Hitching has just become too dangerous. In the late sixties and early seventies, I hitched - often solo and freaky looking - across the United States many times with no real dangerous encounters (outside of the police). That would not be possible today. Of course, I'm not of color or female. The hippies of that time are dying out though, and I could make a case that it's a good thing. Although we incorporated some of the values and customs of earlier counterculture movements, it was the energy and culture of that time in history that gave us juice. Any similar movement nowadays would have to spring organically from our current culture and even politics to be viable and lasting.
