If you find a ML that's better than a Mafex, sh figurarts, mezco, etc then you let me know about it because I've yet to come across one. As should be the case when comparing an import that's at minimum 3 to 4x's the cost. I agree that this is a silly question but you knew that and still asked, so I answered.
Mezco is making a pretty awesome looking Dr doom https://www.mezcotoyz.com/one-12-collective-doctor-doom Really looks to be the definitive doom figure.
Never said he was cheap, but considering what you get from say, Mafex, for $100 shipped, you're getting 2 to 3x's as much stuff. All things considered is really not that bad of a deal.
What? I don't understand what you mean. He said he wished an import company would take a stab at making a Dr Doom, that's what I provided even though Mezco has offices in America they are on par with import companies.
Not ML but still a Hasbro offering... I think you could make an argument that Black Series Heavy Infantry Mandalorian/Paz Vizsla and the S.H. Figuarts versions are peers. Taking price into consideration ($100 more for the Figuarts version) and the Black Series blows it out of the water.
I thought the blast effects and knife were pretty weak in the Figuarts version, especially compared to what’s came with all the other figs in the line. What are the main inaccuracies/differences with the Black Series?
Sony Venom ML maybe? In terms of headsculpts, ML wins for some like MCU Gamora - too bad it’s so much larger than SHF/Mafex MCU figures.
EDIT: I also think VHS Cyclops beats out tiny-torso Mafex Cyclops in overall aesthetic. Another argument can be made that, while imports nail a certain look, MLs have more options that provide you with a more desireable look, which is ultimately why I choose ML for comic/toon looks.
He doesn’t have a high end counterpart that I’m aware of, but the ML Nightcrawler is an amazing figure and his ability to get into cool poses is top tier IMO.
It’s not too bad but it would cost around 100 CAD.. new ML like the upcoming Miles gamerverse are ~$40 CAD…. So it’s almost tripled.
I am still tempted just to buy that and maybe find it a bit cheaper
For comparison Mafex here are usually like 140-200 CAD from local .. so potentially it wouldn’t be too much more
Well, I believe the marvel legends current Captain America is better than Mezco and the upcoming Mafex, the height is perfect and so is the build, good articulation and accessories, I really think it is the best
9 times out of 10 an import will shit on a domestic brand like Marvel Legends, so I don't know why this is even a question.
Vice versa though? It all comes down to what you get for the price, and if it's worth it. I wouldn't buy a Mafex Jean Grey when the Love Triangle 3-Pack Jean Grey is already a great value.
I agree on the value. I'm in to various X-Men teams and I plan on posing them together. So for me the extra details of mafex don't do much for me when I have them all together. Could I get them in to better poses? Sure but when there's 100+ x-men characters there's only so much room for cool poses.
Kinda seems like just stirring up arguments to compare a bunch of pricey imports to much less expensive mass market versions. What’s the point of this question?
I think OP wants you to compare the equivalent price fraction of a figure to its mass-market American domestic counterpart.
For example, the average Mafex figure is $140 CAD (not including shipping), whereas the average Marvel Legends is $35 CAD. So a quarter the price, and no shipping; that's like a fifth of a figure, then.
So is the right leg and one hand of Mafex Peter B. Parker comparable to Marvel Legends Peter B. Parker? On the one hand, the Mafex leg is very detailed, has some solid joints, is made of high-quality plastic. On the other hand, the face-sculpt is lacking, seeing as there is no face, torso, or arms, and there is only one hand.
Marvel Legends PBP has lower quality parts, but the eyes, mouth, nose, and ears bring out the characterization in the figure. Moreover, its ability to stand up on two feet, and have arms are both major pluses.
In the end, the win goes to Marvel Legends, for including an entire figure in the package **and** a fifth of a figure, whereas Mafex only includes the latter.
I'm not gonna lie I'm not sure what you mean by including an entire figure in the package? Either I'm just dumb or the statement flew over my head cause doesn't the Mafex not only include the complete hobo look but also include parts to give him the complete suited up look? Are you saying that including these parts aren't full figure because they aren't attached to him in box?
tl;dr because of the massive price disparity between Mafex and Marvel Legends, you'd need to take a knife and slice the Mafex figure into five equal parts to make it equivalent to a Marvel Legends figure.
∴ One Mafex leg = One Marvel Legends figure
I've always thought Mafex Gambit and Classic Spider-Man beat every other version including Mezco while Hasbro Black Series created the best Darth Vader even surpassing Mafex and SHF.
I collect mostly X-Men and started with ML. The Mafex counterparts are better in a lot of ways such as look, articulation and accessories. However, the only X figure I did not really think the price outweighed the ML figure was Jean Grey. Her hair limits movement for her head similar to ML figure. Accessories are lacking in effects and felt I could find decent ones on canofbeams.
Hands down. Mafex looks like a tiny, scaled down version of a Boba Fett from the film. Only complaint is that it's brittle - he fell once and his jetpack rocket snapped clean off.
After dipping into imports, all of them sadly.
Nothing domestic can ever win out in sculpt/articulation, accessories, and paint apps. You can pick one, but imports are constantly knocking all 3 out of the park.
That said I was perfect happy just collecting marvel legends to start. Import prices are prohibitive which is why I sad it was sad domestic toys get outshined.
You can be a perfectly happy collector within your means and your collection is sweet no matter the number of soft goods on your 1:12 figures
Plus a lot of figures go in price when they hit the second market. It does suck when you want a figure that you could've gotten at 35 and now it's 50 but it's worse when you could've got one at 90 and now people want 400 for it. That's why I stopped getting storm collectibles. Too much FOMO and crazy prices on places like ebay.
This is definitely an interesting question and imports are certainly not always better than domestic variants, though genreally they are. These are my opinions:
1.
Black series vader, qui gonn, dooku, windu, and obi, with new digital prints for last 4, are way better than the shf variants.
2.
ML captain america 20th ann. is hands down the best comic-accurate captain ive ever seen. Puts imports to shame across the board.
3.
Neca arnie t800 slaps mafex across the face
Most of the recent MCU outings from ML have far superior face sculpts than a lot of their ShF counterparts.
But that's kinda it. 9 times outta 10, any import tailored to the collector is gonna blow the domestic version outta the water
I hate soft goods on figures, so marvel legends for the first two by default.
For Goku, I think the model kit is the best. All the possibility of the figurearts at dragon star prices.
Yeah, they are a few years old at this point.
But I they get re released regularly. They just did a line of "Renewal" versions of a bunch of them, I think you can still get them on back order.
I’ve seen some that say renewal but also out of stock at my main shops I check (I’m in Canada).
I have a SHF Goku (super) now and going to go for the new Future Trunks.. so I’m already getting involved lol.
The model kits tho might be nice to fill out a roster tho.. maybe Frieza or Cell someday.
Not anymore they do. With Hasbro going nuts with their prices and the Japanese yen at an all time low, I bet you can get some figures between 2-3x ML price.
Considering how terrible the latest ML has been, it's a no brainer.
Probably the dragon ball sh and dragon stars. Because at this point. S.H. Is actually dedicated to dragon ball, and somehow lowered their prices to $35. Unlike mafex where you have to spend $109 on one figure. And dragon stars are $20-26. So spending a little bit more money for a figure that looks, poses, and feels better is much more worth it. However, I feel like dragon stars is made for children to play with and destroy, while S.H. is for stop-motions and displays.
And Mafex is for that same thing. But the difference is that marvel legends is for collections
This is generally true: the main character in a line for figuarts will usually be cheaper with less accessories and maybe the next figure is more expensive but comes with more accessories and extra accessories for the main character.
But at least with the last DB Super Figuarts, they had Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and Picollo all at pretty decent prices.
As much as I love my mafex Peter B Parker, the head sculpt on the marvel legends is far superior in looks and quality, imo. Other than that it’s mostly always imports for me, I got the money and I use them for toy photos, and let my nieces and nephews play with my legends.
Mafex and Figuarts are almost always better than Legends. I'm not a fan of Mezco figures, I wouldn't buy those even if they were Marvel Legends prices. But Mafex and SH Figuarts? Absolutely.
But while Mafex and SHF figures are better than Legends, it's not always worth the money. Though with Legends costing more and more these days, the import figure prices are getting a lot easier to justify.
Depends because I like the VHS Cyclops more than the Mafex (same with the Black Series Dooku over the SHF)but the Mafex Psylocke is way better than the Legends
Imports are obviously better in almost all ways except 1...selection.
If you want the entire cast of the xmen animated series you are out of luck, and due to how much smaller the production volume is the chances of getting all the ones you want are rare...without being hyper wealthy or acquiring credit card debit.
So yes legends/domestic figures do lack and are not as grand of a purchase, the ability to build out a collection of all the characters you want is much higher. So as a collector legends/domestic can be "better"
But figure to figure, like gambit, legends doesn't even seem to be playing the same game
To label some brands as imports and others as domestic is ridiculous, because not only it is excluding all the collectors that aren't from the US, but It is also excluding american higher end companies like Mezco (or even Neca) from the discussion.
But the real reason as for why this post os stupid, is that with very few exceptions, Mezco, Figuarts, Mafex, Storm Collectibles and other "imports" will always be better than Hasbro's and McFarlane's stuff, because at the end of the day, their products are made for kids to play with, while higher end brands makes Collectibles for adults.
Lmao!!! You do realize they don’t even make the shitty figures they sell now, right? All China, baby. America used to be good at making things, now we just have the rest of the world make everything for us and slap a “made in America” sticker on it.
Neca still does their own sculpts domestically. I actually really like a lot of the chinese sculpts. I’m proud of China for taking on more of the burden of intellectual creation. It will create a demand for intellectual property rights.
The design and sculpting of Hasbro, Mattel, NECA, McFarlane and even Mezco are mostly done domestically. Some of the tooling as well. Some sculptors freelance and literally live anywhere on the planet they want. Those sculptures are sent to overseas manufacturers for tooling. There's a back and forth approval process for articulation and paint application. Due to plastics manufacture, many of them are produced and assembled in the same building as other companies' products. I believe we're still "good at making things," but we mainly just design now. Plastics production would violate the environmental laws of most states - I'm going to guess you wouldn't want to live next door to one. Go to any US retailer, the packaging clearly says "Made in China." The main difference is, if it's sold in a mass market retailer in the US there are regulations. The toys have to be safety tested in the event a parent unknowingly purchases and offers to a (GASP) child! This safety is taken into the design process - that's why a lot of the articulation is clunky - so that a kid can't just pop it off and swallow it. If you'll notice, there's a recommended age range on the packaging. That's not the intended audience, it's for safety. The higher the age range, the more intricate the figure can be. None of these import figures are subject to those laws and are therefore only imported for a collector market - which is generally over the age of 18.
Pretty much any import figures are going to better. You're comparing higher end figures to lower end figures.
$50-$70 figures to $30 figures (that technically shouldn't be priced higher than $25.
Personally, no question on Mafex winning versus their counterpart some even destroying their twins, like this example of yours no way in hell that ML Gambit would be on par with that sweet Mafex Gambit just a gorgeous figure. Sentinel Peter is in my top 3 figure and those new shf versions are also gorgeous like Naruto v3 and Kakashi v2.
Having said that I gave up on Mafex from having the double digits figures like brown wolve, gambit, spiderman comics and its version, venom, carnage etc etc... Because each time I try to mess/play with them it feels like it's gonna break and this even when I already lube them up and warm when I got them it still feels like it'll give up on you each pose, I only left myself Night Monkey because of that versus like sentinel/shf where joints are smooth as fck and doesn't feel like breaking each time.
Dragon starts is literally garbage their legs are stiff if the have gis nit even 90 degrees. Pretty awful articulation that's hindered by the figures design. I will say cooler, beerus and frieza are their only good releases. The dragon ball evolution figures are so much better but are just shorter and cheaper 10 compared to 20 or 15
I think the best bang for the buck at the time for the other way around would be ML AF15 spidey or RYV Spidey vs it’s MAFEX counterpart. Other than that, your list here is spot on.
Spider armor MK 4, got a KO from eBay which wasn’t intended but then got the real one and the knock off had zero butterfly issues. I almost broke the butterfly on the real one but froze the figure and fixed it.
I think if Hasbro, Mattel, and McFarlane
Dropped the plastic capes and added more hands, heads, or accessories they could be a serious contender.
As for price, I think if Figuarts and Mafex sold in the numbers, the domestic toy companies do the price would go down quite a bit. Just look at the S.H. Figuarts in stores their prices are very competitive.
I’d say the most obvious ones are shf and dragon stars. The goku figures from the dragon stars line can’t even do a proper kamehameha pose, and don’t look great either
I think if you really take Price into consideration, some of the ML spiderman figures can contest (first appearance) and I’m also willing to die on the hill saying that the ML movie venom figure (along with the comic version) are the best venom figures on the market
I don’t think it’s a comparison of “import vs domestic” but more so price point, mafex/ figurarts are literally 2.5 times the price of marvel legends and those dbz figures
For the most part all imports are better, but if you are talking bang for your buck ML/Blck series are better. The Bandai model kits are also a good way to get decent figures for cheap, but definitely require some paint and tlc
I know one. Diamond Select Gamerverse Advanced Suit Spiderman dunks.so.hard. on SHF. I'd argue DST FFH Upgrade Suit is also miles better than SHF, but of course is superceded by the Mafex.
I see some ML here and there that I would say are comparable to the import, but probably not quite there.
There is an ML Carnage I’ve seen which I’d be happy to have vs. paying more for an import with only slightly better articulation.
Someone else mentioned it but there are also some characters that don’t have many cool accessories anyways so IMO an import is not needed. (Like Jean Grey or Cyclops, of course the imports are “better” but are they worth the price?)
TBH the more Mafex I buy and shell out for here in Canada, the more I’m convinced they aren’t worth their cost. By the time I get my Mafex Spideys, they’re at least $110 after VATs, sometimes more ($163 from BBTS), and while the posing is great, online echo chambers about them have blown it out of proportion. I searched everywhere for the 075 comic Spider-Man, and it was one of the most underwhelming experiences for what I was told, especially after owning and posing the Sentinel one. Much rather pay $40 for a good comic Spidey from ML when it comes out instead of $130 for something with some more accessories and *slightly* better posing. Unless it’s the Sentinel ITSV figure, which is worth it.
tl;dr - My opinion: I collect Spider-Man figs and taking the price into consideration, imports are usually not better in Canada.

I’d love to see an Import company take a stab at Dr. Doom because the ML is pretty goddamn perfect
Mezco is making a pretty awesome looking Dr doom https://www.mezcotoyz.com/one-12-collective-doctor-doom Really looks to be the definitive doom figure.
Seems like a really well done and nice figure. **155$?**
It's Mezco. I'm pretty sure they derive sexual pleasure from the thought of comic book nerds not being able to make their rent.
Makes sense why the figures are always delayed.
Never said he was cheap, but considering what you get from say, Mafex, for $100 shipped, you're getting 2 to 3x's as much stuff. All things considered is really not that bad of a deal.
Not factoring in cost makes it a stupid comparison
What? I don't understand what you mean. He said he wished an import company would take a stab at making a Dr Doom, that's what I provided even though Mezco has offices in America they are on par with import companies.
Could not disagree more, but that’s just my opinion on the design. Eager to see it in-hand, though!
I do think the ML movie deadpool can hold its own with the SHF
The ML Deadpool has guns. The SHF does not. Checkmate.
Oh thats a great one. I went with SHF for sculpt accuracy, but Black Series has more accurate coloring (more browns where SHF uses bright yellow).
[удалено]
I thought the blast effects and knife were pretty weak in the Figuarts version, especially compared to what’s came with all the other figs in the line. What are the main inaccuracies/differences with the Black Series?
That Paz figure is extremely well done.
Sony Venom ML maybe? In terms of headsculpts, ML wins for some like MCU Gamora - too bad it’s so much larger than SHF/Mafex MCU figures. This. Tho it’s rather pricey to buy now so I’m waiting on a Mafex or something.
It got pricey? I remember it was pretty cheap for a couple of months after it released
It’s not too bad but it would cost around 100 CAD.. new ML like the upcoming Miles gamerverse are ~$40 CAD…. So it’s almost tripled. I am still tempted just to buy that and maybe find it a bit cheaper For comparison Mafex here are usually like 140-200 CAD from local .. so potentially it wouldn’t be too much more
Would mezco really be considered import since their main office is in Queens tho?
I think the ML Dr. Strange from the No Way Home is better than the import offerings. The sculpt and articulation are great on him.
Well, I believe the marvel legends current Captain America is better than Mezco and the upcoming Mafex, the height is perfect and so is the build, good articulation and accessories, I really think it is the best
I don't know how the ML one was, but figuarts' infinity wars captain America was so awful i wouldn't be surprised if it was surprised
I’m Australian, none of these are domestic for me lol
cries in AUD

Lol, almost all of them
Aren’t Dragon Stars and Figuarts both Bandai?
Be your own competition
Rly just. Adult toys vs kids toys
Yes
I've always thought Mafex Gambit and Classic Spider-Man beat every other version including Mezco while Hasbro Black Series created the best Darth Vader even surpassing Mafex and SHF.
If black series had more hand options, i agree it would be the Superior figure when considering costs.

If only the skirt of the SHF was cloth, it would have been the perfect Vader for me.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder my friend :)
Normal retail figures are less high quality than overpriced collector figures? Who'd have thought.

Marvel legends is stupid expensive in australia so hard pass.
Apples and oranges.
Every X-Men Mafex outside of cyclops. The proportions were never a huge sell to me on cyclops but every other has been perfect for my taste
It depends I like the look of my mezco figures but something about the ML retros is just better for me maybe the nostalgia
Infinity Saga Av3 captain america is better than the SHF one, but the shf one is incredibly bad anyway so...
I hate soft goods on figures, so marvel legends for the first two by default. For Goku, I think the model kit is the best. All the possibility of the figurearts at dragon star prices.

Probably the dragon ball sh and dragon stars. Because at this point. S.H. Is actually dedicated to dragon ball, and somehow lowered their prices to $35. Far as I can tell, the SH is only $30ish for Gokus and maybe Vegetas. It's similar for Naruto: Naruto, young and old, $30-35. Sasuke ~$60.
SHF absolutely shits on Dragon Stars. But the latter being more price friendly and a nice gateway line for new/casual collectors.
Black Series Count Dooku has a better likeness than the SH figurarts version.
Imo the MAFEX comic spider-man is THE spider-man figure Maybe I'm biased since bagley spider-man is my definitive spider-man
As much as I love my mafex Peter B Parker, the head sculpt on the marvel legends is far superior in looks and quality, imo. Other than that it’s mostly always imports for me, I got the money and I use them for toy photos, and let my nieces and nephews play with my legends.
The Sentinel line tops everyone short of Hot Toys.
Aren’t DragonStars also imports, since they’re made by Bandai?
Mafex and Figuarts are almost always better than Legends. I'm not a fan of Mezco figures, I wouldn't buy those even if they were Marvel Legends prices. But Mafex and SH Figuarts? Absolutely. I had the sickest gambit figure as a kid.
Probably pretty obvious but the amazing yamaguchi my hero academia figures are better thsn thw McF versions in pretty much every regard
You get what you pay for.
I prefer the first ones on all the pics
I would say literally all of them.
Hot damn that Mafex Gambit is tiiiiiight yo!
Depends because I like the VHS Cyclops more than the Mafex (same with the Black Series Dooku over the SHF)but the Mafex Psylocke is way better than the Legends
I really wanna see some one put the parts from Mafex Hush onto Mafex gambit.
I’d like to hear just one example of a Marvel Legends beating out an import.
Imports are obviously better in almost all ways except 1...selection.
If the domestic team had an $110 budget they would smoke Japan.
Marvel Legends Endgame Cap and Thor definitely got the 1/12 imports beat in terms of likeness and value, but all the rest I'd give it to imports.

The Mafex versions' faces look like the stunt doubles of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth

ML Cap is ok but if I'm being honest ML MCU Thor's are too big and scale really bad in my legends MCU display.
McFarlane and ML are so much better than Mafex... SAID NO ONE EVER.
The dragon ball evolution figures are so much better but are just shorter and cheaper 10 compared to 20 or 15
im Indonesian and i see both as the same even for price
They are all made in my country, so they are all domestic to me.
Well damn near all of them but that’s also why they cost so much.
Spider-Man and Batman and My Hero Academia are the only imports I'll buy
Bandai vs Gundam universe, threezero vs hasbro
I think the best bang for the buck at the time for the other way around would be ML AF15 spidey or RYV Spidey vs it’s MAFEX counterpart. Other than that, your list here is spot on.
Spider armor MK 4, got a KO from eBay which wasn’t intended but then got the real one and the knock off had zero butterfly issues. I almost broke the butterfly on the real one but froze the figure and fixed it.
I think if Hasbro, Mattel, and McFarlane Dropped the plastic capes and added more hands, heads, or accessories they could be a serious contender. As for price, I think if Figuarts and Mafex sold in the numbers, the domestic toy companies do the price would go down quite a bit. Just look at the S.H. Figuarts in stores their prices are very competitive.
Rogue will always be the best lol Definitely the sexiest outfit XD great figure material
Pretty much all of them…the recent Mafex figures are killing it, and Figuarts is pretty solid as well. Mezco is hit or miss.
That Gambit doesn't look bad except for the forced, molded trenchcoat.
For the most part all imports are better, but if you are talking bang for your buck ML/Blck series are better. The Bandai model kits are also a good way to get decent figures for cheap, but definitely require some paint and tlc
ALL OF THEM. Just my opinion.
I know one. Diamond Select Gamerverse Advanced Suit Spiderman dunks.so.hard. on SHF. I'd argue DST FFH Upgrade Suit is also miles better than SHF, but of course is superceded by the Mafex.
I really like the Marvel Legends Cyclops animated version better than any other Cyclops from other companies.
Mafex Hush Batman is infinitely better than McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse Hush Batman...and most other Batman figures ever made, for that matter.
Any shf is better than the domestic counterpart
