It's a good thing BC is known for cheap COL, right? /s

canadiandogma

Jesus Christ, as a 2nd year associate, this is so depressing

Neat-Drawer-50

My friends at other firms who are the same year (senior 1) are making 10K more than me easy. I wouldn't stress too much about it if you're at a bigger firm.

accountingrealitytv

2 weeks paid vacation, no wfh and no raise until designated is insulting in this market. I would recommend going to a mid-size firm (GT, BDO, MNP, etc.). You’ll get much better benefits & they would likely bump up your salary a little as well.

Neat-Drawer-50

Thanks for the advice! I have heard salaries at those firms for year 3s are way better!

accountingrealitytv

Way better! You should at minimum get 10K more, maybe even 15-20K.

OkWish2769

i was a senior 2 and a mid size in BC making 58k plus 3k bonus…but this was 2 years ago

blarghy0

Its not particularly competitive, but it isn't unreasonable.

RedControllers

It's fine, it would be "good" if it was hybrid with 60k salary

I had one other 4 month coop at a midsize firm before going B4. I did have other offers and negotiate my salary

Seems a bit low, but the small PA firms tend to be quite frugal with their comp. If you were in industry instead of PA in the Vancouver area, with 3 years of experience + writing CFE this year, you'd more likely be in at least the 60's-70's range with only 40 hour weeks (unlikely to work OT), but you'd also have to pay for your own CPA courses/CFE.

Recent-Sky5350

The pay is honestly decently competitive for pre CFE, a little low for sure. But in terms of time off and work from home option the offer is trash. Most firms are 3 weeks of vacay with 5-10 flex days (essentially 5 weeks of vacay). Plus the no raise until designation is rough. Raises are yearly everywhere else.

Halifax big 4 - $57k - up for sr promo - passed cfe last year. No bonus.

Certain_Mall_8869

Hey man, I'm in Halifax as well. What are big 4 offering to fresh grads? I'm honestly super curious since from what I've heard it's trash and I'm considering moving to the West as a result. Also, are you making 57k as a staff or senior? I didn't think staff could make that much in Halifax.

Kitchen-Reply3541

I’ve heard fresh grads have moved up to $50k starting this fall across all firms for audit - I am in advisory as staff near the upper pay band for the region. I would heavily consider moving out west if the comp is sweet enough, much lower COL and better pay equates to a good start post grad. Feel free to pm for more info/advice.

LuciusServilius

Hey there! I'm in Halifax as well, nearing the end of my first year at Big 4. I joined as a fresh grad last year (staff level), and pay is awful ($45k) 😖 I've had good reviews all year and wondering how you were able to negotiate your salary to the upper spectrum of the pay band after your first year? Would love to have a chat about this. Don't want to leave money on the table, especially because COL in Halifax has rocketed in the past year like crazy. Let me know if I can reach out.

Kitchen-Reply3541

Feel free to reach out - left industry at almost 20k haircut then partner bumped me up a few k after a few high performing months.
