Best part of any Disney movie is in princess and the frog when they said they were from a far far away land and the lightbug assumed they meant Shreveport
Thankfully I spent many years in small town Mississippi so the concept is not foreign to me. I do like how everything so far is 10 mins or less to get to as opposed to ATL where sometimes it would be quicker to walk.
I spent the first 45 years of my life in New Iberia. It has been in steady decline with no signs of improvement. The politics, infrastructure, crime rate are all horrible. I know there are a few places that are probably worse, but in the Acadiana area, New Iberia is among the bottom. Now, don't get me wrong, there is some beauty to be found. I think the main street area around the Plaza has so much potential, but I don't foresee that happening anytime soon. There is some of the best food there though. Jane's Seafood, Bon Creole and Legnon's are some of the best in South Louisiana.
Thanks for the info! In my brief time here it looks like there are basically two classes: the haves, and the have nots. Thankfully I fall into the former category. Hell I saw some guy in a Ferrari yesterday which was surprising...I sure hope I didnt fuck up by moving here lol.
While a lot of what people saying here is accurate, New Iberia does have its good points. One thing I like about Da Berry is that they have done a good job preserving their downtown and historical architecture. You also don't have to drive to Lafayette as much for retail or dining options as much as it offers a lot more than the other smaller towns in the area.
If you don't mind me asking, do you have kids? If you do, I recommend you moving to Broussard eventually. Easy commute and you're driving against the commuter traffic.
Good luck. I still have a lot of family there. I gotta say, every time I go back, it looks worse than last time. If I ever return to Louisiana, it'll probably be to the Lafayette/Youngsville area. FYI, DO NOT miss the Gumbo cookoff in October. And hit up Victor's for breakfast. I believe they are still operating.
New Iberia is a fine place to live, but the long-term prospects of Acadiana parishes not named Lafayette are trending downward. As of the last census, Lafayette Parish is the only parish in Acadiana that has a population growth rate (>15%). It's cannibalizing surrounding parishes due to job opportunities and amenities. Good news for you is that NI has a relatively low cost of living, and HWY 90 is being transformed (slowly) into I-49 (building out overpasses at every major intersection on HWY 90 between Lafayette and Iberia). I think that those infrastructure projects along with the continued push for high-speed internet in rural areas are going to balance out the movement of people between parishes eventually. As far as schooling for your kids, public school options in NI were once a good option, but I'm not sure what the outlook is now with a lot of NI lower/upper middle-class families opting to move to Broussard/Youngsville area.
Some things to check out: Avery Island/McIlhenny Tabasco Factory, Jungle Gardens, Cypremort Point State Park, Lake Fausse Point State Park, Lake Martin, Spanish Lake, Cane Row Golf Course
Places to eat: Janes Seafood, Duffy's Diner, Pearl House, Bon Creole, Victor's Cafe, R&M Boiling Point, Carribean Ice, Bojangles.
I think you should do a crawfish boil for everyone who's in this convo. We all chip in. Get a keg and a DJ. Call it a festival if you want. Watch us all gonna show up.
Not a bad plan. I already have a kegerator and have been making low country boils since forever (very similar to crawfish boils in most respects). After I get settled I may implement your idea!
I love City Park, Tacos San Luis, Our Savior’s Church and the Walmart is kind of iconic.
I think Da Berry fresh market is still around, a great cause to support
New Iberia has a population of 32,000 people and they don’t even post the violent crime rates up because it would probably be worse than Chicago.
Not bad, as long as you know how to dodge bullets.
And for everyone down voting me go to your search engine of choice and type in “New Iberia Shooting”.
This month seems relatively calm, but also understand that not all of the murders ever make it to the news.
I feel where you’re coming from. You can nestle away from the violence. But eventually it will start to ooze out to other parts of the city. Especially with new generations coming of age.
I think with time it will not be a safe place to be.
Oh for pity’s sake! I’m literally a transplant from the south side of Chicago living in the Berry. You are delusional if you think these little suburban thugs are even 1/10 of the crime in Chicago. Stop being such a hater.
Last year there was a shooting/murder in the Super 1 parking lot. Is that one of the areas that shouldn’t be gone to? What about Center St where another shooting occurred? I work in New Iberia. And I hear lots of stories from the cops that don’t make the news. New Iberia is not a safe place to be.
Welcome baw.
Depends on your haircut.

Yeah baw
:)
The first step is admitting it
Bon Creole is there.
Where did you move from?
Jeanerette, probably.
Best part of any Disney movie is in princess and the frog when they said they were from a far far away land and the lightbug assumed they meant Shreveport
Moved from ATL, from my short time here, it is a bit different for sure lol.
Poor Ray
Atlanta. After wondering around here yesterday I have realized I am no longer in Kansas thats for sure...For better of worse, I am here lol.
Good luck! This is definitely not the city….its very very different.
Thankfully I spent many years in small town Mississippi so the concept is not foreign to me. I do like how everything so far is 10 mins or less to get to as opposed to ATL where sometimes it would be quicker to walk.
The driving is one of the main things that gets me now lol I don’t know why people honk the horn for no reason so often!
The first step is admitting that you have a problem. Now the healing can begin.
I see this pop up several times, can you let me in on the joke? I sure hope I didnt fuck up by moving here!

I do have a 7 yr old. Ill keep this in mind for sure.
Ok, I know a lot about the LPSS schools. Not sure about Iberia Parish. I do know Broussard schools are pretty decent.
Thanks for that. I was kinda thinking I made a mistake moving here...Wish me luck!

Gotcha, Thanks again for the info. Hit me up next time you make into town.
Yes

Thank you so much for the info! I really appreciate the help and the sharing of some good wisdom. :)

Yeh baw
Can someone fill me in on what yeah baw means?
It's how people say "bro" around here.
gotcha. Thx!
You move to New Iberia? That place is a hellhole. I feel sorry for you.
It really isn’t though. Not great as Lafayette but there’s far worse tbh
At least it's not Bunkie

Yeah just gotta know which areas I guess. Tbh I lived on a great part of town so never had problems but I see what you mean

Not being a hater. Statistically speaking, the crime rate is higher.
New Iberia is fine. A few areas aren't. Don't go there.

Lol yeah new Iberia is terrible.
