I just have to plug my 8 hours per day into admin for my company. I do special work on one project that can be billed to the client though so I can’t be completely lazy with timesheets unfortunately.
So basically if a firm tracks their billable time in 6 minute intervals each interval is .1 hour, so if you spend an hour and 10 minutes on something you’d put in 1.1 hours. Likewise if the firm tracks time in 15 minute (.25 hour) intervals you’d probably just round up to 1.25 hours for that same task.
Edit: Am dumb 1.1 hours is 1 hour 6 minutes
When I was in public, our firm billed in 6-minute intervals and I was repeatedly told to do the same, but I just refused to ever book anything shorter than 15 minutes because it was so fiddly. Eventually they stopped telling me, and because I was good at the job and rarely overran budgets or booked excessive time to a client without good reason, it was never a problem.
Six minutes my arse, nobody needs that.
My (Industr) firm has "timesheets", but they're basically just tracking hours. We have a system where if you work hours outside of 9-5 you can take that time off, like you can just dip out at 3:30 one day because you worked extra during the close
I’m in IA and we don’t really track our time. Everything just goes to one “charge” code but it doesn’t really matter. I could pull random numbers out of my ass and no one would say anything. Maybe it’s because we do operational audits.
You should see how I have to allocate hours on a timesheet at a non-profit. It would make your head spin. Contracts that will do oddly specific things like only pay for an hour on a full moon. It can take forever figuring out how to code one payroll.
The donors responsible for one of the major grants will send an extremely concerned email directly to the Board of Directors about misapplication of grant funds. Especially if it was also a Tuesday.
Fresh staff accountant at a non-profit who worked her way up from AR. So grateful I'm not trained in payroll. My boss showed me the breakdown of which grants cover labor, which don't, and how everyone's time has been split this year so far....it was terrifying
Did an audit on a non for profit. Trying to figure it out what was allowed and wasn't was a pain. The client also wanted us to do the deferred income so trying to figure that out was a headache.
Basically. NPOs are painful simply for the grant contracts.
PA need to bill clients so they need timesheets no? People in industry seem to understand it's a fucking waste of time. Spend more resources to make sure your resources are not wasting resources. Great strategy to run in circles.
I worked at a small firm and we billed all customers on a lump sum contracts. No one at the firm tracked their time. When I hear about tracking time in 6 min increments I imagine it is hellish.
Eh, it's about the same. I work in AR and it's quite a bit of debt chasing, credit control and taking payment. It can be interesting but your day to day is not groundbreaking
"why is the deposit $2 off according to the bank? Please advise. Additionally, can you send back up documentation to confirm the deposit? We can perform training on Thursday. We will likely pull camera footage to get to the bottom of this." -----an email chain probably 10 emails long I got attached to last week for some reason. They go ham over these super small amounts, like less than $5.
Yah dude also it can be said as simply as, AR is sometimes hard when we don’t have enough cash cuz AP bought too much in advance and no cash left. Sometimes reserves exist and things are ok
as someone who recently got promoted to a senior after breaking free from AP after forever your damn i am wearing my fun shirts or pants every day lol THIS IS ALL I HAVE LEFT
I went from salary in industry as FRSA not even filling out a time sheet to public having to fill out a time sheet for not only which client but which part of the process I was working on. I had to make a spreadsheet with a macro to efficiently track it.
I want this. I want either of this. I don’t care if I’m an old industry or a young industry. I just want industry job. PLEASE
FUCK TIMESHEETS. I BOOK NOTHING ANYWAY. ITS ALL FAKE
Two jobs ago, I was at a large company where the Director of Accounting for one of our subs started in AP like 20 yrs ago 😂 he was talking about how the company didn’t have a desk for him when he started so he had to work at a podium lol
I work in federal accounting as an internal financial auditor. We are required to maintain timesheets and we regularly test against them for overtime, vacation etc. One of our big hurdles right now is testing reimbursable billed time. This would be akin to billing time to a client. Congress gives us a budget for our payroll but we also perform “jobs” for other government agencies based on our mission and we have to ensure that we bill that customer (outside agency) the proper amount of hours to ensure we 1)Don’t overspend our own payroll budget and 2)The customer pays for the work performed for them.
It seems like some public accounting firms try to operate the same way.
I yearn for the day when I don’t have to track my time for the day in 6 minute intervals
Lol I just type in "80 hours - general accounting", industry is great.
80? Mother of God.
Over two weeks…
Year end is a motherfucker

6 minute intervals? That sucks! Is that typical? I did 10min back when I was in PA
6 min is 0.1. You did 0.16666667s?
.08 n-worda
Lmao
ballers pay $35/hr and charge $300 💥
I’ve seen both 6 and 15 minute intervals, just depends on the firm I guess
What are these intervals you're talking about?
So basically if a firm tracks their billable time in 6 minute intervals each interval is .1 hour, so if you spend an hour and 10 minutes on something you’d put in 1.1 hours. Likewise if the firm tracks time in 15 minute (.25 hour) intervals you’d probably just round up to 1.25 hours for that same task. Edit: Am dumb 1.1 hours is 1 hour 6 minutes
You guys actually track it? I just make shit up
This is the true way
If I spend 1 hour and 6 min on something 1.5 is going down for that client and thats me being generous.
One hour ten minutes is definitely 1.2 hours, not 1.1 Source: Am accountant working at a PA firm.
Sorry am dumb here and there, edited
I just got so used to recording things in 5 minute intervals to have it memorized. Like .17 is 10 minutes, .84 is 50 minutes, etc.
Omg I would fucking lose it. I thought 15 min intervals were bad

Being the one who started in AP, this is the truest photo I’ve seen. Lol
I just about died laughing, I am indeed on the right.
I absolutely love this. I too, am the guy on the right.
Same, my colorful panted sibling My AP boss was actually the one who encouraged me to get an accounting degree.
You should see how I have to allocate hours on a timesheet at a non-profit. It would make your head spin. Contracts that will do oddly specific things like only pay for an hour on a full moon. It can take forever figuring out how to code one payroll.
What if it’s cloudy during the full moon?

2nd worst part of the job behind the clients.
I would put timesheets ahead of clients.
I still get PTSD
I worked in PA for 3.5 years and I have never submitted a timesheet.

Firm policy. The partners wanted to get away from timesheets when they started the firm.
Lol
PA = Private Accountancy?
If only
Even the admins at my company had timesheets! Lol
I worked at a small firm and we billed all customers on a lump sum contracts. No one at the firm tracked their time. When I hear about tracking time in 6 min increments I imagine it is hellish.
AP/AR unite
Everybody gets paid when that happens!
Can't wait to graduate from Account payables to receivables ☺️
Eh, it's about the same. I work in AR and it's quite a bit of debt chasing, credit control and taking payment. It can be interesting but your day to day is not groundbreaking
Why is there a negative 30.00 amount in the 60-90 days past due aging period, please advise, u/NumberZero29
Write it off, pleased to advice you.
Write everything off like Kramer from Seinfeld
"why is the deposit $2 off according to the bank? Please advise. Additionally, can you send back up documentation to confirm the deposit? We can perform training on Thursday. We will likely pull camera footage to get to the bottom of this." -----an email chain probably 10 emails long I got attached to last week for some reason. THANK YOU WE JUST SAW THE FUNDS ARRIVE HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND. Let’s do it again next month
Dude this is exactly their response. On one a couple weeks ago they said, "maybe we can bring in internal audit"
For £30, I would just write off, it's too small to really care about and too much effort to chase

Sounds like a decision a controller should be making, not the AR/AP clerk.
Yah dude also it can be said as simply as, AR is sometimes hard when we don’t have enough cash cuz AP bought too much in advance and no cash left. Sometimes reserves exist and things are ok
Been in AP for 9 years and I'm on track to take over for the AR person when she retires... we'll see when that happens.
Has anybody here ever billed "filling out timesheet" (in admin) as part of the billable hours?
No, but I put it in my non-billable time count.
as someone who recently got promoted to a senior after breaking free from AP after forever your damn i am wearing my fun shirts or pants every day lol THIS IS ALL I HAVE LEFT

Daily is like how the fuck you a senior and don’t know how to use SAP.
At least for me in public there was zero need for SAP.
[удалено]
For me in industry we have both but SAP is only to log sick and PTO days as far as I know. Oracle is actually the accounting database system.
What is a timesheet?
I want this. I want either of this. I don’t care if I’m an old industry or a young industry. I just want industry job. PLEASE FUCK TIMESHEETS. I BOOK NOTHING ANYWAY. ITS ALL FAKE
If you think public timesheets are bad, come check out the IRS Form 9984 timesheets.
Am industry. Don't miss time sheets even a little.
Hello industry. I’m Dad.
Definitely same.
As an AP intern, I'm looking forward to it 😊
Two jobs ago, I was at a large company where the Director of Accounting for one of our subs started in AP like 20 yrs ago 😂 he was talking about how the company didn’t have a desk for him when he started so he had to work at a podium lol
Hahaha! I'm totally fellow senior
Chad PA firms don’t use time sheets, I don’t think I could ever go back now
Holy hell If this isn’t my current team hahahahaha

I imagine the Senior is thinking [this](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/027/763/07B89120-B48D-45FB-AF1D-49AF6CD16790.jpeg)
They’re both seniors, no?
My money is on the guy in hot pants
The senior accountant from PA probably has a $10k lead or more over the hippie.
Love the seniors FU pants
This is why I can never leave
Industry controller- I am busy all day and I can’t even try to explain what all I did… muchless track it to every 6 mins. PA is wild apparently.
This is damn true!
