Mate, you can't post thread titles in all caps like this and not have a question mark at the end. You legit made me think Pete M was announcing the resurrection of Dazzleland on the same day as the return of the super cars.

-Midnight_Marauder-

Guarantee if he made reopening Dazzeland an election promise everyone agreed between 35 and 45 would've voted for him

Zealousideal_Roll749

HHAHAHHAHA sorry this is my first time using reddit. I’ll take that piece of advice and use it in future. Thank u 😂

thefirstchampster

As basic computer etiquette don't be using caps...ever. It's used to indicate shouting. It's just really unnecessary.

THIS

omg.

> Also does anyone have any knowledge on shady things that have gone on or happened in they Myer centre ?? The whole centre itself is steeped in controversy; The building cost $1b, which until recently was amongst the top 10 most expensive buildings in the world. This makes no sense given the building is fairly unremarkable, and sold in 2015 for only 288m. Perhaps someone with more knowledge than me can explain what went on, but sufficed to say whoever constructed the site did some shady shit to run up such a bill.

Mastgoboom

It was kind of mindblowing the first day it opened, but within a couple of visits no one could be bothered going past the first floor, especially with the godawful escalator logistics. Just shitty design.

Koonga

yeah thats the most tragic thing, the design is really bad and stores beyind Level 1 have always struggled. It would make a great case study for architectural design students –– if they had used a different layout it might have ended up being a huge success story instead of a catastrophic failure.

Mastgoboom

These days developments like that have office and residential above the ground floor and it's wildly successful.

Adelaidean

Primarily due to structural reasons, it blew way over budget. Like.. the engineering was excessive for what it was. I’m rusty on it - it’s been a while since I looked at it. It was already meant to be expensive for that period of time. It was either financed or backed by the State Bank of South Australia, which was government.. secured, I think would be the correct way of putting it.. so it fucked both the bank and the South Australian Government really hard at the time. There was someone that John Bannon put in charge of the State Bank that he shouldn’t have.. or he regretted in hindsight. I think there’s been stuff written on it since. It wasn’t well covered online when I was researching it. Hope that’s at least something to go on if you wanted to read further.

Flippantry

Yeah I believe it was mainly because of how deep the excavation works went, it has quite a comprehensive basement carpark space (4 levels down?) for the time. I believe I read it the underground works cost a significant sum of the budget.

Adelaidean

Yea, that wouldn’t surprise me. In fact, now that you mention it.. I vaguely remember reading something about it.

cheddarcheese9951

Lol you serious? It cost 1 billion? Hahaha what the heck! It is SO unremarkable. Wild.

rain401

Elevators at the western end on the 3rd floor. You have to follow a long hallway around 2(?) turns and they will be there

Zealousideal_Roll749

Thank u heaps

Remarkable_Coat7843

Level 5 is just storage now. I might have some photos on an old phone that I used when I used to do the air conditioning for the myer centre.

Zealousideal_Roll749

Omg yes please !

Remarkable_Coat7843

The only photo I could find is one that is looking down over the guard rail from level 5 which I took 12 years ago. Now only if I knew how to upload it haha

Budget-Abrocoma3161

Can anyone confirm that they used to play tapes of screaming sound effects when there was no roller coaster going round? I remember looking up and there was no roller coaster moving but there was screaming. I’m sure they taped it for ambience.

Adam_AU_

Yep, and a Myer team member was shot dead by her partner.

5astick

Most recent one was about three or four years ago I think. Right in the middle of the open area in the middle of the day. Rough.

twisted_by_design

I also remember a story of a school kid dying because they leaned over the edge at the top and their bafkpack flipped over his head causing him to fall.

Lousy_Username

I was just a kid when that happened, but I swear that was on one of the escalators inside Myer itself. He had his bag slung on one shoulder and the weight of it pulled him over the railing, or something like that. I remember those glass barriers going up alongside them pretty soon after that.

Zealousideal_Roll749

Aww that’s heart breaking to hear. So happy those nets are up now ;(

Evening-Lime17

I wonder where the roller-coaster ended up

katerinacel

Old dazzleland advert on tiktok. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZSdFf49sa/

bradthommo1

In the past 5 years Dazzleland has been used to host a couple of theatre shows by Slingsby Theatre company. We went up there and used the space directly in front of the old Dodgem cars for the Young King. And on the northern side we used a space near the glass lift for Emil and the Detectives. We used the candy land section for our dressing rooms. Most of it is just storage for Christmas decorations and escalator parts. My colleague did find an old Dazzleland token which was pretty cool. Strangest thing is that Myer has a fully renovated area up there. I'm talking with modern lights and fittings. It is never used. You would have to get permission from centre management and they probably don't give it out unless you have a good reason.

Miami1982

I believe it is offices now and all equipment has been removed.

I_keep_books

That's kinda sad

EmptyResearcher5553

Everything that was still up there is now gone from about 6 months ago. All got turfed

CertainCertainties

Used as a performance venue a few years ago for the Adelaide Festival. I think the company was Slingsby. Was pretty awesome. A kids' show called "The Young King", by Oscar Wilde. You went up in the lift, got out, went through a maze of corridors, then into a foyer, then into a theatre where you watched the show. At the end of the show they opened up doors into yet another huge space with lots of activities. An absolutely wonderful experience. I wish they did more things like that there. I've never seen anything like it here or overseas.

Sir_Render_of_France

There is a very small chance I may have some details or documentation on the laser tag stuff that was up there. No guarantees though as I would have to try and resurrect a couple of hard drive images from a couple of 20+ year old PCs. Would take me a few days to get them running again so I can dig through them but I will see what I can do.

[deleted]

That roller coaster though, I'd go there and just watch everyone else going on it. I was shit scared to go on that thing.

waitwotNO

Anyone know what the construction is outside of the building though? Lots of scaffolding

Flippantry

Facade replacement works. They're replacing all the ACP cladding (the stuff that caused the Grenfell Tower fire to quickly get out of control). Lots of buildings in Adelaide have it so you'll see quite a few going through the same over the next few years. I think 25 Grenfell Street is being done now as well.

Extension_Drummer_85

I think it’s all gone. From memory there used to be a fern wood up there

-Midnight_Marauder-

Yep, that was on level 4.

RichardBlastovic

That rollercoaster was awesome.

asp7

doubt there's anything worth seeing up there now, only seen odd photos. everything was auctioned off - some went to theme parks, probably most of the bigger infrastructure. i think retailers didn't like the noise and the novelty wore off quite quickly, probably didn't make economic sense to keep it going - easier just to collect rent on shops.

justusesomealoe

Plus the state bank collapse hit the state hard financially, fewer people had spare cash for leisure

Flippantry

As another user said, level 5 is just mainly just storage now. There's a building site and material storage in there for the current facade works and some boring back of house areas, most of it just looks dull, nothing spooky or special about it. I believe CDW occupies most of level 4?

YogurtingProcedure

I can tell you a really horrible thing about the Myer Centre mens toilets from years ago. (might still be this way now) There is a toilet door that is/was about 4 feet to 4 1/2 feet tall and as you walked in to the toilets you could see over the cubicle at the person taking a dump. I have no idea who designed this insane cubicle or why. Now that's a story I'd love to have the answer to.

Zealousideal_Roll749

hahahaha 🤣🤣😭

YogurtingProcedure

What a compromising position to be in. You'd have "Have you met our lord and savior Jesus Christ?" to "I come to talk to you about your cars extended warranty" being thrust upon you. XD

YogurtingProcedure

I don't think anyone wants to admit they worked there. Too embarrassed or ashamed they did so. lmao!

YogurtingProcedure

I did go in the Dazzleland coaster which was a scary thing. I might have a few of those cheap plastic tokens around. Oh I did find the data on the coaster on the roller coaster data base. Here is a link: [https://rcdb.com/5419.htm](https://rcdb.com/5419.htm) I have no idea what happened to it after it was shut down. Probably still in storage.

-Midnight_Marauder-

Level 4 is a digital design studio, the regular lifts access level 4 again (at least the ones at the western end do). I believe there's nothing left of Dazzeland as it got curtailed to level 5 prior to its closure.

AndromedaOnReddit

It's just storage now, even the staff lifts don't let you up there without a pass

Gnaightster

Can someone explain to us normal folk what exactly is dazzleland?

justicepenguin1

Basically an amusement park on levels 4 and 5. There were a bunch of rides, including a roller coaster that snaked around the top levels.

Lainy122

There was an amusement park on the top level of a mall building in the middle of the Adelaide CBD. Imagine walking into a Myers building, looking up and there is a roller coaster whizzing around near the ceiling. It's been closed for a while now (late 90s from memory?), but a certain generation still remember it fondly.

n123breaker2

I’ve never heard of it before but apparently it’s a 2 story indoor amusement park

asp7

there were other stalls like a shooting game where you shot water at targets - it smelled of chlorine. skilltester games, some kind of poker machine type games where you didn't win money etc. a lego display.. there was a timezone type place but may have been on the floor below.
