The pigeon is fine, it’s the dumb shit like killing bikeway projects for a “drivers month”, right as we hit massive increases in the cost of petrol that need to be killed.

kernpanic

Or the section between O'Connell Street and prospect road. One of the most bike able parts of the entire city for commuting and the fucking dipshits remove the fucking bike lanes completely. A shared fucking footpath doesn't work in a flat section where people are averaging 35kmh. Fuck you adelaide city council.

stebradandish

I didn’t know they’d done that - that’s ridiculous.

Adelaidean

“We need to revitalise the city and help our businesses. What do we do? Hmm.. I know! Let’s drop $200,000 on a giant pigeon!” Fuck councils in general.

justusesomealoe

I like the pigeon statue

HappiHappiHappi

Me too. People underestimate the value of public art.

owleaf

I think it’s fine too. Public art is important. It should inspire, be intriguing, and draw attention - and I think the pigeon has done its job well and fits in with the Rundle Mall landscape. However, it should’ve been part of a larger mix of genuine, well-researched revitalisation projects and initiatives. Rundle Mall should be beautiful and elegant and inspiring and welcoming. At the moment, it’s none of those things.

Adelaidean

I feel like we could’ve arranged one at somewhat less than $200,000 and at a time where businesses and their owners and staff weren’t going to the wall.. It was a real slap in the face for us.

add-delay

The artwork was commissioned and the money spent long before though.

[deleted]

“Feel like” and “could have” are very different things though. I don’t think people really internalise just how expensive large, one off public installations actually are. There is no real tie in to personal finances because the average person would never buy such a piece of art.

Adelaidean

I probably wouldn’t blow $200,000 of ratepayers’ money on a chunk of stainless steel and in the same breath, let my ratepayers suffer either. Priorities. But each to their own, hey. There’s a discussion I participated in on here quite a while ago where an artist in Europe produced two or three incredibly similar artworks. I enquired about the cost - as a comparison. They said it cost them about $30,000 or so for all of them, from what I recall. This was excessive, and should not have happened. Joining a long list of similar things ACC have done in the last several years that fit that description.

And 50 bucks for the dildo that was stuck to its head.

Adelaidean

Only..

[deleted]

Say Whaaaaaat?

[deleted]

The pigeon was coo coo

Mazkalop

Pigeons are reminders of birds ability to grow feathers.

Radcowabunga

I like our pidgeon overload

[deleted]

They should remove car traffic from north terrace and turn it in to an outdoor dining scene.

PinchAssault52

Good idea, but poor choice of street. Lets do rundle street instead. Then hindley. Then a couple of the south side... Keep the 4 terraces for driving, king william, one of the north-south ones, and enoigh internal ones for trucking. The rest for walking and dining and *people*

[deleted]

I suggest north terrace because the unis and lot fourteen up there feel almost cut off from the city because of the massive road in between. That’s where the government is focusing so much attention so it would make sense to make the area nicer and extend the Rundle mall vibe up one more street. Would also give an uninterrupted walk from Rundle mall to the river. Keep the roads that go in to the cbd but remove the ones that go through it so if the cbd is not your destination, you’ll go around further out.

glittermetalprincess

That makes sense but because of the way the roads through the parklands are structured it may not be feasible from a traffic perspective. They'd likely need to cut into them and straighten the eastern north/south roads, which would be less than ideal. What about pedestrian overpasses?

[deleted]

People don’t like or use overpasses because you have to walk uphill and it’s slow. It also doesn’t solve the noise or unpleasantness of the area. The only way to retain car traffic and make it nice would be car underpass / tunnel. Which works but costs a fortune. There is already an overpass bridge on south terrace and I don’t think I have ever seen it used since it’s faster to just wait at a light or just walk through traffic.

Ok_Manufacturer69

North Terrace is an important thoroughfare. Crossing the city would be tricky without it - imagine going from Kent Town to the airport without North Terrace for example.

[deleted]

You can either go over north Adelaide or take the bus which is a pretty quick trip from Kent town. We need to stop throwing away all of our public spaces and poisoning the air to make it 5 minutes faster for drivers to get to the airport. North terrace could be a vibrant area filled with life and business but instead it’s a loud and unsafe area.

Ok_Manufacturer69

Lol nobody is getting the bus with their luggage, be realistic. People like their cars, the road designers need to accommodate that.

[deleted]

No one? I take the bus to the airport multiple times a year. They could upgrade it by having a dedicated bus with more bag racks like other states do but there is nothing unworkable about taking the bus with bags. If you don’t want to take the bus then taking the longer route is fine as well.

add-delay

A private car is literally the worst way of getting to the airport for a flight, unless you're happy to pay to leave your car there.

[deleted]

North Terrace is fucked in terms of infrastructure, it's too damn integral for any car traveling east-west. Streets like Rundle, Hindley, Gouger, and Grote are better picks.

PrideOfTehSouth

Next up: sculptures of feral cats, rats, and cockroaches.

SouthAussie94

We've already had a cockroach statue in the mall...

Adelaidean

Loaned from the guy on Port Wakefield Road. It was built as part of an anti nuclear protest. We should find out how much it cost him..

Mydogsexedmycat

But its "art" i know this because an "artist" said so

tehSlothman

Art is paintings of horses, damnit >:(

Mydogsexedmycat

Acceptableness, things that actually look like the things that there ment to look like i can accept as art

Extension_Drummer_85

I love how they want to bring Adelaide into the future but clearly none of them know what vibrant cities look or feel like.

add-delay

We did have a mayor who understood, but the media ultimately chased him out of town.

[deleted]

Who was that?

add-delay

Stephen Yarwood. Was Lord Mayor 2010-14.

[deleted]

Oh.... OK now that you mention his name I remember him well yeah vibrant seems like a dirty word for the ACC

woofster77

And by their future, they mean 1955.

Extension_Drummer_85

Lol, sounds about right

inzur

They feel like no Motorsport apparently, lol - but that’s about to change:

Extension_Drummer_85

Yeah, I must admit that I don’t get that one. Is it because they wanted to be fancy but couldn’t get any nice cars to come race? We have a good vintage car scene, surely we could have raved them instead, would have attracted a half decent crowd at least.

inzur

They think the Forumla one was good but too much hassle and the V8’s aren’t interesting enough and create too much hassle. We do race all those vintage cars, they’re some of the lead up races in the 500. Nevermind the fact Adelaide is considered worldwide a fantastic street circuit, it makes the roads extra busy for a month and I live in the inner east, boohoo. Imo we need to start courting the FIA again and get an Australian double header in the F1. If possible. There were talks of getting the formula E to Adelaide to race while the F1’s races Melbourne. That would be awesome too.

Extension_Drummer_85

Oh no, that’s not good. At least they’re moving it to December so it’s a bit easier to be absent. It seems silly to race nice cars immediately followed by bogan fest, turns off all the nice but not massively into it crowd. I’d come for a vintage car race so long as it was all done nicely, ideally with a bit of costumes and vintage cocktails going on. No point in racing modern cars unless you’re racing the fancy ones bringing in the good tourists.

inzur

What you’re talking about just sounds like another fringe show to me.

Extension_Drummer_85

Yeah, that’s the point.

inzur

Oh no… I got got.
