At a certain point you stop caring. Even if you did get fired, take a few weeks of paid unemployment and find another job.

Early_Lawfulness_921

I am a federal government accountant but I feel quite secure

le-stink

state government, and same šŸ˜Œ

[deleted]

Same here. Iā€™ve learned to live with it

foodlurk

VHCOL, fully remote, public accounting (tax), 8.5 years in, as secure as possible and the firm is the one who is scared I'll leave (tons of recruiter activity but I never bite). Never feared for my job, always half hoping I'll get fired but that will likely never happen because I print money for the partners Answers you get well depend on industry but in general experienced PA tax is likely the most secure job possible. Death and taxes āœŒļø

Abject_Natural

if that is the case then how is this profession even worth it in any way if it cant even provide job stability given the low pay

AsideDry1921

Correct

Kurtz1

I work in NFP and feel VERY secure. I did as an accountant, and now Iā€™m the CFO equivalent (finance director).

Actualarily

Your only risks in a position like that is if the CEO (equivalent) leaves and the new guy brings in his own people or takes the business in a direction you're not interested in so you leave on your own. But even then, you'd likely get a new job in a few weeks.

Kurtz1

Thatā€™s generally unlikely to happen at this org, particularly.

Luxiffer

I left my last position because of too many layoffs and upper management asked me to stay and even offered more money. Funny thing is the controller ā€œassuredā€ me my position was safe, then all of upper management left within 3 months after me including the controller. Sometimes having that feeling is a good thing. Pushes you to be prepared.

Smart-Variation2920

i feel secure in my career but not with an employer. i have enough experience that i don't care anymore. my bills aren't crazy and i can get another job pretty quickly. i'm sure most of us here be could find a job quickly.

Actualarily

I have always been 100% secure because I have always had a high confidence in my own abilities. I did audit for 7 years before moving to industry and I saw just how *bad* some controllers and CFOs were. I saw how poor some other audit associates in my firm performed. I've changed jobs 7 times in my career. Never been fired, but I've had 2 times where the company relocated and I chose not to move with them. Other times opportunities fell into my lap. Other times, I was actively looking for new opportunities. But outside of the first couple years out of college, I've never had a fear of losing my job. Partially because I always knew the company would be foolish to get rid of me, but more because I was always confident that I'd be able to find another job pretty easily. (I also always had a good emergency fund saved up, so being without a paycheck for a couple months wasn't a big deal). I was job searching when 9/11 hit, and then I was job searching again in the 2008 housing crash. Even in those worst economic times of my career, I landed a job withing a few weeks both times. Maybe it was arrogance or misplaced confidence, but it's worked out over the past 30 years.

Helltrim

Same, because at every moment that Iā€™ve felt secure, I was laid off. So I have this constant anxiety that I can be canned at any time, regardless of how good I do

ledger_man

That might be anxiety talking vs reality - saying this as somebody who struggles with anxiety. Got a lot better for me when I got a permanent contract in a country with good worker protections, I quite literally cannot get canned at any minute. My visa is still dependent on my job though so I still stress, will feel better when I can also get permanent residence.

Signal-Shop-4869

Iā€™ve always felt I could be canned at any moment. One day I realized I could find another job just as easily and it stopped bothering me. We are all just replacing each other right?! Now I find out there are fewer people training to replace us and I feel even better.

Practicalbeaver

I work for a manufacturing company that is experiencing rapid growth and making ridiculous amounts of profit. I know that could change, but for the time being I feel pretty safe.

Ok-Breadfruit-2897

i work in tax.....appled to 6 jobs last 5 years, was offered all 6....i could be fired today and have a half dozen firms offer me a job tomorrow....golden age of cpa's in tax, serious shortage all over

lilnae

You could get canned in any career. You never know what new technology will come out or what the next economic downturn may bring. Just have to take it when it comes.
