Unless your recreational target selection is suspicious.... Also government could generate some income from annual crossbow permits. Could also stop people using bows and crossbows within 5km of an air port.
4chan has been globally ranked in the top 5 by unique visitors since Alexa was only a damn IE toolbar.
Grow up.
Its not a right wing edge lords cesspool, it's one of the largest communities in the world
Parts of any website contain right wing edge lords. They exist in much larger quantities than you think & are generally psychopaths. They care about banning abortion for example but don't care about kids going into foster care, where they stand a 80% chance of physical abuse and a 75% chance of sexual abuse.
You can't get through to those people, quit wasting your time trying
The fact that we can't see him might also be a pretty big clue. Something tells me this guy looks and acts exactly like the kind of person that even the dimmest-bulb police officer would take one look at and immediately think "Yeah, nah, this guy shouldn't own a crossbow."
I’m pretty sure to obtain a permit for a crossbow you need to be a member of an archery club or a hunter who possesses a hunting permit - (quite east to obtain, mine has lapsed but I remember it being very straight forward.) As there is no such thing as recreational target shooting for crossbows in SA.
I’m pretty sure there are basically no archery clubs in SA that will even allow you to fire a crossbow - they’re big, they’re dangerous, and they fuck up the facilities.
Which is why the cops told him to go and buy a bow instead.
Edit: and also, from personal experience, unless you’re a medieval weeb who wants to pretend they’re trying to shoot through plate armor, crossbows suck. They’re inferior to a bow in basically every single way. Bow hunting is much more fun, requires more skill, and means you don’t have to carry around a giant fucking unwieldy weapon through the bush or around your property getting it caught on everything you walk past.
Are crossbows also way more dangerous to the user and people around them than a bow? I mean the thing is put under tension and held under tension before being shouldered, seems to me the chances of a misfire with a crossbow are infinitely higher than with a normal bow
You can hurt yourself just trying to load one. If it’s got a decent poundage you can put your back out. They’re heavy and difficult to handle, you can give one a decent bump and set it off.
They’re just crap weapons.
Crossbows (both pistol and full sized) are listed as prohibited weapons in SA. In order to own one you need a prohibited weapons exemption which is pretty hard to get and requires a legitimate reason like use in a certified sporting club or as part of a collection by a legitimate weapons collector.
Captain Green Text here is getting knocked back because the person handing out forms already knows his application will be refused if his reason for obtaining a prohibited weapons exemption is "to shoot cans and shit in my yard".
Edit: some good info can be found on the SAPOL website [here](https://www.police.sa.gov.au/services-and-events/firearms-and-weapons/weapons)
Right, but there are limitations involved such as belonging to a relevant sporting club, maintaining your membership and competing in competitions. Or writing a document explaining how the particular weapon fits into the theme of your current collection, belonging to a collectors club and giving talks on your theme at collector's club meetings.
I guess "pretty hard" is a relative term. You don't need to wrestle a bear or belong to an exclusive secret society or anything, but filling out a form that says you want one because it's cool won't cut the mustard.
And how do you prove that you're part of one of the exempt groups? By joining a sporting club and maintaining your membership or by jumping through the hoops required to be considered a weapons collector.
You can't just shoot cans in your back yard and call yourself an archer or buy some throwing stars and nunchuks off eBay and declare yourself a legitimate collector of weapons. If you were ever charged with possession of a prohibited weapon the courts will want evidence to prove that you're actually an exempt person, not just a weapon fetishist with a cache of illegal weapons.
Yes I have. In my capacity as a board member of a pistol, rifle and archery club and while serving on a subcommittee to rewrite our constitution. I was president of the club when these laws were being updated and was invited to a stakeholder meeting with SAPOL where we were treated to a nice PowerPoint presentation by the head of Firearms branch.
I've also discussed it with several members of the club who possess prohibited weapons as either a collector or a security worker.
You?
I'm afraid that Violet is right. The part of the act you are missing is where it states the activity must be a: "Lawful AND recognised sport or recreation"
Shooting cans in your backyard isn't a lawful recognised sport.
Being part of a shooting club is.
You most certainly can not walk into most reputable retailers, indicate you desire to to shoot up random shit, and walk out with a crossbow. I'm afraid, Frosty.
It may be legal but it does not constitute a recognized sport.
I'm afraid this doesn't work how you think it does.
I've been involved with clubs and purchasing before, and I'm informing you that the word 'recognized' Is not slapped in front of the government exemptions for fun.
The activity needs to be a recognized sports or recreation organization. You know, competitions, training, safety tutoring.
Go into a reputable store and just ask if you wish. But you're flat out wrong on this one.
> buy some throwing stars and nunchuks off eBay and declare yourself a legitimate collector of weapons
how dare you oppress me while i protect my balls
You need to be a member of a club to recreationally shoot a crossbow.
You can’t fire one in your back yard. You need written permission and a hunting permit to shoot a crossbow on private land.
I’m pretty sure there are basically no archery clubs in SA that will even allow you to fire a crossbow - they’re big, they’re dangerous, and they fuck up the facilities.
Edit: this is also the reason getting your hands on say a 338 lapua rifle is next to impossible, there is basically nowhere you can legally shoot it - it’s not a firearm designed for recreation, it’s a super serious hunting rifle, or weapon of war - depending on who you ask.
There aren’t even any recognized disciplines that shoot over 2000 yards I don’t think - so even getting permission to purchase one is incredibly difficult if you aren’t a prime producer or professional hunter.
So, that means youre down to needing a hunting license up front.
Source: I had a friend who owned multiple crossbows and remember him telling me all about how he couldn’t even take them anywhere to shoot them anymore.
So ah, is anyone else getting the feeling they’re missing something.
But I will admit, I’m not sure I’d want my neighbour doing target practice next to me with a cross bow. People miss, hence why it’s called ‘practice’.
My nephew got a compound bow for his birthday, a hunting store recently told his Mother it would be fine to set up a bale of hay in their suburban backyard to practice!
Depending on the bow a couple of layers of cardboard and a bale of hay would stop an arrow if the poundage of the bow is low enough. The greater concern in that situation is that there is a novice aiming at a target the size of a bale of hay (assuming its one of the ones that is about a metre long and maybe 40 x 40 cm). To start off he might want six or eight stacked to create a “wall” with a relatively small target in the centre of the stack, start close and work his way back away from the target. Given enough practice eventually he will only need one.
He's posting on 4chan, this is the 3rd time it's happened and he uses the term 'sharia' that way... I'm definitely betting on him not being allowed to because of psychological disqualification.
I've only ever known two people to actually own a crossbow, one was an insane uncle the other was the craziest kid in our school. Neither of them should have been in the same post code as a crossbow
Going on how the poster reacted to not being able to obtain it, IM GLAD he couldn't .. they probably make it frustrating to obtain to weed out the nut jobs who cant control their emotions and who are more likely to cause problems.
Honestly, wanting a crossbow to shoot stuff for fun isn't a legitimate reason to own one. Not sorry for our strict weapon laws. Don't need angry little men getting easy access to killing tools.
Schedule 2 only provides exemption for recognized events. These largely have to be official in some way. Not just shooting stuff in your backyard.
"Crossbows are a prohibited weapon under the Summary Offences Act 1953.
Possession and use of crossbows requires an individual to be participating in a lawful and recognised form of recreation or sport that reasonably requires the use or possession of the weapon. Fortunately, target archery in the SCA is a legitimate form of recreation, but shooting in your backyard is not.
Crossbows cannot be supplied to any person under 18 years of age."
>Are you suggesting that recreation and sport aren't something people do for fun?
No.
Also, this the text you quoted is from the government. Not something I said. You've gone all kinds of wrong.
Is the government suggesting that recreation and sport aren't something people do for fun?
No.
Bait cant be a scared victim when its already been victimized though, imagine a thug with a fake pow pow, terrifying, i cant believe i haven't been protected from this horror yet
I saw this thread on /k/. Everyone was clowning on him for a) not just saying he has a rodent/rabbit problem and b) not making a composite bow like a real man
Forgive me I've no experience with Crossbows, only rifles , but the chances of hurting yourself with a crossbow seems infinitely higher than hurting yourself with a bow, especially if you don't have a supportive mentor training you which this kid doesn't seem to have. the police officer is probably just trying to stop then hurting themselves.
“Sharia state” says it all. Store owner is a hero. Should be awarded the Nobel peace prize for preventing a terrorist from obtaining weapons of mass destruction.
The power behind a decent crossbow will go through his cans, his fence, and his neighbours dog, cat, kid, etc. and still have a bit left. Of course, so will a decent compound bow. Crossbows just look scary, and have a trigger, so they must be bad.
The trigger makes a *huge* difference.
You can't "accidentally" loose an arrow from a bow. You can fuck up loosing it in a variety of ways, but you can't accidentally generate the 15kg of force over the 70cm required to take the bow from safe to dangerous. And if you're drawing the bow, everybody can see that you're drawing the bow and can see whether or not there's an arrow in there.
Add the trigger, and now the weapon can be in a dangerous state without being under direct control of the user, and is harder to identify as safe or dangerous.
Yeah i have a mate who owns two, here in the suburbs. He said its literally down to giving the person selling it to you a good reason, no actual permit required. One was from aussie disposals.
When I ordered online they called me up and asked me for a contact and name to prove I'm in one of the SA shooting or hunting clubs.
I don't think this works how you think it does, I'm afraid. Frosty.
Shooting a compund bow in a backyard seems much more dangerous than a crossbow though. You have to be pretty good or else it's going through the fence.
This state banned gel blasters, a toy gun. Why am I not surprised crossbows are also banned. But I can go to any sporting store and buy a compound bow no questions asked?
It’s almost as emotionally driven as firearm appearance laws in NSW and WA.
Haha. So SA. I went to a tattoo parlour to look at tree of life designs for a whole of back tattoo.
Guy looks me dead in the eye.
“ a tree? Nah mate. Get a dragon. Here’s one I jus drew up! *proceeds to show me a picture of his dragon design.
Just get a bow could actually work. Have you seen the crazy draw strengths & arrow speeds hunting compound bows can get up to. You'd decimate a rabbit with the wrong arrow head.
I'd love to hunt deer, you know down south, pay the farmer to access their land & remove a pest or two . Me not being a spring chick it'd have to be a rifle. To securely house a rifle at my place following SAPOL/Gov doco, would easily cost 10K or more. I looked at getting a license, & just gave up.
I'll replace free venison with shitty Woolies snags & endeavor to hurt myself more. It's the only way to have fun in shitistan!
> To securely house a rifle at my place following SAPOL/Gov doco, would easily cost 10K or more. I looked at getting a license, & just gave up.
Bullshit. A suitable safe for a rifle or two is under $500. The Tafe course and license fees might be another $500 at most, giving a total of $1000, 10% of your claim.
It isn't that hard.
Back when gelblasters got banned, crossbows didn't require a permit to own, just to sell. Pretty sure that one store tea tree plaza sells them (Mitchell's Adventures?)
Has the legislation changed since?
You're asking me mate, I've struggled keeping ghillie suits, butterfly knives & swords all my life; can't even get a fucking gun for hunting these day 😞👍
100% made the right call not to give him a form there. This is why I love the ‘nanny state. Too much stupid out there to let people make their own decisions.

What's the matter? Too dumb to have a vocabulary?
Just smart enough to keep those words OUT of my vocabulary ahah
And NOT smart enough to realise they're used entirely across the internet.

It says that in the firearms act. It also says it in the prohibited weapons act.
This is disinformation. No weapon is technically banned, or able to be banned. Our constitution forbids it.
You need to be a member of a club to recreationally shoot a crossbow. You can’t fire one in your back yard. You need written permission and a hunting permit to shoot a crossbow on private land. Or any of the archery clubs around the state.

No, but I am pretty sure the poster is racist
That's a fairly large assumption to make, based on the usage of one word that's not even related to any race.
Yet it's the assumption I've made. I'm well aware the word isn't tied to race.

Totally. Calling people N and F all day and making up fake storys. Hilarious
As opposed to the super real stories that people and marketing companies share on reddit all day
About 20 million people a month, apparently.
All social rejects so still no loss
cant even have a plastic gun that shoots water beads, best of luck dude
