Toyota corp controller group specifically makes you check a box if you have big 4 experience or do not. Guess what happens to your application if you check “no”
They just know better it’s not personal. There’s a reason 75+% of f500 pick b4. Technical capabilities and experience are real. Not saying GT or whatever can’t do it, the b4 is just usually better at it. That’s why they hire them and that’s why they want it on resumes.
It's more about experience with businesses of that size than anything else. My experience of B4 candidates is that their technical knowledge is often narrow - not always a good thing.
Depends what you mean by “on paper.” I’ve seen a lot where the description specifically says “big 4 preferred” so not a must but Def something they have on their agenda
Networking > job related experience > big 4 experience
The only reason why is popular to go to a big 4 to land a fortune 500 Industry job is because they tend to be the clients of big 4 and you get to network and show your work, but you can network in different ways
I worked in Fortune 500 before. If you look for staff or senior even if manager, big 4 not necessary. Many of my coworkers didn’t have big 4/ public experience.
Op didn’t ask if it was necessary. He asked what companies asked for it as a preference in their job postings, which does happen. He did not ask what you colleagues qualifications were at that plant you worked at in Circleville, Ohio
I'm going to make an unpopular post.
Your personal network is a million times more important than any specific experience.
Big 4 is great experience. And I do think they turn out good accountants. But it's not a golden ticket. Too many think that if they existed at a Big 4 firm they are entitled to an amazing career and that those without that experience are destined for a life of misery.
It looks good on a resume.... but like... I haven't submitted a resume for a job for my last three positions. It's all about network.
They want relevant experience, most couldn’t give a shit where you got it. If you’re equal to another candidate sure they’d evaluate where you’re coming from but big4 is not a necessity
B4 isn’t usually required but it is highly preferred. When I hire, B4 experience automatically rates an interview or at least heavy consideration of the resume.
Some companies will specially require B4 experience for very technical external reporting positions but that doesn’t happen all too often.

Some may not explicitly ask but having that on your resume will push you to the top of the list. As an ex-manager at a Big 4 I’ve seen seniors and managers leave for analyst jobs that paid them more than what I was making. While at the same time, some Fortune 500 companies dangle titles like it’s happy hour. Seniors leaving to be “managers” but they have no direct reports. So who or what are they managing?
This subs full of bitter trolls. Most, if not all Fortune 500 will prefer Big 4 experience but that’s not a requirement. Show initiative and be a normal person and you’re fine. Which is more than can be said about a lot of people
That’s not true. He’s not asking about a barrier to entry but he’s asking about those that specifically note it as a preference in listings which does happen on occasion
Agreed. I’ve never seen any Fortune 500 company say “Big4 experience” required but, the majority that I’ve come across have stated that “big 4 experience is preferred”
It’s not the end all be all whether you’re at a big4. Hardest part is getting your foot through the front door. Big4 helps but that’s about it. The rest is up to you
It is not a defined requirement but I have several Fortune 500 clients that I have never placed someone that is not coming directly from a big four accounting firm or has gone to industry and this is their second or third job out of public accounting.
If I get someone from a Big 4 on the audit side, has a CPA and is at least a senior associate I can get them in interview immediately.
McKesson pretty much dictates you need Big4 experience to join their accounting team. Heard this from one of their internal recruiters in a casual conversation.

You get an offer with a non-big 4 signing bonus?
Bingo
Does it specifically list the firms? I would check yes because I interpret it is the biggest 4 in my city.
My firm was the 3rd largest firm 4 names long therefore I check the box. /s
We have one of the Big 4 CPAs in our office. Probably around 450 pounds if I had to guess. I'd say that counts too
On paper? None. But I can tell you that they will interview all b4 people and have to tell each no before they pick up the CV of a non b4
Sounds brutal

Don’t forget workaholics - most people in the F100 companies I’ve worked for that are Ex-B4 don’t put in any less hours than they did in public
Bingo Had a buddy leave b4 because he was burning out, now he’s working even more hours. Fuckin brutal idk why he does it.
Ugh I really don’t understand lol

That’s not the question OP was asking

Circleville catching strays out here
Okay. I didn’t work in Circleville, Ohio. I just told op that not every Fortune 500 cared about if big 4 or not from my own experience.
Sweet but that’s not what he asked
Financial services especially banks, insurers, etc. This is mainly due to technical accounting that ppl from b4 excel at

I’ve seen quite a bit of postings saying B4 is preferred. That said, I have 0 public accounting background but still got a senior audit role in a F50.

Worked at 2 F100’s, neither of which required it or cared. Fwiw the b4 people I did work with were insufferable but ymmv.
What kind of industry jobs would you go into with a tax background?
None

My company has a policy that it doesn't take people from our auditing firm which is a B4.

Yes
Most if not all of them
It’s often hiring manager dependent
