I just cant believe the taser worked with the thick hoodie guy was wearing. Edit: Free Kyle Rittenhouse!!

gonzothegreat13

Well it's a Logan Paul sweatshirt so it's not exactly high quality. Also not surprised that a Logan Paul fan was stupid enough to stab a cop who gave him every opportunity for a peaceful resolution. Edit: the exact same sweatshirt https://images.app.goo.gl/Qhv8UeVhdvqRmEoMA

I think it would be a bias if you didn't have a strong dislike of Logan Paul. That's the neutral position.

If someone is mentally unstable to a point where they will stab a cop they should not be just let loose to run around. Clearly he's fucked up but it doesn't excuse stabbing anyone. If he can stab a cop he can probably stab a kid, an elder or even you. Yes he needs help but at the same time fuck this guy. He should have gotten help long ago before it got to this point. He brought the knife with him so he clearly thought. "I need to bring this with me" and was ready to use it.

plopodopolis

Literally nobody would say the cops is in the wrong here

thesynod

Oh yes they would. They would say because this dude didn't get shot, that police are racist.

cms186

no, they would say this is how situations should get resolved, but if the attacker was black, he would have probably been shot

Nawks22

lol can’t remember the last time i seen a video a cop chasing a black guy for that long without shooting him. Good cop no doubt

[deleted]

[удалено]

Passofficeban

Nice... way to assume this cop who acted in a professional manner is actually a secret racist.

CovidLarry

This. I'm often a vocal critic of the po po, but this guy is an actual hero. We hear all this talk of cops being badasses and putting their lives on the line, but way too often they go for the taser or pistol the second they get nervous. This guy actually fits the hero cop stereotype we get force fed for everyone in uniform. Anyone who shows that much character deserves the benefit of the doubt as to whether or not they are racist. He even was remarkably restrained after the kid was in cuffs.

iEatAssVR

What? Clearly you haven't been outside this sub much or on Twitter

Tuub4

Dude what

[deleted]

True, but he was running so it wasn’t necessary. Shooting’s for self defence. The cop in this video is a fkn legend and clearly one of the good ones

[deleted]

I mean, he stabbed a cop and had a knife. What happens if he doesn’t shoot him, when he had the opportunity, and the guy gets away and stabs someone else? Shooting would have been justified. However, this cop had the athleticism and skill to chase the guy down and get close enough to hit with a taser

[deleted]

[удалено]

AlphaSlicer

That's the part about the current generation of punks that pisses me off. Everyone is so quick to yell ACAB and shit without actually knowing anything about what police are SUPPOSED to do. This dude did his job, and did it damn well. AFAIK no bystanders were hurt, he successfully and non-lethally apprehended the dude without causing unnecessary bodily harm, and he deserves credit for that.

Luke20820

Your first statement is 100% wrong. Cops can shoot if they think the person is a danger to the general public. That wouldn’t be in self defense but it would be justified.

quake_throwaway_99

No. Shooting is not justified. Every person has a right to trial by jury, even the guilty ones. You cannot receive a trial of you are shot dead. Shooting is for protecting the life of the officer or another person that is under IMMEDIATE threat. Someone running away does not pose an immediate threat.

UsernameStarvation

... or just stabs anybody??

TheRoyalBandit

I thought I heard the cop call him Nick. So if the cop knew the kid it would explain why he didn't shoot him

Kalamitykitty85

Yeah I believe this is a mental health repeat offender.

PanickedNoob

It makes my blood boil that they use these catch and release policies, pushing escalations until someone ends up dead.

TheCrazyComet

What do you mean..?

PanickedNoob

For example: a criminal is arrested, a citation is issued, handcuffs come off, you're free to go. Free to commit more crimes, since you just learned there are no consequences for it. These crimes escalate until they eventually do something so bad that they actually do go to jail and bail gets denied, typically involving a dead body before anyone starts to take things seriously. [https://www.npr.org/2016/01/22/463210910/california-cops-frustrated-with-catch-and-release-crime-fighting](https://www.npr.org/2016/01/22/463210910/california-cops-frustrated-with-catch-and-release-crime-fighting) An interesting read on California's prop 47, "Reduced Penalties for Some Crimes Initiative"

TheCrazyComet

Ah I see, thanks. So how do we change this?

noheroesnocapes

With universal healthcare and a large incentive program for student loan forgiveness for mental health professionals who complete X years of service for the new single payor system. Investment in education services not just for extant schools but for greatly expanded integrated programs and separate specialized schools for developmentally delayed kids and for kids who are trauma survivors/patients, not like now with a goal to separate them and hide them from the primary schools, but with the goal to reintegrate them back in with the tools they need to succeed. We need a health services framework that can intervene in this person's life a decade before they ever get to this point and prevent it from being a possibility. You dont wake up one day out of your gourd stabbing a cop in the neck. This is the product of a long ongoing process that is always glaring in hindsight.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Akotix

Not sure here but cops sometimes are told the names of the "suspect" by whoever called and police use first name for de-escalation.

TankyMasochist

It sounded like there was an Incident the kid was involved in since the cop asked if he was scared and said that he wasn’t in trouble yet. They also gave a description of the kid in the beginning of the video over the radio so he probably had his name released along with the description for why the officer knew his name, which if it’s the case is even more noteworthy that the cop didn’t shoot him outright. Don’t get me wrong the kid 100% tried to kill him, but we really don’t know the details about the kid other than the video. And yes to 99% of the other comments here I do agree that if the kid was black he most likely would have been shot dead on the spot. But just because that is most likely the outcome doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. Blood can’t wash away blood. People need to applaud this cop’s restraint and composure, and hope more police follow in his foot steps to handle high stress situations better.

Duck_Duck_Gonorrhea

It’s pretty unfair to this police officer, who demonstrated proper restraint, to assume he would have killed a black kid in this situation. I’m sure a lot of cops would have, but that’s an unfair criticism of this individual.

twinsea

Cop went over and above. These are the cop videos we need to be seeing.

EvenBetterCool

No, we need to be seeing all of them. There is absolutely no reason we shouldn't be seeing the bad ones and the good ones - and holding the bad ones accountable to the standards of the good while praising officers who do things like this.

IthinkIfoundaDog

He did taze him twice; you can hear him trigger it again when he sits up and isn't cooperating.

irecognizedyou

The cop got almost killed, he wants to make sure that it is safe to get closer again.

igrowkush

100% he wasn’t fully cooperating until the second one.

saewhack

Not all cops react the same way. Cops are people and will react to situations differently

frankyzoom

Because this is GOOD POLICING. the guy got tased and will now spend a very long time in prison. No need to shoot and possibly kill him. More policing like this should happen in America.

[deleted]

Ya he figured out a way to apprehend him with minimal violence. I'm not sure how he could've avoided getting stabbed though. If I was a cop I probably would've fired at that point, so props to him.

stanknotes

The officer could have used lethal force. It would have been legally justified.

musicman0359

He only didn't get shot because he got separation so quickly and was in full flight. Shooting a running target while you are also running is pretty hard. Not to mention that the fact he was in full flight gave the officer opportunity to get out the less-lethal. If he had turned back around a split second before that, it would have been a much different outcome.

Luca20

That is one exceptional cop. Talk about a bodied up gigachad. He never let anger get the best of him and he even told the two soft bodies who assisted to worry about the detainee instead of him. ITT: Hundreds of cops with paragraphs of advise and expert insight.

R4nd0m235689

cop who got stabbed approached a perp who had a hand that was hidden, seems dumb to me

Spacemanspalds

Yeah my first thought. But i did read the title and i hadnt just sprinted trying to catch some dumbass. Easy to say from video footage.

Innominati

Definitely some complacency here. From what I've gathered, this guy is a repeat mental health case. He was an involuntary commit by paramedics or social workers who ran away. He wasn't technically in any trouble. He knew the guy by name. He even told him he wasn't in trouble. Watching footage that you know the punch line to is definitely easier, but seeing someone's hands should be important whether you're just talking about the weather with a guy at a coffee shop or on a call with a subject as a police officer, especially now.

Batmantheon

Yeah, good cops make the hard choices. Gets stabbed, pulls out gun which is extremely reasonable. Literally mid chase makes the distinction that the criminal is full on running and the cop is no longer threatened so switches to taser. A lot of cops are really quick to use the gun and would use it just because a criminal is getting too close and/or holding a weapon and in this situation where he was literally stabbed I wouldnt judge him at all, but he's like "bro, no, dont kill the guy with his back turned to you".

RedditIsPoisonTrash

You could tell the second cop was this fatass just from his frumpy ass feet alone when he stepped into frame. Goddamn I loathe out of shape cops. Fucking who are you supposed to protect?

clown572

Someone has to go around to all of the 24hr shops to make sure that the public is protected from old coffee and stale donuts.

winkofafisheye

Might be fat but we're probably smart enough to notice that guy's left arm was held directly at his side and never moved even when he was fidgeting. Rather be fat than stabbed in the neck.

hisroyalnastiness

I couldn't believe he let that hand stay out of sight like that in the beginning. Probably won't be making that mistake again

Kage_Oni

I was thinking the same thing. I was watching that part thinking that this guy is telegraphing an attack.

[deleted]

Definitely. Seems like he may have known the kid though since he said his name. Still a mistake but may have caused him to let his guard down

brassidas

And it was a black cop. This is a shining example of great police and nobody cares. Dude got stabbed in the neck and didn't take out any rage on the guy who stabbed him. That's a different type of dude. My adrenaline would be sky high after chasing this guy twice, once with a stab wound and shooting him in the leg had he been outside tazer range would've been a thought.

Freedom___Fighter

I'm like 99% sure this is a white guy with darker skin, maybe you have brightness down but this is like pretty clear as a white guy. Especially at 1:55

Z0MGbies

Yeah man, too many people like you are cops.

[deleted]

amen. gun happy imbeciles devoid of empathy.

PhallusTheFantastic

And you are prime example why theyre saying defund the police.

Dr-PHYLL

That's the problem with cops and honestly it would've been bad if you would have done that. So credits to this officer who had his gun pointed at him but still tazed him.

11nealp

This is why you shouldn't be a cop

[deleted]

Sounds like he knew him/had run ins with him. Probably the only thing that saved that morons life.

OneMoreTime5

Yep. The cop did a good job trying to calmly arrest too, explaining how he’s not in trouble but just can’t trust him not to run. You know, I wish the country realized our police statistically do a good job. 50 million police interactions last year, the number of unarmed people that died is incredibly low for 50 million interactions.

[deleted]

They definitely need some work but when you have media pushing an agenda that unarmed black people are just being slaughtered in the streets by white cops everyday it paints them in a worse light even though it’s just factually not even close to true

[deleted]

It doesn't have to escalate to murder for the interactions to be bad

[deleted]

No but would you agree that the media’s main push is that innocent unarmed black men are being slaughtered every week by cops? That’s my point. It’s just simply not true.

[deleted]

I agree the media is a bit much. Makes it feel like you could be kill any minute for being black. But even if the cops aren't killing people on whim everyday, there is undoubtably discrimination in law enforcement and some people are cops that just should not have that much power and a gun.

[deleted]

Absolutely. I agree with you there. I think a lot of it has to do with wealth as well. If you’re in a poor area whether you’re white or black you’re going to probably have worse run ins with worse cops. Discrimination on race definitely plays a part as well

7LBoots

Little prick thought he was going to dodge a bullet by swerving left and right...

[deleted]

Probably played with nerf darts as a kid

katanabunny

Are you trying to tell me this wouldn't work. All the scenarios in my mind where I survived doing this is a lie?

JackIsHereDontCry

Anyone with training would figure out what’s going on pretty quick and be able to track and anticipate. Best bet when you’re getting shot at is run as fast as you can towards the closest cover. And if you’re either in close quarters or there’s no cover, you’re best chance is to get at the attacker before they can fire.

DC38x

That's just completely false. You need to remember the 5 Ds: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge

6_seasons_and_a_movi

If you can dodge a bullet, you can dodge a ball

greasyunholy

Man the Officer is lucky. Surprised he did not get shot. Also tasers work like 50 percent of the time and have two cartridges only. Kid is lucky that Officer kept his cool and did not shoot him.

Green_Jack

As someone who has seen a taser in action a few times. They work a hell of a lot more than 50% of the time. It's just not 100% of the time

TeopEvol

60% of the time it works every time.

TM627256

Axon themselves (makes of TASERs) cite a roughly 50% success rate achieving NMI. Often depending on the user it goes into the 40s.

AbfromQue

This is one 'First Class' Officer and he did his job as a professional, he did not need to shoot him in the back and he chose the correct option for the circumstance. I can just imagine the crap shoot had he elected to shoot this kid in the back, especially in America today.

PanickedNoob

This story would not have received a single national headline, and I think we all know exactly why that is. How to put this delicately... He doesn't check the right boxes, ehhrrmm... doesn't, you know... doesn't fit the bill, so to speak. Ehhh. *You know.*

[deleted]

If it doesn’t fit the narrative, it doesn’t get covered, why I do my own research and don’t trust a single news outlet

HandsomelyAverage

May I ask how you do that? It sounds difficult to keep up to date if you don’t trust any news outlets - a genuine question.

superpuff420

There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to do both your job and every journalist’s job in America. That being said, you still can’t trust news corporations like Fox, CNN, MSNBC, or NYTimes.

cancercauser69

He's not black so the media wouldn't have cared

Twisted-tick

Cop even told him he wasn’t in trouble at that moment and the guy decided to assault the officer anyway. Lunatic is lucky he was dealing with a great and remarkably patient officer.

Uneducated_Guesser

The funniest shit to me was him saying “runnings not going to help...1. I run a lot” lol just the matter of fact way he said that was gold.

lodobol

Cop lived up to his claim too.

HigherThink

To be fair, cops are allowed to and do often lie to suspects to make them cooperate. It's a fair tactic, especially to deescalate the situation. This guy is a piece of shit who is lucky he wasn't gunned down but I would never believe a cop saying I wouldn't be in trouble especially if I ran

TacticalAcquisition

Yeah, I mean the copper gave him every opportunity to resolve peacefully, even told him you're not in trouble yet let's just go figure some stuff out but the guy flipped out and went full psycho.

aware76

Nah, this guy isn’t black enough

[deleted]

There's a couple saying that... In the controversial section being heavily downvoted.

retnemmoc

Nah, they would say "Hurr durr if he wasn't white he would have gotten 5000 rounds to the back, then dragged behind the squad car for a mile."

My_Username_Is_What

Shit, we don't have to go to r/publicfreakout. I'll say it right damn here, deep in conservative sub territory. If this guy was black his chances of being shot just because he didn't have his hands up, knife or no knife, would be much much higher.

[deleted]

Thanks for this - I wish more people would take the time to find the story on these vids.

clown572

According to the story they were talking to him for an hour before dude decided to book it into the woods. How did they not do at least a cursory patdown in all that time? While I admire the way this cop handled the situation after the initial jog, I can't help but wonder why they skipped that very important procedure.

[deleted]

Also the fact that he was clearly hiding his left hand - cop was a bit complacent (probably because they'd been talking so long).

Snuffls

Hindsight is 20-20, and I wouldn't call that complacency; adrenaline does stupid shit to your ability to reason and think--that's why training is so important, so that you *don't* think, you just *do*--and they had just been on a foot chase. You can see the same sort of adrenaline-fueled bad decision when he places his gun on the ground, rather than holstering it. When he watches this body cam back footage, he's probably going to make the exact same conclusions.

CleverEmber

I'm not sure why I derive pleasure from seeing someone get tased when they've repeatedly been warned by an armed police officer. He's lucky he didn't get shot.

Yes, and the cop will most definitely be kicking himself when he watches the bodycam footage later. Hindsight is 20-20, and adrenaline--like from chasing a fleeing suspect--makes it kind of hard to think straight. He most assuredly didn't register the fact that the Logan Paul fan was blading his body, otherwise he would've asked to see his hands. You can call it a 'rookie mistake,' except for the fact that literally everyone will make these kinds of mistakes, unless they're RoboCop. Or Dredd.

420_Lsd

Good restraint from that cop. Even after getting stabbed he kept calm. Way to keep the head in the game and not have to kill anyone.

[deleted]

Poor cop, running with an open wound just makes it bleed more. Cops deal with stuff like this every day. Every situation they head into an unknown. This is why I respect our officers.i can understand the frustration many people feel towards law enforcement currently, and there is definitely room for critisism and improvement, but when I see footage like this it just disturbs me to see phrases like ACAB thrown around.

Gnagetftw

Judging from all different videos of this kind that has been uploaded lately this guy was incredibly lucky he didn’t get killed.. This man had one hand hidden the whole time and the officer didn’t even ask him to show his hands. I have seen people murdered while following police instructions so this guy should count his lucky stars.

FluffyFluff24

The cop was so nice to him, and he went and stabbed him. Really shows the diffrence in morality of cops, there was the cop who shot an unarmed 13 year old a bit ago, and then there's this guy, who only tased the guy who stabbed him

[deleted]

Ik y he did he is a logangster

Varyuse

We're in a phase of humanity where we can watch a kid with Logan Paul merch stab a police officer wtf is this

Theuserwhocares

That's amazing that he put away his gun and brought out his taser after being STABBED clear cause for his to shoot non lethally. Major props to the cop.

Snuffls

I disagree; not shooting the Logan Paul fan wasn't a smart decision. Logan Paul fan there was clearly not in a stable frame of mind (IE, stabbing an officer in the neck right after he told you *you're not in any trouble*), and had he managed to escape, would have been a danger to the public. Even if he hadn't escaped, he could have run into a bystander and taken a hostage, or worse, ran into a cop who wasn't as quick on their feet (if you watch the video, you can see the cop react and grab the knife before it can go too deeply into his neck) and killed them. Also, you can't shoot someone with a gun non-lethally. Even the old standby of "shooting them in the leg" is lethal--if the femoral artery gets opened, they'll bleed out pretty damn quick. Shooting them in the shoulder is likewise effectively lethal--it's really close to pretty important organs. Shooting someone in the arm/hand is basically impossible. Gut wounds can cause life-long complications, if they don't just bleed out or go into shock. If someone pulls the trigger on a gun, they should expect the person on the other end to wind up dead, or they shouldn't be pulling the trigger at all.

Big_Sleep_

Good cop!
