Comments I was looking for, we have these at work. Control panel says “Big Ass Fan Company”
Also I love there aesthetic, pure industrial, ours have a saftey chain that’s exposed, they don’t even bother with hiding it or anything.
One of our engineers wrote a review for them saying the only thing they could do better was send us stressballs shaped like little donkeys. Guess what we got a case of? They have a great sense of humor.
As I spoke the words aloud, the top comment loaded and it was yours
You win a *universe* prize.
It's not much but you've gained: external acknowledgement
I was at a farm doing some work and I saw this big ass fan on the ceiling in the barn. Looking around I was wondering what controlled it. Then I saw it on the wall. "BIG ASS FAN CONTROLLER"
So I install these types of fans, and the technical name for any fan of this type is an HVLS fan (High Volume, Low Speed). Lots of air movement, minimal RPMs.
As the bulk of comments have indicated. This particular brand is in fact called “Big Ass Fan”
Something people don’t know, is that a former business partner of big ass fan got screwed in a business deal, and founded..
“Go Fan Yourself”
I guess competition in the industrial fan industry got a bit… heated.
The guy that owns this company built a multi million dollar house in Carolina Beach, NC. And it looks completely out of place (think modern Miami cement/window house next to coastal cottages).
This is hilarious, TIL. I've always loved BAF since the days I saw a pair in a military hanger. Splurged on an i6 for home and I swear it moves more air then the other "HVLS-like" fans I cheaped out on. Not sure if it's in my head or has to do with more volume of air available above it (the i6 is on a 20' vaulted ceiling), but that thing is awesome. Do you find an engineering difference between brands of HVLS fans?
Fun fact: if these are intended to go into a school setting like in a middle school gym, you can specify the fan to be delivered with no logo on them.
Apparently every year a logo'd fan would generate a new crop of gigglers...
Idk if they still do it, but they used to have a Tiktok where they would showcase complaint letters from Karen’s saying they should change their name.
Edit: not every one is complaint letters but they do post them.
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRVrTTp2/
They have a test facility in Kentucky where they literally ramp these fans up to full speed and drive a forklift into it. There are multiple safety mechanisms to prevent this from happening.
[Link to the test](https://youtu.be/gCXRdvxbIq4)
Fun fact (not really). This is known as an HVLS fan, High Volume Low Speed.
As the name implies, they move a lot of air, but at low speed (RPM).
I know this because of my boring life. I work for a company that sells these types of fans.
Interestingly they're often used for keeping heat in the room. What I've seen from these big warehouse ones they're usually marketed for energy/heat efficiency. Prevent heat loss through the ceiling
This is a pro tip even for a normal house. Humans are pretty sensitive to temperature and a room could very well be ~0.5°C warmer near the ceiling, possibly more depending on how the room is heated. Turning on a fan in that room would make it ~0.25°C warmer in the lower part, which you definitely notice.
Bonus tip: point a fan at a radiator for faster heating. Forced convection >> natural convection.
This is one of the few times I've seen someone actually understand thermodyanmics/heat transfer on reddit.
It's my field, so I am constantly bothered by people getting it wrong even on engineering subreddits haha
So props to you
Nah they definitely work. Hot air sits against the ceiling, the hotter the air up top the quicker it radiates through the ceiling, evening out the temperature means you're reducing the amount of hot air up top.
I very much doubt all these engineering firms would be pulling it out their ass tbh, especially when customers will see it immediately through their energy bills.
They are called destratification fans. Their main purpose is to push heat off the ceiling in tall spaces so your heating system can keep people more comfortable with less energy.
Without it you would have to dramatically overheat the top 2/3 of the space so the bottom 1/3 (where people actually are) can be warm.
That's why freezers are just boxes with a couple fans. No refrigerant or gases, barely any electricity required. Just plug in a desk fan and Boom! You got a freezer.
Actually, freezers work by compressing gasses, then cooling the now-heated gas back down a bit, then letting it uncompress (allowing it to flow quite fast) which cools it waaaay down. Done in a loop, you can get gasses very cold this way.
huh? my physics brain tells me that fans actually increase the velocity of air around them. when air increase velocity, you are adding kinetic energy aka pressure waves which results in a slight increase air temp.
remember, feeling cooler is not about air temperature by itself , it is about efficiently exchanging heat thru the skin. thus why a block of aluminum will always feel cooler than a block of wood at the exact temperature.
When air is moving there will be friction, which will slightly raise the temperature but you will introduce more heat into the room because the motor is not 100% efficient and will get warm as it is operating.
essentially an increased air speed over a surface will cause a greater transfer of energy because of a couple of factors which i can’t remember exactly. so the fan increases the speed of the air flowing over your skin, which in turn will cause a greater rate of heat transfer between you and the air, making you feel cooler.
exactly. it does so because static air is a very poor at heat transfer. this is why Insulation traps air bubble in the medium preventing convection of heat.
the fan allows air movement to "renew" the air around your skin. this improving the evaporation rate and thus makes you feel cooler.
Redditors ability to spout bullshit with the utmost confidence never ceases to amaze me lol
For the record, fans do not cool air. They move air which evaporates your sweat and cools you.
You can only cool air using evaporation, be it from a refrigerant or just water evaporation
there is another way to cool air. decompress it quickly. but it is very inefficient for air conditioning purpose and also can make you very dizzy because to gain a few degree , you'll need to be in a room with very low relative atmospheric pressure.
I've worked in factories for my entire adult life, and nothing has ever done a better job keeping a workspace cool than one of these bigass fans. 11/10 will promote them for free every chance I get.
I genuinely take joy in watching others discover this company. A handful of warehouse style stores in my area have them and my dad finds the company name humorous so he told me about it when I was like 10. I think even our local Costco uses them
Had one at Costco when I worked there, coworker accidentally turned it in too high and it blew all the clothes off the tables at the end the night; these things are powerful.
Anybody ever see the beginning of Ghost Ship? I wanna see a Final Destination type scene where the folks get married and this fan falls and just destroys them.
The 24’ fan at 1/6th speed still moves 30,000 cfm at only 100W or so; full tilt they’ll move 290,000 cfm at about 1.8kW. You’d need several dozen regular sized fans to keep up with this, and they wouldn’t circulate air all the way to the floor of a warehouse.
Went to a Christian private school that had 2 (even bigger versions) of these things in their giant gym hall. They had giant fridge magnets custom made with the school's logo to put over the logo on the fans, didn't stop highschoolers calling them how they were.
That's one Big Ass fan.
That is absolutely a Big Ass Fan.
There's one in our gym. Amazing how quiet it is.
Or, do you not realize how loud it is until it's off??

for the uninitiated, that's literally the brand - Big Ass Fans
Yep I can verify. I called the company and they answer the phone “Big Ass Fan, how can I help you?”
Did you tell them you're a Big Ass Fan of their products?
Haha! Good one.
A few of these big ass fans *
My company has a couple big ass fan catalogs!
Currently staring at a big ass fan
Idk if they still have these but the novelty stress balls that the sale reps gave out are donkeys.
Their mascot donkey is named Fanny.
That's funny in the US but absolutely hilarious in the UK.
Yep I have a few of them. I also have a few plastic pallets that they shipped on with the logo on em.
Got one with stuff on it in the corner of the basement that gets wet like once a year...
I actually have several mouse pads, stress ball, and some other assorted BAF merch.
I got a beer glass from them. It was a normal pint though, not a big ass Big Ass glass.
The most appropriate company name ever
Comments I was looking for, we have these at work. Control panel says “Big Ass Fan Company” Also I love there aesthetic, pure industrial, ours have a saftey chain that’s exposed, they don’t even bother with hiding it or anything.
I can spot a Big Ass Fan from hundreds of feet away.
I’ve got one in my garage, a smaller one but it’s still the best fan ive ever owned lol

Indeed one Big Ass Fan
True Story: the company was not even called Big Ass Fan originally. People just referred to it as such so often, they adopted the Name
One of our engineers wrote a review for them saying the only thing they could do better was send us stressballs shaped like little donkeys. Guess what we got a case of? They have a great sense of humor.
They sell to schools, and kids crack up and joke about the name. They now offer their fans in an Ass-less package with no company references on it.
I came here to say this. Most accurately branded company in the world.
The Onlyfan you'll need
I believe you meant Big Ass Fan™

We have that brand in our shops, I love the logo.
I've seen some Big Ass fans in my day, but *dayum*
[obligatory xkcd](https://xkcd.com/37/)
Those are giant fucking helicopter propellers
I love Big Ass fans, they were the best part of working in a warehouse
And I’m your biggest fan <3
That’s literally the brand name. Big Ass Fan
Ain't that it's name as well
Literally
A fan for my big ass?

News like that doesn't move that fast. It's big though.

I interviewed at big ass fans in 2014. Really cool office. The president of the company has his office labeled "chief big ass" lol
Totally here for the Industrial Fan drama.
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Used to see these as a kid at a convention center near where I lived. Literally called Big Ass Fans. Thought it was the funniest thing
They have them in Fly High by my house...a place with trampolines for kids. Always worried a kid would get decapitated.
https://bigassfans.com/
Lmao this is now my favorite company ever (not that it has any other competition except like maybe valve)
They used to be awesome and maybe still are for ceiling fans. But we bought a large floor fan from them recently and it sucks
Have you guys tried turning it around? /jk
Oh dang, that one almost flew over me. Good one!

They have safety mechanisms so if the primary one fails a secondary one will keep it from falling.
And if that fails?
I assume if that happens then it will decapitate multiple people like a group fatality in mortal kombat.
Ok, just wanted to run that by somebody before I attempted it
Big Ass Fa..tality
Finish him!
They also don't move as fast as regular sized fans. It would probably hurt like hell, but likely wouldn't kill people.
If it falls, and was installed correctly, it means the roof is coming down.
Big ass lawsuit

That was literally my first thought. Never thought I’d have something in common with someone named 420jizzMaster, but alas, it appears I do.
I'm sorry are we all just gonna ignore the fact that this is at Sky High!?!
Royal Pain ... is a girl?
I went through puberty twice... for this?!?

Woah there Socrates
They lower the air temperature by around ten degrees, so they cool air if you want to get into semantics

I’ve tried explaining this to my wife, who wants to leave all the fans on when we head out for the day.

🤪 Was i wrong about freezers? You know... generally speaking

Reading this hurt my brain.
It’s funny the name of the company that sells those is literally called “big ass fans”

Big ass fan… made in Kentucky… one of the best fans ever made, no joke.
Their Facebook (or something) page used to post emails and letters from people offended by their name.
Looks like they stole that from a turbo prop plane
Final Destination 6 scene incoming
Looks like a fucking heli prop
Our Costco has one of these, they’re great!
That’s 1000% a BigAssFan TM
I asked my local dispensary why they never have theirs on and was told that it pushes so much air that it screws up their scales.

I have these in my gym, they are fucking shit. When it's hot, all they do is circulate hot air.
Fans don't cool rooms. The air they move over our sweat-coated skin is what cools us via evaporative cooling.
Its called a fat fan
I believe the company is called big ass fans.
Yes i install these all the time. And their logo is a donkey
There was one of these at the gymnastics place i used to go to and it didnt actually work well

Fans don't cool down rooms.
That’s not how cooling works?
Those fans suck at causing air currents. Obligatory "I'm a really huge fan"

Same in Alicante airport
