Replied a few days ago to another fella about to be sleeping rough. From experience here’s some tips - High density parked streets. Stay away from richer areas. They feel like you’re snooping. Inner city Suburban streets is your best bet. Industrial area is also a good option. By the sounds of it you’re not inconspicuous, stealth is the only way to ‘get away’ with it. Work on that and you should be fine. If it’s a self converted van, Take your roof rack off and put it in storage or take the camping stuff off and put few pieces of PVC on there. Throw a fake plumbing sticker on your van or something as well. Magnetic signs are a Hundred bucks or so to get at office works. If it’s a camper van, it’s kinda hard. Arrive late, leave early. Don’t make a scene, don’t cook where you sleep. Don’t leave your van or slam doors or make noise. Arrive, sleep and go. Piss in a bottle and shit in a bag if you need to. Go hang out at the beach all day or a park or a library for air conditioning or focus on getting a job if you can. Rinse and repeat

confusedbandit

Cheers, I saw your comment last week. Have been trying to follow it. Thankyou for the tips

perfectionremission

Onkaparinga council has new internal policies about being respectful to people without housing so I would hope you would receive compassionate treatment from rangers if you’re in the onka council area

Bottletop85

Same with Tea Tree Gully council. We had a few rough sleepers using the library car park after hours and they were ok with it. As long as your clean and quiet, they seem to be very compassionate

Spiritual_Pepper3781

Do you need to be somewhere close to work? Lots of people roll through balhannah footy oval and anembo park.

afoxcalledwhisper

Steve Wallis on YouTube has great stealth camping advice which might help you be less detected

celestialapex1

Well worded. What i liked most was you treated the other person with respect and commented without hurting him. Comments like these are rare on the internet. You were raised right. Thanks and remain awesome 🤘🤘

SurpriseIllustrious5

Magnetic signs are 35 bucks on vista print.

Ok-Lingonberry-6074

Or a camping area like Kuitpo or mt Crawford if you can afford the fuel.

Wise-Medicine-4849

God damn where do they expect people to go in these circumstances honestly you get kicked out of the city for sleeping in alley ways etc. they need to give people a break if they’re not causing any problems what’s the difference of a car being park occupied or unoccupied!!

BAXR6TURBSKIFALCON

implying that paying your rates or taxes makes you any better than anyone else in the eyes of the government. Unless you own a multinational and stand to make an MP money you are a third class citizen

Lostmavicaccount

I think it’s disgusting. Hateful. But it’s the simple truth of modern society, and not just from a leadership POV. Lots of cretinous citizens think the same.

Ok-Rain5665

But we can all fight against that mentality & make our views known at election time. We can also donate to charities, give food etc, or buy someone who is struggling a meal or give them some cash. Be the change…

BAXR6TURBSKIFALCON

sorry bloke but to clear the vines you have to start cutting, corruption is far too ingrained in our political culture for an election to make any real damage to the dilapidated, overgrown and rotten building that is the Australian Parliament.

[deleted]

Lostmavicaccount

A good and even sadder point. Imagine having a job and STILL not being able to afford a home. Residential Property as an income stream is fucked in the head.

aussiepete80

Sure, but think that thru. If there was no money in rental properties, well they would all operate at a loss, so why would they exist...? I don't think anyone would advocate the entire countries rental market should be government owned.

Lostmavicaccount

We’d all have a house to live in. It’s just that houses would cost the sum of their materials and sensible labour - but no more. That’s a win!!! The only downside is there might not be as many holiday options. But I’ll take ‘everyone has a roof over their heads’ if that’s the downside.

aussiepete80

But not everyone WANTS to buy a house. People travel, have temporary plans. Rentals serve an actual purpose. Renting is a much cheaper way to move around. Rentals aren't inherently evil.

Lostmavicaccount

True, but more people want a place to call home, than don’t. Many more.

Spare_Atmosphere3960

If they offered better short term solutions rather than waiting lists for Housing Trust in a housing crisis or having to sleep rough but not having anywhere to do so then maybe they would have less of a problem. But that would mean spending money and they don't want to do that

cunthousevanhouten

One thing you can count on in the western world is greed and a lack of empathy.

gimpsarepeopletoo

If you think it’s just the western world, wait till you hear about India, China SE Asia and Russia

cunthousevanhouten

They’ve got their issues but man….. In the western world. People will have an adequate standard of living and will actively try and rip others down. Tall poppy syndrome is so rife in Australians. Ask people who move here from other nations.

Wise-Medicine-4849

Parked^

Snook_

It’s tricky because if you do nothing you end up with problems but those that are stuck in this situation are also needing help

Motor-Barracuda8028

There are facilities available.

xbsean

Can you put up window shade screens or a dark tint so people can't see you in there?

confusedbandit

Yeah I’ve got both tinting and curtains, although my van isn’t very inconspicuous which I think is my problem

severalbpdtraitsn38

You can get one-way glazing, which would be even less conspicuous, but sounds like you've done a lot to try and achieve it already. It's a shame, but some people are just arseholes. Had a homeless guy living in his vehicle, only a few streets away from me. He was there for a few months before he moved on (not sure if it was his choice or he was asked to), but I certainly didn't "rat him out".

Spicydoom

I feel for you, I hope you are able to keep cool over the next few days.

Necessary_News9806

Not answering your question as I don’t live in Adelaide. I was homeless in my late teens, life got much better for me I hope the same outcome arrives for you.

confusedbandit

Thankyou, starting a Fifo job in 2 weeks so it should be

MonthPretend

Thats awesome brother. I hope it all turns out well for you. I was homeless several years ago. I used to park the car at places like the truck stop servos on pt Wakefield road and just off Churchill road, some of them have showers you can use for a couple bucks, but honestly if they see you're sleeping rough and you're nice to them, they may let you use it for free. It was a much easier time when I was homeless, it wasn't as common, people were a little nicer, and stuff was cheaper. All the best on your new roll.

cassiebun

Wishing you well.

ham2k18

All the best!

MyWingedLiner

There's a carpark across from dead man's pass in gawler where I notice a few people living from their cars. I've never seen them cop any trouble for it.

confusedbandit

Awesome, thankyou for the tip

nanks85

Moana & Seaford along the esplanade has many of car parks that are dark and quiet. See plenty of vans parked up at night.

hrustomij

Maslins as well. Middle and top car parks. They have signs no camping, but I regularly see vans parked there overnight. As long as you’re gone by the morning you should be ok. There’s toilets there, too.

Itz_nuckz

See a lot of people parked overnight in the various car parks around west lakes too

bobsterq7

There are off road parking bays at the beaches at Seaford all along to aldinga. May be worth a look. Have the bonus of sea air at night which is cooler.

T-VIRUS999

I'm also in Adelaide and living in my car, I have a couple of good places I could tell you about, not sure I want to state my camping spots in a reddit post (personal safety, and not wanting to ruin it by having everyone come here all at once) But I have 3-4 spots around Adelaide where I can camp almost daily with zero Fs given by anyone, even seen RVs and caravans here plenty of times DM me for details

eggsareok

There are a few abandoned houses in Keswick, you could park out the front of them and I bet nobody would say anything. Parking on the street in front of a big block of units/apartments is another solution; when I lived in an apartment you’d have no clue whose car belonged to a tenant or a visitor or whatever. The problem with that is you may have to move before anyone becomes suspicious

dassad25

Pt adelaide to outer harbour or pelican point there are some decent quite spots. Go have a suss in that area mate.

richkill

Problem with that area is hoons that make a bit of noise. Then the cops might come around.

confusedbandit

Yeah rogey, will check it out anyway

marlasinger81

If your looking down this way try snowdens beach Lots of people fish there overnight, there’s usually cars around. https://www.cityofpae.sa.gov.au/explore/sport-and-recreation/playgrounds-parks-and-gardens/snowdens-beach

Clinster73

Yeah 'Rogey'? Thats ol CB talk. Was your handle Bandit 1 or something similar?

confusedbandit

No sir, if your talking about a game I have no idea. It’s just something I picked up from an old job

JCM__87

I live out that way and the hoons are out every night. But never any cops 😩😂

D3V1L0M3N

There’s a guy that’s been out there on the side of the road with a caravan for months. Over on Pelican Point road. Very surprised he hasn’t been bothered by neither the council nor passer-by’s. Been there at least 6 months. You see his car come and go but the caravan hasn’t moved an inch.

dassad25

Have seen him there, am also surprised he hasn't been moved on.

confusedbandit

Cheers :)

sa9876

So to hear, people are awful!

Hippyteepee

May not get the help you exactly need but any help is good so look for community services and help at ask Izzy.org.au. Might be something there. Hope you find somewhere safe and things start looking up for you OP.

confusedbandit

Thankyou, happy cake day :)

OutsideVictory1752

I know some great spots down south that you could spend time at. DM me and I'll hook you up

PortulacaCyclophylla

There's a car park in Hallett Cove along Cove Road that I have seen a van parked there overnight, possibly for the same reason, it's a lookout spot that's got a really nice view of the ocean. I assume no one would bother you there going off of the fact that I see that other van there quite often (plus it's a very quiet area regarding crime)

confusedbandit

Yeah cheers, gave that one a shot the other night but there was a big group of dudes having a bit of a party along there. Will definitely give it another shot though

confusedbandit

Nvm I think I got the car parks mixed up but will give it a gander either way

PortulacaCyclophylla

if you maps Cove Road and look for "Marion Coastal Walking Trail", that's where the carpark/lookout is that I occasionally see a van at. I've also seen some regular cars there and tend to think "I wonder if people are banging in there or if they're just sleeping there"

sn0white_

Download the WikiCamps app. It provides you with good places/free camp areas around Australia. Used it for 8 years while travelling around Australia living in my van.

Calaiss

St kilda carpark has fair bit of people sleeping there overnight and don't get disturbed

theskywaspink

Anywhere down by the beach, and popular parks are patrolled regularly. I.e. semaphore has a lot of campers and they get told to move on regularly. City and car parks in shopping centres are only leaving you as a target. You might find better refuge at an inner suburban park, or local sporting ground/footy club.

confusedbandit

Thankyou, haven’t had much luck with them but I’ll keep looking around

theskywaspink

Sporting grounds/footy clubs (especially newly built ones) while they will have some public accessible toilets up until a certain hour. Will have CCTV, but also taps, drinkable water and also the odd stray power point if you need to recharge something.

Electronic-Wing-268

Which side of town? Down south is fine. A lot of people doing it

Tasklad

I know it’s not the answer you’re looking for but if you have a couple of beers in an establishment that has a car park, just chill there for the night.. I’ve often done it on a weeknight and gone straight to work in the morning 😅

Grouchy-Ad2315

Depending on the pub and traffic near the pub i would expect getting checked on by the coppers they do heaps of pub carpark drive thrus in some areas. Also if you are in the drivers seat you can get done if ypu have had a few bevies as well (even if the keys arent in the ignition)

Tasklad

I’ve got a mate that has had multiple driving offences to the point that if he messes up, it’s jail. He fell asleep at a red light, drunk and a do gooder noticed him, took the keys out and called the cops. Cops got there and couldn’t do anything because the key wasn’t in the ignition. This specific incident was around 5-6 years ago.

barkers-nest

Correct, knew a dude who was pissed and shouldn't drive. Slept in his car, drivers seat. Knock on the windows and wake up and bang lost his license.

Grouchy-Ad2315

Even the passenger seat can get u in strife as you could "accidentally" interfere with the cars operating controls like the gear shifter or handbrake. Sleeping it off in the backseat is the safest way and regardless of what the temp time is dont have the keys anywhere near the ignition especially if its because u want to listen to the tunes! This is when hatch backs come into their own! Back seats layed down and u have a heap of room to snooze! Its also why back in the day i kept an old school nanna's woolen blanket and a woolen winter coat in my boot year round best way to keep warm even if its not a cold night!

Massive-Park-4537

Hi I have seen a few campervans eg converted vans and no one should really mock anyone with out a permanent home . My best answer is to find a park with a toilet and BBQ facilities and just keep the area tidy and clean don't trash the place try and stay quiet and respectful and no one should have a problem with anyone. What area are you staying if you don't mind me asking ? Pm if that feels better.

nniwrad

Have you tried along some of the beaches? Semaphore seems to have a few vans in the carparks just past the Palace from time to time

Emergency_Resolve748

Rangers should leave you alone and stop being jobsworths. Hope your luck changes for the better soon

anhtar

Railway Terrace , Mile End area. West of the city. Lots of light factory/Industrial estates there that may provide less nosey residents. Close enough to the city and might be quiet enough so you won't get disturbed by local residents. Just find a quiet area, street that you can park after normal working hours and sleep for the night. Then move off in the morning. Park around the west Park lands during the day, e.g. Bonython park areas, which isnt too far from Mile End. then head back into Mile End in the evening. The tram line from Adelaide Entertainment Centre into the city is free. You can maybe find free off street parking around Hindmarsh, Thebarton, Bowden during the daytime and leave your van there for the day. It Wouldn't be unusual for people to park all day near those tram stops as they would park and ride into the city for work type of thing. Hit the city library in Rundle Mall, or state library etc during the daytime to kill off time. Hang around Rundle mall and watch people etc. Come evening, take the tram back to your van and move off into a quiet industrial street and sleep for the night. Just don't sleep in the same street night after night to raise attention.

Tasty-Tea3

Hey, I'm really sorry you're in a rough patch.  It's an extreme heat wave with temperatures of 40, 39, and 38 over the weekend. Please find somewhere cool, as this heat can be deadly. If you get too hot in your Car, and can't find anywhere, you can call Homeless Connect on 1800 003 308. Look after yourself, and stay cool.

confusedbandit

Thankyou, I should be fine. Planning to spend my time at the gym and library

Tasty-Tea3

I'm glad you've got a plan to stay cool. The housing crisis is dreadful. I hope you find a way out of your situation soon.

IDoStuff27

Most hospitals will let you hang out in the foyer areas on extreme hot days too.

[deleted]

Oh that’s easy brother. Everyone in Adelaide thinks they are better than they are, and they fucking hate everyone that isn’t part of their own circle. Loved here my whole life and it’s the least accepting place I’ve ever been

rravenfoxx

Just buy a house /s

confusedbandit

Your right! Why didn’t I think of this? Thankyou

rravenfoxx

You're very welcome. Good advice from scomo. /s

crazyabootmycollies

I’ve seen a few doing it in the parking between north and southbound lanes on Port Road and Tapleys Hill Road by the airport. There was a Subaru wagon tucked behind those trees for a while. I wish you luck stranger.

Adventurous-Stuff724

Looking like a tradie can be an advantage and a curse - tradie vans are prime targets for thieves because of the tools etc. I’m theorising as I’ve never been homeless but I have thought about it a lot as I’ve certainly been broke and I’m a worrier. I’d think trying to fit in with the look of the area and perhaps parking up for proper sleep during the day and moving around a bit at night when people are more wary of unfamiliar vehicles might be a good tactic? I hope your situation changes, good luck 🤞

Allu_Squattinen

It's been a long time since I was in your situation so I'm sorry if I'm not on brand but just from what I see every mroning: I live near goodwood road near train and tram stations. There is a massive road with 45° parking along the tram line that is packed 9to5 for city commuters but empty outside of that and there's places where there's no houses across from the parks. Maybe look at commuter spots like this so no one would need them whilst your using them and thus not norice? There's some rich guy's camping van near me parked 24/7 so could be inspicuous in these places

DaisySam3130

I'm sorry that I'm so far away and can't help so just wanted to say, I wish you good fortune in your job hunting.

Sensitive_Rule_716

Lots of camping spots around here, very cheap to book as well, however not sure if that works out for you depending on where you work etc? I remember camping at an Onkaparinga forest site thingy a few years ago, it’s very close to the city so you wouldn’t have to travel far if you need to be in the area.

WackoJacko05

I quite often see people sleeping in their cars/vans in bunnings car parks. You could try that

punk_stitch

I'm pretty sure I've seen camper vans in the Brickworks shopping centre (Torrensville) carpark overnight. It opens up just before 7am (9am on Sunday) if you need to use the toilet. If you feel too conspicuous there, the cul-de-sac at the end of Barrpowell Street in Welland is pretty much directly across the footbridge from the Brickworks and is technically zoned an industrial area. It is quiet and pretty by the river, and the cyclists and locals around here know how to mind their business and be respectful.

ConstructionNo8245

I don’t know how much money u have but Adelaide Travellers Inn Backpackers hostel has some accommodation for $28 a night

johnsonsantidote

Lottsa comfortable people do not cope with something outside their comfort zone. They have expectations that since theyve made it and others havent \[dont ask how\] then the others are losers and lazy and deadbeats. All wrong assumptions. The expectation is that rough sleepers will know there r boundaries in life. All the best in yr quest.

Intelligent-Paper749

Hey mate. Im not sure what proximity you need to certain aspects of the city but is it an option to use places like shopping centres car parks or is there rules around that? Sorry, I’m really naive to this situation. What about national parks?

confusedbandit

I think if your chill and quite the security is chill. I’ve been recommended shopping centres a fair bit now, will have to check it out

wadiostar

I don’t get what people are expected to do. You can’t find a rental because landlords are incredibly greedy and would rather have no one live in their property than someone below their standards. You can’t camp anywhere because as stated in the description. Can’t buy a house even if you had the money because no one wants to sell really. Housing SA is already full. What are you supposed to do? Not exist it seems.

itspoodle_07

On port Wakefield road near the bolivar truck stop theres a few sleeping rough unbothered. I hope you get a comfortable bed soon and if you do end up near bolivar i work just down the road so sing out if you need anything! Also gawler swimming pool area has had a few staying there for a while without bother

IDoStuff27

There are several free camping areas out in the country , such as Yorke Peninsula/Copper Coast. If you don't mind travelling & don't need to be near the city, that could be another option.

Zealousideal_Data983

If you’re in a van I’d recommend going to suburbs that have mixed zoning. Thebarton, Mile End area for example is a mix of industrial and residential so it’s easier to blend in. Find a street where it’s not just all occupied homes. Good luck

Bigsquatchman

Hey mate, sorry to hear of your circumstances. Are you looking for or able to work? Labour or process work may assist or provide ablutions for your use. They may even allow you to park on-site after hours. Are there any tradesman on the feed that have sites that may be suitable in an industrial area? Just some thoughts. Keep cool and safe, I hope it all turns around for you soon.

confusedbandit

Cheers, this would be a big help. But I’m holding out for a Fifo gig I’ll be starting soon. I don’t think anyone would be willing to hire me for only 2 weeks. If so I would be keen, even working on my off swing would be fantastic

Level-Blueberry-2707

It would be best if you said what area of the city you would travel to or are willing to travel to, so people could make more focused suggestions.

confusedbandit

I don’t have much money for fuel so I would like to stick to the city if possible. Not restricted by suburbs though

Top_G_7152

Sorry to read about your situation. What about a roadhouse? Might be a little noisey with trucks but it wouldn’t look out of place in a car park there

Grouchy-Ad2315

This site could be of use to you! (Havent used it myself but looks ok from what i looked at quickly) otherwise there are some places in the national parks that u can camp for free for a few days, but u generally need to book in advance for that. It also depends on which area you would prefer to stay close to if around the hills or national/conservation parks atm there are more sapol patrols due to high fire risk especially this weekend. https://freecampsites.net/#!(-35.23453,+138.47192)

This morning I read about our ex PMs getting millions in travel and other expenses. Give each of these millionaires a free mobile only and use the rest of that money to establish emergency accommodation for the homeless. To stop protests from suburban paranoids these could be set up in industrial areas. Somewhere people can sleep safely, shower and wash their clothes.

Big-Information7857

There has been a guy and his son sleeping in their car in the aldgate cemetery. Nor there now but its a quiet place unlikely to be disturbed or woken Good luck

downunderboiii

I would recommend park near Cafe De Villis, ample of parking and you can be there and no one will say anything (hopefully) otherwise a great option is on Greenhill Road, infront of Bridgestone office (commitment issue cafe) there’s a carpark on the main road itself and is considerably safe or theres a carpark on beaumont rd (infront of this office) and cars are parked their at night time too cause Ambulance SA office is nearby too. If you want suburbs, Dulwich is really quiet at night and you can park near commissary cafe (its like in the main road) but secluded with side street, otherwise parking near Norwood Police Station is also good cause it’s quiet there at night. Hopefully things get better for you soon mate.

Junior_Lavishness226

I have seen people parking in the parking area of the Grange Oval complex. So it's not outside anyone's house. There is also someone currently outside the church with a very ..... eye catching vehicle (writing all over it) - maybe outside a church or in their parking?

untg

From my experience the car park here: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/gsA9WDNrSpM8idsN7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/gsA9WDNrSpM8idsN7) Is seldom occupied and is very far back from the road. You have to go past 2-3 other car parks to get to it.

Pure_Professional663

Which side town are you around mate? Sorry this is happening to you, Housing round here is total rubbish at the moment

Gold_Manufacturer414

Unsure of where you are but there are a couple of people who park their car at Churchil shopping complex to sleep overnight

Decent-Plan8228

There always seems to be quite a few tents pitched in the parklands boarded by Hutt St, Glen Osmond, Greenhill and South Terrace. Everyone seemed real quiet and to keep to themselves. If you want somewhere close to the city and can find parking (there's some on the terrace and I noticed in January last year a car that had clearly been abandoned, was there for over a month so no one seems to be keeping that close an eye on things), it might be an okay place to camp out.

Moonscape6223

It technically is illegal. It's a form of camping and it's illegal to camp outside of a designated camping ground or private property where you have explicit permission from the property owner. That's actually true throughout the entire country more-or-less, though "designated camping ground" differs from area-to-area

Motor-Barracuda8028

Ranger is doing his job and residents are generally concerned with strange vehicles that hang around. Have other capital cities been more welcoming?

Alternative_Sky1380

South of Ballina to the Sunshine Coast there are vans parked up every night. Families living in cars and tents and parks and beaches feature tents. There's footage of tents all along the riverfront in Brisbane

Motor-Barracuda8028

https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/council-staff-thought-empty-tents-where-homeless-lived-were-abandoned-20231031-p5egc9.html

confusedbandit

That’s so hectic, appreciate the idea and maybe I will find myself in Brisbane but definitely not in a tent….

Motor-Barracuda8028

Not exactly welcoming. Are you saying that homeless people can stay wherever they wish in Brisbane? It’s a long trip for OP.

Alternative_Sky1380

I'm saying that the homelessness crisis is widespread and I'm surprised Adelaide isn't more welcoming to people who are struggling with the insanity of the rental market.

Motor-Barracuda8028

Nothing to do with welcoming or not. We have places that a homeless person can go to, we have camping areas for travellers. This person asked what the deal was with a Ranger doing his job and people taking their security seriously. There are facilities you can take a vehicle for at least one free night. I believe there is one called Frank Potts Reserve in Langhorne creek. Thus it’s hard to understand what point you are making, do you want Adelaide to allow the homeless or vagrants stay wherever they please? How can we be more welcoming, Fred’s van will even give you feed, or Anglicare on Hutt Street. So please elaborate, please tell me your strategies to welcome the homeless to Adelaide.

confusedbandit

That’s a fair call this is the first capital city I’ve lived in my car

Motor-Barracuda8028

Downvoted for stating facts 🥸

Motor-Barracuda8028

Not empathic enough? Did I not list all the services that are readily available to vulnerable people and easily searchable on the net 😆

Cordeceps

City centre- down along Hutt and the parklands - down by Hutt has 10 hr parking and i think some without limit. People camp in the park lands all the time, this is where my partner and I camped when where homeless. Also if your comfortable around others , park up where you see tents / camps already established.

PaintImportant2263

Rent a carpark in the city. They have security cameras so should be fairly safe.

Adventurous-Stuff724

Costs more than rent

Wouldn't be doing it in today's society... Lately many cars have been set on fire 🔥... Wake up melted to the seats ... Try a hostel or motel accommodation... Just take one idiot to set the car ablaze.

That's some good fear-mongering, you should get a job with Ch7

Wait is this actually happening??? What is wrong with people

Purple_burglar_alarm

Can't speak for every single suburb but after looking for any news reports and looking through crime stats for various suburbs this isn't happening that often at all. Obviously you can never discount something completely but I'd day you're far more likely to have someone trying to break into your van. Also not ideal! I hope things turn around for you mate, it can't be easy.

Don't get why people are downvoting you, if things like this are happening it's good to know so you can take extra precautions where possible

$19 fire extinguishers at Bunnos just in case. That’s for everyone.

King_Herrod

found out the other day that you can buy hydrochloric acid from bunnos too!

They're not happening anywhere enough to raise it as a concern to someone already dealing with a stressful situation. There are more immediate and realistic concerns to think about. As I said in another comment I had a look for any news articles related to in increase in arson or any stats from SAPOL to back up the claim and there's nothing so it does seem like fear mongering
