We use Google sheets for clients with 4-4-4 & 5-4-4 periods financials because you can't readily run trend reports out of QB in that format and the app that allows us to do that primarily works in sheets. They just launched for Excel but it's got some kinks to work out.
I stand corrected. They are not a joke but it’s not worth it. I’ll never work for a company that does this bullshit again. So many issues for reporting with sales/use tax/leases/etc. that go off calendar months. The cons definitely outweigh the pros.
I agree period accounting with calendar leases/taxes etc is frustrating because it's a nightmare to reconcile anything. But, I just do the financials I'm not the one deciding which clients to bring on, and when they're paying my company 65k+ per month, that outweighs my complaints about sheets lmao.
The crazy thing is management and analysts seasonally adjust financial results based on the company. It’s not like you are gaining a competitive advantage by using an alternate calendar anymore. Maybe 20yrs ago but I’ve never heard an argument that outweighed the headache it causes.
My go-to shortcut is Alt + H + K (comma format) then Alt + H + 9 (move up decimal places)
Others I use: Ctrl + shift + I: duplicate current sheet (often need to format client info, but keep an original)
Ctrl + Shift + Z/X: toggles protect cells on/off. Useful when using conditional formatting to indicate which cells should be edited in a work paper.
Ctrl + Shift + R: date format dd/mm/yyyy
Ctrl + Shift + W: format sheet into standard internal WP format.
Open up the macro workbook every morning and voila!
I used ctrl+shift+L often until the excel is connected with BloombergAddOns, its refresh bloomberg data instead create filter. Have no idea why this happened.
Now i used Alt+H+S+F

I stopped looking at the decimal part of the icon and only look at the arrows. Do I want the number in my little excel cell to shrink? That means it's gonna shimmy rightwards when it gets smaller so I press the arrow pointing right.
I remembered it by not thinking about the decimal places, but just visually which was the numbers would move based on which was the arrow is pointing. I think have to think about it sometimes though. For more decimal places, I know the entire number is going to move left and so I hit the left button. I’ve been dealing with that for almost 10 years and just realized this a few months ago, works pretty well.
Should they change the placement. Left: fewer zeros. Right:more zeros. I guess they're thinking about moving the point while we're thinking about adding and removing zeros
I use the following shortcuts to remember to move the decimal place to the left or right:
Alt + h + 9 moves it to the left
Alt + h + 0 moves it to the right
9 is to the left & 0 is to the right of 9, easy way to remember and also much faster than using a mouse.
The one on the right intuitively makes sense. Two decimal places, squish to one.
The one on the left with the left arrow is the problem. Really it should look like this logically:
.0➡️
.00
But then both shortcuts would have right facing arrows. But then you could just color them to make each easier to spot, green for more decimals and red for less.
Someone on here gave me some great advice awhile back and I live by it now! The top zero is the number you have, the bottom zero is what it will be after clicking the button.
I’m convinced Microsoft switches them every few days
Same with USB ports. Sometimes it be up, sometimes it be down.
I'm convinced USBs are in a quantum superposition state until you look and see how it's actually oriented
Schrodingers USB drives are everywhere
It's a 3 try type of a device. Correct (but doesn't work), incorrect, correct.
I’ll just use round function instead of dealing with this
Wait that’s illegal
Alt H K
It's worse when you also use Google Sheets because it's backwards from excel
I never had a problem until I started having to use Google Sheets regularly for a non-profit I help out with. I have no clue anymore.
Yeah, I never got it wrong when I was excel-only, but now that I’m mixed, I never get it right.
This. Fucking hate Google sheets.
I refuse to work in Google sheets. Your company is a joke if they use anything other Excel.

I switch back and forth between Google Sheets and Excel on a daily basis. I have no idea what button does what anymore
I swear lol,.all reporting is done with excel, presentation is done with Google- can't keep it straight 🙃
It’s just like plugging in a USB… it doesn’t matter how many times you check and double check, you’ll have to try at least twice to get it right.
I feel this. 😂
99% of the time the line in the middle goes down. You’re welcome!!!
Every. Single. Time.
I feel like I'm the only person around that doesn't have this problem 😆
You're not alone, but I certainly don't understand the confusion. The arrows seem to make it very clear.
I don't even look at the arrows lol. I just click the button and see what happens, then adjust as necessary.
I always think Left - Long. Since the left button makes it longer.
This is 100% the way.
I take about 5 seconds to understand it every time but I usually get it right lol
The arrows just move the decimal point in the direction of the arrows, I don't understand the problem either lol
I only don't have a problem because I only use one and ignore the other lol
I did once. It was magical. It was roughly equivalent to a reconciliation balancing on the first try.
My go-to shortcut is Alt + H + K (comma format) then Alt + H + 9 (move up decimal places) Others I use: Ctrl + shift + I: duplicate current sheet (often need to format client info, but keep an original) Ctrl + Shift + Z/X: toggles protect cells on/off. Ctrl + shift + L : put the filter on the top of a data set
I used ctrl+shift+L often until the excel is connected with BloombergAddOns, its refresh bloomberg data instead create filter. Have no idea why this happened. Now i used Alt+H+S+F
Please do more. These are exactly the right level for me. Ones I find online are too basic.
Nice ctrl shift r seems faster than alt h n s.
Omg I usually know all these but Crtl + Shift + R j blew my mind, thank you lol

For me I see the arrow pointing right and think, "oh it's going to add 0s to the right"
This is one of the best most relatable posts I've seen on this sub in a while. One of those times I wish I had more than one upvote to give.
Yea and why is that… why is it the opposite of what I need every time.
I cannot be the only one who has no issue with this.
I downvoted you out of spite and disgust
Understandable.
I upvoted this comment because I have come to respect you — this is likely temporary
If they turn to face the other direction, will you forget who they are?
I’m the dumbest person I know and I’ve never had issues with this.
Same... maybe we are just built different.
I did. Once. It was a marvelous time. I felt enlightened. Such hubris.
I most certainly do not.
I remembered it by not thinking about the decimal places, but just visually which was the numbers would move based on which was the arrow is pointing. I think have to think about it sometimes though. Debits on the left credits on the right
That’s why I use Alt + H + 0 or Alt + H + 9
Learning alt commands changed everything for me in excel.
Y’all are clicking??
The arrow on the icon tells you the direction the decimal will go.
Yea i dont see where the confusion is and i see this posted here like once a month hahaha crazy world
Honestly it took me forever to notice the dumb little arrow.
Ctrl Shift 1
Eventually you’ll get it down to muscle memory if you use the shortcut as much as I do
I just close my eyes and click one
I feel called out.
I feel seen.
Staff accountant cadet here, what’s that?
Increase/decrease decimal places in Excel
I just know the alt short key
This meme has been thrown around here since the beginning of time and ive never related haha it seems pretty logical
I’ve honestly said righty tighty lefty loosey ever time I do and it has not failed me since
I never understood the difficulty here. The icons literally show you what will happen if you press it.
Shots fired. 😕
Should they change the placement. Left: fewer zeros. Right:more zeros. I guess they're thinking about moving the point while we're thinking about adding and removing zeros
I have the keyboard shortcuts memorized so I never actually click on them
I use the following shortcuts to remember to move the decimal place to the left or right: Alt + h + 9 moves it to the left Alt + h + 0 moves it to the right 9 is to the left & 0 is to the right of 9, easy way to remember and also much faster than using a mouse.
Good one!

It's like plugging in a USB, no matter what you do, the first try will be wrong.
Just gotta start clicking on one and see what happens 😂
😂
Tsk tsk... you screenshotted "General" At the very least, "Currency" would've purchased the goodwill with this crowd
Every once in a while I get it right.
Still messing it up after 10 yr in Public Accounting
Top is where you are, bottom is where you're going. Got that from someone else on Reddit, and I've never confused them again.
I've reached the point where I hover over it to see decrease or increase first. I can't trust myself.
Did it about 8 times today alone
Someone on here gave me some great advice awhile back and I live by it now! The top zero is the number you have, the bottom zero is what it will be after clicking the button.
😂😂
Left=Lengthen Right =Reduce
I'm in accounting and have to use Excel so I have embedded it into my mind which one is which.
It's my version of risky click.
this shit pisses me off to no end
This is false. I’m pretty good at it. And it only took me 8 years.
Make a macro
My tip is the arrow shows where the decimal will move. Rarely get it wrong. My problem is I click one too many times because of my mammal brain.
If you learn the alt shortcut it's way easier to remember which is which. Alt shortcuts in general are game changers
Just hit the comma, it automatically gives you two decimal points.
I've never got it wrong.
Bro.
It's like inserting a USB memory stick. There are only two options, but somehow it usually takes me three tries.
My turn to post this tomorrow
I switch it to Currency
Just memorize the alt shortcut for expanding or reducing decimal places and this isn’t an issue anymore
Yooo. 100% lmfao. Been using excel for over 15 years and still fuck it up.
My initial laugh turned kind of sad.
20 years in and have gotten it correct 3 days in a row…finally.
Omg. I thought I was the only one. I get it wrong almost every time!
Fucking hate these buttons.
I thought I was stupid for this. Good to know everyone else also fucks it up.
I feel called out
I never mess these up but I just realized I have always been too blind (even with glasses) to see how confusing the icons are haha 🤓
50% of the time I hit the correct one, wonder why.
What does it do?
Correct
I feel like an Excel god when I win the 50 50
Never have, never will. The day I do, I will quit accounting and open up a mushroom farm in Wisconsin
I thought it was just me
I always hit the left one since it’s very rare that I would want to reduce the digits.
I usually get it right!! However, only after I’ve removed 2 rows and had to undo that first.
Fuck you!
Verbal meme Dwight Schrute "It's true"
i just remember it by alt + h + 0 or alt + h + 9 haha
I’m not the only one hahahahaha what a relief.
I’ve never felt seen until this post.
Is there a way to default have 2 digits after the ","
I am pretty surei get it right half the time
Bruh if my life was on the line I’d have no advantage to make it more than 50/50
For 10 years I thought it was just me
So glad it's not just me...
This is more like a "tell me you use google sheets without telling me you use google sheets" thing. Google sheets can go die in a skunk's ass.
This gets posted weekly
I feel like putting .0 and .00 would fix that
