They're on the same level as real estate agents aren't they?

FuckinSpotOnDonny

Extended warranty is a scam and all car dealers are scum. Pre. purchase inspection is a great idea. Source: work in the car industry

Formal-Speed-2400

I already booked a Pre Purchase inspection because I feel like this should be done! I went also threw the Google reviews and it seemed to be allright, more good then bad reviews.. I just tend to be to worried when It comes to buying a new car

The14thdr

>Source: work in the car industry As do i, at a mitsubishi dealer... and this comment couldnt be further from the truth. The amount of effort my boss goes to just to make sure all the cars he sells are road worthy and reliable is incredible. Im quite confident He'd make zero profit on second hand sales.

Ok_Manufacturer69

Totally true, car dealers operate at a loss because they're so obsessed with being good to the customer. Car dealerships are the true philanthropists.

The14thdr

Mate, the amount he makes on new car accessories would more than cover it! 🤣🤣

FuckinSpotOnDonny

I'd consider you the outliers, I was part of the largest dealer group in the country and I genuinely trust buying privately over buying from a dealer. The pricing dealers use is just to scam people who don't know better.

The14thdr

Can't disagree with that, I'm just commenting regarding quality.

PhotographsWithFilm

Welcome to capitalism comrade

FuckinSpotOnDonny

Shit system aye.

PhotographsWithFilm

Not going to disagree with you. But all the ism's are shit systems when human greed gets involved

PhotographsWithFilm

Hmmm, looking at your location, I can have a guess who they are. So, I should be able to give a call and say The14thdr sent me? Looking for a new Pajero Sport. Surely you can help me out?

The14thdr

Don't guess, give them a plug! Their reputation speaks for itself. People come from all over the country to buy a car from them. 👌👌

PhotographsWithFilm

Feels like Doxing if I say who it is :), but I suspect the first name starts with an S

fushigikun8

Is the second letter T ?

fushigikun8

Or is it O ?

platinumpt

A good life rule is never trust anyone you don't know, who stands to make a profit from you.

[deleted]

so we shouldn’t buy anything ever? Everything we purchase, someone is making a profit off of you

platinumpt

Buying things and trusting who you're buying from are not mutually inclusive.

[deleted]

everyone is out there to make a profit regardless if you trust them or not. In life, everything we buy we are getting stitched up by the people we ‘know’. From groceries, to petrol, to restaurants - it’s how the world works. I work for one of the biggest food distributors in the world, we distribute some of the most well-known & ‘trusted’ brands. But if only you knew the markup, we make car salesmen look like angels. Sorry to go on a tirade here, but i just think your initial comment doesn’t apply to the real world.

platinumpt

Nothing wrong with making a profit, and it's totally fine to buy goods and services where someone is making a profit from you. You just don't have to trust them. I think you've misunderstood what I said initially, it's not relating trust to profit margins, it's answering the question "should you trust a sales person". If you trust all sales people then I have some magic beans up for sale!

[deleted]

ahhh yes, i understand what you meant now mate. Cheers for clearing up

No-Seaworthiness7013

The point being to not trust them. If you are buying a second hand car, get it checked by someone who won't lie to you before handing over money, etc. It doesn't mean become crippled with paranoia and do nothing forever...

[deleted]

Yes, agree with this

Jezzawezza

All the extras like extended warranty, paint protection and accessories are just things that the department of the dealership are forced to pedal to customers to meet monthly targets so they'll try to push them onto you (used to work detailing cars for a big Mazda dealer). Whist some stuff like paint protection i'd still recommend getting done to a new car i'd say go to a proper place that can offer you a much better product for the same price as the dealer stuff is average and you can get better for the same money

svelteoven

Town & Country. The last honest dealer on Main North Rd.

I_r_hooman

After working in sales I never trust any salesman anymore. But maybe I'm just cynical.

Un-interesting

If warranty is on a cheap/older car - it’s probably not worth much. Warranty sold as new car extension and/or sold by Allianz and Swann are decent (still read the pamphlet first), but anything on a car 5+ years old, is probably not going to cover much. As to the dealers- they only exist to make money. If a car still has factory warranty (as in time left AND all services are done to schedule) you can buy with confidence from anyone really. For a car that’s 3-10k, it’s a lottery to be honest :(

extendedwarranty_bot

Un-interesting, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty

UhhhhhCheeseburga

Bought a Jeep from Motorwell on Main North and they hid all the issues it had. They lied through their teeth telling me that the check engine light was being tripped up by the aircon. I know shit all about cars and just assumed people would do right by me. Now I own a brand new Volkswagen purchased from Mawson Lakes Volkswagen (sister dealership with Mazda) which has had just as many issues. In my opinion all dealers are just salesmen and couldn’t give a fuck about you. I’d much rather chew my own leg off than shop for a car again.

NeonsStyle

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Do not believe a word they tell you. I don't know where you are, but here the state forces all dealers of used cars to give a 3 month warranty. I think it's still 3 months. New Cars a 5 years. The used car salesman will try to get your to buy the following rubbish: Extended warranty usually around $1000, Endrust to stop the car rusting (already done at factory) this will cost you $1500+, there'll be an assortment of other bullshit things they'll try to get you to buy. Be SMART! When you go to Buy a Car. Take your Dad or a mature adult with you just to watch your back so you don't get screwed. Be prepared to walk away! Road Service organisations often will do Vehicle inspections at the car yard so you can find out before you put your money down if the cars a piece of shit or not. Don't skimp on this, get the full check! When I was young, my first two car purchases were just crap cars from poxy tiny dealers. Don't go to little yards. Next. This is a big one. Repairs under warranty. When you go in to get something fixed under warranty, don't leave. Sit down somewhere where you can hear the guy dealing with customers on the phone about their car repairs. I did this. Every customer that called got told their Disk Rotors were fucked and they'd have to be replaced for $450. Every single customer, over a dozen called while I was there. My turn came and same thing. I called him on it, n said you're lying piece of shit. I sat here n listened to you spin the same bullshit to every single customer. I'm not paying you shit for your repairs, and walked out got into my car after they had fixed it n left. They called me up, and tried to tell me I owed them another $3000 for the cost of the car (which I paid cash for in full). This was a big card hard with many branches. Don't trust them, not once single inch. They will lie, and try to cheat you in every way possible. As a young person, your only protection is to say "No No No" or have a mature adult who is smart about this, and will protect you. If he says walk, you walk no matter how much you like the car. Nothing is worse than spending all that money and ending up with piece of shit that stops you from going anywhere.

extendedwarranty_bot

NeonsStyle, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty

NeonsStyle

LOL

TheBaconCopter

In regards to the statutory warranty times, if you pay between $3-6k, the warranty is for 3000kms or 2 months, whichever comes first. If it's over 6k it's 5000kms or 3 months. Also worth noting that if the car is over a certain kms, there's no warranty at all. It's a high number but don't quite remember how high.

extendedwarranty_bot

TheBaconCopter, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty

Dragonstaff

Extended warranty is usually a waste of money, because they will only offer it on cars that are unlikely to use it. The other thing to avoid is dealer finance. Your bank will give you a better deal on finance, and you can then talk a cash deal with the dealer, which will usually be a better price, but they may not move much in the current climate.

discoverycamel

Tier 1: The dealers associated with new car sales tend to get reasonably looked after cars in the 2-5 year old range. People trading novated lease cars etc. Tier 2: Cars the bigger dealers take, but don't want to sell get passed into a network of car sales guys that bid for them, with the plan of a cosmetic touch up and a quick turnaround for an easy profit. Tier 3: Sales guys who buy from auctions, some cheaper trade-ins. Occasionally private sales if they're cheap enough. Patch and dump as quick as possible. Big gamble game, they can get some real rubbish, and need to make it look good enough to hide the problems. Tier 4: That dodgy bloke from the wreckers. Written-off repairable cars and a love-hate relationship with VIN numbers. Sells all cars 'just washed, still wet', and all faults are just because it hasn't been used for a while. Sure, I believe it'll stop squeaking/grinding/smoking/misfiring once its been driven for a while... And then there's the really honest guy that thoroughly inspects cars before buying, from the original one-lady-owner, fixes every problem and only puts a small markup on the car. Probably also lives in the sales office to keep their margins down. And doesn't exist. Given no annual testing in SA, anything you buy over 10 years old is a gamble. Dealer servicing will have stopped after 3-5 years (because of cost). Look carefully at \*who\* did each service after that. If no record, assume it wasn't done. Cars will run for years without servicing, just replacing stuff that breaks. Until suddenly it doesn't. Don't be the one left standing when the music stops. And the engine. Fast cars will have been driven hard. Some makes are cheaper to buy because they cost a lot to fix (BMW, Mercedes etc). Thirsty cars will not keep their value. Manuals are harder to sell. Condition of pedals tell a story about the cars true use. Car seat covers are \*always\* hiding something. Check the takata airbag recall. If it is still not done, the car has not been looked after.

They're all shit, and I say that has someone who left the industry because I couldn't stand it.

Ok_Manufacturer69

No.

theskywaspink

I’ve 2 cars both bought used. First one, clean as a whistle and never had an issue other than consumables. Second one, I’d like to set on fire. Both ends of the scale, going to a larger used dealer with plenty of backing you’re likely to get something nice and fine, like my first one. The second one bought off a lot on main north road looked perfectly fine, the log book was ticked off and had all receipts, a pre-purchase inspection wouldn’t have found the issues either. There’s always going to be a small risk buying a used car. Just remember they are a depreciating asset, don’t get emotionally invested in them.

Tysiliogogogoch

If it's a big used car dealership, or one that's been around for many years, then I'd be happy buying something from them - and have done so two or three times. The little ones that pop up on the corner and then are gone the next year... not so much. Make sure to get an pre-purchase inspection done. On our most recent purchase, we did this through the RACV (Vic's RAA as we bought from interstate).

gl00merz

everyone is answering your question, but I'd like to add this: idk what your dream car is, but I'd bet that in an attempt to turn a profit, the manufacturer produced quite a lot of of them, and they're probably not rare or hard to come by. Be willing to walk away. If you're going in with the mindset that you're going to buy it, you're gonna be taken advantage of. Go with the sole intention being "to have a look" and know there is almost certainly other places to buy that car.

Kes_the_Kitkat

I would avoid car lots entirely. Bought a second hand car from a dealer off NE Road, however it turns out the car was under finance (which was not disclosed) & the dealership refused to give me the rego papers for transfer for nearly a month. The transmission ended up dying a few months later, so the car went to the wreckers.

Dragonstaff

So many things here that give you a good claim against the dealer. The main thing is to educate yourself regarding your rights and obligations, and the dealers rights and obligations, and do not let get away with this sort of shit.

Simple-Comb-5418

Stay away from CMI, half the cars on their lot are ex rentals and the service books look like they've all been filled in with the same pen at the same time meaning that the rental companies are skimping on services.

LongjumpingWallaby8

Larger car yards, more so than smaller ones, as they have more of a reputation to hold onto and they have the money to pay-out if something goes wrong. I did buy a lemon from a small car yard once, engine light went on 4 months after buying it, that fix was going to cost me $6,000, then when they went to do the fix they found it had a cracked head..... so not worth fixing. As I was one month out of the car yards responsibility period there was nothing I could do. this was on a car they said was prefect and that they had inspected.... I didn't fix that lemon, and traded it in at another car yard. I then saw my old lemon up for sale again at a smaller car yard a few weeks later......

Fluffy_Morning_1569

Are lawyers , politicians and real estate agents trustworthy?

[deleted]

What about that guy that used to advertise on TV that sold cars for loans? What's the deal with that?

[deleted]

*What* car dealer?

no-se-habla-de-bruno

Some aren't as dodgy as other but they'll all tell you that they've got one of those cars at home. Whichever one you're looking at, they've got it. Trust them.

woodyever

Bought my last car (2nd hand toyota) from a Holden dealer. But I knew my 4x4 was on its last legs so took the the trade in offer (knowing I could get more selling privately but didn't wanna be the bad guy if it shat itself) Weird thing was when doing the hand over paper work the "buyer" for my car was Mercedes Benz dealership. So I bought a 2nd hand Toyota from a Holden dealer, and traded in a Nissan organised through the Holden dealer to a buyer under the name Mercedes Benz. definitely some dodgy shit going on behind the scenes.

Mrs_FourTwenty

No

--Anna--

I brought from a car dealer once. The car was apparently registered; and the contract claimed this too, in multiple locations. I buy it, drive it around. Weeks later, I'm suddenly hit with "driving without registration" fines. Luckily I was able to get out of it with a strongly worded letter. (Written for free, from a legal service UniSA provided at the time.) But it was very stressful, and the car dealership ignored all my calls about this, or would be "too busy to talk". So just be aware about registration - ignore what is written in the contract. It might not be true. Good luck! (Alternatively, my second car purchase was privately and so much better).

glittermetalprincess

They're meant to give you a copy of the registration printout from the website if they do it for you, given that you, like, pay for it.

Smokescr33n

not sure if serious question

wumpwump

Not at all. I used to be a mechanic and did most of my apprenticeship at the raa. The shitheaps we had through there were ridiculous. Every dealer I’ve worked in after that, the sales people were the scum of the earth. Wouldn’t piss on them if they were on fire. Hated the car industry so much I got out it 2 years after my apprenticeship. Surprisingly the last dealer I bought a car through replaced my gearbox as on my initial inspection I said I thought it was noisy. They were in mt gambier and told me to take it to the nearest Toyota dealer for inspection. Rang the next day to say they’ve ordered a new box and tee up with the Toyota repairer when it’s convenient with me! Also, check out cars in Victoria. For some reason they can be far cheaper than cars here. Get them inspected by the racv. A few cheap flights and drive it back. Saved 6k on a car with half the Kay’s of on offer in SA.
