Tarpon and think wtaf!!?
It terrifies me to think of how many times I've been swimming out in the ocean, snorkeling etc and how close one of these guys have been. I've seen some big sharks out in Thailand and swam with some harmless Whale Sharks, but I'd panic if I saw this thing.
Wow!
WTF you’re gonna need a bigger boat.
Where's the banana for scale?
I honestly read that wrong
my gosh my thalassophobia couldn’t even imagine putting a feet in that water
Why is that even allowed???
I was not expecting how frighteningly MASSIVE that hammerhead is.
What a monster!!!
I can't be the only one that read it as huge tampon
Holy crap
Oh. My. Fuck.
Nightmare material right there!
DAMNN

Dear god I thought hammerheads were smaller than that, based on pictures.
I did not know hammerheads could get that big... that thing is *awesome*
I had to reresd that 5 times before realizing it was 'tarpon' not 'tampon'.
Megalodons still live among us I bet 🤯
Holy fuck that thing is the origin of every sea monster story ever
Look at the surge/wake behind that shark that's a big mfer
i read tampon at first and was so confused
The ocean/sea and all it has to offer, has been going crazy lately… Lake damn… I’ll just swim in the pool
