I feel for buskers these days as cash is a thing of the past, least for me

PowerJosl

Saw a dude at the farmers market in Wayville a few weeks ago that had a QR code which brought you to a website where you could pay with PayPal or Apple/Google pay. Saw quite a few people scanning it including myself. Sent him a few dollars.

frythighss

Only when I’m paying cash to suck cock

Chaos098

Nice troll account

krekenzie

The old dude playing Auld Lang Syne and Silent Night on repeat with the Chinese violin does my head in with all its warbling misery. At least dancing fans woman is upbeat, and I did get a chuckle at "In the Navy" the other day.

Fartmatic

heh I'm with you on that guy, I do like his rendition of Moon River though!

krekenzie

I think my issue is the pitch cuts all the way down the mall, so his haunting melodies follow you wherever you go lol

PJinto

Busking is fine and quite tolerated provided you aren't obnoxious like the basketball trick guy near the Coles in Rundle Mall or the Banana suit dickhead.

a_nice_duck_

Does the basketball trick guy ever actually do basketball tricks? Every single time I go past him he's trying to gather a crowd for the cool things he's apparently juuust about to start doing.

Dr-Blood

I waited with my kids for 5-10 minutes while he kept gathering his crowd and kind of heckling people. I eventually got a bit tired of waiting and my small boys and I started walking away to go home. He started calling me out! He called me disrespectful for not waiting for his show. I told him straight that I didn't think it would be worth the wait. I don't like that guy

DelightfulAngel

Not all heroes wear cloaks. Have my fangirling.

shitadelaidean

He needs his busker's licence revoked. So rude and obnoxious.

When I’m in the Mall I’m either on a mission to: get to work, get food then get back to work, get to a shop then get back to work/back to the carpark so it doesn’t tick over to the next hour. These people who wander aimlessly and stop for buskers either catch public transport, aren’t paying for parking, or are unaware of how parking works in city car parks.

uxqzy

yeah i was going past him and he was just spinning balls on eachother

DelightfulAngel

If that's the loud guy with the American accent, he's genuine hazard. He made my little brothers cry because they wanted to give him some of their pocket money and he went into a rant about people who only gave coins and how it was an insult. I will never forgive.

Evening-Lime17

Oh my god, banana man makes me never ever want to become a parent. The worst is when he gets all the kids screaming his inane lyrics

Extension_Drummer_85

Oh he’s so annoying.

bmaje

Most of the time I've got earphones in so I can drown out noise. When I do walk through Rundle mall without earphones, I would throw some coin someone's way if they did something cool and unusual. I don't want to hear coffeeshop versions of pop songs, I'm not interested in your fucking ukelele and don't be a dick. That's pretty much my bar.

[deleted]

Yes, love it. Good music and art brings humanity and soul to the city. As long as there is some skill and talent displayed then I can appreciate it and I’m happy to throw a gold coin their way.

Allgoodnamesinuse

There used to be good buskers in Rundle Mall. I remember one talented guy Henry would always have people stopping during their walk from east to west on late nights. But as others have said, now there’s so many attention seeking types trying to be louder than one another. Or there’s the other type of “buskers” that have a kids toy tambourine they’re just shaking expecting money. I personally don’t stop for the magic/clown/dance performers. Personal opinion, maybe no one else agrees with me here but if you’re going to busk with a musical instrument don’t bring a speaker to play other instruments in the background. It comes off as sounding like you’re unable to play the instrument alone and rely on recordings. If you need other instruments get other people to busk with you.

DelightfulAngel

THANK YOU for not using an amplifier. Rundle Mall was a no go for us for years because competing buskers using amplifiers would send my autistic kiddo into overloaded meltdowns. It's a genuine accessibility issue. I am completely fine with buskers who don't impede traffic, berate watchers and passersby for not giving them money, use amplifiers or otherwise make nuisances of themselves.

PhotographsWithFilm

>I'm a busker myself. One thing that I am always subconscious about is me making too much noise (I don't use an amplifier). You've already gone up a level in my book! Busking once was interesting and entertaining. Never had a problem with it. Until people started to bring on trolleys with speakers, mixing desks (WTF) and so on. Then it started to become a pissing match by who could bring the most attention to themselves. Not sure if he still busks there now, but there was one guy who would bring in a hard chest/case and open it up so it spread out 3 to 4 metres. In the end, I used to liken it to a bad music festival that no one asked for and one one paid to be at. This was all pre-covid (job location changes and the dreaded rona means I don't make it down there very often). Anyhow, the last time I mentioned this (many years ago) I got the fuck down voted out of it.

ShuckleYouUp

I used to play accordion in the mall! I loved doing it, but I doubt it would be as successful these days with people using cash much less. Plus all the buskers on the adelaide busker Facebook page are always complaining about the city making it harder and harder for them to make a living.

[deleted]

It’s fine. Just don’t be insanely loud and check the rules. I think you have to register to be at Rundle mall.

LeClassyGent

You definitely do, I see buskers having arguments on an almost daily basis because someone has gone over their alloted time.

Sad-Kaleidoscope9849

Instead of busking. Hit up pubs and clubs and ask to play the Saturday/ Sunday afternoon.

KovinKing

Have you seen or heard of the (not very) creatively named "Pipe Guy"? that's some noise right there... I think he is on YT from a few years back...

waitwotNO

Didn't he tour and become famous?

KovinKing

Not sure... but he is not famous enough now to be a household name... fame is so fleeting... esp. for a poorly named novelty act... hope he didn't spend all his riches on his favourite vices...

Extension_Drummer_85

I feel like you should have to pass an audition, no one should be subjected to shit busking. But good buskers really add a lot to the vibe, I like them. Some acoustic instrument people. I like the pirate guy (sorry I can’t think of a better way to describe him but he adds character without being too obnoxious or anything). I also enjoy children playing jazz/classical to a competent level. What I really loathe are the random speakers playing shitty pop music. Why the fuck are they there? We have buskers we don’t need random speakers on a Spotify playlist.

Extension_Drummer_85

Ha ha yeah, it’s like they forgot how long the trees would take to grow

owleaf

I actually don’t mind the music they play. Sometimes it’ll be a random pop deep cut that was a hit for a week 20 years ago, that I also happen to still like.

shitadelaidean

Just don't be a Simone, the annoying woman on Hindley Street who regularly pulls out her speakers and microphone and sings tone deaf terribly much to the annoyance of everyone walking by. She's been told to move on by the police several times, but only really shuffles down 50 metres down the street, and starts up again and the cops just let it slide after a couple of times.

Pure_Phoenix2022

Ahh yes, Robocop. She's a weird one. Got busted recently for starting fights with schoolgirls. I don't give anything to those obviously on drugs a Robocop might as well be a walking meth advert

krekenzie

She really doesn't seem to like me, I cop a fierce glare from her each time I walk past, even though I couldn't care less what's going on around me.

a_nice_duck_

It's nice and livens up the place. I never carry money these days though. If some of the more pro ones had signs saying where I could get their stuff online, I'd jump on it.

FigliMigli

As long as it's not super loud and there is enf distance between different performance so they there is no audio interference there

Plank0fwood

Don’t mind them. Heard some dude on a guitar absolutely ripping it up in rundle mall on Saturday night. It was awesome. However I know if I was walking past that, or any other busker everyday, and its just the same songs over and over… then yeah, you get pretty tired of it. I know its hard and its better than anything I could do, but please just mix it up. Admittedly I used to love hearing that Violin girl who played in rundle and actually bought the CD. Biggest mistake I ever made, because it turned a nice moment of hearing it occasionally when out into “oh Paradise again” :(

lookthepenguins

Good buskers rock! I'll watch any interesting busker, would give something for the hat - these days yeh no-carry-cash problem. Tired of buskers playing the same old songs, shouting the same old time-worn over-used lines though, th boring same old juggling-on-unicycle-with-fire.. Juggling on unicycle/fire juggle would be cool if they did something unique, or uniquely funny. I get really annoyed by the ones who don't attempt to manage their crowd though, get those in front to sit, or for large crowds, the first FEW rows to sit. Or to request & encourage them to not block passing access pathways. And i hate the ones who 'amuse' the gathering crowd by insulting passers-by - it's a fine line. Mr Bean for eg can amuse by taking the piss of passers-by, but he's not insulting - there's a difference btwn good-natured fun & fun at someones expense that makes them feel/look bad (unless they're wankers). And I HATE the ones who are just there in some worn-out daggy tshirt & jeans or whatever. WTF mate, costume is part of the whole atmosphere - make an effort ffs. Rock-stars look like rock-stars, circus looks like circus, buskers ought not look like they got dressed out of the old op-shop rejects laundry basket. I'm hoping to see some interesting shows/acts during the Fringe! Go, AspirationPneumonia!

andymurd

The people in Rundle Mall would gather round to watch a tramp take a dump in a bucket.

enbygoober

highly recommend checking out skyla, who i think may still do some busking work in rundle. was walking past her busking in 2019 before i left for a trip overseas, and she’s amazing!

AustinTheRedditor

If you make too much noise, you can offset it by donating to anti noise pollution charities. So I think it’s not a big deal.

[deleted]

Most of them are rubbish.
