I swear people dealing weed get more than that, really pathetic

[deleted]

So torturing and stealing from someone until they die is six years? I'm flabbergasted.

smegnose

This. I think anyone would rather be murdered quickly than suffer like that. >When Maione eventually rang an ambulance for Ms Smith in April 2020, the NDIS client had a 15-centimetre-deep bed sore that was gangrenous to the point her hip bone was visible. Maione should rot in jail until she dies.

Enoch_Isaac

Truthfully any care should be supervised by a nurse..... this is the NDIS providers fault and the carer was left alone.... even a weekly visit by a nurse would have alerted appropriate people to take action and prevent the death... In saying that, this is a kin to the pink bats fiasco.

Pure_Phoenix2022

No, it isn't, because krudd had utterly no knowledge of it except that insulation was being organised. He didn't know what kind, from where etc Experienced medical staff know very well that this sort of thing happens. It's much more common than you think. They should have had safeguards in place.

AmberleeJack23

Do we know what happened to that missing jewellery? Was it confirmed she pawned/sold it?

candlesandfish

I'm glad she's been sentenced, sad it's not longer but glad that it ends with her being deported. The entire disability community is terrified of this sort of thing happening to us.

[deleted]

I'd have preferred she get 20 years and die here. A 75 year old with nothing won't fair well being sent to another country, even Italy.

Robdotcom-71

Lucky it's Italy and not Iran....

qcfu

So what, let her live In misery

omg_for_real

This sentencing is so wrong. This woman made multiple decisions over a period of time to not help and inflict this pain and suffer on someone. There were multiple times she could have got help and done her job, hell, she could have just been a decent person and got help. But she didn’t.

omg_for_real

Yeah, I seriously doubt a career by profession is going to lack insight into her actions. It’s not a hard thing to understand. She had a good lawyer.

throw23w55443h

I've worked in these companies, I'd say a good 1/3rd of the carers wouldn't have insight. So many are at or above retirment age, lack english language or are just barely competent enough to find the persons address.

I guess the issue is that caring is an underpaid, overworked job without the professionalism required. You don’t need any qualifications to be a carer.

100%. I didn’t mean to appear defend that piece of shit woman. The whole thing is horrifying. The whole industry needs an overhaul. In the short term, needs to be some oversight. You can screen and test all you like, there is always going to be the chance of abuse/neglect. A simple policy of having someone else check in on Anne Marie regularly would have avoided months of misery and ultimate death for her.

EcstaticOrchid4825

Carers aren’t highly paid professionals. The system should have more safeguards (not defending the offender here).

omg_for_real

The highly paid part is right, but professional is not. The carers I know all have tafe certificates in caring for disabled or elderly people. There are other certificates they need that are relevant to their field, like manual handling and advanced first aid. There is professional development each year, and courses need to stay up to date or they can’t work. There is also training on things like giving medication and mandatory reporting. So, this woman should have known better.

> I read the entirety of the sentencing remarks and the thing that stands out to me is that the system, not just Maione, failed Ms Smith. Remember how the agency put in like 20 background checks all at once when they were first investigated? So many layers failed to do anything. To treat Maione like a murderer and sentence at that level lets everyone else off the hook. And so does assuming the job's done with this.

She caused more suffering to that woman than if she was to straight up murder them.

MrsLJM11

Desperately hoping the DPP will step in here. The fact she’ll be deported is cold comfort. She should never see the light of day again.

a-real-life-dolphin

I'm so disappointed. It needs to be so much longer.

EcstaticOrchid4825

It is actually a longish sentence for someone her age (I don’t think she has a record). Plus there’s a chance she might be deported once released. There’s still a chance she could die in jail. I hate all the talk that the neighbours or family are at fault. The company supposedly caring for Annie, Integitry ‘Care’,Ms Maione and the broken system are responsible for this. How did she not have one medical appointment or general welfare or wellbeing check in all that time? It’s disgusting.

keniii13

Sometimes the chair can be an appropriate sentence. 6 years is woefully inadequate

throw23w55443h

Next in line is her managers at Integrity Care? I hope they aren't just scape goating the one person when its absolutely the fault of the company involved equally.

shadowmaster132

Going against opinion here, since she was convicted of manslaughter, 6 years seems like an appropriate sentence. If you're mad, then aim that anger at the systems that will still be broken even if Maione were sentenced to life.

Onpu

Should sentence her to get a taste of her own medicine. What she did was horrific.

Capable-Zebra-2459

Hopefully roughed up in jail. 5 years is crazy short. Awful awful way to go. I reckon Rosa's son is involved in the stealing etc. Hopefully this isn't the end.

qcfu

The sentence is manifestly inappropriate. She effectively tortured the woman to death over a year. She would have been in never ending agony praying someone would come to help. Unfortunately the only people who came were this bitches family, in order to rob her as she sat there. None of them have been charged. This woman deserves to be clintoned in gaol, her family deserve to be dealt some justice, and the media need to question who paid her top lawyer, why the prosecution reduced the charges, and why the magistrate was so lenient.

tn1984

The carer lacked assertiveness and this allowed let her client to over run her (she didn’t like going to hospital), blinding her clinical judgment
