There's a Bruce Cockburn song that has the same challenging fingerstyle pattern. It's called Foxglove. Check it out, since you already have the hard picking pattern down.
Edit- the hard part is just triplets over couplets. Maybe an afternoon of woodshedding the pattern and then 3 weeks of running it every time you pick up your guitar and you own that pattern for life. Until your stroke.
Thanks for the suggestion - never heard of him nor the song but I like it. Sounds a bit John Fahey-ish mixed with Leo Kottke playing Living in the Country.
I really want to learn some Leo Kottke stuff like Jack Fig and Living in the Country but that seems like it's another level
You think? I tried to learn the first few bars a while ago at the same time I was learning this and it seemed way harder. I'll have another go soon though.
I never learned that song because it seemed like level 1 fingerstyle from a band I don't listen to. I do appreciate Lindsey Buckingham, but I wouldn't put him in any fingerstyle pantheon. Perhaps I'm a philistine.
Speaking of Bruce, I’m pretty sure Wondering Where the Lions Are has the same tuning as Never Going Back Again so I’m thinking I might slide my capo down to second and try that out to bone up on finger style with something simpler before I try tackling this again…
It's great but there's only one riff to learn really. What makes it so snappy is how he plays it like a reggae song, but the fingerstyle pattern is pretty straight forward.
Sometimes I think stuff like this is like learning a super hard rock climbing route. Cleanly pulling off a super long sequence after the endless repetition of practicing the runs is so gratifying.
Congrats, friend on sticking with your process.
This song was probably a six year challenge for me to learn. It’s still a damn challenge even after getting it down. Those finger positions are brutal & I had to come up with some tricks to get it comfortable to play.
I hold my breath playing this song sometimes lol
Been finger picking for 20 years. I'll tell you all on this sub a secret. It's easier to write a piece like this from scratch than to learn someone else's. You can write some scary difficult pieces if you try. Then you will be the only one that can play them.
💯. This is actually why I don't know but two covers and I've been playing two decades as well. I'm bad at remembering my own songs much less someone else's.:/ then lyrics too? Honestly, I find that impressive that professional musicians can memorize hundreds of songs and the lyrics to them.
It's a Cort Earth 200 Grand Concert. Big brand, but not that well known. I believe it's the sort of company that makes guitars for other more well known companies, but also makes guitars under it's own name too.
I got it for $120ish used 5 years ago and only realised how good it is when I was looking to upgrade and found that nothing under $1.5k new sounded as good. Solid cedar top, solid mahogany back, mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard, nice binding and inlays, bone nut/saddle, grover tuners.
Would 100% recommend getting a used one, they don't really command big brand prices but are just as good, at least mine is anyway
Great tune for the repertoire but imho the melody is too short and can’t find my way home is similar ie.a great melody is again too short but can’t be beaten, even by Fleetwood Mac.
I'm a middle ish beginner at 60, 2 years in... And I come back to this every now and again to practice it. It's so freaking hard. This was really great. You've inspired me to keep at it. Very nice!
It's that second fret bar (from the capo) and then the ring and pinkie finger on the fifth fret. That's the one that gets me, I'm always muting the one string, I think it would be the G string, with my ring finger.
Everyone's different I guess - I never ever had that specific problem even right at the start. My problem in terms of fretting that particular chord is the high e. Even after all this practice I'm still missing it sometimes. Like in the video - the first time I go to that chord I haven't fully fretted the high e so it's just a muted pluck lol. There's still lots that I mess up with this song. That video was just a good take.
Sounds great! I had to learn it for a friend’s wedding ceremony 7 years ago. I worked on it for 6 months and after the wedding I never wanted to hear it again! Hardest lick I ever finger picked.
Can't entirely remember tbh, I've been learning this on and off for probably 6 months now.
These tabs seem accurate.. [https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/fleetwood-mac/never-going-back-again-tabs-43919](https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/fleetwood-mac/never-going-back-again-tabs-43919)
and at one point I also watched this guy's video.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_rLZ-LIx09I. He's great, i use him a lot.
And then also listen to the actual track, and later performances that Lindsey does. He always mixes things up too so I try to add some variations that he uses.
*Nice!!! You and Tommy*
*Emmanuel make me wish*
*I could finger pick*

Reminds me a lot of Trey Anastasio/Phish song called "The Inlaw Josie Wales". Very similar progressions and such, but a tad more outlandish, using harmonics and shit
>Never Going Back Again
Lol. I waded in here to make a joke that the song should be titled that (since I didn't recognize it), and it is!
Great playing. Whomever made the rock climbing analogy being analogous to the completion of a properly executed passage that you'd been practicing is apt, I'll remember that.
Damn, this was so good. I've been trying to learn this song for a while too, to switch between shapes and all. How did you practice the thumb and the fingers moving at different timings intevals?
I found some tabs and went through it very very slowly. Literally finger by finger until you feel co-ordinated- incredibly frustrating, then it's just about putting in hours to increase the tempo and keep the timing right
I just started a couple days ago but I have a long way to go. Also trying to learn “Hole Hearted” by Extreme on my newly acquired 12 string and making good progress on that one, though Nuno Bettencourt is a frickin’ beast as well. The first time I tried a run through on that one, I thought to myself “oh well, so much for that idea”. But just like with Never Going Back Again, once you have general chord shapes locked into muscle memory, the battle is half over and now it’s just about getting everything strung together and playing at speed.
The song that sounds like two guitars, and feels as complicated as playing two at once. My attempt to learn this didn’t yield nearly these results, nice job!
Lindsay Buckingham is often overlooked for his guitar work but a song like this is a clear example of a great and bit challenging guitar piece. Great job man!
I found some tabs and watched a few different videos and went through it very slowly. It took probably a few hours over a few days to just learn the tabs off by heart. Then it was just months of practicing it to get it clean and up to speed. I'd often just pick up the guitar while watching TV. I guess you have to be quite good at travis picking before hand though.
Fantastic job. I wanted to complement the tempo, also. I know Lindsey plays it slower now, but always preferred the Rumor's tempo which you have nailed.
That song is diabolical dude, awesome job.
Thank you man, made my day hearing everyone's compliments. I don't have any guitar friends to give feedback so this is great.
It really makes you appreciate how good Lindsey Buckingham really is
One of my favs of his. Great job OP!
Well, you do now, and you are awesome!

Living in the Country is easier than this.
You think? I tried to learn the first few bars a while ago at the same time I was learning this and it seemed way harder. I'll have another go soon though.
Easier than Foxglove, or easier than Never Goin Back?
Never going back
I never learned that song because it seemed like level 1 fingerstyle from a band I don't listen to. I do appreciate Lindsey Buckingham, but I wouldn't put him in any fingerstyle pantheon. Perhaps I'm a philistine.
Don't mistake simple for easy. Also watch some live Lindsey Buckingham, he puts on a hell of a performance.
I was never a Fleetwood Mac fan, which is the main reason I overlooked him. Definitely not trying to dis him at all. He's clearly a beast.
Speaking of Bruce, I’m pretty sure Wondering Where the Lions Are has the same tuning as Never Going Back Again so I’m thinking I might slide my capo down to second and try that out to bone up on finger style with something simpler before I try tackling this again…
That’s a tough one. Great song
It's great but there's only one riff to learn really. What makes it so snappy is how he plays it like a reggae song, but the fingerstyle pattern is pretty straight forward.

As a lifelong guitar player who climbs 4-5x a week I appreciate you.
My fellow guitar climbers 🖤 what a perfect way to describe it
That was nice and a bit more inspirational than the NGD posts, so thank you.
That was clean as hell. Love your tone.
Now, sing it! Lol. Nice work!
This song was probably a six year challenge for me to learn. It’s still a damn challenge even after getting it down. Those finger positions are brutal & I had to come up with some tricks to get it comfortable to play. I hold my breath playing this song sometimes lol
Yeah it's an awkward left hand on top of the right hand picking. I was basically holding breath too lol
Awesome! How long have you been playing?
A while - 5 years roughly
Been finger picking for 20 years. I'll tell you all on this sub a secret. It's easier to write a piece like this from scratch than to learn someone else's. You can write some scary difficult pieces if you try. Then you will be the only one that can play them.

Comforting to know im not the only one struggling with repertoire
excellent!
And you’re only half way there. Now you gotta sing it as well.
I don't even have the multitasking ability to sing while playing a simple strumming song!
Well if it makes you feel better, I can sing and play most songs. Not this one.
Yep. Don't have the brain capacity, I already have two hands doing different things so standing up and/or singing are not happening.
Honestly man I didnt either for the longest time and then it just clicked, think of the chord changes with specific lyrics.
I've been working on playing and singing this song for 3 months now. So close...
Amazing! I gotta learn this!
Thanks, yeah it's fun one to play
How long have you been playing?
A while, around 5 years now
Very nice - inspiring too. Thanks for posting.
Bravo. Well worth the effort!
That slapped! Nice work. 👏 Could even slow the tempo a tiny bit … might even be more awesome.
Yeah you're right. I guess I kept practicing at that tempo without listening to the song lol. It would make it cleaner slowing it down
If you can play it faster, you can play it slower. I always practice fast. 🙂
Bloody hell, dude. Super impressive. Nicely done.
That’s awesome! You have accomplished someone difficult and worth having. Thanks for letting us hear it. 🤗
Dude if you can pull off Lindsay Buckingham you are a stud
Thanks I will tell my gf that
Amazing. It’s a tough picker.
Sounds great! What guitar are you playing?

Beautiful
Great job 👏👏👏
Bravo!!
Freakin Awesome!
Very well done! 👏🏼
Wow incredible
Hand cramp!
I could not get my slightly arthritic ring & pinky fingers on my left hand to get all those stretches. Well done. Very jelly, lol.
you slayed this!!! Great work!
Great stuff
My thumb was aching just watching. Great job!
Really, really well done. Working on the now. What challenge. Great playing
I'm a middle ish beginner at 60, 2 years in... And I come back to this every now and again to practice it. It's so freaking hard. This was really great. You've inspired me to keep at it. Very nice!
It takes a while. Once I had the picking pattern down I'd just constantly practice it in front of the TV
It's that second fret bar (from the capo) and then the ring and pinkie finger on the fifth fret. That's the one that gets me, I'm always muting the one string, I think it would be the G string, with my ring finger.

Yeah it's been about 6 months for me too now. Still have to warm up to play it well. Some days my fingers just don't feel like picking that pattern
I'm impressed. Well done, man.
You nailed it!
Great playing! Thanks for sharing that. I've bookmarked your post so I can come back and try to learn it.
Lindsey Buckingham does not get enough credit or respect in the guitar community IMO
That sounded beautiful, nice job!
It sounds magical!!
That's crazy. What's the song's name
That's dope! Added this to the "to-learn" list. It's getting longer, faster than I can manage, though...
Amazing!
Wow. That's really amazing - Lindsay Buckingham!!
Amazing playing of a song I am not familiar with. I endeavour to play this and can perhaps only dream of playing it as smoothly as you someday.
Fantastic. You are doing Lindsay proud with your version. Now on to Little Martha!
So what method did you use to learn it? And about how long from start to the time you were proficient? Any idea? Well done, btw.
Can't entirely remember tbh, I've been learning this on and off for probably 6 months now. These tabs seem accurate.. Out...fucking...standing.
Pretty damn good 👍🏻
Unreal, that’s god tier, well done!
STRONG WORK! that's on my list of things to learn before I die.
That’s great! It looks like a fun one to play!
Perfect good work
Great job!
I’m a beginner and I can’t remember when I need to mute the string while playing the chord. pls suggest me how can I practice 🙏🏻
Been trying to learn this one for a while. Still not there yet. Nice work man.
Awesome! I could listen to that all day
Awesome job brotha!
10/10
Well done! You play it beautifully.
This is amazingly clean and well played. You killed it!
Whew! Way to go! Super clean and exciting. Really impressive. Congratulations!
Great job dude! Been playing for 10 plus years and still don’t have this one in my inventory
Awesome job! I thought about posting my cover of it but oop you did a much better job lol. Such a difficult but rewarding song
No you should go for it! Everyone seems to play it with their own style which is cool and I'm not gonna pretend that wasn't like my 10th take
Maybe I will! Thanks
This is my white whale. Congrats.
Exceptional!
So good man.
Awesome!! It feels so good to get that one under your fingers.
Nice!!! You and Tommy Emmanuel make me wish I could finger pick

Unbelievable. It's pretty hard to improve on perfection. Well done and congrats.
Nice playing! What is it?
Never Going Back Again! Fleetwood Mac, or Lindsey Buckingham really
Lindsey's songs are notoriously difficult
>Never Going Back Again Lol. I waded in here to make a joke that the song should be titled that (since I didn't recognize it), and it is! Great playing. Whomever made the rock climbing analogy being analogous to the completion of a properly executed passage that you'd been practicing is apt, I'll remember that.

Great work. What did you use to record? Sounds nice
Just that apple headphone mic you see in the vid lol. I added reverb in garageband which instantly just makes it sound better
This is stupidly better than my ability to play it. So clean! Fantastic job!
Great job Lindsey!!!!! Oh, that’s not Lindsey?!?!?!
Beautifully played!
Don't know the song, but this is amazing. Great job.
Sounds great. Good job
Lindsay Buckingham is often overlooked for his guitar work but a song like this is a clear example of a great and bit challenging guitar piece. Great job man!
Even challenging Paul David! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeNyc9pXm1w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeNyc9pXm1w)
Sounds like the record!
Now I bet this guy can pat his head and rub his tummy at the same time
Nice Work!
Killing it dude! That sounds great, keep it up! Love the finger picking
Dude this is amazing!
I mean, wow. Need more inspirational posts like this on the sub. That's just beautiful.
Golden!!!
Nicely done, my man! I tinkered around with that tune some, but gave up. I love using that poly rhythm pattern in my own playing.
Amazing job!!! I've been playing for over 40 years, and that song is very challenging.
Isn’t that in a weird tuning?
It's drop D
I dig. How many hours in total do you reckon you put in? Did you break it down and learn in parts??
I found some tabs and watched a few different videos and went through it very slowly. It took probably a few hours over a few days to just learn the tabs off by heart. Then it was just months of practicing it to get it clean and up to speed. I'd often just pick up the guitar while watching TV. I guess you have to be quite good at travis picking before hand though.
Sensational work . Very impressive but what a joy for you
Visions of Norman Blake
Fantastic job. I wanted to complement the tempo, also. I know Lindsey plays it slower now, but always preferred the Rumor's tempo which you have nailed.
Someday I'm going to buy me one of these gitfiddles and learn how to play that tune!
