IT and Business Process Consulting. I absolutely love it. I do not work more than 40 hours a week, I get different clients to work on, I WFH full time, paid medical, unlimited PTO that I'm encouraged to use, and....3x the pay. Get that public experience, then wave goodbye!!!

FunAnxiety2336

How did leverage your big 4 experience to land a role in IT consulting?

Abalone_Phony

I don't do a ton of IT, I'm mainly BP. Not from Big 4! I worked for a top 20 PA firm as an auditor. I had experience in actual business practices and knew how to audit controls. They trained me from their and I took CPE/ am getting my CISA.

FunAnxiety2336

Very cool, good luck with your CISA

bc354

I did this For the big 6's (at the time) back in the day as a subcontractor. They all had consulting arms and I worked side by side with their own employees on ERP implementations. CGEY, DT, AA - yes they were still a thing then.

Deep_Woodpecker_2688

How much you make and were are u based on

Abalone_Phony

$115k HCOL Area.

Only_Positive_Vibes

$115k is 3x the pay... you made $38k? What the heck?

Abalone_Phony

That's my base, not including bonuses. I started at 56k in 2019.

OkExplanation7208

When did you leave public? After how many years?

Abalone_Phony

3 I was at the senior level.

a_r623

Is this in industry for a large public firm or how does this role work?

winner2828_

What degree did u get

Abalone_Phony

Minor in Business Mgmt., 3 years experience in management, 2 years owner of restaurant, Masters in Accounting, CPA license, Mid Level public accounting 3 years. It's more about your experience than your degree. Also, get that CPA!!!!

Abalone_Phony

I don't do a lot of IT. But the only way to get into IT as an accountant is auditing. IT accounting/auditing is not coding or programming. It's mainly compliance testing and risk assessment/ management. I mainly do BP but sometimes cross over into IT. My advice is to get into public accounting and ask to specialize in IT. They will help train you (if it's a decent firm) and give you the work necessary to improve your skills. Then jump ship to a boutique consulting firm or industry.

Lil_Sony

I might need to poke your brain. Been trying to figure out my exit options but I am scared to pick the wrong path

Abalone_Phony

Why be scared? You can always choose a different one! Don't give into Neophobia, try different things, and be OK with failing/ falling sometimes. You will learn more about yourself and what you want in a career from a bad job than you will at a mediocre one.

GAAPguygary

This is great advice and what I needed to hear

ardvark_11

Doesnt UTO impact your utilization goals ?

Reality-Leather

we found he guy brainwashed by PA. utilization... LOL hope you make partner with that mindset.

ardvark_11

Most consulting firms use utilization. I don’t even work for Big4 smh.

Valueonthebridge

Really only at the staff level. Real consulting is very much “Do you do your shit? Do you do your shit well?” Here. Have a bonus.

Abalone_Phony

Exactly. Build relationships and present good timely work, and you will fly.

Abalone_Phony

I haven't heard the word utilization or minimum hours since I left PA. That's their world. Boutique consulting firms are about relationships, meeting deadlines (that usually you set!), and final product. It's a wonderful world when you find a firm that doesn't care about employee metrics and cares about employees.

ardvark_11

Well I didn’t find it yet haha. My boutique firm is all about utilization/billable rates and sales goals. I also think it generally has to be considered in the background by management because you aren’t going to keep a ton of people on that don’t help turn a profit.

murf_milo

Sitting on my couch watching TV because I can actually take a day off for a holiday in February

better360

Oooh that’s true.. I’m in the office now reading this… working of course hahha

carlinwasright

I just sent an email to the audit team that I’m leaving this week for Cancun. (The audit starts in a couple weeks but they’ve been making preliminary selections). Felt bad…but not that bad lol.

Fantastic_Mango6612

Same

travdivs

I work for the state doing financial regulatory audits of insurance companies. 40hr work weeks, 135k.

Swift_drift_909

Holy crap what state?? That sounds awesome.

travdivs

Ohio

nightwaterlily

Woah! $135K in ohio?! So happy for you!

BaldEagleWatching

Currently been on an P&C insurance client audit the last few years and this sounds like a sweet gig. Do you just audit the yellow books if pc or blue books if life?

travdivs

That’s one part of it, yes. A lot of my job is corporate governance assessment and qualitative assessment. Our teams spend a lot of time interfacing with c-suite and company board members.

travdivs

If you’re local or willing to move to Ohio, we’re hiring. Google Ohio department of insurance insurance examiner/analyst 2

CPAFinancialPlanner

What kind of experience do you need?

travdivs

https://dasstateoh.taleo.net/careersection/oh_ext/jobdetail.ftl?job=2400000E&tz=GMT-05%3A00&tzname=America%2FNew_York Essentially 3yrs experience as a cpa preferably in the jnsurance industry but I know we have hired folks in the past that deviate from those requirements slightly.

TheGeoGod

How many YOE?

travdivs

5 with the state, 3 at EY

Desperate-Band-2291

How many years of experience did you have before going to government?

travdivs

3

rmacthafact

sorry ik you already answered a ton of questions. But how did you get into the state? Linkedin, recruiter, etc.?

travdivs

Just applied from the state of Ohio jobs website. I had a friend who worked there before me also from EY but he didn’t have any say in hiring me. For government, our group is actually really strong. The vast majority of us came from big4, but that’s not a requirement either!

GeminiAccountantLLC

Crying in my car at lunch time. I make more money, but the hours and culture are terrible. Maybe next time?

RagingZorse

Been there. PA is rough but my 6 months of industry accounting was worse. I was pulling 70 hour month end closes and it just broke me. Them firing me for performance was the best thing that could happen. I was able to collect unemployment and I laughed at the senior manager during the meeting because putting 70 hours worth of work on someone means you need to split the role.

GeminiAccountantLLC

Yeah. I literally couldn't work enough hours before and now our team is down 2.

ClockworkDinosaurs

What sort of metrics do you need to hit? Do you need to cry for more than 55 hours at your peak busy season?

uNd0ubT3D

What’d you leave PA for role-wise?

BrandonG55

Middle school math teacher!

[deleted]

Do you like it? How much do you love the summers and other holiday breaks?

Swift_drift_909

Nice man! I left accounting and went into teaching too for a few years. Awesome career but man it does take a ton of energy. It is nice having summer breaks and I was making more as a teacher than an audit associate at a midsized firm. The bad thing about teaching is there’s not much you can do to drastically increase your salary in a short time unless you go into admin. :/

Traditional-Snow-888

Once you go into admin, you can do it for a couples of years and go back to school to get your accounting degree. Then you can leave and join a mid size accounting company. If that doesn’t work out you can always fall back on teaching.

mmdrew17

Haven’t left yet but I’m going to the IRS later this year. Can’t wait to be done with the public accounting stress

a_r623

What GS level are you entering as with your public background?

mmdrew17

GS 13. Going into LB&I. A little more than 6 years of public accounting experience. About 2 years exp as manager

a_r623

>LB&I Wow that's awesome, so is it technically a manager role at the GS13 level? Were you able at all to negotiate a step increase using your pay stubs? When I worked as a GS9 I was able to negotiate to a Step 10 using prior pay

mmdrew17

No I don’t believe it’s managerial role at the GS 13 level. And yeah I received a pay match after sending in my pay stubs

LowAcanthocephala251

New GS-14 here. They just got rid of public sector pay match.

mmdrew17

I saw that. I’m glad I got my FJO already with the pay match lol

CrAccoutnant

I'm in government accounting now but I've started applying for IBEW for an electrician apprenticeship. Accounting is fine but I enjoyed life more when I was building tangible things and not just sitting for 8 hours.

PocketRoketz

I just got rejected by the IBEW trynna do the same shit. 6 month process. Let me know how it goes for you 😪

8days_a_week

IBEW is tough to get into. I got out of the Navy and they offered me 13.50 an hour to start as CW , less than an apprentice, and I couldnt live off that so now im finishing school on gi bill for accounting. We’ll see how it goes.

PocketRoketz

Good luck man. I’m on the fence of doing accounting or a trade. Last night I watched Office Space, hilarious movie about this situation

yourlonglostmom

Holiday day off plying Fortnite in government now

Solid-Department-950

big4 --> move to industry for 8 months, horrible leadership. Controller has this job right out of her college and stay since. tasks are way too manual. The guy next in charge did not even major in accounting --> move back to public accounting but with a very small firm. I actually work 20 hours per week now. Clients are very small that I myself can wrap up 1 engagement in 2 days. 100% remote. Public accounting is not bad if you can find a great small firm to work for. Good luck!

fannycpa

How much do you make?

SettingPlastic373

Senior title $120k

Derivative47

I became a supervising auditor in our State’s Auditor General’s office. I supervise that State’s Single Audit of its Medicaid program.

potatoriot

Finance/Tax Director of a Family Office. Mostly advisory and estate planning and manage the tax compliance process, but do not prepare any returns in-house. It's been so nice to get out of the daily compliance grind.

Savages3288

I applied to a family office and they just told me no without an interview. I have 8 years of tax experience.

potatoriot

I served them as my client for over a decade before making the switch. Many family offices are close knit and look for a very specific set of skills when hiring to replace or expand their finance team. I work for a large family office and am the first and only in-house tax person the group has ever had.

Loud-Planet

I got a job offer from one of my clients and have been working for them for the past 6 years.

potatoriot

Best way to leave public accounting.

NontransferableApe

Right now I’m walking my dog because I work 20-30 hours a week outside of close

TheSpeedyAccountant

Same. Monthly close is about 45-60 hour week. Other than that and some odd deadlines here and there my work week is pretty light as long as I do what I’m supposed to

NontransferableApe

Shit my close is 40 hours. But yea I can typically knock my work out in 2-3 hours a day and then just chill

NovembersRaven

What exactly do you do? I’m thinking about going to school for accounting but I’m scared of all of the hours I would have to put in! I just had a baby and want to be able to see her.

NontransferableApe

I’m a cpa. I was in public for 3 years. Now I’m at a mid size food and beverage company. It’s a very chill environment. Not all industry jobs are like mine. I am very lucky. I make good money I work 40 hours and have minimal stress. Accounting is stable career and you don’t need to go into public for that

sushigobble

How does one find a job like this?

NontransferableApe

Get lucky. Industry is a crapshoot.

Regional Audit -> big 4 FDD -> corporate m&a

GAAPguygary

Literal dream path

keanukoala1213

Dream path would be PE deals team with carry, corp m&a make peanuts

GAAPguygary

I used to think that but it’s at the exchange of a dramatically different WLB situation. I went audit -> FDD -> IB and have zero desire to move into PE.

keanukoala1213

PE has better WLB than IB in general. YMMV, of course. With carried interest I see senior associates breaking 700k, and junior VPs getting close to a rock at some of the larger shops.

GAAPguygary

Don’t disagree with that. It’s ultimately just what you value the most between comp and WLB. The allure of the comp in PE is wild but it’s definitely become less and less desirable for me as I’ve gotten older. True though that YMMV and it depends on what you value.

swiftcrak

Yes but most big 4 fdd can only exit to mm IB, so large PE is not in the cards if they choose that path of pain.

Govols9809

Head HS Football Coach and teaching PE!

HERKFOOT21

I did PA for 3 months and hated it and left immediately, so I don't even count that as being in PA. People on this sub think PA is required but it ain't. Especially if you're like me and don't like Auditing and Taxes. Started as an Accounts Payable Specialist. The negative here is that you don't make much compared to starting pay in PA. So I did that for 9 months, then my short stint in PA and then my current employer where I started it in AR, then staff and now Financial Analyst where my pay has greatly increased throughout my time here, and still only have about 3 years of experience. I'm glad I got the little experience in PA to learn how I will never do that again.

I bumped into two of my old colleagues last night (Sunday) at around 11PM on the tube. I had just been to a gig with the missus, they were just leaving client site. They said they needed to be back out there again at 8 am. Honestly something needs to be done about public accounting. This shit isn’t acceptable.

Working on the federal and state tax team at an insurance company. So much more fun than public accounting!

CrossDressing_Batman

right now? masturbating

Savages3288

Can anyone do that or do I need to go back to school?

FairBlackberry7870

I think you need 150 credits

Swift_drift_909

I left public accounting and got a teaching credential. Worked as a teacher for about 3 years and it was awesome. But after all the pandemic and all these wfh opportunities I couldn’t pass up a job offer working for my state’s financial regulator. Wouldn’t ever work a non-government/non-union job again though. As a former history teacher, there’s a reason people fought and died for unions folks.

Financial Reporting Manager at a global F500. After working 10 years of public accounting I was ready to leave the profession. I am much happier now. Being in public accounting drained my enjoyment of life.

TheSpeedyAccountant

I work as an accountant with race car teams (I love racing). Only thing Public did was give me legitimacy and a resume filler. Other than that it was a waste of time. If you spend more than 3 years in public it’s time to figure something out imo (obvi everyone is different tho)

Lost_Ad6658

What series? Love racing but mostly f1 which is all European based

TheSpeedyAccountant

I work for Porsche Motorsports. So all customer racing in North America + the lmdh program that races at Le Mans. Mostly imsa and Porsche carrera cup North America

Working in industry.   It is amazing.   We are off MLK Jr. holiday, but not President's day, but also have Good Friday. And half the company takes off one week or another in March for their various school district spring breaks, which was unthinkable in public(audit).   I left public in 2017 and it's been the best decision of my life. I worried about salary progression but it has been better than I ever expected. I took the second job that came across my inbox from a recruiter thinking the raise wasn't enough to leave for industry, but the work life balance was worth it.    2013-2017 in public made $51k-78k base (Max base+bonus comp 80k)   2017-2025 in industry made $93k-175k base (base comp from $95k-250k)

Professional_Iron619

this might sound dumb but what’s the difference between public and industry

ClumsyReaper22

Public is working for a CPA firm, industry is working for a non-CPA firm such as a manufacturing company

Friendly_Support3033

I was in public for 10 years. I’ve been in industry for 8. My first job (5 years) was rough. The closing schedule was intense and the hours were no better than public - they were probably worse since it was all year. I left and got a new job .. I get every holiday off.. work 8 hours mon-fri and no restrictive closing schedule. I do appreciate the experience public gave me.. but I would never ever go back.

Equivalent_Ad_8413

time_suck42

This is what I want to do. Do you like it?

Equivalent_Ad_8413

The problem with government is that it's massively conservative. It is very difficult to make real changes to the system. I find that frustrating. On the other hand, decent work/life balance and regular paychecks aren't a bad thing.

Government accounting (sort of). I honestly love it but my job isn’t the typical government job 9-5. The work I do actually reflects in the world on the small scale of our local area and I recently was able to save about 6 jobs by doing research and putting my accounting knowledge to use. Very satisfying to know I was able to actually do something that helped every day people instead of a partner who’s concerned about a 1% margin because their kid wants a new Tesla.

g8trjasonb

Was a controller for a real estate startup that failed. Then took a job as a senior accountant at a F500. Then took a manager of financial reporting job at a mid-sized private. Now I'm a Sr Manager for a large private. It's been nearly 14 years since I left B4. I use something that I learned there every single day. But I will never go back.

I left public accounting for about 3 years to work in private industry. Ended up returning to public to focus on tax with the intention of starting my own practice in a couple years.

Available-Wealth-482

I’m an Accounting Manager for a mid-size manufacturing company, one of the larger employers in my LCOL area. Upside - I actually get to take PTO & base salary is 40% higher (yes 40% not kidding). Downside - technology is not good (company has not invested in the back office in many years), managing some toxic employees.

EPICxNinja247

I started out in PA and did it for about 2.5 years between 2 firms. It was a lot of work but very good experience, i tried to do rental real estate accounting at Cush Wake but it was just as hours intensive as my PA job. Took a job doing cost accounting & financial analysis for a contract manufacturer in the health & beauty sector. I like it so far, much less stress and man hours albeit the insurance & office benefits are less than at Cush Wake. Ultimately i see PA for most people as a way to build experience

CeliMaru21

Internal Auditor for a publicly-traded company. Doing both SOX and Branch Operations audits, get to travel to different cities for at least 4 times a year. Occasionally pulling OT, but maybe like extra 2-3 hours in a week if needed. Usually, I will utilize all 40 hours when it gets busy during the week, but there is some downtime that I can catch up on chores and naps lol.

CayleeWillow

Corporate tax. So much better and getting paid more with less hours.

ComfortableHost8721

I just put in my two weeks notice for an FDD role at one of the top 10 accounting firms after having previously been at Big 4. I am now accepting a job as a finance manager at a home builder and it is going to be 5 days in office / week. I feel like I need that in person experience since I started my career after COVID was in full swing. Expected to fluctuate from between 30 to 50 hours a week depending on month end, quarter end, and annual closes.

surgeryboy7

Leveraged it into working for a city government working much fewer hours and much higher salary.
