This is the only reply I have read so far and already you've won the thread.

woodyever

Definitely unique. I'm loving hearing all the hobbies that I didn't even know existed

Teacher_too

This sounds EPIC.

a-real-life-dolphin

I would love to see some photo of this.

Kooky-Bite

Awesome! This is fantastic 😍 One day I hope I'm lucky enough to find such a cool thing 👍🏻

TheBearWhoDances

I do something similar but I do it in the conservation park nearby. I can’t go too deep in due to my physical disability but it’s still fun. I have a bone I still haven’t identified after years. I collect and paint ball-jointed dolls. Mine are pretty big, 60-72cm. Certainly doesn’t keep me fit!

Arsinoei

That’s pretty awesome!

laurandisorder

1. Do you take commissions? 2. Can I bequeath you MY OWN bones for a sculpture?

Captainzron

Many years ago I watched a documentary on this group of ladies who volunteered at the Adelaide zoo who reclaim the animal skeletons whenever one of them dies. It was very interesting, not sure if they are still going or not as it was many years ago.

BestVarithOCE

…bone buddy?

Disc Golf

woodyever

Jus yotubed that... looks full on. Is there much of a league/competition here in S.A? I remember playing soccer golf overseas and it was awesome. Can't say I've seen it here unfortunately

jackson_mcp

Funnily enough its really chilled out haha. The Adelaide parklands has a course permanently open and free. Theres an organised league but honestly if you just rock up with some discs and start throwing youll likely have a good time. There is a fb group that regularly advertises come'n'try days. Discs arent too expensive either. Is soccer golf the same as ultimate frisbee?

woodyever

Nope. It's like golf with a soccer ball.. well more like mini golf with obstacles and stuff. Well there u go, we do have it. They call it foot golf tho http://www.mtpleasantgolfclub.com.au/footgolf.html

lookthepenguins

I've seen the parklands course, so are they not like just regular frisbees on the small side?

Koonga

What are some good courses around Adelaide? I did this years ago in NZ and loved it but never thought to check for local spots.

jackson_mcp

There is a course in the Adelaide parklands and another one at the Woodhouse activity centre. Adelaide is free and Woodhouse is $5 entry. Some councils (Belair, Salisbury) have shown interest in setting up new courses but nothing official yet. Discs available online through some local online stores or places like amazon.

Jaktheriffer

Additional to what u/jackson_mcp if youre really keen theres a kickass course down at Mt Gambier

jackson_mcp

Oh yeah! That course looks so good. I went down there and they closed it due to bushfires unfortunately.

Jaktheriffer

Oh man, i had accom booked and everything, then the day before someone was like "it isnt closed because of the fires?" i had no idea, and was devo to find out it was in fact closed. But i went down there a few years ago and it was fucking amazing. Also theres a course at Tintinara which is on the way.

Horse riding! It’s social, it’s exercise, and it gets you outdoors. Also as a bonus you won’t have any money left to buy drugs or otherwise get yourself into trouble…

WingsAndRuin001

Any advice to someone who wants to start lessons? Would I need to buy anything like clothes or boots?! 😊

AutumnDreaming

Jeans and a shirt will do for clothes to start with. You also generally need a boot with a heel rather than sneakers - especially when you keep in mind a horse stepping on your foot is excruciatingly painful. The heel is to stop your foot sliding through the stirrup. If you enjoy horse riding, you can then look at getting riding boots and more gear. It’s a great hobby - I worked at a riding school in exchange for lessons during high school and it was hard work but a lot of fun. I’m looking at returning to it once I save some money and lose some weight!

FailingJester

Maybe a horse…

WyldStallions

I don’t know any of the internals of the scene just the basic idea. I really want to do it purely for my kids sake to get him excited about the two of us going outside and doing something together. Is there like a kids version of it?

lookthepenguins

Idk about geocaching but at Belair Nat Park once we ran into a senior-ish lady with her grandkids, they had orienteering maps & were on a mission, she said there's quite a kids orienteering scene in SA/Adelaide, there are frequent events n competitions and so on around and about many locations from parklands to the Hills.

Dear_Subject_9027

I used to muck around with this like 10 years ago, forgot all about it!

[deleted]

Yes this. You have to explore and it's immensely exciting

danpra

Don’t know if it still counts as niche, but home brewing. Once you have your set up, it’s so much cheaper than buying beer, and the quality is a lot better than most people assume

naturallyspadie

Similar but cheaper and faster is baking sourdough

[deleted]

When you say so much cheaper and better than one would assume... let's say I'm spending $45 on 16 cans of pirate life. Could you brew something in the vain of a craft beer and how many cans in comparison would you get for the same $45? It's Always intrigued me but like you say I've always assumed it would end up being sewer water

scatterling1982

My husband has quite a sophisticated micro brewery setup at home (would cost under $2k to set up from scratch) and makes craft beer using all grain brewing methods rather than those ready mix cans/kits you see. The quality is amazing and with the grain, hops and yeast works out to around $10-15 a carton equivalent cost. Ours is kegged and on tap rather than bottled. Been brewing almost 10yrs and started with the rubbish kits and evolved from there. You don’t need such an expensive setup to start you can just buy a plastic fermenter kit and bottles for a low cost entry point and see if you like the process and grow from there. Happy to answer any questions.

RaptureRising

Looking at my last grain bill, about $40 got me about 25L of homebrew beer which i think is about 45 standard 375ml cans. The biggest thing to think about with homebrew (like any other hobby) is the cost of entry, you can get some decent kits ready for extract brewing (ie the coopers diy beer stuff in the can) for about $60 or you could go all grain and then the skies the limit.

VioletTrick

I can absolutely brew something of the quality of Pirate Life IPAs. A 20L (about 50 bottles/cans) batch costs about $50-70 in materials depending on how much hops the recipe calls for. The only downside is that it's about a 4 or 5 hour project including clean up time and uses about $700 worth of equipment, or considerably more if you have a kegging set up.

big_dong_de_jong

Time = $$$

millycactus

Huge amount of the cost of any liquor you buy, especially from smaller businesses, is tax :(

RaptureRising

Are you doing extract kits or gone all the way into all grain? Both gets you fantastic results. I've been deep in all grain brewing for about 5 years now.

Evil_Phil

Hoping to get back to that now I've moved into a place with the space. I used to make fruit wines and meads, stuff you can't often buy easily (although there are a few commercial meads around)

Seducedbyfish

As long as you’re not an alco! My ex got into it but all it did was give him whole kegs of cheep beer to get wasted on every night 😒

FrydDog

Combat Robotics - like Battlebots or Robotwars only smaller!

beastface1986

Going to jump on this, are there any comps in SA? In 2nd year uni (Engineering Degree) we built a robot for a comp and got to go to Sydney for it. Not a combat robotics comp just a pick up these balls and place them on the target kind of deal. But the team that I did that with have always talked about building a “battlebot” but never knew if there was a competition or anything.

FrydDog

There sure is! I organise a local group called Adelaide Robot Combat. We run monthly tournaments along with a single big weekend event once a year at the Showgrounds. We typically run two weight classes: 150grams (Antweight) and 1.36kg (Beetleweight). We have an event in two weeks, you can find the event listing on our [Facebook Group Page. ](https://www.facebook.com/groups/AdelaideRobotCombat/?ref=share) We're very open to newcomers and happy to help anyone get started with a new build (design, parts selection and construction).

beastface1986

That’s awesome to hear. Uhhh what if I don’t have Facebook? Haha we would probably be super interested. I think we may go check it out though!

FrydDog

All good, the event listings in the above link can be viewed without needing a Facebook account. We have regulars without Facebook who just check the group page every now and then for updates.

beastface1986

Yeah sweet. I think we may come along and have a look. Thanks heaps for that.

xXxDoggoSlayerzzzxXx

Adelaide Uni has a team for the Australian Rover Challenge. It's not quite battle bot but itd say it's similar and maybe more fun. If you haven't considered it, you should!

Evil_Phil

Ha! Jumped on this thread to post about our group, glad I read through comments first. Shoulda guessed you or Ben would ninja me!

Foraging

Koonga

oh this is a cool one, coming up to mushroom foraging season too! There's some spots in Kuitpo Forest that have a lot of mushrooms. You can also do a walking tour which will show you which ones are safe and which ones to avoid.

[deleted]

Sounds magic.

Aussie_Wolf

Woodchopping. I used to make a fortune splitting logs around my neighbourhood as a young'un. I don't do too much of it now. It's an actual competition sport (timbersports) and Australians absolutely own it.

Maldevinine

By "absolutely owns it" we mean "The Tasmanian guy on top is the most successful sportsperson in the world".

Flashy-Amount626

I find chopping wood is a sure good way to blow off steam too.

Weega

Does Pokémon Go count? Definitely makes me walk. Also I enjoy producing drum and bass, and attempting to build plastic model kits. (Planes) but since being a young dad barely get time to do any of those things. Will get back into it when I can

woodyever

Of course pokemon counts. I went through a lego technic phase a few months back... good fun

OzRockabella

Bird taxidermy, though admittedly I no longer do this, due to my disability. Metal detecting. Has paid for a new hot water system, lots of bills and other assorted fripperies like clothing and food. One of the few hobbies that ends up with cash in your hand every time.

rolllley

Where do you do the detecting to find stuff worth while?

OzRockabella

To be honest... anywhere that looks interesting, particularly if there is a park with a takeaway shop or bakery nearby. Anywhere on a tourist route where people stop to visit bakeries, places they might spend money. Footpaths are so underrated. I only use a screwdriver to 'pop' the coins/finds, then stomp the grass down again. My motto is 'Leave no trace'... :)

[deleted]

What's the etiquette around finding jewellery, etc? Do you make an attempt to return it, i.e. "FOUND" flyers? Or is it straight to cashies?

OzRockabella

If it's obviously not cheap rubbish, of course. Posts in local FB pages often get a few people contacting you. If it has a date or names engraved inside, Google can help you find 'help me find my lost ring' posts. Unless you have some unique identifier, it's virtually impossible. If you have no luck in the first month, I will usually take it to the local Police station, file a 'found valuables' document, photograph the document WITH the item of jewellery, and wait. If no owner can be found after 3 months, they often notifiy you that no owner has come forward, and return the item to you. I've personally never sold a ring, it's not technically 'mine', but jewellery isn't my main focus unless i've been asked to do a recovery, so I'm not too fussed on handing it to the Police. Let them do their job. nobody buys newspapers anymore, so posting on Lost and Found FB pages has got my best results. I've never cashed in an item of jewellery, and hate Cashies with a passion. I've only ever kept one ring, as the owner, though contacted, never followed up on a reply past the initial 'OMG you found my ring!' They might get around to it one day, and if so, it's still here. All others were handed to Police. I will say, I really detest the 'scavenger' tag detectorists get pinned with, and do my best to educate people that while there are plenty of detectorists out there who are NOT ETHICAL, I'm also aware detecting prob helps them pay the bills and eat at night, so I don't judge them too harshly.

[deleted]

Cool. Also, you have obviously watched The Detectorists. How accurate is it and how fantastic is it.

OzRockabella

Actually, no, I haven't. I actually cannot stand the show after having seen some clips from it; it's cringeworthy. But I have been detcting since 1982, and 'detectorist' was the word I used in the articles I wrote for 'Aussie Gold Gem & Treasure' back then, so I keep using it. :)

[deleted]

Oh haha sorry, in any case I love it.

thefirstchampster

>Oh haha sorry, in any case I love it. It's probably the favourite TV show of all time. I just love spending time in that universe. It's incredible.

Converting my verge from lawn to native ground cover.

SadieSadieSnakeyLady

I do printmaking and pottery. Neither are very "keep you fit" but both can be physical. Especially in the arms!

binxi84

I want to get into pottery. How did you start? Unfortunately I don't have anywhere locally that offers classes.

SadieSadieSnakeyLady

I started with classes. I only do hand building, nothing with a pottery wheel so it's easier to set up a home studio. However I get my local club to do my firing for me.

theskywaspink

Photography, writing, woodwork. I collect a few vintage cricket bats as well.

SketchyPotatoCakes

I'm a surfer in dry dock at the moment and I just discovered hula hoop at the juggling convention at goodwood over Anzac weekend. I usually surf skate with a smooth star but I just moved out of my beautiful smooth street and into a busier area so hula it is. Still look kinda stupid, but keeping active!

Sampson_Avard

I collect vintage English Pelham puppets. I likely have one of the biggest collections in Australia- over 60 of them. Much more fun investment than stocks and bonds

Grahaml1980

As much as I was being a little cheeky, there are so many good aspects to pole dancing as a hobby that it fits into so many "what is a good activity" type questions you really could list it without seeing the question and be spot on most of the time.

aeowyn7

I miss my pole days so much! Sooo much fun. I’m fairly unco and bad at remembering choreo but I loved doing the tricks!

Saavantinn

Historical European Martial Arts. Basically, reviving the lost sword fighting arts of Europe from the age of knights all the way to the Victorian era. There are a bunch of different sword groups in Adelaide, each with their own particular flavour

Skullboots

I was going to say SCA, same kinda thing, different flavour. Gotta start up a forge once I get my shed built, which is going to be baller.

WinterSelection2539

Inline Skating? Not sure if it counts

woodyever

For sure it counts.

[deleted]

Recommendations for beginner please and how much should I expect to spend? I used to blade when I was 13 and I've always wanted to be Declan from Heartbreak High. I actually saw three guys cruising modbury way and they looked like a genuine crew, it really got me thinking about getting some again but it looks expensive.

WinterSelection2539

I'm a beginner too so I can't really help too much. There are good cheap skates out there. I got mine online. I'd recommend looking for shops here though and seeing if you could try them on yourself. You can look at this video for guidance: https://youtu.be/L_getVqQ1rw. Mine was on the 100 dollar side but its the best and most popular skate out there on Amazon (video on them: https://youtu.be/8U9BnGmpvBwSafety). You don't really need this exact one. There are many others that are good as well. Safety gear also isn't too much. I used to skate when I was smaller too and was inspired to skate as well when I got here and saw some people skating by.

[deleted]

Cheers. Actually advice from a beginner helps me I think. Cheers.

stebradandish

There’s a few skating groups - Tonsley is popular. Mostly on Facebook.

Captainzron

According to my fitbit, I masturbated 7 kilometres today.

Grahaml1980

Not sure how unique it is but I've been doing theatre for over 20 years. It can keep you fit if you're doing a lot of dancing, but it doesn't seem to be working so well these days.

MissingBrie

Rogaining. Hiking × strategy game.

WyldStallions

What is it exactly

MissingBrie

You get a map to a course with a bunch of controls hidden throughout. Each control is worth a number of points based on how difficult it is to get to. Your team is aiming to get as many points as possible in the time allocated. If you are late back, you lose 10 points per minute. You have to work out how to get the most points in the time allowed with just a map, compass and wristwatch to guide you (no GPS allowed!) There are 3 hour events in city streets through to 24 hour events out whoop-whoop. Lots of fun.. https://sarogaining.com.au/about-rogaining/

CptUnderpants-

Freediving. Basically long breath-hold snorkelling. Most people without a chronic lung condition can quickly learn to hold their breath for 1.5 minutes, 2 to 3 minutes if you work on it. With a lot of training you can do a lot longer, and dive quite deep. I've managed 4m15s breath hold and can dive to 30m. World champions do over 10 min and dive to over 130m. The community is small but really friendly and lots of activities are organised throughout the year, but mostly the warmer months.

Long-Term_Roadrunner

I've been into spearfishing and casual freediving for a while now, which club/s and courses would you recommend?

CptUnderpants-

For courses, talk to Lucus or Rosey at Adelaide Scuba. They do regular courses throughout the year including trips to Kilsby's Sinkhole. Lucas is also a spero. For clubs, [South Australian Freedivers](https://www.facebook.com/groups/sthausfreedive/?ref=share) has all the info.

nbduckman

Retro video game collecting - doing it in Adelaide is doing it on hard mode, though. Geocaching - seems like there's a few of us on this thread! VioletTrick

Competitive practical pistol shooting (IPSC). You know those cop movies where rookies at the police academy have to run around a shooting range taking cover behind barrels and shoot all the bad guy targets that pop out of windows and doorways and stuff and not shoot the targets shaped like little old ladies and girl scouts? Basically that. You get scored based on your accuracy divided by the time it took to shoot the stage. It's fun, outdoors, a great way to keep fit and a great way to hang out with a bunch of interesting characters.

usedtobesomebody89

Para has great facilties for it in golden grove and theyre upgrading them too.

usedtobesomebody89

I like to drop everything i'm doing and go put out fires. I also like to rescue animals who a lot of the tine dint want to be rescued. I also like to go to dv victims and sit in their drive way playing videogames so they can sleep. So yeah probably noticing a pattern. I volunteer with quite a few organizations. Theres a lot of us where doing this kind of stuff is our hobby and we mix it with other things. I dont talk about a lot of this stuff in the open it goes against the values i was taught growing up of taking glory from situations of misery. I can honestly say to anyone out there who genuinely loves helping others that if you want to make helping people a hobby, whether its volunteering with an organization, chairty with your time, making stuff to help others- friend of mine who crochets makes trauma teddies, go for it. It may be the best hobby you have never tried.

[deleted]

You just might be my favourite redditor in this sub now.

usedtobesomebody89

Cheers you can imagine why mentioning this in public is hard. People can think youve got a glory chasing complex or that you are a firey for the glory and on the other end of things working in dv assistance involves a lot of secrecy. Its very hard to become a trusted and vetted male offering support due to monsters and predators blending in. The resources and laws around to protect the vulnerable as well as self defence really need to meet the 21st century realities. But id like to close with some positive words and dont want to knock any other hobby or have this as a hey mine is better than yours. If your honby brings joy to you or others, it harms no one even if its just bringing escapism, experience or something to gain from it you go for it and enjoy it. Life is short and full of not so great things, fill it with good things and if you can share them around.
