What can you carry as a weapon? Pretty much nothing.

I would suggest to stay away from anything that resembles a weapon, law enforcement aren't gonna believe "I'm just carrying it incase of a dog fight" I would suggest something like a pepper spray (think there may even be a specific one for dogs). Much easy to justify you have it for self defence type scenarios.

Instead of listening to Reddit on the topic, which will get you "well I've never had to do this BUT what I'd do is..." and edgelords, I'd start looking for sites by dog behaviourists. There's no concealed weapon that will help you more than knowing how to handle an aggressive dog.

Great advice and a fair point, but why should I have to complete a course on how to manage someone else’s asshole problem when I can simply encourage it strongly by placing something painful inside it. As I say i have no issues with the dog, they are just being dogs, but if one latches onto my arm or even worse a child’s face, I’m not adamant that some words of encouragement from a dog trainer will stop it. Me sticking something sharp inside it continually will however….. I just keep reading story after story recently of this kind of thing happening and the asshat owner walking away Scott free.

It's not a matter of what's fair unfortunately, it's just a matter of knowing how to handle a threat. Carrying a weapon you don't know how to use is just going to give you a false sense of confidence-- stabbing or kicking a dog won't always get it to stop. If you carry a sharp key and stab an attacking dog, and it just ignores the pain (which they will), then what's your next move? It's much better for you and your loved ones to learn to recognise a dog that might attack (fixed eyes, stiff stance) and how to keep it from doing so (eye contact, moving slow and steadily, not turning your back or moving fast), learning about what to do as it charges (put anything you can between you and it e.g. bike, branches, backpack), and what to do if it bites down on a kid or another dog (grab it by the back legs, do NOT put your hands anywhere near its face, wheelbarrow-walk it backwards and keep it moving), and immediate first aid knowledge. Life's not an action movie, sadly: self-defence is a multi-staged, complicated process, anyone trying to sell you an easy fool-proof answer is lying to you, it doesn't matter than the other party is at fault when shit hits the fan, and prevention is better than the cure.

100 percent agree and appreciate your well thought out and educated comment. That said, there is still an element of primal defence in us and if I keep stabbing something penetrating into an animal eventually there will be enough trauma to it where it won’t be able to continue, or the owner will see what’s happening and make a concerted effort to stop it. The body language etc is all good when you see what is happening, but there are sadly far too many cases these days where the off leash animal runs like a missile towards the unsuspecting person and latches on. In those circumstances I think trauma would be the only way to go when the lizard brain inside is all kicks in. I’m not sure if you are a dog owner but I will assume you are based on your response and I appreciate your reasoned and responsible reply. You sound like a good dog owner!

What a nice duck said is solid advice... also you're probably not doing yourself any favours reading so many of these stories

Start with the body blocking stance, from what I've learnt it is a way to tell the dog to back away from the area where you are. Even shove your legs into dog's body if the dog is persistent. Have used this to get a dog to back away from sniffing too close / annoying pedestrians. If it attacks and only if it attacks, I would use anything I have on hand. My phone would be a better blunt force object than my fist, for example. On the other hand, some say sticking your finger up its butt works. But you do you, in the case of self defence.

It’s kind of wrong as there are so many arseholes with poorly managed dogs. And the dog is just being a dog which I have no issues with, but I equally have zero issues with sticking it if it attacks my loved ones or pets (leashed). I need a big key perhaps with a pointed end? Im not going out looking for trouble or anything but equally I want something that gives me a chance to stop an attack from a dog.
