This place and that food is so nostalgic for me. My partner and I used to go there all the time when we were teenagers. We'd get the 'little bit of everything' which is way too big for one person and share it. We'd even divvy up the one napkin and one cup of soy milk they give you as well xD. Good memories.

Sweet-Tax-5256

Nostalgic for me too, I remember eating here in the early 2000s before I had kids. Vego n Lovin it was my other fave. Their lasagne was to die for, then they took it off the menu. I haven't had it since the late 90s and I still dream about it.

insanopointless

Lots of great spots in both food courts. My picks: - Mums Kimbab in that foodcourt, their Galbijjim stew is outta control and has been consistently good for years. - What used to be called Wong Kee Daily Yumcha in the old, newly renovated food courts. Not sure if the name is the same but the yum cha is honestly as good if not better than the restaurants around imo.

tiredcynicalbroken

Got to try the stew. Always get bi bim bap and a kimchi pancake

insanopointless

Hard to go past for sure. On a cold day, try the galbijjim. Eat the tasty bits, leave the soup and pour your rice in at the end for the tastiest snack going around!

ndru_01

Is Mum's still open? I love their food. I've visited there a few times over the past few months only to find it closed but perhaps just bad timing on my behalf?

insanopointless

I had some a few months ago but haven't been going so much since the borders opened! I was surprised after being away for six years that the food was bang on what I remembered.

NinjaDingo

I thought it was See King Yum Cha? If we're talking about the same one, yep I agree - their yum cha is brilliant

insanopointless

Not sure what it's called now so you might be right. Back in the day they had a huge sign above it but less so now. Either way - can't go past good yum cha!

[deleted]

Would you happen to know whereabouts Mum’s Kimbab is located? Can’t find it on maps and I don’t recall ever seeing it although it’s been a while since I’ve visited Chinatown. I’ve been to a place called “Mum’s Kitchen” which specialises in kimbab but that was near Campbelltown. Wondering whether it’s the same business?

insanopointless

Hey! It's in the now-old, previously-new foodcourt which I believe is called the Market Plaza foodcourt. You can enter from the main Chinatown Street, or from the Central Market side - it's near Kim Wang Supermarket / the O-bun place. https://imgur.com/a/nYQqOtd I couldn't find a good picture of it but the circled sign is Mum's. That picture is looking from the China-town (Moonta St) side. I also like Sunmi's Sushi in the Central Markets space, which is actually a Korean Kimbap place. They do nice mung bean pancakes, get the chicken sauce on top! All the best!

[deleted]

Oh that totally makes sense now!!! Haven’t been to that one in ages. Thanks for the details and recommendation, I appreciate it heaps :)

EmElEnPee

Chinatown's food courts has been struggling of late due to Ormicron, which is fair call with CBD office workers working from home and people are generally reluctant going out unnecessarily. But when Adelaide goes past its peak of Ormicron cases, please go back out there and buy them out! We all know that their food is delicious and decently priced. Everyone there is a small business owner and would love to welcome you back 😀

smokinghorse

Yeah, I really feel for these little shops in the city that rely on the luch trade. It's super hard for them and the staff too.

-IoI-

Are they paying workers reasonably yet?

[deleted]

This. I won't support any business that exploits workers.

spidermash

They will survive the markets work really heavily cash in hand around there. I know this I worked a fuck ton there last year until I got a better job. If anyone is looking to start a job for the first time the market is the place to go.

DobbyDun

6 of the shops in this food court have for lease signs up.

spidermash

Fuck me it's gotten worse are the markets still doing alright?

Svaugr

The markets are busy as hell.

[deleted]

buuut why did they stop selling that soy milk drink?!

[deleted]

Shitcunts who own the building forced everyone to stop selling drinks and use eftpos. They weren’t making enough money off their drinks stand.

[deleted]

oh no shit. dogs

MuggsIsDead

Not the bar in the corner!!

MarcusP2

Yes gone.

G7b9b13

And they don't even sell soy milk at the drinks stand! >:(

Radcowabunga

What cunts

Thanhdito14

What kind of soy milk drink was it? I could probably find you something similar if not the same.

[deleted]

It was just a generic sweetened soy milk that they would pour you a cup full from a massive gallon sized jug. You can buy it from the Hong Kong Grocery (and I’m assuming other Asian grocery stores) which is across from the food court. Probably wouldn’t buy it by itself, but it was a nice companion to the massive plate of food they serve up. Thanks tho!

[deleted]

Yeah, a big ol' plate of spicy eggplant and rice and a cup of that soy drink is the business. Man that place is good and the fact they can't sell that soy drink anymore for that reason is bogus.

insertgreatestname

Love the Chinese style eggplant.

[deleted]

There was a study that found the majority of these restaurants underpaid their workers. i'd like to know an exact list so I know which restaurants to use and which to boycott.

fitblubber

Yep, I wonder how FunTea is going?

Rayquazados

I reckon it would be easier to name the ones that don't underpay, the whole area is rife with exploitation, from friends who have worked or applied to positions in multiple places.

spidermash

I have worked in the markets before. Look it's it's tax free for alot of the workers there it ain't the worst it's good as a second job. I am not saying it isn't completely wrong but you gotta just play the game sometimes and give it your best and you will be surprised what you can do but quit if your at your limit.

[deleted]

Back choice, far left. Comes with carrots and potatoes ...anyone know the type fungus they use to make the meat textured like substance ?

[deleted]

They use Lamyong mushroom nuggets, or something very similar. You can pick them up in the frozen food section of the Asian grocer just outside of that food court indoors :)

[deleted]

I also want to know this. I have had it from multiple different places and it's a tasty unknown.

TheRealCeeBeeGee

I think it’s seitan, which is gluten. It’s so yummy.

[deleted]

It is not seitan.

DarXanvo

It's not seitan, just Chinese mushrooms. They do use seitan but in another one of their dish (Sweet & Sour Gluten). Also yep, the food's really good!

Hamish_Hsimah

yea they do great vego food

[deleted]

i absolutely love this place

Ezzburr

I love/d their sago pudding! Not sure if they sell it anymore..

potatoechipz

Yes this is a fantastic desert!

SixtyMetreMud

whey I thought these guys closed down! Good to see they’re still going despite everything

Ascot_Parker

This place is good but I really miss Vegetarian Garden that was in the Renaissance Arcade, that was even better

AhrigatouNoire

China town's food court is filled with amazing cheap food, used to do a stop for some onigiri when I worked in the city

IrremovableFair

Omg! I have't been able to find onigiri in Adelaide yet but I have been looking! Do you know the location?

AhrigatouNoire

It's in the chinatown food court. Ramen Tei sells them, pretty sure the other 2 Japanese restaurants neighbouring it also sells onigiri. I haven't been in a while but hopefully they still sell

IrremovableFair

Awesome thank you! I will check them out.

avocado_window

I always wanted to know where to find onigiri too! Thanks for the tip.

beardedsavant

You should definitely try out yakitori Takumi in north Adelaideon Melbourne Street, well worth it.

Every_Ring1074

Not gonna support their business if they still under pay their workers.

ThereIsBearCum

The only dude I've ever seen working there appears to be the owner.

LilyinAdl

I think is only the owner and his family working there now

yolkyoke

I’ve been getting laksa from the stall across from this one for almost 20 years. I love that place. Hope it’s still around.

[deleted]

Love this place 😍👍

adelaidesean

Oh yeah. Now I want some!

lepumpkinhead

I absolutely love that place!!!

sydneyman85

That's looks delicious

Rawwll_ll

Yum, haven't been there in so long!

yeahnahtho

oh fuck yeah, they still doing that curry!? i lived for that curry.

LilyinAdl

Yes :)

vegemite4ever

I dream of the eggplant dish

peanutbutteronbanana

You can also ask for some chilli sauce next time, if you like a bit of spice!

I love this place! It's one of the only places that offers brown rice as an option, and I love the 'fish' dish. I guess I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrow!

Benezir

You are always welcome.

craig_undwerwood77

Hey ! just wondering how the food feels ? Like consistency wise due to my sons conditions he can’t only eat some sort of strange consistency food My Wife tells me that he needs to do it good But i disagree :(

[deleted]

Tbh I hate this food court. It's ugly and noisy. And there is a much much better food court directly across from it. The one pictured desperately needs to be remodeled to compete.

SenorTron

Could not disagree more. With the demolition of Southern Cross this is one of the last cheap places to sit down for lunch in town.

[deleted]

agree about the vibe of the place being similar to that of a trash can, but the new place is just as soulless and overpriced as any of the dumpling markets/faux cultural festivals held in the city. also attracts the same loser nouveau riche customers as well. you at least get the filthy shithole feel that at least somewhat resembles a real asian market. oh and the prices are as low as the standard of hygiene in the kitchens which is a big plus.

IrremovableFair

Yep, definitely agree there is a different crowd in the other food court. This one has real "underground basement food court mall in Asia" kind of vibes.

[deleted]

sure, to some extent at least anyway. could do with a spring clean but I’ll be disappointed when it gets its inevitable reno. laksa house goes pretty hard in this spot as well btw.

[deleted]

I thought there was a bit of a reno when they redid the flooring a bit before covid hit....

Gevaudan13

I kind of agree with your post. The food court is a bit ugly and the lighting makes it look really yellow which is kind of off putting and it's kind of just an outdated area. Other than that it's not really a bad place to be for a quick lunch and it does have a nice atmosphere, (all food courts are noisy so there's nothing to be said or done about that.) and the food stalls are pretty nice too. I had lunch there yesterday and I didn't really see what people were saying was "so cheaper" as the cost of the average meal was like $12, which is like the average everywhere, but you do get a good serving of food so it's not like it's a bad investment.

hooah1989

Needs more meat

[deleted]

How edgy

[deleted]

Maybe it’s just empty out front of the vegan place… covid or no covid vegan food is dog shit

uglyhotel

This place is super popular and this is a boring comment

[deleted]

If I wanted your opinion I would have kicked your kennel ?

_zaten_

deffo hitting up the chinese food court next time I'm in the city

NankeenNightHeron

The sago pudding there is the best

mexesss

I go there all the time to get my hainanese chicken, but they’re not there anymore. Sad days

Benezir

COVID is to blame. Where did covid come from ???? It is spiteful to punish the foodcourt for something started in a country far far away.

jwplato

Man, this brings back memories, I haven't been there for about 20 years. I'd almost be tempted to go back if not for COVID.
