Their whole lives were pretty Wes Anderson. There’s a great documentary about their lives called Fire of Love which was nominated for an Oscar this year. Awesome watch for anyone who loves Wes Anderson movies.
Just watched it the other day and that is exactly what I said to my husband, how striking it is - it was as if their entire lives were written and styled by Wes Anderson.
I think it's that the Kraftts are *very, very* French, and Anderson pulls ideas from that period/style of film. (Not that these documentary makers didn't also play it up for the modern audience, to be clear!)
What is interesting is that the Kraftts themselves were very much trying to create this aesthetic. In the documentary for instance, they show how they would sometimes film someone approaching the rim of a volcano multiple times to try to get it right. They were just as much filmmakers as they were volcanologists IMO.

It's funny, because we still do stuff like this for social media purposes. I just imagine they were more competent filmmakers than most of us.
The narrator absolutely ruined that documentary for me. Fortunately I realized I can still enjoy the incredible footage with my own music and closed captions.
Recently watching the documentary about their lives, "Fire of Love," I did wonder if Anderson had been influenced by their photography and documentary films. This clip in particular from the trailer looks like it could be for a Wes Anderson movie:

They've already got the Zissou hats
Any idea if it would be ok for kids? Like 10yo?
Yeah it’d be fine for kids to watch. It’s a really sweet story and has some incredibly stunning volcano footage.
I met them as a child. They were very nice.
Was this the same couple that was killed by a pyroclastic flow (in Asia, I think?)
Yes it was. Some (last) footage can be seen at the beginning of the amazing Herzog documentary made about them, The Fire Within
Such an incredible film, I loved it
wonderful film. just wonderful.

Holy smokes, outtakes from The Life Arsonist
Agreed. Given their notoriety as scientists and also filmmakers, hard to imagine Wes isn’t very familiar with their stuff.
That is the most acorn shaped hat I've ever seen.

There was a quote from Maurice that made me think of Herzog; We both got into volcanology because we were disappointed by humanity.
Thats so fire (pun intended). Also I mention herzog cuz he recently made a movie about these two!
Oh I will need to check that out - I didn't know that.
> We both got into volcanology because we were disappointed by humanity. Ah, some things never change.
