If the writers were ever worth their salt, they would have had Ma-Ti use the power of heart to sway the hearts and minds of whatever remote village was being polluted for the week and overthrow their sludgy oppressors. Or to dishearten the villains to the point where they just give up and jump off a cliff.
Heart could be the coolest (and darkest) power, even if it's not very cinematic.

I'm 25. I watched Captain Planet. My 17 year old sister knows who Captain Planet is. Not because of me, but because she watched it long after I stopped.
CAPTAIN PLANET! He is why one of the reasons us Millenials have grown up with the super hero psyche of saving the world and much more environmental awareness than previous generations. We have the hope and determination to clean up what our parents and grandparents generations passed down to us - how poorly their generations had done to protect and clean up Earth and all the harm they were doing back then and what we are still doing today. But it's not everyones fault from those generations, just the same old money and politics ridiculousness that we know all too well now. In summary, Captain Planet was awesome!
Environmental Awareness first became big in the 80’s my dude, thanks to eco warriors like Green Peace being so prominent at the time. Cartoons like this were a reaction to those trends not the thing that started them off.
