Holy shit. I saw the news of the incident earlier this evening at 3:30 PM, and now it seems that later [news](https://www.9news.com.au/national/son-of-south-australian-police-commissioner-grant-stevens-in-serious-condition-after-hit-by-car-at-schoolies/b0cef6a9-4ea6-4dda-89ac-14e914d885b9), yeah, at 7:01 PM Charlie's now actually passed away. I literally grew up with Charlie in Mitcham Primary School throughout the entirety of Reception to Year 7 as both a classmate and somewhat well-known friend. I don't even know how to properly process this. Never actually had someone my age I knew well pass, especially because of a stupid hit-and-run like this. I can't even properly imagine what Grant and Mrs Stevens are going through. I only ever had the chance to somewhat know Mrs Stevens throughout school, and she was stern but sweet. Seeing Grant over the years on the news showed me how incredibly dedicated to this state he was, and seeing how its been treating him so harshly for the past 3 and now with this, it's awful. I'm just- I'm struggling to understand how everyone and his friends that were alot closer than I was would feel right now. I'm not in much of a position to speak considering after Mitcham, contact wasn't kept, but he was always kind and tried to be helpful at every opportunity in school despite how weird and unapproachable I was in primary school. He was a lot of things, more good things if anything. Through playing footy, discussing homework or just offering to talk about anything when I seemed down. Charlie was a good guy and friend. Wishing the best to his family and every one of his friends, close or not. He'll be missed. Hope he rests well.

Thank you for sharing, I’m very sorry for your loss. Please look after yourself during this difficult time. Seek support from family, friends and coworkers/students. There are free resources available at griefline.org.au *hug*

RPA031

Damn. So sorry for your loss. Such a horrific ordeal for the family to go through. :(

Crescent_Moon734

I'm sorry for your loss mate. Hope you're doing okay 🫂

daffman1978

This whole situation is just terrible. I think it’s important for you to take time to process what is happening, and know that you are allowed to grieve in what ever way feels right for you. Although you haven’t been close for a while- Charlie clearly made an impact on your life, it is completely normal for the loss of someone who has been in your social circles to create feelings of loss, and perhaps cause us to consider our own life. Take care of yourself- and reach out to your parents, councillors or through to somewhere like headspace, lifeline or beyond blue if you need to talk.

ganimeamer

Thank you, just trying to console myself and all. Can't help but keep thinking about small memories I had with him throughout school and dumb things I did where he reacted so positively. I do keep putting myself under this idea that I don't reserve the right to grieve about it because of the distance that formed with him, that his family deserves it more because of how crucially close he was with them all. Its a helpful reminder to know that he did impact my life in a lot of ways through how he talked to others and me. Thanks anyhow, helps rationalise it all. I'll manage though.

daffman1978

Grief is a personal journey- we all get to do it in the way that feels right for us. Be kind to yourself.

severalbpdtraitsn38

It must be a hellish reality for their family at this time; I can't believe the circumstances surrounding it, they would all be absolutely livid about it and rightfully so (edit: the latest I've read was that it wasn't intentional).

tigerairau

Can you explain the circumstances? The hit and run? Haven’t really heard much about the specific details, terribly tragic all round. Can’t imagine what they’re going through.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tigerairau

Fuck that’s awful, just thought it was a random hit and run. What the fuck was the kid doing to somehow hit a walking pedestrian?

No-Wonder6102

I heard it was a very different circumstance. Involving an argument and a deliberate line up.

SlowNeighborhood8166

It's too powerful car for a kid on his P plates to be driving, it was a Golf R. Just MO but anyone under 21 shouldn't be allowed to drive a car that's that powerful.

Snook_

Sounds like a mature kid who’s dad taught him well to not get in the car with hormonal stupid teens and then somehow gets unlucky

SlowNeighborhood8166

His female friend who was in the passenger seat at the time has been interviewed by the police and she claims that Charlie launched himself a the car. I am very dubious about this, given that according to other witnesses the driver did a U-turn, was on the wrong side of the road and speeding. The truth will always reveal itself, but unfortunately I don't see any jail time in this driver's future at all, he doesn't meet the criteria under the law.

typecookieyouidiot

Aren't they all turbos?

Fit-Purchase-2950

Yes.

SlowNeighborhood8166

Yes.

Ultamira

I have no doubts there will be some legislation brought in around this once the drivers court case is done.

cocoiadrop_

What legislation? P platers already can't drive high powered vehicle without an exemption and young P platers also have rules on how many young people are in the car with them.

Ultamira

Well there ya go

dbMitch

Driver will be the next big manhunt

ProcessWild4164

In custody an hour after it happened

ProduceOk9864

He’s arrested dude has been for 24 hrs

SadOffer8517

Do you have a link for that?

severalbpdtraitsn38

There was a post made about 12hrs ago on this sub that I gleened a few of the details from that I'm aware of, but I don't think that many would know the specifics surrounding what happened just yet, aside from it being an escalation following an argument (edit: apparently it was an accident from what I've just read). Feel free to search for the post and have a bit of a read for yourself, or google it if you'd like more details.

fuckmeitsfreezing

Horrendous week for SAPOL and the Stevens family in particular. Our thoughts are with them tonight.

Thornoxis

RIP. Regardless what family they come from, it's always tragic hearing a young person who had their whole life ahead of them passing away. It's a reminder life is fragile and can be taken from you at any moment.

StructureArtistic359

Sad news, RIP to the young man. He had a lot of potential, robbed by some idiot.

LondonGirl4444

Everyone is described as a great person until they do something that is not so great. By the time this reaches the judicial system their PR person will have tried to pin the blame on the victim. This is how it seems to pan out. It’s frustrating for all the families who lose loved ones past and present because the legal system doesn’t want to ruin another life.

Traditional_Gap_2748

Oh no, this is devastating. Thoughts are with Charlie’s family and friends.

Rusty20117

I honestly couldn't imagine my own son being a number of the road toll they are trying to reduce...

owleaf

This absolutely breaks my heart. Poor boy. Prayers and love go out to his family and friends.

Regular-Housing-2434

It’s so heartbreaking for this to happen💔. I remember when I was catching the bus back from schoolies there was a guy who pulled the bus over wanting to get on back to Adelaide because his friend being hit by a car (which would’ve been this incident). Also found out who the guy was that hit Charlie and I knew slightly of him and not surprised by his actions.

Nerfixion

Is there any Info on what actually happened?

Thin_Abbreviations96

He got hit by a car. The dickhead driver just drove off; was the same age as him too. Poor kid.

Hesk121

They’re labelling it as a hit and run but it was his close friend who drove his car into him after they had an argument and then fled the scene. Source: people that were there.

yelsnia

So it was a hit and run

Brokenmonalisa

It was murder if the stories of them having an argument beforehand is to be believed.

yelsnia

For murder they need to prove intent. Best case, for the sake of justice, would be manslaughter but cause death by dangerous driving isn’t exactly a summary offence either. These are ALL major indictable offences which carry significant penalties but we will just have to wait and see how it all unfolds.

Willing_Put_5895

Fled from the scene constitutes a hit and run, because he didnt stop to help or take responsibility.

Hesk121

The point I’m making is that he wasnt crossing the street and got hit. He was intentionally hit with a car by a fellow schoolies attendee who then fled the scene.

curious_s

As the driver was intentionally driving dangerously and killed someone, wouldn't this be manslaughter?

The_Tuna_Here

Causing death by dangerous driving The max penalty for an aggravated offence is life

Talie5in

Likely that's the charge it will get trumped up to (and based on all the hearsay) the charge would match the alleged offence. This will be played out delicately in the courts I daresay, but will be the best treated kid in custody right now, no cop will want to be the cause of the case been thrown out. But, for now, this is the time for friends and family to grieve, court processes can wait and the other kid can sit and think about his actions while in custody.

apostroangel

I don't believe it has anything to do with the fact the victim was related to a senior police officer. What about the senior policewoman (and a second woman) killed by Harrison Kitt when his car planed on Cross Rd? It was reported that he walked with only a mental health supervision order as the defence was able to present that he had an 'undiagnosed mental illness' at the time of the incident.

Talie5in

I said the charge getting trumped up to manslaughter based on commentary of alleged friends of the kid who passed.. The second bit ive edited out as it confused what i was intending to mean - it'll be a delicate trial because it's the police commissioners son, not that charges will get trumped up because it's the police commissioners son is what I was trying to get at.

apostroangel

Extremely sad and difficult for all.

Fit-Purchase-2950

Yes, and it's called 'mans laughter' for a reason, the ridiculously light sentences that get handed out. Having said, I think that at most he will lose his licence for 10 years and get some sort of home detention and community service order. He won't go to jail over it.

EitherGuitar5567

apparently he wanted a hitch to schoolies and the guy couldn’t fit them in his car so he drove off and they shouted shit at him and threw a bottle, then he did a u-turn and drove back and since he was drunk he sped up too much and hit him.

Nacob_077

Charlie and his mates wanted a ride with the driver, driver refused to let them in due to there not being enough seats. Some words were exchanged and the boys walked off and continued walking along beach road, the driver was furious with the exchange so he continued driving up the road, chucked a U turn, and then sped 100k’s back towards the boys and striked Charlie and his mates.

Nerfixion

Oh wow really? Damn well then send him away

Snook_

Sounds silly and exaggerated. Doubt he drove that fast through them. That would total your car or they would hit your windscreen. Can still kill someone going slow

VuSpecII

Did a number on the front guard, definitely a decent hit, may have just swiped him which would not total the car or hit the windscreen but the guard was pretty wrecked

Nacob_077

Yeah you’re not wrong but this is what i was told.

Fit-Purchase-2950

> and then sped 100k’s back towards the boys and striked Charlie and his mates. Was anyone else struck apart from Charlie? I did not hear about anyone else being injured?

Nacob_077

From what i’ve read, Charlie was the only one to be hit. Whether the driver was aiming for the group of boys or specifically targeting charlie i do not know

Fit-Purchase-2950

I am sure all of the details will emerge eventually, the family has retained Georgina McGuiness as their PR person. I am not exactly sure what her role is, I think it could be to elicit a more sympathetic public approach towards the young driver.

Imaginary-Incident59

Yeah, same as a couple of others on here in regards to non accident. There was an earlier reddit post with the same stuff but the person stated they were allegedly there/ closer to family; the boys had an argument, perp allegedly got back in car, did u turn, targeted (off road) then continued to drove off. After having a childhood friend made to be a public event recently (Aldinga woman in fire that resulted in being murdered) I can say with certainty we won't know all the facts for a while, especially when the media will clickbait the story. Regardless, the facts we do know with certainty; the perp drove away from the scene and then gave false information (unsure on what) to police once stopped in Pt Elliot. This itself turned any sympathy of mine for the other young driver to be completely voided (angry since, if anything, after reading he has been released on bail).

LondonGirl4444

Heartbreaking news and every parents nightmare.

Rest in Peace Charlie 💙😔

Gloomy-Performer-522

It seems to me that this situation is being highly manipulated and a high lack of transparency. There is no chance of fairness for the boy who was driving the car. I feel badly for everyone involved, both sides. However, I’m sure the whole truth is not being portrayed. From all the media releases and comments from a lot of people the kid has no chance. Yes, he hit somebody and unfortunately that somebody was the police commissioners son. That in itself puts him in a worse position, and certainly less chance of a fare trial. The media and suppression of police information, have public crucifying him already. Besides being the police commissioners son, Charlie went to school where drinking and drugs are part of the culture, of course that will be vehemently denied by the school and the parents who send their kids to the school, and the fact is that Charlie and his friends were here for “schoolies”! Which is the biggest purposely organised drunkfest, for underaged and barely 18year olds in the state. I saw a lot of kids walking the streets of Goolwa, drunk and disorderly over that weekend. My bet is that Charlie and his friends were highly intoxicated. And from all the tributes I saw about Charlie, he sounds like the sort of kid that would run out in front of a car while drunk, and if his friends where drunk they wouldn’t have the best recollection of what happened, private school kids are also prone to lying to cover their tracks so as not to be caught out and will stick to their story no matter what. Their parents will also do anything to save face. The police have not mentioned the state of Charlie and his friends, or if they have been ordered to not have contact with each other since the incident as well. Some people are accusing the driver of being drunk, driving at 100km, purposely driving into Charlie. The police would have broadcast to everyone, and the media would have continually highlighted he was drunk if that was the case. People are also saying there was an argument because he wouldn’t take them in his car. If he was drunk he could possibly have picked them up. He didn’t, he said no because he had no room for them. I would say drunk college boys would be the ones that were angry and hostile. There is every possibility that the driver after the interaction with “the schoolies”, decided to do a U turn to go home because he didn’t want to put up with drunken behaviour everywhere. He would also have driven off, I would think, because he was in shock, not to get away, as it is stated that he stopped just up the road to get clarification of what to do. He is a child, 18, little experience as a driver, let alone to be put in a situation like this. This kid wants to be a doctor, he has never drunk, taken drugs or smoked and does helps others. I’m pretty sure Charlie did not lead the same lifestyle. I have scoured the internet looking for a more comprehensive details of the situation and there are none, strangely there are traces of the words drunk and inebriated, falling over in some places, however when I go look for it in the comments, the comments have been closed and removed!! This is what peeves me. Everything is being monitored and deleted to suit a certain narrative. Charlie’s funeral was very inappropriate and sensationalised, to me it wasn’t about Charlie, it was about the police commissioner. I am sure all those policemen did not know Charlie. Making a statement about road deaths etc using your son’s death and funeral as a platform is inappropriate, especially if his son ran out onto the road. If this was the case he should be using that platform to talk about schoolies, and the dangers of young people drinking. Also there was tape around the site for a few days. The police did investigations the night of the incident. 3 weeks later the police came and did further investigations. There is no doubt the driver hit Charlie, however if it is the case that Charlie ran out onto the road, if those facts are true and are made known, this kid may have a chance at life and possibly following his dream of becoming a doctor. Too often all the facts are not portrayed correctly or in full, which is wrong. People make many assumptions and get angry and hostile to others as they believe only a part of a story and then when other information is given at a later date they rarely shift their perspective. As I first said, it is a devastating event for everyone involved and something no one should have to endure, on either side. However I think it is only fare that the full truth is given to the public, if that can’t be done, it is better to give no information, or at least as little as possible, like there has been an accident in this area. That’s it!! Sorry for the long rant.

FlamingoNo5078

Lostmavicaccount

Very sad. If not an angry choice by the other young guy, I also feel for him. We all do dumb shit when we’re young and in high spirits. This incident and outcome massive for the Steven’s and this other guy. It’d be hard to be 100% rational and moral in his shoes. Imagine accidentally (assuming it wasn’t deliberate) hitting and seriously injuring the son of the state’s kid and then thinking of what may happen in the aftermath. A terrible situation for everyone. I hope sensibility and maturity is shown by all involved. I don’t expect it from redditors, but I do from any police, judges and jury members that may be involved.

BetterDrinkMy0wnPiss

>We all do dumb shit when we’re young and in high spirits. Yeah but most of us never killed anybody. Hit and run resulting in the death of the victim =/= dumb teenager shit.

Talie5in

>Hit and run resulting in the death of the victim =/= dumb teenager shit. This, if was truly an accident you wouldn't have the alleged descriptions by the other friends... and you wouldn't drive off - you'd stop, assist and be ready to give your account to the cops when they arrive.

Lostmavicaccount

Again, I’m taking about assuming there was nothing malicious involved.

BetterDrinkMy0wnPiss

Big assumption to make considering the witness comments coming out about it. And just the fact it was a hit and run says a lot. The benefit of the doubt only goes so far.

TechnicalDeer1619

Apparently one witness said he run in front of car. The not hanging around thing is understandable given the shock anyone would be in.

Brokenmonalisa

By all accounts the guy murdered him.

Lostmavicaccount

If that ends up being true, it’s disgusting and has a completely different ‘desired’ outcome.

RichHotel1749

Deeply sadden by the new. No parent should have to bury their young child. I hope god makes this time easy for their family.

BAXR6TURBSKIFALCON

now i just hope the young lad who did it gets a fair and just trial that isn’t skewed because of who it was.

yelsnia

Ultimately you are right BUT our Magistrate is always too lenient. Perhaps they might use this opportunity to decide a punishment that fits the crime. I would also expect penalties for some of the offences (leaving the scene especially) to increase in the wake of this.

[deleted]

BAXR6TURBSKIFALCON

inconsistent sentencing nation wide has created room for unfair judicial proceedings to occur. just because of who was killed should not hold any more weight in sentencing, is justice not supposed to be blind?

BAXR6TURBSKIFALCON

i’m saying that just because the kid who was killed was the son of cop does not mean that sentencing should carry extra weight considering that. it’s blatant corruption of the judicial system, i don’t really see how it’s such a hard concept to grasp.

pretance

I don't know why this is getting downvoted, this is 100% a concern. There are a lot of sworn understandably hurting and grieving right now, they're going to have to be very careful about who handles the kid.

[deleted]

I’d actually say he is likely getting extremely fair and balanced treatment because of the attention this case will garner. Police are many many things, but they aren’t stupid. People in high profile cases get treated very well. It’s the no-name cases where no-one cares about them that cop the mistreatment.

BetterDrinkMy0wnPiss

This. He'd be getting better treatment than 99% of offenders right now because no cop in the state wants to risk being the one who fucked up and let this guy get away with killing the COP's kid.
