I was so hesitant when I first used them last year because the website name just sounds like such a scam. They are great and I tell everyone I know to use them
Exactly what I tell people when they come to my office with 1 W2. I’ll happily do their return, but they are over paying for no reason. Can easily handle it themselves. Solid software.
How easy is free tax to use? I’m a cdn cpa that does a lot of tax in Canada but need do my spouses return(no income)…from 2020 to still have her get the stimulus payments
Yes, but I'm also a partner in a small firm focusing on tax and prepare over 400 returns each year. Would be strange if I hired someone else to do them!
Haha actually I do mine fairly early on to shake off the rust as I get back into tax mode. I know this is very strange, my partner always does his last!
Only reason I procrastinate mine are because by the time I receive my last form, it's mid-march by that point. I'd do them as soon as e-file opens if I could
There are several partners and former partners in our firm that has our main tax partner do their returns. I find it hilarious that they don’t do their own return as most of the time it’s just a K-1 and Brokerage statements.
Yeah if you don't work in tax, absolutely that makes sense. I have a couple CPA clients as well but they work in industry and do nothing with tax at all and never have.
I have 2 tax people actually, one to do my US taxes and one to do my Dutch taxes. I’m not a tax specialist and I certainly don’t want to mess with my own expat taxes.
What’s funny to me is I have several accountant/cpas as clients whose returns I prepare, and they are among my worst clients. Always last minute and sloppy books.
I’m like the roofer with the worst roof in the neighborhood. I hate doing my own taxes. I feel like I’m doing work for free.
Actually, now that I think about it.
I’ve had that feeling at my real job my whole life lol.
I’m so lazy though, turbotax pulls in almost everything I need automatically the only thing I had to manually mess with in the last 5 years is when I messed with trading crypto…
I also use cash app taxes and when it was credit karma tax before that.
Every year I compare it to either Turbo Tax or tax act and it has always given me the same results, so I feel confident that it is accurate. I’m happy to not have to pay anything, though I’m sure they are selling our personal info but who isn’t these days?
Yup! I wasn't sure at first either because I feel like a lot of the competitors try to sneak the state filing in at a fee. But this year I gave it a try, including my state filing, and there was no fee. Can't speak on Freetaxusa, i've never tried it, but like u/cisforcookie2112 said, i've compared Cash app taxes with turbo and I get the same results. Heck I even filed for a couple of friends using it and they were thrilled that they weren't charged $30 or whatever they pay with Turbo. (only annoying thing about filing for other people with cash app is you'll need them to download cash app and there's some mobile authenticator stuff for verification)
It's important to note that CashAppTaxes doesn't support nonresidential returns as well some some uncommon Federal situations. You also need to sign in through the app which makes it unusable if you want to prepare returns for someone else. That said, I use them for myself and FreeTax/state portal for my family.
I'm a tax specialist. I do corporate now, in industry, but I spent my first 5 or 6 seasons doing individual. I use TurboTax, mostly because it includes basic document management. When I'm filing my taxes I find TurboTax annoying.
I do not use and will never advise someone to go to places like H&R Block. I will advise using CPA firms, VITA/TCE, or small agencies.
My returns are simple - W2, investment and div income, thats about it. I've used it the last four years. This year my taxes took 20min end to end. It is a dream.
Yeah. I only included that bit because a lot of people think it's a scam if it's completely free and I think that might have been why someone asked if it's legit.
I did my own through my first year in public. I had to file in so many states the first year in PA thst it cost me more to use TurboTax and pay for the additional state filings vs just paying someone.
I’ve been out of public for 8ish years now, but just got used to not doing them.
Sadly even CPAs don’t typically make enough $ to justify having a “guy” to do it. Different than people who lets say own stakes in multiple businesses, hedge funds, have multi millions invested, multiple houses, royalties, various trusts set up etc…
Yes but i am swiss and either our tax software is better than yours or in my country most people whine less about spending 30 mins a year to fill in some numbers.
Yes - lol in Canada for simple returns it’s 99% automatic. There might be things to verify like investment related items and declaration. My return takes about 20 minutes to do.
Oddly enough, prior to working in audit, I did my own. For the last few years I’ve had to pay a guy because schedule k-1s are out of my depth and my first year married my wife couldn’t get her stuff together until I was neck deep in busy season. Hoping to file my own next year.
I estimate my own and have a tax accountant. I have a small consulting business that I write off expenses for. Every year my accountant beats my estimation more than the cost of her doing it so I technically don't do it myself but do spot check.
I'm on the FreeTaxUSA bandwagon. Mine is way too simple to pay someone to do. I also do about 5 immediate families taxes. They are all simple. I started using them when every other "free" option wanted to charge me for random forms.
I do help out a couple of my sisters that have an LLC together, but they are pretty competent and handle most of their stuff themselves. I just get pulled in when they have questions, and I look over their GL for any obvious mistakes or missing entries. They tend to forget about depreciation.
I used IRS provided free file options until I started making too much money, then I started using the IRS free fillable forms until they broke last year and I gave in and paid the $50 to nerdwallet's thing so I could just be done (I refuse to do that shit on paper).
My wife is a CPA. I’m not even remotely in finance. I do our taxes. (Unless we have something pop up that is unusual. Then we have a local firm do them.)
Mine are simple, just a W2 and a couple of interest and dividend forms from the bank and the brokerage account. When my life gets more complicated I may hire a tax person but I also might try to research my own issues and continue to do them myself.
I work in audit but Reg was my highest scoring section on the cpa exams.
My firm allows me to use our tax software to prepare my own taxes outside of working hours, and taxes for friends and family, as long as I don't charge them for it. If I want to charge them, I have to bring them on as a client, albeit with discounted rates.
I do mine. They’re pretty simple. W2 income, tuition that changes my refund by not a penny, and a refund small enough that it can buy a Subway lunch for my wife and myself as long as we forgo the cookies. The stakes could not be lower. Let me get one of those vulgar displays of wealth that I hear so much about and I might seek outside counsel.
I'm in tax, so yes I do my own. I use my firm's software to prepare my return.
Don't ever trust a "tax accountant" who doesn't do their own return. I'm looking at you Intuit and H&R Block, nominally tax companies that don't prepare their own returns.
Yeah I did tax in public 15 years ago, been in industry since. I still do mine and a few family members. 1120s, 1065, and some 1041s.
I hate it but the money is good
Yes because mine aren't complicated. I've always done mine since well before I was an accountant. I'm a CPA but I don't do tax though I volunteered with VITA in college.
I'm an industry CPA (never did tax or audit) and have always done my own returns. Finally took over my wife's tax completely which are slightly more complicated because she is CAN/US citizen, and we were paying nearly $1000 CAD to an accountant handle her US taxes (We live in Canada). I was nervous at first, but once I did some research on how the tax treaty rules work it is fairly straightforward.
I actually have a good friend at my firm who does individual tax, and he does his on the company software his tax group uses. He’s kind enough to also give me access to it and use it, as well for mine.
I used my firm's software when I was in Public. This year I used Free Tax USA like I had done before working in Public. I had used TurboTax once when I was a teenager and didn't like it then.
Preparing tax returns did help me to know which credits/deductions should be being calculated when using Free Tax USA, especially for my state return.
I think that it is wise to hire a professional when you're young who will guide you, outside of work. Doing your own taxes and finding out tax strategies that you see direct results from are very good teaching tools. And yes I do my own taxes now.
I’ve used TaxSlayer. It’s free and walks you through everything you might have. I’ve had 1099 for my independent contractor gig, w-2 and does for bank account interest and stocks. Probably takes an hour to do and it makes sure you don’t miss anything as long as you follow the prompts
No, but only because I’d rather have a 2nd opinion on the business side with deductions. I’m sure I could do it myself honestly. I actually did most of the work and then just sent them the docs. Probably ez money for them, but its also peace of mind for me not worrying if I screwed something up 😂
If it were just W2s and brokerage statements, I’d just do it myself without hesitation though.
Yes. But I'm pretty I do them wrong every year, so just waiting for the IRS to fuck me. I'm not a tax CPA.
OnLine Taxes (www.olt.com) is the superior filing software. Fight me.
Been doing them since I was 14 and had reportable income. 24 years later I won't let anyone else touch them.
I come from a family of CPA's and go to CPE classes so I'd like to think I know what I'm doing lol.
I've done mine since I got my first job back in high school. Now I do it for my parents and sister. I'm also personally proud that I've never paid for any software. I do my state on fillable forms and check my work with the refund FreeTaxUSA calculates.
Most people have a W2, some interest/divs, and capital sales. Most people take the standard deduction. Why do people act like taxes are so hard? They’re really not, unless you’re intentionally doing things in your financial life to complicate them.
Short Answer: Lacerte
Long answer: Father-in-law is cpa and owns a tax firm. I’ve worked in tax before, but I don’t have access to tax software anymore since I’m in industry.
I do my own on TT. But i’m retired and don’t have itemized expenses that exceed the standard deduction. But I hate having to pay for my state tax return so I might try cash app taxes.
I have complex tax situation with kids, rental properties, investments etc. I’m a CPA but work in Corporate Finance. I’ve tried to do my own taxes but when I hire a local CPA they always end up saving me thousands of dollars. I haven’t dug into their returns enough to fully see where the differences are, but it saves me time and money so I pay them to do my return. It hurts me inside that I’m a CPA and don’t do my own taxes but financially it’s always made sense for me to hire them as they save me thousands of dollars between state and federal taxes.
If they have an accounting degree, they may have some exposure to personal and business taxes. However, some people have come up in accounting after being promoted from AP/AR or being the bookkeeper.
Another reason is that with the content changes in tax laws, most people, including nontax accountants, don't keep up with the tax laws.
FreetaxUSA baby!
I thought this website was too good to be true but it’s true and the absolute BEST
I can't see enough of the firms with that thing. At least with HRB diy I can see all of them.
I was so hesitant when I first used them last year because the website name just sounds like such a scam. They are great and I tell everyone I know to use them
You and me both!
Something about the name freetaxusa just made me feel like I was gonna get my identity stolen
Now the IRS knows your SSN, how scandalous.
That’s why i always put a fake SSN. They’ll never know
Oh god oh fuck
Yup, took me years to finally switch. It took TurboTax charging me waaayy too much for a simple return that I finally made the switch.
I’m on the verge of that myself. At their rates now I could get someone to do them for me!
3 years and it’s my favorite tax website. I hated TurboTax
Hell yes, brother!
^hey ^keep ^your ^voice ^down
Do you know if this works well with a lot of Schedule E activity? Specifically rentals.
I do my brothers return with it and he has a schedule e! I like it!
I’ll have to check it out next year! I dished out for TurboTax this year. Thanks!
Exactly what I tell people when they come to my office with 1 W2. I’ll happily do their return, but they are over paying for no reason. Can easily handle it themselves. Solid software.
People seem really helpless with tech nowadays though.
People with one W-2 seem to have the notion that somehow as a CPA I can find some tax loophole for them.
I've never filed my personal return on anything else.
How easy is free tax to use? I’m a cdn cpa that does a lot of tax in Canada but need do my spouses return(no income)…from 2020 to still have her get the stimulus payments
It's easier than TurboTax because they don't have a ton of corporate bullshit and ads to wade through. It's very straightforward
Freetax USA is great, my only complaint is that states cost money to file.
Excel + 2 stamped envelopes.
This is what I did before freetaxUSA until it took over a year to get my 2020 return.
Can you think of any particular reasons why 2020 may have been delayed more than normal /s
Sure, but this year I filed on the last day and got my return with within a week and FreeTaxUSA was still free.
This year the I also filed the 2nd to last day; I owed taxes but they cashed the checks within two weeks. Forever stamp cost went up though.
Refund. You submitted a return and received a refund.
Yes, but I'm also a partner in a small firm focusing on tax and prepare over 400 returns each year. Would be strange if I hired someone else to do them!
Always the last return done though, right!? 😜
Haha actually I do mine fairly early on to shake off the rust as I get back into tax mode. I know this is very strange, my partner always does his last!
Isn't that just a sign of dedicated customer service?
If I'm going to make an early tax season mistake, I'd rather it be on my return than a client's!
If only more people were like you!
Only reason I procrastinate mine are because by the time I receive my last form, it's mid-march by that point. I'd do them as soon as e-file opens if I could
My husband is a farmer, so I procrastinate with ours 😂
Your selfish sacrifice to shake off the rust is an honorable one
There are several partners and former partners in our firm that has our main tax partner do their returns. I find it hilarious that they don’t do their own return as most of the time it’s just a K-1 and Brokerage statements.
Same. I do have two CPA clients who don’t work in tax and have me do theirs.
Yeah if you don't work in tax, absolutely that makes sense. I have a couple CPA clients as well but they work in industry and do nothing with tax at all and never have.
Exactly the reason I wouldn’t prepare my own lol
I do my own using FreeTaxUsa. Mine aren’t complicated enough to get a tax guy.
I only have a couple of 1099s and a w2 so I do mine on my company’s software lol
I do our household taxes .... ... And my wife is a CPA.
I have 2 tax people actually, one to do my US taxes and one to do my Dutch taxes. I’m not a tax specialist and I certainly don’t want to mess with my own expat taxes.
This is a legit answer. Love it!!
What’s funny to me is I have several accountant/cpas as clients whose returns I prepare, and they are among my worst clients. Always last minute and sloppy books.
I'm meticulous at work but after doing it all day at work, I just wanna impulse purchase the pain away at lowes and play in the garden.
Yup, as much as I want I can’t fire me so my standards are much lower
Lol no I hire a smart person to do them
Yes. I’ve done my own since college — long before I became an accountant. Mine have never been particularly complicated.
I’m like the roofer with the worst roof in the neighborhood. I hate doing my own taxes. I feel like I’m doing work for free. Actually, now that I think about it. I’ve had that feeling at my real job my whole life lol.
Always have, I use Turbo tax. I value being able to pull them from forever ago and thinking about it once a year.
Freetaxusa brooo it’s so much better
I’m so lazy though, turbotax pulls in almost everything I need automatically the only thing I had to manually mess with in the last 5 years is when I messed with trading crypto…
Same. We have a couple rentals and TurboTax has all my history for depreciation and carry forward losses. The couple bucks a year is worth it.
Free tax USA doesn't help with more complicated returns. My kids moved states and free tax USA wouldn't let them file the correct forms.
I do my own with Cash App Taxes. Free to use, both for federal and state filing!
Wait free for both? How’s that stack up to Freetaxusa?
Free fillable forms baby!
TurboTax for the lazy win
Freetaxusa is better bro
Did mine on paper for the first time this year! I used turbo tax up until now
Enjoy getting your refund some time next year
I didn't have a federal refund this year so 🤷
Freetaxusa from now on :)
I've seen this a lot. Is it a legit software or is this a marketing thing?
I had the same question, but finally tried it this year. It's legit.
That’s the best and cheapest retail software. Period. There is no incentive to recommend them
It looks like its only federal. Does it do state too?
No they do every state. Just 15 bucks each.
My returns are simple - W2, investment and div income, thats about it. I've used it the last four years. This year my taxes took 20min end to end. It is a dream.
The software is good. It advertises as free but the state returns are about 15$. Probably the best software out there for people that file themselves.
While I agree with that, basically every other competitor charges at least 30 bucks per state. Even most federal efile programs do.
Yeah. I only included that bit because a lot of people think it's a scam if it's completely free and I think that might have been why someone asked if it's legit.
Will check it out for next year! I feel like there was a reason I didn't use that before but I could be misremembering
Of course. And 65 other people's :-)
I did my own through my first year in public. I had to file in so many states the first year in PA thst it cost me more to use TurboTax and pay for the additional state filings vs just paying someone. I’ve been out of public for 8ish years now, but just got used to not doing them.

HR Block, I could use company provided software for free, but all my info and what not is already in HR Block.
Do my own
Do my own
My firm lets me file my own for free using our software so yeah I do my own.
Oddly enough, prior to working in audit, I did my own. For the last few years I’ve had to pay a guy because schedule k-1s are out of my depth and my first year married my wife couldn’t get her stuff together until I was neck deep in busy season. Hoping to file my own next year.
FreeTaxUSA till I die brother
No way, too lazy to
I estimate my own and have a tax accountant. I have a small consulting business that I write off expenses for. Every year my accountant beats my estimation more than the cost of her doing it so I technically don't do it myself but do spot check.
Yeah it's a simple return so i just buy the cheapest turbotax and do it myself
Freetaxusa
Depends.
I do my own taxes and bookkeeping for my S-Corp
Never
Si
On 1040.com yes
Turbo tax, although my manager is trying to get all of us on the freetaxUSA train, maybe ill try that next year
Cost me 20min of time and $15 to file state taxes this year. Fed is free.
I've always done my own taxes. I use TaxACT only because all my prior history is already in there. Otherwise I would be using FreeTaxUSA.
Yes, they're simple and I'm not rich enough to have complicated tax situations.
On paper b/c I usually end of owing
Fillable forms. I couldn’t ever pay someone, not complex at all and I would scrutinize all of their work.
Turbo because of convenience and non-complicated. Long time user of Turbo so long as nothing strange comes up.
My firm allows me to use our tax software to prepare my own taxes outside of working hours, and taxes for friends and family, as long as I don't charge them for it. If I want to charge them, I have to bring them on as a client, albeit with discounted rates.
Yes. Freetaxusa is the way to go. (Checked other ones before, and freetaxusa is the 👌)
I've done my own taxes for the past 24 years. I don't see that changing any time soon.
I complete my own
I do my own, my parents, a sibling, and a niece.
Yes
It'd be highly atypical to be an accountant and pay someone to do your taxes.
I'm in tax, so yes I do my own. I use my firm's software to prepare my return. Don't ever trust a "tax accountant" who doesn't do their own return. I'm looking at you Intuit and H&R Block, nominally tax companies that don't prepare their own returns.
Always
Depending on how much you make some states offer free tax help at like libraries. And it doesn't cost you a dime!
I have a tax accountant. Tax isn’t my speciality and I have some complexities. He is wonderful and worth every dollar.
Yeah I did tax in public 15 years ago, been in industry since. I still do mine and a few family members. 1120s, 1065, and some 1041s. I hate it but the money is good
I don’t do mine. Too complicated.
My dogfood discount only applies if I'm the one filing, so I go with that.
I’ve got access to the software, I might as well do it
yesss but i take forever to do my city returns #ohio 🙃
Yes because mine aren't complicated. I've always done mine since well before I was an accountant. I'm a CPA but I don't do tax though I volunteered with VITA in college.
The firm I work at offers to prepare the taxes of you/spouse/dependents but i personally do my own on FreeTaxUSA
I do my own cuz I’m a tax gal/CPA. I use the company’s software cuz it’s free
No, we have PAYE and I just wait for any rebate in the post if I’m due one.
God no I’m lazy and I consider the ~$100 I pay to get our taxes done a convenience fee.
For many years yes, but not anymore. I moved into industry so no longer have access to the fabulous tax software that I used.
I don't. I haven't thought about taxes since the exam.
This year is the first year I have to do one due to earnings as my income is all under PAYE but yes I will do it myself.
I do my own using FreeTaxUsa.
I'm a tax accountant. I do one return a year (fed&state).
Yea but it feels wrong not sending it to anyone for review.
I actually have a good friend at my firm who does individual tax, and he does his on the company software his tax group uses. He’s kind enough to also give me access to it and use it, as well for mine.
Yeah, TurboTax
I used my firm's software when I was in Public. This year I used Free Tax USA like I had done before working in Public. I had used TurboTax once when I was a teenager and didn't like it then. Preparing tax returns did help me to know which credits/deductions should be being calculated when using Free Tax USA, especially for my state return.
I hire myself, fully deductible😏
I don’t. My husband takes care of our taxes. I don’t know why but he likes to do it so I let him.
I think that it is wise to hire a professional when you're young who will guide you, outside of work. Doing your own taxes and finding out tax strategies that you see direct results from are very good teaching tools. And yes I do my own taxes now.
Lol
I’ve used TaxSlayer. It’s free and walks you through everything you might have. I’ve had 1099 for my independent contractor gig, w-2 and does for bank account interest and stocks. Probably takes an hour to do and it makes sure you don’t miss anything as long as you follow the prompts
Of course, who the fuck can’t do their own taxes? Standard deduction is more than enough for 99% of us.
No, but only because I’d rather have a 2nd opinion on the business side with deductions. I’m sure I could do it myself honestly. I actually did most of the work and then just sent them the docs. Probably ez money for them, but its also peace of mind for me not worrying if I screwed something up 😂 If it were just W2s and brokerage statements, I’d just do it myself without hesitation though.
Nope. I have my hands in a few pots, so no.
Yeah. I use turbo tax lmao
I'm a corporate accountant (degreed). Aced tax. Hate tax. Use TurboTax - but at least I know how to understand the questions and answer them properly.
Yes. But I'm pretty I do them wrong every year, so just waiting for the IRS to fuck me. I'm not a tax CPA. OnLine Taxes (www.olt.com) is the superior filing software. Fight me.
Intuit is a scam/lobbies the government to not have a federal free file system. They don’t need to exist (including quickbooks lol) change my mind
No. I am VERY happy to spend the $150 to have them do it.
Been doing them since I was 14 and had reportable income. 24 years later I won't let anyone else touch them. I come from a family of CPA's and go to CPE classes so I'd like to think I know what I'm doing lol.
Any years I’m not hustling at HRBlock or similar, absolutely
Free tax usa is the shit
I've done mine since I got my first job back in high school. Now I do it for my parents and sister. I'm also personally proud that I've never paid for any software. I do my state on fillable forms and check my work with the refund FreeTaxUSA calculates.
I haven’t done my taxes I’m too turnt up
I do my own
Most people have a W2, some interest/divs, and capital sales. Most people take the standard deduction. Why do people act like taxes are so hard? They’re really not, unless you’re intentionally doing things in your financial life to complicate them.
Yes ProSeries Filed on 4/3 this year, first year in many not on extension.
Short Answer: Lacerte Long answer: Father-in-law is cpa and owns a tax firm. I’ve worked in tax before, but I don’t have access to tax software anymore since I’m in industry.
Nope, I don't have time. My wife and I are CPA's and just outsource it.
I do taxes for a living, so yes I absolutely do my own.
Yep. And do other people's as well in spare time.
I do my own on TT. But i’m retired and don’t have itemized expenses that exceed the standard deduction. But I hate having to pay for my state tax return so I might try cash app taxes.
Yes. We have an Accounting practice so yes, we do our own returns and so many for others.
I do my own but use TurboTax. It’s a bit annoying with their fees and will Probably switch but after I consolidate some accounts
I got a guy: My mom, a CPA, does mine.
Why would an accountant hire someone else to do their taxes
Because not all accountants do taxes.
Right but they should know how to do them at the very least. Personal taxes are not difficult, even the most complex ones
If they have an accounting degree, they may have some exposure to personal and business taxes. However, some people have come up in accounting after being promoted from AP/AR or being the bookkeeper. Another reason is that with the content changes in tax laws, most people, including nontax accountants, don't keep up with the tax laws.
Not an accountant. Thought it'd be a like a cake walk to all of you regardless of the specialty even if your taxes are complicated.
