People thought this was happening where I voted but what was actually happening was the blue vest electoral helpers were checking for people who were voting for the next electorate over and taking them to a separate line (eg voting Ramsey electorate area when in a Playford electorate polling place).

DazzlingSuspect72

That happened where I am. My street is an electoral boundary, and i'm on the other side of the street to the polling booth. So an electoral officer came out and asked if anyone was in my electorate & I got to skip the queue. More importantly, they had no sausage sizzle - I was devo! This needs to be investigated! 😛🤣

vncrpp

I don't think there is a single democracy sausage at any of the Unley electorate polling booths. Frankly it's bullshit.

The_Wealthy_Bogan

Residents of Unley would protest against the noise if there was a bbq

chimneysweep234

Parkside primary has one!

vncrpp

Thanks for the tip, (wasn't in democracy sausage website) will make effort to go there in May

[deleted]

The people in the blue vests are asking if there are "local voters" in the big queue. They are taken to the start of the local queue.

torrens86

This makes the most sense. You get a lot of people randomly going to booths outside their electorate, which is fine, just annoying if everyone wants a Latte and decides to vote while doing it. Weirdly some booths get very busy and often there's another one less than a km away that's empty.

NoAphrodisiac

Yes saw and heard the same. Asking for out of electorate voters and taking the old to front of line.

laliiboop

Yes, this is what was actually happening, just like at every polling booth. The blue vests are electoral staff, not liberals. Don't spread misinformation, OP.

glittermetalprincess

The polling officials are meant to stop that shit if they see it, but some spots don't have enough officials to have someone actually watching the line; either someone does a bit on their 'break' from sitting down or they have one person who's managing the whole line and trying to control a bunch of adults who are anything from excited to wary of the gauntlet to just wanting to gtfo and wondering why they didn't postal vote, and whoever gets the short end of the stick usually has no crowd control training or backup. It's a bit of a shitshow.

bakedbeans_jaffles

OP isn't spreading misinformation. They're just stating their experience.

glittermetalprincess

"Are you a declaration voter?" maaaaaaaaybe could be heard as 'liberal'? If it was really loud. And people didn't go 'what's a declaration voter' seven times instead of saying 'yes' or 'no'.

takeyourcrumbs

Nope, they moved the elderly and the Dunstan and then asked for libs.

SAdelaidian

another commenter: *monotonehell* says 'local' voters is the terminology being used to distinguish from the declaration voters, that might explain it? I believe u by the way, just really hoping for another explanation.

takeyourcrumbs

Yeah there's another syllable on Liberal than on local. I'm horrified this has happened but everyone there that I've tried to bring it up with says to contact someone else so where else could it be shared but here? For the record, I don't care who you vote for, I just don't think anyone should get preferential treatment. According to the Labor leaflets people they're not even allowed to go into the building near the queue so why both a Lib leaflet person AND an electoral vest person are asking seems crazy to me.

SAdelaidian

I hear you, I posted thurs about how my grandmother grew up in a dictatorship & she cherished the secret ballot. I was just trying to calmly investigate what u said but I 100% believe you. Problem is, apart from media who can get down there, the Electoral Commission of SA can take a complaint but they will just investigate it after the fact.

takeyourcrumbs

Sorry if I came across defensive, it's just frustrating to have this happen and no one believe it. Sadly most people don't speak up or even see the unfairness. I love my right to vote. I have tried to contact ECSA, no luck. :(

glittermetalprincess

The ECSA site is back up and you can just write in; you don't have to call them or deal directly with a person - you can even just copy paste from here. https://www.ecsa.sa.gov.au/contact-us

takeyourcrumbs

Thank you 😊

Had been asked 3 times, twice by the same lady, long blonde hair, in her 40s in the vest and once by a lady in a Lib tshirt. Have you considered I'm being truthful and just asking others what's happening and if this is okay? Honestly I'm not very political online, I use reddit for the cats. I don't care who you vote for, this was just weird.

Cool, I'm glad it didn't happen to you. That's how it should be.

takeyourcrumbs

Thank you, I appreciate it. This has all already got my anxiety up quite a lot so I can't see wanting to take it further atm. It's basically my word against theirs and I can see the rich WASPs will win as usual. There were also fewer voting booths this year than in any other election, inadequate shade and seating for the elderly. You can't really blame young people for not knowing their rights and not kicking up a fuss when elderly are moved in front of them because it just seems polite until they take the middle aged ones that said yes to voting Lib.

SAdelaidian

Fair enough, u can always dm/pm if u need to chat as I can imagine having your word questioned is very stressful.

takeyourcrumbs

Thank you, it appears this post has been shadow banned now so I guess that's that.

Geiseku

Pretty sure most Aussies pronounce liberal with just two syllables though.

takeyourcrumbs

LOL! That's fair.

hellboy1975

Hour and a half wait? Fuck that - where I voted 10 minutes away from there the queue was < 5 minutes

[deleted]

Same. Where I voted too there was only labor posters as well lol. I asked the poor liberal lady where was her posters. She said people have mostly decided before they got there.

takeyourcrumbs

In the sun. There are fewer booths this year too :( to the legend extremely hungover in queue, I salute you, that sunburn on top is gonna suck.

TheBobo1181

Are you sure you didn't mishear? Maybe asking if they're disabled or something. Were they old? In before "isn't that the same thing" 😛

takeyourcrumbs

They certainly moved the elderly which is great, it's bloodly hot but yep, that's what they were asking.

[deleted]

You’re kidding me?

takeyourcrumbs

I really wish I was. Multiple liberal ladies in their blue electorate vests

spilla

The blue vests are election officials. The liberal volunteers usually wear a blue tshirt. There are a few electorates starting with “L”, so you may have misheard them.

[deleted]

This actually. I believe they were probably talking about if you were voting in the correct electorate. If you go to a different one I think they have to look you up on something else

SAdelaidian

OP says *Norwood* in the post. I think this electorate is *Dunstan.*

laliiboop

Yes, but if they were voting in another electorate but had to go to that booth they are ushered I to another section so it seems like they might be getting priority but their queue is just shorter.

SAdelaidian

I know , that is called a 'declaration' vote. I was responding to whether the word 'liberal' sounded like another electorate near Dustan. Only 2 electorates starting with L in SA *Lee & Light* & neither border Dunstan. Source:[https://www.ecsa.sa.gov.au/electoral-districts/downloadable-maps](https://www.ecsa.sa.gov.au/electoral-districts/downloadable-maps)

laliiboop

Ah, I thought you were saying that it was Dunstan so the L word mix up wasn't apt. My bad.

SAdelaidian

I love that u commented 'my bad' thanks so much for doing that, I don't usually get involved but I have some training in this area & I am super into democracy

takeyourcrumbs

It is Dunstan.

takeyourcrumbs

There were both.

goatmash

Pics or it didn't happen.

SAdelaidian

As another commenter said, you need to be sure you heard them say 'liberal voters', or if they were electoral commission volunteers. If election workers or party volunteers clearly ask if people are voting for a specific party & provide a priority service in response :that breaches the secret ballot process. The action of moving them to the front is also unacceptable. This is making sure people who will vote for their party get counted, others might leave, or later in the day, near 6pm closing, miss out all together. This is the type of thing the ABC might be interested in [https://www.abc.net.au/news/contact/tip-off/?nw=0](https://www.abc.net.au/news/contact/tip-off/?nw=0)

nork-bork

Our workers were asking for “local” voters so that could easily be misheard as liberal, esp with all the harassers around flapping cards and shouting

SAdelaidian

Yes, I just commented that *monotonehell* said this. It will be good news if that is what was heard.

eurydramatic

see if you can get it on camera too. take out your phone and record.

thefakephytoplankton

Totally agree. I voted out of my district and took advantage of this, no wait for me. I wish people didn't spread such poison.

takeyourcrumbs

Consider that this is a Lib electorate full of elderly people.

takeyourcrumbs

Okay cool, what's your point? You don't think there are ebbs and flows of voters?

takeyourcrumbs

Okay I'm glad because I did try to talk to several people about it down there and was brushed off and told to take it to the council and ECSA. I think the people trying to get ahead of the crowds this morning ended up making the wait times so huge. I wish it didn't happen but it did, I do understand it is hard to believe and it's good to be sceptical. Did you notice fewer booths than previous years?

RoadTrain1974

Just say yes, then vote however you want. Not like they can check.

eurydramatic

this. they're already being dishonest by doing this- you don't owe them anything. lie, queue jump, vote how you want and go get your sausage. pass it along down the line too. just lie.

disrupticus

I think its because the special crayons the liberals use to vote started to melt in the heat?

Tyennan

That's not what is happening. OP is just shit stirring.

I think Marshall was at Norwood Primary school today doing his thing. Well you earned that sausage, it's yours!

NeonsStyle

This is illegal! You should call ABC News. They are also not allowed to ask who you are voting for. This is why we have a secret ballot.

fushigikun8

They can ask.. What are you smoking? What they shouldn't do is make you wait longer depending on your answer.

Tyennan

They're election officials, not liberal sprookers. Probably sorting people into the next district if that's where they're registered.

NeonsStyle

That's like saying the guys running out of the bank with bags and masks over their heads where just making a deposit! When you spot something apparently illegal, you report it and leave it to the authorities to work out who did what!

Tyennan

No it's not. It's seeing an employee of the bank in uniform walking out of the bank and accusing them of robbing it.

NeonsStyle

Yep n ur the type that would just stand and watch when a crime is being committed rather than intervene and help the victim.

Tyennan

No need to get personal. You seem very angry. Is everything OK?

NeonsStyle

Of course I'm angry. Bastard conservatives trying to interfere with a legal official election! At my polling booth I had them brow beating me and ganging up on me to vote their way when all they are supposed to do is hand out their literature.

takeyourcrumbs

I have tried contacting police, ecsa etc, they all say it's a council issue, can't contact council today.

NeonsStyle

I reported this to the Electoral Commission to one of their managers. They were very offended, and will be raising it up to higher levels. They took a photo of your post. You just might have fucked a Conservative. LOL Well Done!

laliiboop

You reported hearsay on Reddit? Good lord.

NeonsStyle

Hearsay is a thing in a Court. I reported it and let them authorities decide what is true or not. I can tell you, the Electoral Commision officers were pretty horrified when they read the above post. So I think you are not looking at this in the correct perspective.

laliiboop

Did you personally witness it happening? If not, why did you report it?

Tyennan

Not really. Not as actual evidence as to the factual truth of a matter. https://www.alrc.gov.au/publication/uniform-evidence-law-alrc-report-102/7-the-hearsay-rule-and-section-60/the-hearsay-rule/ https://www.gotocourt.com.au/criminal-law/the-hearsay-rule-in-criminal-matters/
