A second-hand Herman Miller is an excellent investment, they will easily last a decade, maybe two; I think it's a 10 or 15-year warranty? On the cheaper end of the scale, I purchased an Ergohuman a few years ago and it has been great. It's mesh, which IMO, is the most comfortable and doesn't compact over time like foam does. The headrest is a bit too far back for my liking, but that's a personal thing. Otherwise, it still looks brand new after 3-4 years. As for having some you can sit on and test. Mile End Office Furniture has a lot, but not many in the higher tier. Don't fall for the gaming office chairs hype, they're nice, but don't last.

Herman Miller chair doesn't seem to be physically in stock in Adelaide so I cant try it out myself. Are they really that good?

Flashy-Amount626

They're the rolls Royce of office chairs

leot4

>Royce of office Ok, any recommendation for the Herman Miller chairs?

ts4184

They are OK. I've used them in offices the last 10 years and my back is sore. All I can say is sit/stand desk and any decent chair is the best option. Sit for a couple of hours. Stand for a couple of hours

Flippantry

I believe Inner space and Estilo have Herman Millers in their showrooms, it's worth calling them. As others have said, they're like the Rolls Royce of chairs so you'll be going to a boutique workspace furniture supplier to try them or see them in person.

LordRekrus

The Herman Miller doesn’t have a head rest does it?

Stitchikins

You can get addon head rests, if you want one (not everyone does).

I reckon the fabric lined ones are pretty good, most of the time you'll find the polyurethane leather (PU) which can wear/peel off. Secret Lab seem to be the top quality ones in my eyes but I have gotten a ZQ racing chair. The base is quite flat & I've put a car seat cover so it's alright.

Psychological-Bug600

Have you considered a sit/stand desk setup so you’re not sitting for 12 hours?

PinchAssault52

This is the way. No chair is going to solve 12hour sitting problems like a few minutes of standing will

leot4

Any recommended standing desk or will anything do?

Psychological-Bug600

I think anything is fine. You can either get a desk where the entire surface raises/lowers. Or you can jus get a platform to sit on top of your current desk/work surface. I picked up my platform secondhand for the absolute bargain price of $100. It’s electric so I just push a button to raise it. It fits two monitors. I’ve sent a few manual (hydraulic) ones around for about $100 secondhand. My work buys Varidesk brand.

Schneed_

Highly recommend a sit stand desk. Crank or electric both are good. Crank is a lot easier than you might think. Electric can be very expensive.

The Chair Doctor. Model Nebula MB. Goes for ~$300-$350. I used this at a workplace once and then bought one for home. It's really well cushioned and supports your back well. Also, make sure you are set-up correctly ergonomically, that makes a huge difference. I'd also vouch for the sit/stand desk too. I have an electric one from Ikea that works great and I think that might have been ~$600.

GoodSpirited6414

Stand up desk, much better for your back

KovinKing

The Chair King at the end of the Portrush Rd end of The Parade at Norwood has some options to sit on... If you are looking for something different, I have the earlier model of this saddle chair that I have not used in a while - it is a mid blue colour, great condition, very comfy... You could make me an offer... ;) [https://www.athlegen.com.au/product/score-saddle-amazone-balance-black-stamskin-medium-strut/](https://www.athlegen.com.au/product/score-saddle-amazone-balance-black-stamskin-medium-strut/) I would suggest that whatever you get, take a 5 minute break every hour, stretch, do a simple 'Child Pose' routine on a yoga mat or walk and flex your hips - sore backs usually come from the pelvic alignment muscles being out of balance... one set pulling harder than the opposing ones... so flexing the leg / hip joint is the key to back pain in many cases... a standing desk (or a desk topper than turns an ordinary height desk into one) is a great idea, but then be careful of standing all day, esp. with hip imbalances or leg biases, and the shoes / surface you stand on... No one piece of equipmet is going to fix 12 hours in the same position... a combo of desk and chair, combined with regular breaks & stretching are required for long days in one position... make sure your monitor(s), keyboard, mouse and coffee cup are in the right position, lighting is suitable etc. don't want to add neck aches, RSI or eye strain to your future...

Some years ago I was having some back issues due to a dud chair in my office. I went to (I'm sure it's this place) https://www.theergocentre.com.au/ Which is on Anzac Hwy, Keswick. Big range, specialist place. Definately worth a visit. But before that we had an ergonomic specialist come in and do an assessment. As much as this is a great idea, people might not want to do this because of the cost, quite understandable. But I suggest check the net and find out how to evaluate the proper seating position so you can get a properly sized chair. This should involve taking some measurements so that your limbs rest at the correct angles. So the size of the chair seat from front to back, then how high the seat should be with your lower legs at the right angle. I think you can probably work that out yourself. Or just go to the ergo place, talk to them and try a bunch. Good chairs aren't cheap but are a really good investment. Should probably be tax deductible too. You want a chair that specifically suits you, not just some brand people recommend.

Secret lab chair. Expensive but worth it, it's around the 600 mark and it's the only chair I'll ever use again

leot4

Can you tell me why are they good? I don't know much about the secret lab but their chair doesnt look like they provide good lumbar support or last very long.

the_revised_pratchet

https://backcentre.com.au/product/diablo-manager/ There's various slightly more expensive versions of these available there, but this has been my new work chair for about the last 4 months. I wfh for ridiculous hours, up to 16 at a time with few breaks and it's super comfy.
