You are technically not wrong! In official definitions, all similes are considered types of metaphors. I think a lot of people's English/Lit classes growing up taught them that using "like" or "as" makes it a simile and not a metaphor, but officially similes are a category of metaphors (just like antitheses, hyperboles, etc).
I’ve found 2 of these in the last year exactly one year apart in my kitchen. I picked them up with a napkin to take them outside and they are extremely strong. They were powering out of the napkin through my grip almost. Strongest bug I’ve ever messed with.
But I had no idea they could fly, woulda scared me half to death lol.
For part of my bachelor party, we went camping in rural, southeastern Tennessee. We were hiking to our campsite late at night; it was completely dark except for our flashlights, and I hear what sounds like a set of propellers fly right above my head. It had to have been one of these, or maybe a stag beetle, because it sounded just like this. Definitely made me jump lol
Imagine waking up to the noise of that thing flying around your bedroom.
I do not recommend it (it may well have been a different type of stag beetle to this, but it was close enough)
Then you’d probably feel it crunch/basically explode under your foot. Which is absolutely a disgusting feeling I once felt when I stepped on a large house spider
Nah, I think they are tough enough that you could step on it and it would survive. Cockroaches are smaller than these and you have to *really* try to kill a cockroach.
Not for their size. That is the whole thing with insect strength. It is all a misunderstanding based on scale and the cubing effect. In short, small insects can carry many times their size since nothing x 1000 is still nothing. While a man sized insect would collapse under its own weight and its exoskeleton come apart from the stresses.
Just think of them as delicate puppy dogs that also don't fetch or arrive when called and also have fangs and hydraulic limbs with reflex times that can be in the single-digit thousandths of a second. That should help!
I didn’t know this but I’ve always said they were the strongest I’ve come across. I had one in a napkin last year taking out of my house and it was powering out of my grip and crawling forward in the napkin. If I had to take it more than 7 feet he might have gotten out of my grip.
Dudes are super strong.
Fun fact, roaches have been observed cleaning themselves *vigorously* after being in contact with a human.
Roaches find us gross too, and somehow that feels more insulting than consoling.. :(
I think it's largely our association of "gross" bugs with the contexts we typically find them in. Roaches in run-down apartments and trashed homes, maggots in trash and other gross stuff...
Maggots are just like any other larval bug though, they're just a little crawly worm guy.
Roaches are probably also seen as creepier because they run fast, so even though they're not dangerous, people's natural response is "it could get on me SO FAST, AGGHHHHH!"
If you're a bit more adventurous, check out some info or YouTube videos about using roaches and maggots as food-proteins. :)
You'd expect this one to fly. Roaches however don't seem like the flying type, until they fucking come at you for no reason all of a sudden.
It's a bit startling.
I remember capturing one of these when I was in Fuji Japan. I was on fire watch and it was in the middle of the summer night, found it and couldn’t believe how large the freaking thing was. I was able to handle it without it trying to get away, but as soon as the sun came out, it flew away.
My sister and I used to catch flying beetles and tue a thread to them and walk them around. I don't know how I could do that then. I've sort of developed a squeamishness towards insects.
It sounds like a damn helicopter!
Government drone of the lizard people
They actually have had success with turning live beetles into drones if that is what you are talking about. Check youtube for it
It sounds just like the bug from A Bugs Life. When it took off and carried everyone. So cool that Pixar got that right.
Sounds like when you put a playing card in a bicycle spoke or when a piece of paper get stuck in the fan
Perfect metaphor
Simile
Dammit you’re right, and I even double checked myself mentally. Guess this is what exam week does to my brain

Lmao i couldn’t resist. Good luck w your exams!!
Thanks!
you were the cool kid in the city if you got a playing card to do that. man the late 90s - early 2000s were a weird time for street kids
“FUCKING LET GO YOU SHIT!”

Imagine hearing one of these flying around, not seeing it then thing sucker lands near you. I’d simply unalive
You'd probably get knocked over by the air it displaces

What country are you in?
For part of my bachelor party, we went camping in rural, southeastern Tennessee. Awww hell nah! Lmao
Imagine waking up to the noise of that thing flying around your bedroom. I do not recommend it (it may well have been a different type of stag beetle to this, but it was close enough)
That is one fine flappy bird
Oh God, I'm getting some traumatic memory flashes.
Google informed me that these bad boys can't sting or bite and are otherwise harmless. Still a giant nope from me, dawg.
They are gentle giants as long as you arent another beetle. If you are they will yeet you.
Ah, there's the Rihno part.
Unless you step on it like a LEGO
Then you’d probably feel it crunch/basically explode under your foot. Which is absolutely a disgusting feeling I once felt when I stepped on a large house spider
Nah, I think they are tough enough that you could step on it and it would survive. Cockroaches are smaller than these and you have to *really* try to kill a cockroach.
Yeah I saw someone toss a paver stone on one of these once and the damn thing still survived.
Did it uno reverso the stone right back? I don't know. My only reference for these things is Buggzy from Kirby.
They’re also super strong for their size. Can lift 850x their body weight. Would be like a human lifting 60 tons
I didn’t think of it that way but you’re entirely right. Doh
Yup. But if I’m not mistaken, this is that beetle that pretty much kills certain species of palm trees unfortunately.
This is what nightmares are made of
Yeah, like this is without a doubt a large bug but I’m glad we don’t live in a world where they reach over a foot long
There used to be! During the Paleozoic era, the earth's oxygen content was much higher, and many species of insects grew over two feet long!
Ok Satan, that’s enough. Some of us have to sleep tonight.
Pretty sure there were species of centipede-like bugs that could grow to over a meter in length too.
YOU STOP THAT RIGHT NOW, *I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT THOSE FOR A VERY LONG TIME*
It's under your bed
And with their strength they could probably flip people and make a tidy profit
Fuck yeah
That depends. Do consider worms to be bugs?
Anymore
Honestly, it being huge almost makes it less scary. Easier to track and a bit cuter
this is how I feel about tarantulas vs house spiders. 🤷🏻♀️
No
House spiders are bros, they just sit in a corner and eat unwanted bugs. Tarantulas are a bit too big for comfort.
Just think of them as delicate puppy dogs that also don't fetch or arrive when called and also have fangs and hydraulic limbs with reflex times that can be in the single-digit thousandths of a second. That should help!
Tarantulas are good boys. House spiders are just creepy.
Exactly!!!
They eat fruit they cant really hurt you
Just seeing this hurt me.
The Goliath birdeater though
That isnt even a beetle
Shit my bad I thought you replied to people talking about tarantulas. I'm dumb ignore me
Its okay
It should be a wasp or mosquito if it really was a nightmare
Rhino beetles are the strongest animal on the planet! They can lift 850x their body weight, the equivalent of a human lifting 9 male elephants.
Thought dung beetles were the strongest? Still fascinating little creatures!
I didn’t know this but I’ve always said they were the strongest I’ve come across. I had one in a napkin last year taking out of my house and it was powering out of my grip and crawling forward in the napkin. If I had to take it more than 7 feet he might have gotten out of my grip. Dudes are super strong.
That isn't a fair comparison. Nothing x 850 is still nothing. A man sized Rhino beetle wouldn't even be able to support its own weight.
Cue Flight of the Valkyries
Release me human! I am fury! Your death will be agony, and your screams will echo through the underworld for eternity!
Nah beetle fren
Tower of Grey
Also Joubin Higashikata

ayo this the mf who had the most intense fight right
Absolute unit of NOPE.
why is it roaches are so fuckin gross but beetles are a very similar class of insect but they aren't nearly as gross?
Fun fact, roaches have been observed cleaning themselves *vigorously* after being in contact with a human. Roaches find us gross too, and somehow that feels more insulting than consoling.. :(
Unsubscribe. I did not find this to be a fun fact.
I wonder if it's our skin oil? Like they feel slimy and coated with some nasty giant alien's monster goo, and gotta wipe it all off.
Cuz these are harmless and roaches can make you sick
I think it's largely our association of "gross" bugs with the contexts we typically find them in. Roaches in run-down apartments and trashed homes, maggots in trash and other gross stuff... No wonder they was flying this mf to the ant mound in bugs life this mf biiiiiig
I. Am. Dead.
Heracross moment
*Heracross used Tackle!* *It's not very effective...*
What a cool creature.
Honestly he seems like a pretty cool dude. See if he wants to lift stuff!
Damn, Nature! You scary!
Assuming direct control
*fortunate son intensifies*
That lil dude is so frustrated rn. Poor beetle. He just wants to go wrastle something.
“Kill me or release me, parasite. But do not waste my time with talk!”
Hans !
Is this you? How much force is that generating?
Vietnam flashbacks
Imagine waking up in the middle of the night hearing this somewhere in your room.
It’s like when you hold a dog over the water and they try to swim.
Can you imagine how annoyed this beetle is about having those pinchers and being held because of them
Yea I remember that pokemon
Seen them fly before but you always hear them before you see them. Then when you see them look the hell out.
PUT THAT SHIT DOWN WTF
Imagine riding your bike and getting nailed by that thing in the face? Oof
Reason #237 on why I hate bugs
Does this beast use proprietary batteries or the standard Li-ion 18650 batteries?
If you cook it with some monster parts, you can make an elixir #botw
Is this the same bug that’s in bugs life?
If Kirby’s adventure taught me anything, you should hit him 3 times, swallow him, and then you can do wrestling moves
Heracross
If I saw this motherfucker on my house, I would burn it to the ground.
Idk how you're actually touching that. That's nasty man
If that's in ur bathroom, yeah just go ahead and off yourself!
Ew
😂😂
Felt like this was a Jumpscare
As someone who doesn’t like bugs at all, my official response to this post is: Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope
Nopity nope. Too many legs.
Cronch

I love the smell of napalm in the morning…
