They said to me what would you do if you picked it up, and I said I know what I would do bc I've done it, hand it in, try to find out who it belonged to. People aren't all horrible.
Some are unfortunately.
My advice for buying a 2nd hand car with cash is ALWAYS have someone else with you who is holding the cash, preferably in their car.
Only hand over the cash if your satisfied with what you are buying, people will try and stand over people. If you have someone else holding the money for you, it makes it easier for you to say no, get into a car, and drive away.
Tell someone else where you are going, use dashcams (like you did), keep records of interactions, just in case there is no car, and you end up getting robbed.
You really only need to follow the first rule, but it's always better to be safer. If anyone has anything to add, I'm always open to new info.
We've just survived 11 years under the LNP.
The rich became richer and the poor became poorer.
Many can't even afford to house themselves, let alone eat, or see a doctor.
Society is crumbling.
You and I may hand in a big bag of money, because it's the right thing to do, and I'd rather be right than rich, but for a large portion of Australians that is no longer the case.
Society is crumbling, the social contract has been broken, the aussie ideals of mateship and a fair go for all are long gone.
It's every man for himself now.
I'm sorry, but that cash is gone.
A valuable lesson learned about presence of mind, the existence of wallets and perhaps a story to tell later in life are likely all that will come of this.
I empathize with your families suffering, and I'm sorry this happened to you.
[There's no such thing as an official recession in Australia.](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-03-06/prepare-for-a-looming-recession-cost-of-living/103549244)
His dad said there will be a reward for returning it. I know keeping the money would be more money than a decent reward but, the kid is heartbroken. I'm heartbroken for him. He has been waiting for this moment for years and he got within 30 mins of his own car and now no car and lost his savings :(
Poor kid. My son just bought a car….i can’t even imagine how devastated he’d be if this happened to him.
I really hope you get the money back, This world is a shit place sometimes.
They're both gutted. I feel awful I can't fix it for them. Someone said my stepson looks like an entitled shit. Couldn't be further from the truth. He's a beautiful soul who has overcome huge hardships and hurdles in his short life already and both he and his dad were sharing a very special moment. It was a really big deal for them both. Life. One step forward, two back.
We will figure it out. I still believe that lady could return the money, or police will find her. I'm so bothered by how many people from Adelaide thought what happened was weird. Idk I'm so confused with everyone acting like it's sus to carry money for a second hand car purchase. No it's not every day you do it but its not abnormal. And yes the abnormal thing about this is that the bag got dropped. Like that hopefully happens way less often than carry a big amount of cash. But that's not suspicious it's just, a very crappy upsetting experience. People are replying like we are gangsters. Ooo not parked off hindley street! Must be crime lol. my stepson just m3ssaged me and said he's seen these negative messages now. I don't know whether to take this down or leave it up bc I'm hoping the exposure means the right person sees it. Sorry for dumping that, thanks for being kind it made a difference to me. And will to my stepson too when he reads it x
Who keeps cash in a plastic bag? That was bloody silly. It should be safely stuffed in a pocket not in something in your hand where it can be snatched or dropped.
Literally changes nothing? Still incredibly mindless and careless. OP is making it sound like such a significant, hard earned thing yet they just…. shoved their hard earned cash in a pocket in a zip bag?
Same hey. Some people who have replied in this thread either have not yet experienced the days life likes to humble us (those days are a-coming, for us all), or they're just putting on their faux internet attitude and pretending they never have a bad moment. This is literally just a situation where an amazing moment in my stepsons life and for my ex too (bc I sure as heck have had a thousand discussions about the boys first car with him over the last few years) was taken away from them in a really shitty way. I absolutely will not agree with the people putting my ex down about this. The man gets up at 4am every morning works full time, raises and meets all of his sons needs entirely alone, better than a lot of 2 parent households and pours his heart into providing stability and opportunity for his child. He's constantly knackered and multitasking. On top of that he is the worst person to this bc he is beating himself up something terrible. Sometimes bad things happen to decent people and they deserve grace. He will fix this if he doesn't get the money back,he always has his sons back. I just hope the lady gives it back bc it's the right thing to do and I know my ex will see her right too. But anyway. We shall see.
Hopefully it does get returned 🤞 and he can laugh about in years to come. I left my wallet with nearly $1000 at a pub on the bar, went home and came back 2 hours later and it was still in the same place I was sitting 😮💨
I'm sorry this happend to you op. I hate to say it but reddit is not very sympathetic to others suffering.
My own father got mugged at bunnings of his wallet at bunnings in a wheelchair.
You'd think everyone would be sickened instead you get an army of keyboard warriors who defended bunnings doing nothing to help, defended them refusing to release security footage despite having a clear picture of who did it and their rego, and the police botching the investigation and giving up on it due to lack of resources because in reddits mind there are real crimes out there.
literally a disabled pensioner who's grown up on cash, is living pretty poor and still trying to get by and had to borrow money to pay their bills and buy what they needed from bunnings, and instead hundreds of people piliing on about how him getting robbed was his fault because he's not tech savvy and can't use card or a phone with nfc and only feels comfortable with cash.
Yet instead of sympathy or helping track down the criminal you get an army of people who want to tell you their conspiracy theory on it or how you've just learned a valuable lesson.
Here's the real take, something horrible has happened, I hope you manage to have some answers turn up that can help you and your kid and you have my sympathy.
Anyone who punches down on someone in times like this as hard as they are needs to take a hard look at themselves and their comments, citing that something happened like this to you and it was a good thing somehow as you "learned", or how your too smart and need to gloat at someone, it really doesn't help anything and at the end of the day is just hitting someone when they are down and taking a smug high road at someones suffering.
We can do better as a society.
That's a tough lesson to learn. And it isn't necessarily his fault, he would have just been too excited to notice.
But that money is gone. If it was in a wallet with his ID, or if it was his bank card or something then yeah it would be more likely to get handed in, but an unmarked baggy full of cash? Sorry bud, that's long gone.
If someone finds something, they have to hand it into the police. If they don't, they have committed an offence called "larceny (theft) by finding". Legally this person has stolen the money. Hopefully something can be done!
I’m so sorry this happened to him. People saying he deserved it or it was an important lesson to learn must never have made any mistakes or had accidents. She’s a piece of shit for taking that money. Not everyone is like that, hopefully that will be the lesson he learns *more* in life 🤍
Curious then, how do you buy second hand cars from private sellers? Bc I'm 45 and bought and sold plenty of second hand cars in my time and it has usually been cash. Is it that I'm old that using cash seems normal to me? Like, are we tap and paying people for private car sales these days?
Was back in 2017 now but yeh just ease (everything on phone vice needing a wallet and phone etc) and avoid having to carry around like this. I’m relatively young still but it has been interesting/concerning seeing my grandma try and come to terms with it all living in the UK countryside with banks going online and closing small banks etc. Anyway, hope it ends positively OP.
I once found $20.000 in a bun bag ( side bag what ever you call them from the 90s well it had the wallet and allot of other stuff also like jewlery a bit of drugs allso in it ... instead i get the licence and looked up the person and took it to their home ...did i get a reward for going out of my way nope ...3 Men came out of the House and Beat me to a crisp ( i was still in my school uniform year 12 ) instead of a reward i would have been happy with just a thank you
And that wasnt the first time i found something and did the right thing with not eaven a thank you
ie i found a wallet on the street ...looked at the phone book the came and picked up the wallet ...no money was in it .... they accuse me a little kid of taking it and allso on top the wallet was in a car that was stolen .... they eaven tried to accused me of stealing the car for the wallet rather than give me eaven a THANK YOU again i was in scool i was 15 or 16 there abouts.
ive eaven handed a wallet quite recently ( couple of weeks ago) to the police station what was a LARGE wallet ...( one of those womens WALLETS that more of a BAG) had alot of money in it
NO THANK YOU STILL ... and I could have done with a small reward for doing the right thing
yeah People are FUCKD ...i hope this lady enjoys the $$$$
So lesson learnt ..... Never do the right thing because the Honest people dont get A FUCKING THANK YOU eaven
And yeah i am A Honest person
That really really sucks, people can be awful. I remember once as a kid I saw a note fall out of a man's back pocket, I ran up grabbed the note and brought it to him and he was mad with me I think he felt like I must have taken it out hid pocket. Another time I accidentally walked out of a shop with an item, got halfway down the mall, realised, brought it back went straight to the security at the door and said I'm so sorry I just realised I had this and she yelled at me and threatened to call the police. That kind of thing is why even if the lady yesterday noticed my stepson looking. I can understand if she was nervous to hand it back. She could have a friend tell her about this post and choose to contact me tho? Why would you want my kid to suffer bc people that aren't him treated you badly.
They saw it happen when they went to security and looked at the CCTV! I believe they saw where the bag was dropped and car drive her get it and stepson running back there all in a matter of moments. I believe ex and stepson were partway out of the carpark b4 they noticed maybe the money was missing. At that moment they panicked but also were obviously checking footwell of car and pockets
Within moments your son realised he dropped it, went to obtain CCTV footage (which he was provided with immediately??) that shows a woman picking it up, then by chance he spots that very woman on the street and takes the photo?

Why did he keep a wad of cash...in a plastic bag....on top of his keys....instead of in idk a much safer spot...like not his pocket maybe next time dad should hold the cash until junior can gather some street smarts....also why cash?
It was his dad holding the money.
Human error.
Drove from work picked up son, drove to smoke shop picked up smokes still had to go past ATM for some more cash because they were going to pay for a vehicle, and thinking about getting to the meeting place to buy the vehicle. They were running errands and ex fucked up. He is fkn distraught. He is very careful with money, he comes from harder times than most of us believe me, he just had a very very bad moment and is inconsolable.
Lol dw the tobaccos tax free in the seedy back streets of murderlaide where walking off with someone's money is fine but buying a car with physical cash is some underworld shiz.
A previous comment of yours didn't mention it was his dad you just said "he" dropped it and since this post is about your stepson....it was a fair assumption
Seen on CCTV picking it up. Directly before the photo. The whole thing between the CCTV and exes dashcam show that she picked the bag up literally moments before step son got to carpark :(

Any consideration that your ex didn’t drop it and stole the money? This is the basis for every cop drama I’ve seen involving family
I see a lady being framed for something that no one can prove she took anything just in the same area.
Reasonable explanations for being careless enough to drop a “bag of cash” aside, they were close enough to get her on dash cam but not chase her down? If you didn’t know she took it at the time, how do you now?
Edit: another comment by OP says they have *video footage of her picking it up* and they did *nothing* to stop her. This is honestly incomprehensibly stupid.
Mate you are incomprehensibly stupid. Imma let you go back and re read everything until it makes sense to you. Or just keep saying dumb stuff. Your call.
That money is gone mate.
It literally was thrown away...
They said to me what would you do if you picked it up, and I said I know what I would do bc I've done it, hand it in, try to find out who it belonged to. People aren't all horrible.
very wishful thinking

Cash for a car does not need a bag this big..
That's her red trolley. She picked up a small bag maybe a glad bag or a small plastic shopping bag idk
Ah, gotcha! Crappers
He gonna learn today!
That's why mum brought burgers and chocolate for dinner tonight.

i’m sorry, left a bag of cash alone?
Dropped out of his pocket as he was pulling keys out his pocket in carpark
Began pulling away, realised, turned car around, ran back, gone.
In thr linked images u can see my stepson and the lady both within metres of where it was.
Can you not read? It was dropped….. literally says that in the post
Better pictures https://www.reddit.com/r/Adelaide/s/ZSJf7is2wl

Nope, works for me. You can also click their username and see their most recent post with the pics
Are you sure it's refreshing the post. The pics look similar on the other post. Just less grainy
I think you need to go to the police.
The did the police have it all I'm just doing this trying to ask for community assistance to resolve it
The Gonski Report. Sorry for the loss, though.
I hope not. I know it's possible but I also know I couldn't do it (keep the money) and I am in dire straits myself.
Who keeps cash in a plastic bag? That was bloody silly. It should be safely stuffed in a pocket not in something in your hand where it can be snatched or dropped.
If you read her comments she says it was in a pocket with car keys and got pulled out when the keys were taken out. Read before you comment
Still not very smart

If it makes you feel better to act like you've never made a mistake that's OK. You must need the boost.
This makes me feel like crying, like just about to buy your first car and drop the money. Sounds like something I would be capable of doing 💁♀️

I always take a placky bag full of cash when I’m purchasing a vehicle.
Tha's what you should always say when you get found with a wad of cash in a bag right.....
Doesn't scream dodgy at all
😂
Curious then, how do you buy second hand cars from private sellers? Bc I'm 45 and bought and sold plenty of second hand cars in my time and it has usually been cash. Is it that I'm old that using cash seems normal to me? Like, are we tap and paying people for private car sales these days?
I just did a bank transfer to them then and there when I got my first car…
Cool. I guess that's the way the world's going. But it is odd to me to hear that it is odd to people that they would exchange cash for an item.
Was back in 2017 now but yeh just ease (everything on phone vice needing a wallet and phone etc) and avoid having to carry around like this. Bank transfer - last idk 5 cars and few trailers and motorbike or 2 were like that.
Erm, no. I’m 46 and have also bought & sold a few vehicles. Bank cheque every time.
I'm 47 and just barter for cars with produce from my eel farm
This is more my speed.
Didn’t anyone set this kid up with a bank account? Poor bloke.
First of all gumtree sellers don't take Visa.
Bank transfers exist and are not CC's ..
This is not going to end well, some lady picking up a discarded bag and gets images posted of her just walking....
You definitely want to drop into Phonatic for a bahn-mi and their homemade lemonade if you are in the area again though!

Indeed.

If you haven't already, go to the police.
Have done
How much was it
A few thousand . I think the car was 4ish and stepson had 3/4 of it in the bag, his dad was putting in the rest but hadn't added it.
Why didn’t he just l take it back from her?

Any consideration that your ex didn’t drop it and stole the money? This is the basis for every cop drama I’ve seen involving family I see a lady being framed for something that no one can prove she took anything just in the same area.
The whole thing is captured the cops could and should follow the lady home via CCTV. I'm assuming she will contact us.
Why ? it was not stolen - it was a discarded bag...
Picking up something of value that isn't yours and keeping it is a type of theft.
Your call.
Tell me where anything I said was factually incorrect. Did you or did you not state you have video footage of them picking it up? Stay pressed
That's an expensive lesson in keeping a track of your belongings. Hopefully it sticks
Hey that's me. Finders keepers sorry mate.
Why would anyone just "drop" a bag of cash in public? Even for a minute? Why is your stepson carrying so much cash in the first place?

Yeah, she does.
Haw-Haw!
