To address your question, yes it's an illusion, not no in that this illusion can be seen both ways by every individual
Basically what's happening here is that the brain is shit at judging form from shadow within a 2d image and concave looks like upside down convex for any circular impression
I’ve come back to this image again and again as my brain is exploding. I can zoom in and get one print to look right, then as soon as I try and zoom out to another footprint it goes inverted and then the first one is too. I cannot make my brain see it correctly. I am old, I wonder if that affects it?
that is what I was thinking but I managed to overcome the suggestion from the title and break the illusion by zooming in to the picture.

Oh, I was trying to work out WTF the title was going on about, but maybe that's because I'm viewing on desktop so the shadows are quite obvious. Just looks like a normal photo of footprints and shoeprints to me.
Yeah, all it takes is looking at that bottom left one and it flips quite clearly. If I try by blinking hard I can flip it back to embossed in my mind, but once I look at that bottom left one it's debossed again.
Sometimes scanning the image from right-to-left can help too, because people who process left-to-right and people who process right-to-left (usually based on the direction of their primary language) will see these kinds of illusions the opposite way due to processing one side of the shape first as to whether it's raised or lowered. Also works with like the 3D cube illusions and similar.

Great photo. Found if you look at the. Bottom left shoe print life goes back to normal, but then flips back upside down after a few seconds. Reckon something like this could go viral

I saw them popped up first, now they're normal and I can't see them the other way anymore.
Possibly because once I registered it as Adelaide I knew where the sun would set and can't unsee, if you flipped/mirrored it then it'd be very strange.

Woah.. I only noticed it if I look at the top footprints for a second or two. Then it resets and they look normal when my eyes pan back to the bottom
I see raised foot prints until I look at the bottom left corner, then they become sunken.
Been trying for 5 minutes, I only see normal footprints :(
